‘ROUND THE BENZ

September is bringing our sum-mer driving season to a close and we’re go-ing out with a bang. No one can say that the Pikes Peak Sec-tion doesn’t

know how to put on a good show, be it driving or dining - we are, after all, known as the Dine and Drive Club.

We certainly lived up to that moniker with our recently concluded Rocky Moun-tain Regional Event. I’d like to thank all involved with the planning and success-ful execution of this highlight event of the summer - Mountains, Movies & Mer-cedes.

Over 50 participants from 8 states en-joyed a fun-filled Labor Day weekend, stating with an elegant Welcome Re-ception at Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs. This was followed by a driving tour through Garden of the Gods, includ-ing a drive to the summit of Pikes Peak, followed by a tour of the El Pomar Car-riage Museum and dinner at the Golden Bee restaurant.

We finished up the weekend with a movie rally, steak dinner and the fea-tured drive-in movie. It was a fabulous weekend with beautiful weather. Special thanks have to go to Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs for hosting our recep-tion and to our event hosts, Dan and Cheryl Kerbs, who again graciously

opened up their home for the event and did the lion’s share of the planning. If you weren’t able to attend, you missed a great time.

If you would like to meet the rest of your Pikes Peak Section Board, we have planned a Mixer Board Meeting at the Airplane Restaurant on Friday, 5 Sep-tember. Please join us at 5:00 p.m. for a short meeting. This will give you a chance to see how we roll and see for yourself if you’d like to join us on the board. Remember, section elections are coming up in October. We’ll have ap-petizers available for the meet-and-greet that will follow the meeting. The restau-rant also offers a wide selection of bever-ages and their menu offers something for everyone.

On Sunday, 14 September, we’ve planned a tour of the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Co. If you’re inter-ested, please call Henry Russell ASAP because he has to let the mine know ahead of time how many will attend.

September ends with an old favorite event, the Chile Run, updated for this year and now called the Paved Passes & Peppers Drive. Please join us on Sun-day, 28 September for a scenic driving tour with an opportunity to complete the La Veta, Cuchara, and Raton Passes. The drive ends at Milberger Farms in Pueblo where you can stock up on locally-grown roasted green chili pep-pers. Please RSVP to Julie Nelson.

As always, drive safely, and I will see you down the road.

Friday, 5 September 20145:00 p.m.This September’s Board meeting for the

Pikes Peak Section will a bit different; we’ll meet on Friday, 5 September, at 5 p.m. at the Airplane Restaurant for a meet-and-greet with the board members. We’ll have appetiz-ers available and conduct a short meeting so we can enjoy the end of the work week and chat about everything except work.

The Airplane Restaurant offers a unique environment with all things “airplanes and jets.” Rich in aviation history, displaying hundreds of pictures, memorabilia, and

rare artifacts, the Airplane Restaurant of-fers more than good food, it offers a flight through aviation history. The centerpiece of the restaurant is a fully intact KC-97 tanker. Built in 1953, this KC-97 dining

platform actually seats 42 passen-gers. The lounge of-fers a wide selection of adult beverages and if you want to stay for dinner, their menu offers steaks, pasta, seafood, chicken, ribs, sea-

food, and salads - literally something for everyone. Check out the restaurant at: http://www.solosrestaurant.com/

The address is 1665 N. Newport Rd.(one block east of Powers on Fountain Blvd). We hope to see you there!

Mixer Board Meeting

Sunday, 28 September 20147:30 a.m.It’s that time of year again—when the

shadows lengthen, the temperatures inch down, and the leaves burnish themselves with the autumn pal-ette. Join us Sunday, September 28, to enjoy the show, both on the beaten path and off.

We’ll meet for break-fast (optional) at 7:30 a.m. at Over Easy, 5262 N. Nevada, in the University Village Shopping Center. We’ll depart at 8:30 a.m., heading south to pose for Paved Peaks and Passes photos at Raton Pass. Next, we’ll return to Trini-dad, then on to Colorado Highway 12, the Highway of Legends, to summit Cuchara

Pass and stop for lunch at Dog Bar and Grill in Cuchara.

Our route continues to LaVeta Pass, then through Walsenburg and north to Pueblo.

Our final stop is Milberger Farms, where you can buy locally-grown, roasted green chilies, as well as other fresh produce, ice cream, baked goods, deli items and specialty food prod-ucts.

Please RSVP, including if you’ll join us for breakfast, by Thursday, September 25, to Julie Nelson, 719-634-7522, or [email protected]. Bring a warm jacket, and your camera to capture the beauty on the back roads.

Section Elections - 14 October 2014Time for elections to the Pikes Peak Sec-tion Board of Directors. This year, we’ve got three positions up for reelection and one vacant position to fill.

