Stories of Faith

What gets bigger the more you share it? Faith. Thanks to Bill Butler, Beth Goshin, and

Dave Corderman for sharing their stories of faith with us this summer. We heard powerful

stories about cancer overcome… twice, a lifelong process of conversion to Christianity, and what

happens when you turn your life over to Christ and trust in him. What a terrific, and varied,

bunch of stories.

Why did we feature these people and their stories? It was not to bring attention to them,

as much as we do appreciate each of them and enjoyed hearing their stories. The point was to do

something that Episcopalians don’t do very much, and to encourage you to do the same: to

witness. We all have a story to tell, about how we came to be a follower of Christ, about a time

when we struggled with our faith, about how God blessed us or answered a particular prayer,

about how God has worked in our lives, about how God has used us to be a blessing to others.

When we share our stories, we bring glory to God, and we might even inspire someone. If you

were inspired by any of our guest preachers this summer, just think how your story might touch

someone else. This is a basic method of proclaiming the Gospel.

Our faith is based on stories—the Old Testament stories, the stories about Jesus in the

New Testament Gospels, the stories about the early Church in the Book of Acts and the Epistles,

the stories that Jesus himself told—and even today the sacred story continues. For each of us,

the journey of faith is to discover how our own story fits into the Biblical story. As we come to

maturity in the faith, we become the tellers of the story. We proclaim the Good News in the way

we live our lives and by the stories we tell.

Only by sharing our faith will it grow. Sharing our faith with others reinforces our faith

within ourselves, and it spreads faith in Jesus through our witness. In our Baptismal Covenant

we promise to “proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ”. This

proclamation doesn’t need to be fancy or from a pulpit. This proclamation doesn’t need to be

aggressive or dogmatic. This proclamation doesn’t need to be dramatic or awe inspiring. We

proclaim the Good News simply when we tell a friend about how Jesus has touched our life. In

sharing our faith in this simple way, we create opportunities for God to work on someone’s heart,

and for us to invite someone to come to worship. Not to share the faith that is in us is in effect to

deny it, and to deny to power of God. To share our faith is to honor Jesus and his gifts to us.

PARISH CARE COMMISSION Save the date! The Parish Care Commission will have an informational fair on Sunday, October

12th

during coffee hour. The commission will be available to discuss the different ministries and

their functions, to recruit committee help, and to request assistance from the ministries.

The focus of the commission is to help provide support and pastoral care to the members of Christ

Church. Commission members are: Bill Butler, Martha Clark, Deacon Margaret Haight (chair),

Missie Jarman, Penny Knepp, Meredith Lake, Donna Nuzum, Judi O'Neill, Tricia Smelter, Karen

Watts, Anne Williams, and Elaine Wyant.

Each month in the church's newsletter we will feature one of the new ministries under the Parish

Care Commission, describing its function and guidelines. This month we feature the Meal Ministry.

Anne Williams coordinates the Meal Ministry. Its purpose is to provide a meal to parishioners who

are experiencing a disruptive life event, such as hospitalization or major illness. The meal includes

a salad, main dish, and dessert. Please contact Anne if you would like to receive a meal. Also let

her know if you can help prepare meals, or part of a meal. We need willing cooks. Anne's email is

Pets are certified through a national pet therapy organization.

Please come and join us at the informational fair on Sunday, October 12. All committees are

looking for members to sign on. The fair will be held during coffee hour hosted by the Parish Care

New Tenants in All Saints Hall

As announced this summer, our new tenants have begun to use five rooms downstairs in All Saints

Hall during the week. The term “new” is not exactly accurate. The renters are Rappahannock Adult

Activities, Inc. (RAAI). They have had a group using space at Christ Church for 14 years. It is just that

now the arrangement is an official lease rather than the free use that they had in the past. This

organization, which operates under the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board (RACSB),

provides adult day care to clients with intellectual disabilities. We are delighted to help support their

mission, and so far the arrangement is working out just great for both parties.

This rental arrangement was truly an answer to prayer. Our 2014 budget had a $22,000 income

deficit, which we were counting on God to fill, as God has done so frequently in the past. Even though

the rental income in the current year will only equal about half of that amount, we have managed to keep

our expenses down so far. Also, income so far this year has outperformed projections. Pledge income

has been strong, and the Thrift Shop is having another excellent year of sales.

