This season saw 220 teams and more than 2300 athletes participate in the five classes. In the 42nd Annual All Star Game played August 18th, the South team scored three runs in the sixth and five times in the seventh to defeat the North team 10-6. Dustin Gor- don from Onalaska was named the games Most Valuable Player. Gor- don was 1-for-1 with a triple and one RBI, and also struck out three in one inning pitched. Cole Nelson from Wausau was named the Chair- man’s Award winner. Nelson went 2-for-2 with two RBI in the game. The All Star weekend got under- way on August 17th with the third class of inductees into the Wiscon- sin American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. The three gentlemen hon- ored have a combined 151 years of service (and still counting) to American Legion Baseball in Wis- consin. The honorees were: Don Friday – Don was a coach for Stevens Point Legion during the 1960’s, and was the Wisconsin American Legion Baseball Public Relations Officer until 1999. Don was the long time sports editor for the Stevens Point Journal, and won numerous awards for his reporting of area sports. Dick Imrie – Dick is known as Mr. Baseball in Burlington. He served in the Navy prior to begin- ning his baseball career. Dick has umpired and coached American Le- gion Baseball for over 35 years. He currently serves as Regional Direc- tor of Region 7. 2013 American Legion Baseball Season Review Robert Weyenberg – Bob, who served as Department Command- er in 1987-88, is a former coach of Appleton Legion in the early 1960’s. He served as league Presi- dent in the Fox River Valley league and Regional Director in Region 5. Bob also started the Menasha Le- gion Baseball team in 1970. Five champions were crowned this past season. Ash Port won their first title in Class AAA. Beaver Dam clinched their sixth Class AA championship. Waupun captured their third overall Class A title and first since 1976. Eau Claire won the 17-U title while Beaver Dam claimed the 16-U championship. Four teams represented the Badger State in National Regional compe- tition. In the Great Lakes National Regional played at Terre Haute, IN, Ash Port lost their first two games. Plover lost their opener to eventual Regional Champion Na- poleon, OH, then battled thru the losers bracket before being ousted in the semi-finals. Waupun finished as runner up in the Division II Central Plains Re- gional held in Pratt, KS. They were edged in the championship game 2-1 by La Crescent, MN 2-1. The highlight of the tournament oc- curred on August 10th when Wau- pun’s Nate Hopp threw a perfect game against Iola, KS. Department Commander Ken Rynes of the Bayard De Hart Post No. 13 in Richland Center throws out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the Brew- ers vs. Reds game on August 18th at Miller Park in Milwaukee. The Legion Baseball All Star game was played following the Brewers loss to Cincin- nati. The South defeated the North by a score of 10 to 6. The 88th season of American Le-gion Baseball in Wisconsin came to an end with the annual All Star Weekend at Miller Park in Milwau-kee. This season saw 220 teams and more than 2300 athletes participate in the fi ve classes.
