September 2013
BITTERSWEET TRANSITIONS
I am delighted to be writing my first letter to the members of Ohio
United Presbyterian Church. This is definitely an exciting time: for Ohio UP
Church and the Marlatt family. Since entering seminary, the prayer of
Kortney and my heart has been that God would lead us to the place He
had prepared for us. It is evident that God has heard our prayers for four years and has
truly been faithful. Kortney, Maren and I are excited to finally arrive at Ohio UP Church
and get settled into our community to join you in ministering to Hopewell Township,
Western Pennsylvania and the world.
This is an exciting time of transition for the church as well as for the Marlatts. That
being said, I have learned that transitions are bittersweet. Transitions can be a wonderful
and exciting time, accompanied by positive energy, hope and renewal. They can stir up
exhilaration of the new: new friends, new adventures, new stories, new food to share and
more. These are all things that bring sweetness to life. However, transitions are also diffi-
cult-this is where some may experience the bitterness.
Transitions require us to leave familiar places and faces behind. Old routines, which
may have given a sense of comfort and a sense of home, are altered. People may
experience a feeling of uncertainty. And above all, transitions elicit a sense of loss. In
order to most fully grow through the transition, this loss must be mourned because during
the time of uncertain transitions and loss, God causes new life to spring up.
Beginning September 8th and continuing until Advent, we will work through large
portions of the Book of Joshua. Joshua is a book of transition: from the Wilderness to the
Promised Land; from the leadership of Moses to the leadership of Joshua; from one
generation of Israelites to another. Joshua demonstrates the bittersweet characteristic of
transition and the challenges associated with transition. Challenges such as how to trust
God in the midst of transition, what leadership looks like, and how to be obedient in the
face of uncertainty. My hope is that as we work through Joshua together, we can learn
from each other how to faithfully and obediently follow God during this time of transition.
I encourage you to spend a bit of time reading through the entire book-perhaps even in
one sitting, in order to familiarize yourself with the story. Some of the middle can get a
bit….tedious, but keep at it. I am excited to see where God is calling us and I am excited
to participate in ministry with you all. Ultimately I am excited to be welcomed into your
family.
Blessings,
(Soon-to-be) Pastor Nick

Grandparents Reflect God A woman and her grandson were spending
the day together. Suddenly, the boy had
an “a-ha!” expression and asked,
“Grandma, do you know how you and God
are alike?”
The grandmother smiled to herself and
mentally polished her halo a bit. “No,” she
replied. “How?”
“You’re both old!” the boy said.
Ah, but most grandparents really are like
God in many ways-kind, loving, forgiving,
understanding, comforting, creative, wise.
Above all, they’ve guided us to walk in
God’s paths.
Thank you, God, for these special people
who have lived long enough to become like
you, in many ways.
“Lord, take me where you
want me to go;
Let me meet who you want
me to meet;
Tell me what you want me to say, and
keep me out of your way.

MISSIONS SUPPORTED BY OHIO UP CHURCH
Dear Ohio Friends,
Thank you VERY MUCH for your generous and faithful support for our ministry! God is at
work in our island countries and we love that you guys are our partners in sharing the Good
News of the Gospel.
Win-Build-Train-Send. That is our strategy as we work with university students and we’re
trusting God that lots of our islanders will become missionaries for this 21st century-to their
own lands and to many other countries of the world.
With love and thanks,
Melanie, Don and Jack Roths
Don will be traveling to Port Vila, Vanuatu to work with our fledgling stu-
dent ministry there. Working in conjunction with Korea Campus Crusade
for Christ last year, a university ministry was planted on the Emalus Cam-
pus in that city. Without the presence of full-time staff in Port Vila, we do
our best with periodic visits in to see about these beloved students.
Please pray for Don as he spends concentrated time with these disciples.
They will be doing campus outreach as well as training and Bible studies
to ground these young ones in their Christian faith. Please ask God to give
Don many “divine appointments” during these days as he ministers.
We send our love to each one of you. Please let us know how we can pray
for you!

August 2013 Denny Rydberg President
Dear Friend,
It was “princess” night at Young Life camp, and a purple tiara sparkled on the counter
in Molly’s cabin, ready for its proper placement on her freshly-combed head. it was a
fitting conclusion to a week where the young woman in the wheelchair had been
rolled around like royalty by her leader Ann.
As Molly gazed into the mirror that evening, Ann stood behind her, basking in the glow
of Molly’s smile. It had been a rigorous week, one where Ann whas literally the hands
and feet of Jesus-dressing and bathing Molly, getting her in and out of bed, feeding
her, pushing her wheelchair from place to place. Yet is was well-worth the $500 the
young college student had paid to make the trip.
Ann had met Christ at Young Life camp in high school and had been seizing opportu-
nities to risk and trust Jesus ever since. So she was ready for the risk with Molly, but she
was surprised by the rewards. “I prayed that I would be clothed in love, kindness and
compassion,” Ann said. “God used Molly to clothe me. Physically, I dressed her, but
spiritually, she dressed me. She was the slow-rolling embodiment of unconditional
love.”
Inside and out, you could say that Ann and Molly were dressed-to-the-nines as they
danced among the other kids and leaders that night. And when Ann changed the
lyrics to the song that was playing, Molly’s smile out-sparkled even her tiara. “All eyes
are on her when she rolls in,” Ann sang playfully to her friend. “No question, Molly is a
ten.”
Thank you for supporting this mission. Ann’s story is becoming increasingly common in
Young Life. Last month, for example, 35 Campaigners kids from Mississippi paid more
than $1,000 each to fly to Arizona and serve as “buddies” (the official name of Ann’s
role) to kids with disabilities for a week at camp. To a person, it was the best week of
their lives, and the kids they served were treated royally like Molly. It is a privilege to
partner with you in a mission that makes stories like these possible.
Thank you again for your support.
In Christ,
Denny Rydberg