Looking forward to next year, we realize that the income from our last capital campaign, the

Christ Church 20/20 Campaign, is running out this year, as we use the final $39,000 to support the current

budget. Your vestry is thankful that the RAAI lease solves one problem in our 2015 budget, and they are

hard at work figuring out a way to address the larger shortfall projected for next year. What is most

remarkable is how much ministry we are able to do in Christ’s name as a small congregation with limited

resources. Thanks be to God, and to everyone here who is called to sharing in ministry.

Farewell

Sadly, we are losing two of our dearest

parishioners:

Mark and Ann Walker

Mary Rose Kovach

With great sadness we will soon say farewell to our very dear friend, parishioner, and Newsletter

Coordinator, Mary Kovach. Mary has already retired from her position with the Chronicler, has her

house up for sale, boxes packed and, when the time is right for her, will travel first to North Carolina to

spend time with family, and then, possibly to Florida, to be closer to her son and his family. Mary’s

husband, Tom, passed away in May 2013, and was given a burial with full military honors at Arlington

National Cemetery. Mary, a member of Christ Church for about 15 years, volunteered, 14 years ago, to

do the important and daunting task, of pulling all the articles together for the Chronicler. She put her

heart and soul into our newsletter and the end result was always an outstanding, professional and first-

class publication. Words cannot describe how much we will miss Mary as a friend, a member of our

church family, and as “captain at the helm” of our church newsletter.

We wish you good fortune and much happiness, Mary.

Mark has been a member of Christ Church since October 1989 and for all his many contributions,

whether it was his talent in assisting Fr. Jeff with computer issues, teaching Adult Ed classes, being a

choir member, playing “St. Nick” or serving as our resident DJ. Mark has always been there, without

hesitation, to lend a helping hand. Mark and his wife, Ann, are moving to Frederick, MD to be closer to

their daughter Annie Laurie and her husband, Rob. At this reading, Mark and Ann will have moved into

their Frederick home (but still unpacking). We wish them Godspeed and a bright and happy future.

Being near family will make it even more special. We will miss you more than you know, Mark.

EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN (ECW) UPDATE

In September, we begin another year of service. Our regular meetings are held on the third Tuesday of

each month at 11:30 a.m. in the Great Hall. Please join us as we strive to strengthen our group and make

Christ Church the benefactor of our diligent efforts. We ask that you join us in the following projects:

~ September 12-13: A 2-day bake sale to aid the Thrift Shop during the Route 208 Sale Trail.

That’s where the new Christ Church cookbooks come in. Lots of delicious baked goods recipes are

available in this new edition.

~ October 4: Support our Car Show in its efforts to raise money for our church by, again, bringing in

baked goods. We will need plenty of baked goods and workers for both events to succeed in raising

money.

~ October 23: We participate in the Harvest Festival and donate mums for a raffle with the proceeds going

to help with the holiday baskets (outreach).

NOTE: Please keep these dates in mind when planning your fall activities. There will be sign-up sheets in

ASH at the Communication Center. In addition to the sign-up sheets, Elaine and Debbie will be outside

after the 8 and 10:30 AM services with their “trusty clipboards”. Any questions, please call Debbie

Garland at 898-8732 or Elaine Wyant at 786-3267.

~ November: At our monthly meeting, one of our favorite projects is the making of Christmas ornaments

out of old Christmas cards.

~ December: This is when we display our singing talents and spread holiday cheer with the residents of

Wilburn Gardens Nursing Home by caroling and sharing the Christmas card ornaments we made at our

November meeting.

~ January and February: are usually non-project months as snow or icy weather can keep us from our

planned meetings.

~ March: We gear up and begin planning for our annual plant and bake sale that takes place in April.

~ April: It’s all hands on deck to make the plant and bake sale successful as it’s our only fund raiser.

~ May: A favorite tradition for us: our end of year trip to an area Episcopal church to learn of its place in

history.

We are few in number but dedicated and with the help and support of our church family, we look forward

to another year of service and hope those of you who haven’t yet joined us, will.

UNITED THANK OFFERING (UTO)

If you have a UTO box at home, please continue to drop a coin in it each day to thank God for your many

blessings. If you don’t, boxes are available at the Communications Center and the back of the church.

These boxes are collected at the Harvest Festival at the end of October. Give with your heart.

