September has flown by so quickly,
and it’s hard to believe that we are
already almost 20% through first
semester.
We had an excellent start to the
year in spite of the usual adjust-
ments to student schedules caused
by the enrollment of new students.
We have about 1290 students en-
rolled at this time with the largest
groups in grades 9 and 11 with over
270 students each. To accommo-
date increased enrolment, we added
sections of Math, Social Studies, PE,
Science and English and welcomed
new staff members in mid-
September. I am very appreciative
of how cooperative and accommodat-
ing students were as we made the
necessary adjustments to classes.
Clayton Heights has identified two
goals for 2012-13: Improving suc-
cess, with a particular focus on our
grade 8’s, and developing social re-
sponsibility. Both goals are being
addressed in a number of ways, in-
cluding well established clubs and
programs such as Project Equal and
our almost new LINK program
which hosted an orientation for our
incoming grade 8 students at the
end of August. Feedback from the
students attending indicates that
the day was a resounding success.
The plan is to continue developing
the program over the next 2 – 3
years.
We are also working to bring tech-
nology into the school in a number
of ways. We are very excited about
three pilot projects involving iPads
in Social Studies, Spanish and
school wide through the Learning
Commons i.e. the library. In addi-
tion, our old website is now obso-
lete and now you will access Clay-
ton Heights through
surreyschools.ca. Please be patient
with us as we undergo the
‘remodeling’ phase which may take
some time.
In an attempt to stay with the
times, I will occasionally tweet – I
know you are not interested in the
minutiae of my life, so I will limit
my tweets as much as possible to
educational topics. Follow me at

I look forward to another wonder-
ful year at CHS!

Fringe is an event put on the by the Surrey Drama Teachers Association.
Top senior Theatre students from around the district are chosen by their teachers to
attend. Students participate in a number of workshops led by leading professionals
in the theatre industry as well as a wide variety of drama and theatre activities. The
focus is on skills development and building community with other top students.
The camaraderie and connections that are made last the whole year as the participants stay in touch
with each other and make a point of going to see each other in each school’s productions. All students
demonstrate an improvement of skills and interest in theatre after attending.
This year the event takes place November 7-9.

This year the Clayton Heights Arts Council, is encouraging all ar-
tistic types to join the club and participate in art related activities
throughout the year.
Last year the Arts Council did Halloween and Valentines Day window
painting, face painting, and set up an art display of students’ work in
the hub. They did some fundraising and ended their year with a pizza
party. They worked on designs for the agenda cover and the grad key
chain.
This year we will elect a strong council of motivated young artists, to
plan fun and art related activities and events. We are also hoping to
create a mini mural to hang in the halls.
This is a great club to express your artistic side. You do not have to be enrolled in art classes to join,
you just need to have a creative flair and like to hang out with like minded people. Information re-
garding our upcoming meetings will be on the announcements.

CAREER EDUCATION, GT, PLANNING 10 AND HACE
Department Head: Mr. B. Dayton
Facilitator: Mr. N. Fisher
HACE Coordinator 8/9: Ms. A. Lahnert
Grad Transitions Coordinator: Mr. B. Dayton/Mr. N. Fisher
Planning 10 Teacher: Ms. K. Shantz
Planning 10 Teacher: Ms. K. Lindroos
Career Education Assistant: Ms. V. Newman
Career Education is very excited to be embarking on their fifth year of a career development strate-
gy for all of our Clayton Heights students to guide them toward their chosen post-secondary dream.
Your Career Education Assistant has collaborated with the Counselling Department, Graduation
Transitions Coordinator, Planning 10 teachers, and Health and Career Education Coordinator to
develop a specific practice to guide students from grade 8 to grade 12. The format is being delivered
to students in grade level assemblies and workshops throughout the year.
The basic system involves having students choose a career of interest using the Career Cruising Pro-
gram - Level One, which allows them to discover their career interests.
In Planning 10, students complete an extensive Career Investigation As-
signment with the Career Cruising Program covering Levels 2 & 3. After
completing a series of assignments, students create a career presentation
which is viewed by their peers, providing students exposure to a variety of
career options. As well, Planning 10 students learn how to prepare a proper
cover letter and resume which they can use to apply for jobs in the commu-
nity. The students then participate in a mock job interview to assist them to
further develop their interview skills.
Grade 11 & 12 workshops and individual consultations help guide students so they will understand
costs, methods of funding their choices and some of the most basic skills.
This exciting program ensures that every Clayton Heights student is given the opportunity to leave
Clayton Heights with a “Tool Kit” in hand to enter into their post-secondary choice whether they
choose the trades, college, university or a great job straight out of school!

