SEPTEMBER 2013

HEALTH AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

What is the September campaign? Our September campaign is on Bone Health awareness - “Take the next steps towards

Better Bones”.

The campaign runs for 6 weeks starting late July – September.

Each store will run a Bone Density Health Awareness Clinic during this time.

We pride ourselves on our professional service, in particular our provision of health information relating to risk minimisation and preventative health. We offer these campaigns for our customers.

We offer health clinics also to differentiate ourselves in the market. We want DDS to be known as the destination for health information and for going the extra mile for our customer’s health by offering these additional services.

Additionally under the 5th Community Pharmacy Agreement (5CPA) eligible pharmacies will receive an annual payment for providing disease state management or health promotions. By completing the compulsory campaigns your pharmacy will fulfil this criteria.

The Clinic - overview5 hours. *Please advise the customer not to wear stockings on the day

10 minute appointments (Don’t forget to factor in a 15 minutes break time for the nurse). Customers should arrive 5 minutes earlier to complete a consent form. Maximum of 29 customers for the 5 hour clinic.

To facilitate a smooth clinic, it is essential that a staff member is nominated to greet customers and provide the Patient Information Questionnaire for the customer to complete.

Conducted by a trained bone density technician.

Recommended retail $40 – LOTS stores use stock card Health Clinic Bone Density Fee (UPI:1101124).

Need a private area with access to a power point.

Advertised in: National catalogue in July & August, on DDS website, DDS Facebook site, 1800-on-hold, Trusonic in store radio and on your Torch Media in store screens.

Tip

Tip: Every time a person puts a script in –suggest they take our ‘Better Bones’ Quiz! This allows a greater number of people to consider coming to the clinic and if it isn’t right for them it may prompt them of someone they know who should attend

Collateral – shelf wobblers /

stickers / posterThe Vitamin Sale will be

on in July. Capitalise on the increased traffic in the vitamin section with these shelf wobblers.

Use the stickers to secure the customers bags and put some on the lids of Calcium and/or vitamin D products

Don’t forget to write your clinic’s date and time on the poster before displaying it in the professional area

Collateral – Clinic cards

When a person makes an appointment ensure you complete and give them a clinic card. This will act as a reminder and also gives an overview of what they

will receive at the clinic.

You have 206 bones in your body however most of us have probably never realised how much is going on in each of them. You can’t feel or see it but your bones are alive and are continually undergoing constant renewal to maintain their strength.

Small canals containing blood vessels run through your bones providing vital nutrients to bone cells.

Bones provide the framework for ligaments, tendons and muscles to anchor to, to facilitate movement. They are also the site for red & white blood cell production.

Your bones strength will naturally decline with age.

Most common disease affecting bone is osteoporosis.

So let’s learn about bones ….

OsteoporosisWHAT IS IT?

Osteoporosis is the disease that results when our bones become brittle as a result of more bone being absorbed than is created during the renewal process.

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?Unfortunately there may be no symptoms until a fracture occurs due to minimal trauma (e.g. just a bump).

WHY IS IT SERIOUS?Those who have osteoporosis have a higher risk of fractures. Fractures in the hip, ribs and spine are common and can lead to pain, loss of independence and even premature death

WHO IS AT RISK?Anyone over the age of 50 years Those with a family history of osteoporosisThose with a low body weightSmokersThose who are physically inactivePeople who have low intake of vitamin D and/or calciumThose who use certain medication e.g. long term use of steroids

OsteoporosisHOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT?

You are never too old or young to care for your bones. The main way to prevent osteoporosis is:

Ensure you are eating a diet rich in calciumEnsure you get enough vitamin DExercise daily especially weight bearing exercises such as brisk walking or skipping

IF YOU HAVE IT CAN YOU TREAT IT?Yes. Osteoporosis treatment aims to slow the rate of deterioration of bone loss. It usually involves taking a calcium supplement with or without vitamin D and depending on the level of severity of the disease some people may also need prescription medication that slows done the bone reabsorption. If a customer would like to discuss this further please refer them to the Pharmacist.

HOW DO YOU DIAGNOSE OSTEOPOROSIS?Diagnosis is done by a Doctor and involves a bone mass measurement test. The clinics we run are identifying ‘at risk’ individuals and involves an ultrasound of their heel bone to give an indication of their bone density. Anyone found to have low bone density should be referred to their GP for further investigation.

Calcium50% of Australians do not get the recommended daily intake (RDI) of calcium

Your bones store minerals such as calcium and phosphorus. When levels of calcium are low in your blood your body will draw on these reserves. That’s why it’s important to have a diet rich in calcium so these vital nutrients stay in your bones!

Foods rich in calcium include dairy products, tinned fish with bones, almonds, spinach, soy products, beans, broccoli and sweet potatoes.

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHRMC) suggests the recommended daily intake of calcium for men and women aged 19-50 years old is 1000mg/day and increasing to 1,300mg/day for women over 50 to 70 years old and for men 70 years and older.1

Vitamin D1/3 of Australians are considered deficient in Vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed to make

calcitrol, the hormone that is needed for calcium absorption.

Low levels of Vitamin D are found in eggs and fish but to obtain the levels needed the main source is UV exposure from the sun.

The adequate intake for women and men is shown below:

Typically the above amounts can be obtained by just a few minutes in the sun each day

IU stands for ‘International Unit’. Similar to mg or kg it is just another unit of measurement.

Age Recommended Daily Allowance

19-50 years old 200IU/day

51-70 years old 400IU/day

> 70 years old 600IU/day