Food Pantry News: We extend hearty thanks to Jim and Janice Kenkel for again graciously

accepting to chair the Thanksgiving distribution. We are also fortunate to have volunteers step

forward for the Christmas distribution: Co-chairs will be Penny Knepp, Kristi Gross and Bill

Butler. We’ll also need volunteers to pack these bags with groceries.

THE THRIFT SHOP

Took in $3,282.21 for the first three weeks of August. Home furnishings are our biggest money

maker so shop new and donate your “old” to our store. For additional details or info, please

2nd

Annual Spotsylvania 24-Mile Route 208 Sale Trail.

This fun event is on Friday and Saturday, September 12 and 13. Our Thrift Shop will be

participating by renting lot spaces and also raffling items off throughout the two day event. We

need donations of items for sale. We sure could use your help in the Thrift Shop that day, as the

Sale Trail last year proved a big success for this outreach. Also, if you wish to rent a space to

sell your own items, the cost will be $15 per day, or $25 for two days. You provide your own

table.

OUTREACH COMMISSION

EPISCOPAL CHURCH MEN (ECM)

ECM will host a breakfast for all men of Christ Church and their guests, on Saturday, September 6, at

8 AM in the Great Hall, ASH. The purpose of the meeting is to review past ECM-sponsored events as

well as plan for upcoming events to be held in September and October. We look forward to receiving all

your input so we can serve everyone’s needs. Please join us. RSVP to Ron Magin,

can get a good count for the number of meals to be prepared.

Our club members welcome newcomers and hope you will give us the opportunity to have you

observe/learn a new skill or craft for the holidays. Here is our upcoming meeting schedule. Please join

us on the dates and times shown below and we can also discuss with you the possibility of becoming a

member of our club and enjoying the fruits of our labor.

September 9, 6:30 pm, Christ Church, ASH Downstairs

Ann Gorrell will guide members in making fall wreathes. Bring your supplies of grapevine wreath (or

other wreath form), materials to decorate wreath, snips, hot glue gun if you have one.

October 14th 6:30 pm at Christ Church, ASH Downstairs

Bob Lowry will present a program on Downtown Greens, a public green space 3 blocks from the train

station in Fredericksburg.

November 11, 6:30 pm at Christ Church, ASH Downstairs

Members will construct Christmas arrangements for donation to a local nursing home. Bring any small

containers, silk or other artificial flowers/greenery, accessories; also wire cutters, floral tape, floral wire

if you have them.

SUNLIGHT GARDEN CLUB


Christian Education for all ages begins again on Sunday, September 7. Classes for children, youth,

and adults run between the Sunday services from 9:15 to 10:15 AM. The adult class will begin the fall with

a course called “Episcopal 101”. This covers-the-basics class and will serve as preparation for any adult

wishing to receive the sacramental rite of Confirmation, or Reception (for anyone already confirmed in the

Roman Catholic, Orthodox, or Lutheran Churches). The text for the course is Your Faith, Your Life by

Jenifer Gamber, with Bill Lewellis. We will discuss one chapter per Sunday. Come join us for a basic

primer, or a refresher, on the faith and practice of the Church as we have received it through the Anglican

tradition.

Following “Episcopal 101” adult education will have classes on the parables of Jesus through the

season of Advent.

Blessing of the Animals ~ October 5, 2014

The annual St. Francis Day Blessing of the Animals will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, October 5. All

animals are welcome. Once again the Blue and Gray Therapy Dogs will be our special guests, and they will

receive a special blessing. Refreshments will be provided for all species. Please be sure to have your pet

under control—on a leash or in a cage—and be prepared to clean up any messes. If you do not have a pet,

bring your favorite stuffed animal.

Celtic Evensong ~ November 2, 2014

Once again, come and enjoy a lovely service of evening prayer by candlelight with delightful Celtic music at

our next Celtic Evensong in the church at 7:00 PM on Sunday, November 2. The service is characterized by

silent contemplation, prayers with a Celtic flair, and musical accompaniment by our own band of talented

musicians. There is nothing else like it. Bring a friend to this unique, and uniquely satisfying, worship

experience.

Adult Christian Education

As is our tradition, we will have an outdoor service (at 10:30) with the parish picnic following.