In accordance with our Section By-Laws, mem-bers may volunteer to serve on the Board of Di-rectors and will be elected by a majority vote of the active membership in at-tendance at an October meeting. Board members serve three-year terms and attendance at monthly board meetings is expected. No officer positions are up for

election this year.

The election meeting for 2014 will be held at 6:00 p.m. at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, 5150 N Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80918.

If you would like to serve on our board of directors, please contact the Rocky Mountain Regional Direc-tor, Charlie Bennett, at 719-576-9737 or [email protected].

Halloween Rally - 18 October 2014Please join us for our monthly section breakfast at the Egg & I at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, 20 October. After breakfast, the Hal-loween Rally will begin. This will be a Q&A type of rally and I promise not to frighten you with too many difficult questions. Be prepared, however, for a spooky tour of the Pikes Peak region with likely more than one visit to a cemetery along the way.

As you navigate the rally route, two sets of eyes (or more) will be useful as you look for ghouls, or is it clues? The end of the line will be at an appropriately themed restaurant for lunch, where I hope you won’t catch anyone “goblin” their food. Prizes will be inflicted upon the top three victims, I mean victors.

If you would like to undertake this event, please contact Andrew Nelson at 719-634-

7522 or email [email protected].

Formula One by Antony IngramThe Mercedes Formula One team took second place in the Belgian Grand Prix as Nico Rosberg came in behind Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. Rosberg’s finish widened the gap with teammate Lewis Hamilton in the race for the 2014 world title.

It was an exciting race. Hamilton and Ros-berg made contact in the second lap, with both Mercedes cars coming away from the clash with some damage. Hamilton was forced into an early pit stop with a punc-

ture and the bottom of his car got severely damaged, forcing him into a spectator role for the rest of the afternoon.

The Brit had position on Rosberg, who decided to steer to the outside and tried to overtake his team-mate from a risky position. Rosberg clipped his front wing on Hamilton’s tire and somehow got part of Hamilton’s tire on the front of his car, restricting how much he could see from his visor.

November Fun Run - 15 November 2014Join us for breakfast on Saturday, 15 November at The Egg & I, 733 N. Academy Blvd, for some good food and great com-pany among your fellow Star Car owners.

We currently don’t have an organized event planned for after breakfast. If the weather cooperates, we might go for a drive and pick up some passes for the

Paved Peaks & Passes program. Or if someone has an idea for a place of inter-est to go, we’ll follow his or her lead. This is our month to be spontaneous, as our Fun Runs were originally intended to be.

Surprise yourself - come on out and see what we’re going to do.

These are all quick and easy projects you can do yourself at a huge savings. Remember Dan Kerbs and Gary Gagnon each saved over $1000 on running boards for their MLs at our last D-I-Y Tech Session. All you

pay for is the parts (at our 20% discount, of course) and a $10 fee to use the service bay.

Mercedes-Benz of Colorado Springs will provide service techs to help you over the rough spots. Think of the sense of pride you’ll feel when you fix your Benz yourself!

When it comes to electric vehicles, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz have, to some extent, got the hard part out of the way. Each has designed and produced, and started selling its own lineup of electric cars. As far as infrastructure is concerned

though, auto-makers have been keen to work together and spread costs, rather than compet-ing directly. The latest such partnership between BMW

and Daimler, Mercedes’ parent company, aims to develop the concept of wireless charging for electric vehicles.

The project has three main goals: To de-velop a system to recharge high-voltage electric vehicle batteries that is efficient, convenient and safe. For the first goal, the German partnership is aiming for an

efficiency factor of over 90 percent. The second is a natural attribute of wireless charging—no longer does a driver have to remember to plug in when they park, nor grab a potentially dirty or wet charg-ing cable handle in inclement weather. The weather itself shouldn’t be an issue either, as BMW says neither rain nor snow affects the system’s ability to work.

Safety is down to the wireless charger’s design. When a car parks over a wireless charger, an electromagnetic field generates current in a coil located on the underside of the car. Enough current is generated that BMW boasts a charging rate of up to 7kW—enough to charge the battery in an i3 electric car overnight. Normally, this sort of electromagnetic radiation could prove problematic—it’s been linked to health is-sues and those with pacemakers need not apply—but BMW says radiation is kept to a minimum by the automakers’ design. There are also sensors in place to curtail charging if a foreign object—a pet, for example—strays between the coils.

