At our 58th & Biennial Convention, Executive Di-rector Patrick Jessee unveiled an exciting exten-

sion to our Fraternity messaging.

We have a mission of Building Better Men. We all know that well. But who is The Better Man? Patrick Jessee and the leadership of our Fraternity believe the answer to that question is critical to the success of our mission. You - our brothers - are The Better Man. Better Men who are guided by the principles of our ritual and our core values. You are Men of Courage, Men of Action, and Men of Excellence.

Men of CourageThe Better Man is a values-based leader, striving to meet the chal-lenges of modern civiliza-tion through innovative solutions with a purpose founded in our core val-ues of Culture, Harmony & Friendship. He is not afraid to challenge the status quo and is respect-ed for his integrity, character and poise in his values. Adversity and challenge are no barriers to his success. Though his charge at times may be unpopular, he is sustained by his conviction, enlightenment, and belief in the universal brotherhood of man. The Better Man is a Man of Courage, defined by:

• An unwavering courage to dare and to be bold in his actions, even in the face of adversity

• Principled Leadership• Embracing innovative change, advancement• A resolute conviction in his ideals, values and

purpose, undeterred by his harshest critics or toughest challenges

• Standing as a pillar of strength for his fellow man – providing strong counsel, mentoring, and advocacy

Men of ActionThe Better Man is committed to improving the hu-man condition with principle and sincerity. He does not resign himself to await the actions of others; when he sees a person in need, an injustice at hand or

an opportunity to improve the world around him, he stands up and lends a hand. When others may falter or fade, he has the poise to act. The Better Man is a Man of Action, defined by:

• Commitment to Service• Being supportive, helpful and ready to assist

those in need• Devotion to bringing others peace and goodwill• Uniting his efforts in the Fraternity with the

needs of society• Poise and self-control to act prudently, timely

and with even temper

Men of ExcellenceThe Better Man strives for excellence in all areas of his life. He is recognized for his con-stant self-development and pursuit of total perfection (individually & collectively). He is committed to a lifelong experience of improving society, seeking wisdom, culture, enlightenment

and truth, and exemplifying the ideals and core values of Delta Sigma Phi. The Better Man is a Man of Ex-cellence, defined by:

• A tireless pursuit of knowledge, truth and intellectual development

• His commitment to scholarship and outstand-ing academic success

• Living with decency and integrity in every aspect of his life

• His symmetrical development of mind, body and soul

Bilbrey, Hallett Named Career Achievement Recipientstwo of the best among better men--Dean Hallett, Southern

California ‘77, and John “J.P.” Bilbrey, Kansas State ‘76, received one of the Fraternity’s rarest awards during the 2013 Convention on the first and last day, respectively.

Hallett is Executive Vice President, Operations and Strat-egy and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for Fox Filmed Enter-tainment (FFE), where he is a key member of the executive team and is instrumental in shaping the overall strategy of the studio. He provides strategic direction and operational guidance to all FFE divisions including theatrical production, worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution, worldwide home entertainment, television distribution, digital exhibition and digital media. He aligns and optimizes resources while providing guidance to each of the studio divisions as they integrate digital product offerings into day-to-day operations. Hallett also oversees strategic planning and business develop-ment, technology research and engineering, studio and post-production operations, information technology and finance.

Brothers Hallett and Bilbrey each inspired the Delta Sigs, friends and spouses in attendance with a keynote address.

Dean Hallett took to the lectern during the Awards Luncheon. He addressed the question, “What drives career

success?” Hal-lett encouraged the audience to focus on three core ideas: culture, au-thenticity and the power of networking.

As a key member of the executive teams at both Disney and Fox, he brought an

air of humility and confidence to his keynote address. His speech, crafted and adapted specifically for the event, had a profound impact on many of those in attendance. Mem-bers stood patiently around the Grand Ballroom as Hallett took the time to speak to each individually.

During the Closing Banquet, John “J.P.” Bilbrey became the second Delta Sig in three days to take home the cov-eted award.

Earlier that day Bilbrey delivered his keynote address about the tenants of leadership he embraced since his days as an undergraduate at Kansas State. Bilbrey fascinated the audience with his stories about the lessons he learned, as well as the past and future of confectionary goods. Those in attendance enjoyed REESE’S chocolates brought by the CEO.

J.P. ascended to the top office at Hershey through a lifetime of dedication. During his career, he has worked and lived in more than 50 countries in North America, North Africa and Asia. He is now guiding the growth and expan-sion of Hershey’s global business, particularly in China, Mexico, and Brazil.

Delta Sigma Phi could not be more proud to count Hal-lett and Bilbrey among the brothers of this great Fraternity. Each has proven that a fraternity man and a Delta Sig is equipped with the tools to climb to the very top of their respective industry. What an honor it was to have two of the best among better men with us in Phoenix. We thank them for repaying the debt just as each and every one of our donors do!

Appreciated Securities as a DonationDid you know that the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation accepts appreciated stock as a tax deductible gift? This can be a “win-win” for any donor who is worried about paying capital gains. You could donate any publically traded stock to the Delta Sig Foundation, receive a tax deduction for the gift, avoid paying capital gains on the appreciated stock, and make a contribu-tion that will help Delta Sig meet its mission of Building Better Men.In addition, alumni who are 70 ½ or older are allowed to con-tribute up to $100,000 from an individual retirement account (IRA) directly to the Delta Sigma Phi Foundation without recognizing the assets transferred as income until December

31, 2013. The contribution can be counted as part of your annual minimum withdrawal but the donor is not eligible to receive a tax deduction. This method of giving is perfect for individuals who do not need money from their IRA but are required to withdraw the minimum annual amount and want to help the Delta Sig Foundation. Although you don’t receive a tax deduction, you also don’t pay taxes on the amount withdrawn! To learn how you can take advantage of this opportunity, please contact Nathan Wight, Chief Advancement Officer, at [email protected] or 317-634-1899 x463.

Fraternity Announces New RLA StructureDelta Sig Restructures RLAs to Make Them More Accessible

Following up from our announce-ment at Convention, we would

like to officially introduce you, our valued donors, and your chapters to our refreshed Regional Leadership Academy. The RLA will now be held on multiple campuses throughout the academic year.

Why the change? We felt that the previous RLA structure prevented some chapters from participating, and forced those who did participate to travel long distances. As a valued donor, we understand that many of you are more than happy to help out with travel costs, but we want you to be able to utilize your gifts in a dif-ferent fashion. With the new RLA, travel time and expenses should be greatly reduced. Also, the informa-tion being discussed at the RLA could use a refresh, so we are going to offer new programming that will better engage our members, and al-low more opportunities for chapters to work with other chapters. We will personalize the conversation to meet your chapter’s needs, while offering leadership and operations training that will strengthen our Fraternity’s leaders. Here are some details about this year’s Regional Leadership Academies:• Who is invited? Any chapter

member is invited to attend, but this program is highly recom-mended for chapter officers and chairmen. While we do not have a separate “alumni track” we feel that chapter advisors will offer unique contributions to the program. We absolutely want to see as many advisors make the trip as possible.

• how many people can at-tend? Chapters should initially plan on having 10-15 members attend. Each RLA will have a maximum capacity.

• how much will this event cost? The RLA has been paid for by each chapter’s “Educational Programming Fee”. There are no programming costs associated with attending, outside of pos-sible travel/lodging.

• When is the rLA? Below you will find the Fall 2013 RLA Schedule. Each event will include an Executive Board Roundtable on Friday evening, allowing executive officers from different chapters to meet for an open dialogue about fraternity leadership. RLA programming will begin Saturday morning and conclude around 5 p.m.
