KUDOs to the BPA members who

brought a guest with them at our August8, 2013 meeting. The only way to spreadthe word about our Association is byintroducing other people to our profes-sional organization and we are off to a

    great start.

I would like to introduce myself to youall. My name is Debbie Gapsch and I wasrecently installed as Member-at- Large.Im very excited to work with the cur-

rent Board and members, as well as our

    community.

The last three years with BPA, I was the

Student Liaison between Brevard Com-munity College and BPA. Beth Morroneand myself co-chaired this position fortwo of these years, and during this time,we became friends as well as paralegals.Membership during this time increased, and the commitment by us brought inmany students who became members of

    BPA.

I have always been a volunteer in ourcommunity. My most memorable ex-periences were with the Guardian AdLitem Program. I really did make a dif-ference in a childs life with this organiza-

tion. During my twenty years as a stay-at-home Mom, I was involved in many

    clubs and schools.

When our son went off to college, Ithought I would return to the work

force, and guess what? I could not find

anything that really interested me. Dur-ing my search for a new career, I discov-ered that I really enjoyed doing researchand most importantly, legal research. Idecided to check out BCC and well, the

    rest is history.

I started volunteering at Brevard Legal

Aid, and worked with Silvia Cowen, andshe nicknamed me, the investigator. The support of Silvia and Brevard LegalAid, my confidence, and my professionalskills were strengthened. Before I gradu-ated from BCC, I was offered a positionwith a local attorney, and have been em-

ployed as a paralegal since May, 2013.

Im married to Al and we will celebrate

our 25th Anniversary next year. Wehave one child, his name is Logan and heis currently a senior at Stetson Univer-sity in Deland. We have three Pem-broke Welsh Corgis, one who will start

Conformation and Obedience shows inSeptember. Im an avid gardener, and

currently the Secretary of our Home-

    owners Association.

Looking forward to seeing you all at ourmonthly meetings.

The Board of Directors will be meeting onMonday, August 26, 2013 at

6:00 p.m. at Perkins Restaurant, 8200 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne,FL 32940. Please feel free to attend if your schedule permits.

Suntree Country Club: We have been able to work out a planwith Suntree Country Club to use the large room upstairs when avail-able. I think for those of you who were able to attend our meeting inAugust, you would agree that the atmosphere was so much nicer thanour normal meeting room. We will not know which room our meet-ing will be in until close to our meeting date, but there will always be asign posted at the front entrance of the Club.

We also had the Club include two no-dinner seats at each table ratherthen have one large table in the back of the room. This helps ensurethat everyone has an opportunity for networking and socializing withdifferent members each month.

Incentives for Members to Bring Guests: The August meetingwas our kick off for the membership incentive program. The programencourages members to bring guest(s) to meetings and in return theirname is placed in a raffle for a beautiful basket. For every guest youbring, you get a raffle ticket. Only those members bringing a guest areable to put a raffle ticket in the basket. We had a total of five guests

at our meeting, guests of four members. Since that time, one of theguests has become a member. In addition, our speaker brought a col-league and an intern. The attorney encouraged the intern to get in-volved in the organization and made sure he had the membership in-formation before he left.

Congratulation to JessicaPauley who won the basket.A big thank you to the lawfirm of Moser & Moser whodonated the basket contents

and Jeremie Ayala for puttingit all together.

Annual Audit: The AuditCommittee is currently reviewing all the financial records of the Chap-ter as part of our annual responsibilities to PAF. A full report will begiven at the scheduled Board Meeting on August 26th.

This September BPA proudly supports the Wounded Warrior Project.

    http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/

Wounded Warriors: Can you even imagine what our military and wounded veterans must be going

through. As reported in the Lamp, many heroes are returning with multiple amputations or other

disabling injuries not completely fixed even by fancy prosthetics, methodical rehabilitation, and job

retraining. The Pentagon counts more than 29,000 combat wounded in the Middle East since the

terrorist attacks on New York and Washington. Tens of thousands more were hurt outside of combat or

in ways that show up later. . . . insurgents have relied on disfiguring bombs and bombardment as chief

tactics. At the same time, better armor and field medicine have kept U.S. soldiers alive at the highest

rate ever, leaving 16 wounded for every fatality, according to one study based on government data. The

ratio was fewer than 3-to-1 for Korea and Vietnam. . . . Treatment, recovery and retraining often can't

be assured quickly or cheaply. . . .These troops are just starting to seek help in large numbers, more than

185,000 so far. But the cost of their benefits is already testing resources set aside by government and

threatening the future of these wounded veterans for decades to come. . . . http://www.military.com

SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLEIn keeping with the tradition of BPA, the Board of Directors is happy to announce that two scholarships arebeing announced in this newsletter. The applications and the instructions for each are found in this newslet-

ter. Scholarship applications are due no later then October 15, 2013.

Student Scholarship :This scholarship is directed to students who are currently enrolled in the Paralegal Studies Program at East-ern Florida State College, formerly known as BCC. We all recognize the fi-nancial burden of going to school and the struggle it can be for many stu-dents. It is just not the cost of tuition and books, but often transportationexpenses, child care and stretching food budgets that make it difficult to finisha degree. The Student Scholarship has been designed to help relieve some ofthat stress.

    Roseann Nelson Scholarship:

Roseann Nelson, CP was a founding member of BPA and the long time para-legal to Leonard Spielvogel, Esquire. Ms. Nelson exemplified the professional-ism required to be a successful paralegal and was a great mentor to all mem-bers of Brevard Countys legal community, in particular its paralegals. Mr.Spielvogel, wanting to honor Roseann after her untimely passing, endowed ascholarship to BPA to be maintained in Ms. Nelsons name. The RoseannNelson, CP Professional Development Scholarship was established to en-courage a chapter member to attain the CP, ACP, or CFLA designation, through the National Association of Legal Assistant (NALA) and the Parale-gal Association of Florida, Inc. (PAF).

If you are interested in certification but want to understand more please review your copy of the June/JulyNewsletter issued last month that gives a detailed overview. If you do not have a copy of the newsletter, itis posted on-line under our Chapter page on the PAF website atwww.pafinc.org.

MESSAGE FROM A RECEIPENT: On May 31, 2008, I received from the National Association of LegalAssistants my certificate of designation as a Certified Paralegal. BPA directly made this possible with the Ro-seann Nelson, CP Professional Development Scholarship. I applied for and received this scholarship whilestill attending classes for my paralegal studies. What a relief it was, especially as a student, to know that assoon as I graduated, my certification exam and study materials were already paid for - all I had to do waspass!

The application process for BPA scholarships is simple. BPA wants to help its members and encourages usto continue striving for professional recognition. Roseann Nelson exemplified the professional paralegal.Receiving this scholarship, and subsequently my CP designation, made me proud to be part of these organiza-tions and this group of individuals. I encourage current students to apply for any scholarship they are eligiblefor. There is nothing to lose and so much to gain! In fact, I am pleased to have just received my new certifi-cate, qualifying me for five more years as a CP. Thanks again to BPA and Mr. Spielvogel, as well as my cur-rent employers, Michael Kahn, Esq. and Roma Molinaro, CP, FRP, who have consistently encouraged and fos-tered my growth in this field and as a person.