Wireless Charging by Antony Ingram

With little fanfare Mercedes-Benz re-cently announced a claimed first-of-its-kind

program designed to help firefighters and EMTs at sites of severe accidents involv-ing Mercedes-Benz vehicles. With Rescue Assist, the company is installing QR code stickers on their cars so first responders will be able to use a smart phone to bring up a

schematic of the vehicle showing where air-bags, the fuel tank, and other critical struc-

tural components are located. Their intent is to make the accident scene safer for rescue folks and passen-gers, particular in cases where the “Jaws of Life” are needed.

The QR code stickers will be ap-plied to the inside of the fuel filler cover and the B-post on the op-posite side of the fuel tank. All Mercedes-Benz vehicles produced after October 31, 2013 have had the QR code adhesive labels in-stalled at the factory. Rescue Assist retrofit kits were shipped to U.S.

Mercedes-Benz dealers last week. Owners of 1990 to present models will be offered the product for free when they come in for service while more enterprising Benz stores may reach out to eligible customers via direct marketing campaigns.

On August 16, the Pikes Peak Section traveled to Dragonman’s Military Museum in Peyton, CO for an awesome tour of this world-class facility. Mel Fisher, aka Dragonman, has compiled one of the most complete collections of military memorabilia in the state. There are exhibits from WWI to the present, covering all military opera-tions in between. Hundreds of uniforms are

displayed on full-size manne-quins. He also has an Elvis area that contains a number of items from the 60s. For many of us Vietnam-era vet-erans, it was a complete nos-talgia trip, or in the parlance of the day - a blast from the past!

North to Alaska Cruise Recap

At Dragonman’s Military Museum Owner Mel Fisher

Twelve members of the Pikes Peak Sec-tion went on an awesome adventure on our “North to Alaska” cruise aboard Celebrity Solstice. We set sail on Friday, 1 August and over the next seven days, cruised to Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway, with an early morning detour to Tracy Arm Fjord. Our last stop was Victoria, British Colum-bia, before returning to Seattle on 8 August.

We saw humpback and killer whales and sea lions, bald eagles, and the Menden-hall and Sawyer glaciers up close. We attended lumberjack shows, salmon bakes, photo safaris, took duck boat rides, visited totem poles and the Butchart Gardens. The

shopping was awe-some, the entertain-ment was first-class, and the food was superb. We all had a blast. And the ship wel-comed us with our own Mercedes-Benz logo in the bathroom!

Needless to say we can’t wait to go again. We took thousands of photographs; check them out on our Facebook Page at “MBCA Pikes Peak Sec-tion.”

‘ROUND THE BENZ

Daimler’s Smart brand has faced many challenges in the past, but overcoming common perception is probably toughest of all. So used to huge SUVs and pickups are many customers, that they refuse to believe anything as small as the Smart Fortwo can be safe.

Smart has always contested this, and its latest video is its latest attempt to highlight the safety of the all-new 2016 ForTwo. To do so, it has crashed the new city car into the biggest sedan the company makes--the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. The test is repre-sentative of the kind of crash tests usu-ally performed by safety agencies, albeit typically against a solid concrete block. Each car is positioned at an offset to the other--a tough test, as it focuses energy on a smaller point of the vehicle than a full head-to-head crash, where energy is trans-ferred around the vehicle’s entire frame.

And there’s quite a bit of energy to absorb. At 5,088 pounds, the S-Class has 2.1 times the mass of the 2,478 lb Smart. For the record, the new Smart is a good 400-500 lbs heavier than its predecessor. That should make it less of a ‘pinball’ in an ac-cident, but does mean the small frame has greater energy to dissipate in an accident. In this case, that’s 108 kilojules in the 28 mph test. The Mercedes has over 222 kJ of kinetic energy at the same speed.

It’s clear to see the effect this energy has in

the super slow-motion footage. As the two cars collide, the Smart is stopped instantly and on its short wheelbase, lifts its rear tires off the ground. The Mercedes, by comparison, continues on for much longer. Each car, though, also shows the benefits of its design. The S-Class absorbs damage dealt by the Smart in the length of its hood. The Smart, with less length to absorb such impacts, fares visually worse--though it’s clear in the footage that Smart’s ‘Tridion’ safety cell has acted in the way it was designed to. The driver’s door, for instance, remains intact, if slightly displaced. And kinks are visible in the safety cell, showing where impact has been transferred around the cabin, rather than through it.

Unfortunately, the video doesn’t go into a great deal of detail, but Daimler describes forces on the car’s occupants as being “within biomechanical limits”--in other words, risk of injury is relatively low. The test does have its limits--the closing speed is representative of cities rather than rural highways, and few accidents are quite as perfectly ‘fifty-fifty’ as a laboratory test. It won’t be enough to convince some people, in other words--but it’s evidence that even the smallest of vehicles benefits from big-car safety features these days.

Check out the YouTube video of the test at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v708z67ALww