The Episcopal Church Men (ECM) will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, condiments, drinks

and table service. You are asked to bring a dish to share—a salad, side dish, or dessert. This

date is a little earlier than we have had in the past. We normally have the picnic on the last

Sunday in September. We moved it up to avoid two weekends in a row of cooking activities for

the ECM, since we are having the Car Show on October 4.

Canoeing/Kayaking Again This Year

Let’s take a trip down the Rappahannock! Ages 6 and up are welcome with their families. Our

plans are tentative right now; however, most likely, we will again meet at Motts Landing one

weekend day in September or October. As details come together, you will be notified by way of

the church announcements or e-mail to include more details. Kristi Gross is our point of contact

Harvest Festival ~ October 26, 2014 ~ SAVE THE DATE! Please join Lydia Pozzato on Thursday, Sep 4, at 7 PM in All Saints Hall to discuss organiza-

tional details of this event. We’re sure you will have some excellent ideas and suggestions for

this annual event. Afterward, all details will be published in the church announcements.

Quilters ~ We are in need of more hands as we will be starting on a large quilt in the near future. Anyone

interested in joining us most Thursdays, we’re in All Saints Hall, Room #8, 10:30 AM to 2:30

PM. Please bring a bag lunch.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2014


The Young Adults Group (not to be confused with the Youth Group) has compiled recipes from

parishioners, past and present, into a wonderful cookbook which is available for purchase for only

$10. This book of nearly two hundred recipes for everything from appetizers to desserts makes a

perfect gift. With Christmas on the way, think about those family members and friends that you’d like

to get something for, and what better, more affordable, gift is there? You can purchase cookbooks at

the Thrift Shop during its normal operating hours, or look for young adults selling them on Sunday

mornings. Proceeds from the sale of cookbooks will support the Young Adults’ ministries, such as the

meal they recently prepared for residents of the Thurman Brisben homeless shelter.

Vacation Bible School ~ What Went On & Oh, What Fun!

Our theme this year was Weird Animals, Where Jesus’ Love is One of a Kind. There were 35 children

and teens, and an amazing team of adult volunteers attending. We had a wonderful week learning that

God loves us even when we are left out, different, afraid, when we do wrong, and when we don’t

understand. We had a special visitor each day…Fr. Jeff talked with us about helping others and what

outreach is. Spotsy County Fire and Rescue spoke with us about what to do in an emergency. Deputy

Young came and spoke with our elementary kids about bullying, and he spoke with our teens about

internet safety. Martha Clark and Jessie came to visit on Thursday. Jill Bates came and educated us on

how the ear works and hearing loss, and then asked the kids how they did on their spelling test!

Our teens did a great job helping to create a fun environment for the kids to learn. Thank you to

Fr. Jeff for leading Bible Study and joining us for bowling on Friday! Our teachers were amazing this

year!! Thank you to Penny Knepp, Kristi Gross, Tim and Karen Watts, and McKenzie Goldberg,

without you VBS would not have been possible. And THANK YOU to everyone who donated or let

us borrow items for the week. You always do such a great job of supporting our children and youth.

Christ Church Cookbooks on Sale Now ~

“More Than Just Pretzels”

Fellowship

We want and need you to share yourself and your time hosting Fellowship on Sundays. Fellowship

hour is a very important ministry as it gives us time to socialize/unwind once a week as a church

family. You can host in honor of someone or in celebration of an event. Talk to Bill Butler about

hosting and then sign up at the Communication Center. Even once a month will help.

Christ Church Recycles

Bring in your used ink jet cartridges and place them in the box at the Communication Center at ASH.

Each cartridge has the potential to bring in $4. Sorry, no Epson ink jet or laser cartridges accepted.

This is a permanent feature, so please remember to recycle your cartridges at any time of the year. If

you have any questions, please contact Ruth, our parish secretary. Also, we have a large green

dumpster out back that you can dump all your newspapers or paperback books into. Our church gets

paid for all these paper items we turn in. This is, indeed, a bonus!

You can also recycle your old eye glasses and hearing aids by placing them in the box at the

Communication Center. Thanks to Greg Hall and Ann Woolford for being our contacts with the Lions

Club on this important work.

Sunday morning worship schedule and Children’s Chapel and Sunday school: Two services 8:00

and 10:30, (Children’s Chapel is held in the Choir Room during the 10:30 service) with Christian

Education for all ages from 9:15 to 10:15. Children’s Chapel is not held on the first Sunday of the

month.