18th Annual Take Our Kids to Work
Wednesday, November 7, 2012
The Learning Partnership is a national charitable organization dedicated to championing a strong
public education system in Canada through innovative programs, credible research, policy initia-
tives, leadership training and public engagement. Since 1993, more than 4.9 million students and
teachers have participated in programs run by The Learning Partnership.
Take Our Kids to Work™ is The Learning Partnership’s signature program involving more than
250,000 Grade 9 students annually. This year, on Wednesday, November 7, Grade 9, Senior 1
(Manitoba) and Secondary III (Quebec) students across Canada will spend a day in the workplace of
a parent, relative, or friend.
For students, it’s more than a fun day. It’s an opportunity to:
• Understand the importance of staying in school by learning first-hand what skills are
required in today’s workplace.
• Develop an appreciation for their parents’ careers and roles in supporting their families.
• Start exploring career options in a practical way and gain a better understanding of just
how many career choices are open to them.
For parents, it’s helping prepare your child for the future. You can:
• Participate in a shared experience with your child.
• Begin a career dialogue based on actual experiences.
• Enrich your child’s experience with discussions before, during and after the workplace visit.
It is important to note that:
It is up to the students/parents/employers to arrange the job shadow placement, and stu-
dents must have their parent/guardian permission to participate.
This is a job-shadow hands-off activity – NOT work experience. (no WCB coverage)
The parents/guardians of the students who participate are responsible for the safety of
their child while they are at the workplace.
The students will be able to gain the information they may need to analyze and plan for their career
interests. Details will be outlined in a letter from Mr. Fisher to parents to be sent home with stu-
dents in October. For further information, please visit the website: www.takeourkidstowork.ca
Grade 10
During the month of October, all of our Planning 10 students will be exploring options to consider
after high school. By highlighting the students’ career options in high school, students have the
foundation from which to base their course selection for their senior years. Students who consider
their post-secondary options are then more likely to pursue some form of post-secondary education.
In addition, during Planning 10, Mr. Fisher has already presented a workshop specifically focusing
on the area of Trades and Technology.
“Home of the Night Riders”
At the end of this semester, Mr. Dayton will also be going into the Planning class to assist them in
making course selections for their grade 11/12 school years.
Bridging the Gap Between Grade 11 and 12
Grade 11/12 students may want to have additional assistance in re-defining their career goals and/or
selecting a post-secondary choice to meet their needs. They are always welcome to come in for an
individual career assessment. You can make an appointment with Ms. V. Newman, the Career Edu-
cation Assistant, in Room #105. Together you can create a new realm of pos-
sibilities for your future!
Students can:
discover their evolving work skills
explore apprenticeship training options
do detailed post-secondary research exercises
Hopefully this will result in focusing on a new career goal that the student is passionate about! Stu-
dents can make an appointment Monday through Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Grade 12
We have keen students pursuing scholarships again this year. Much of the scholarship funds go un-
claimed each year because students simply do not apply, so we encourage ALL grade 12 students to
visit the Career Centre regularly to check out the latest scholarship opportunities available.
In addition to the mainstream scholarships that we advertise, students can research more infor-
mation at the following web sites:
www.studentawards.com
www.scholarshipscanada.com
www.fastweb.com
www.schoolfinder.com
Often companies provide scholarships for their employees’ families, which are not usually advertised
to the general public, so we do not have this information here. It is a good idea to ask your parents if
their workplace offers scholarships to families’ undergraduates.
If students need to review scholarship criteria, or need to be nominated by an administrator, or need
their application edited and approved, they must first make an appointment with Mr. Dayton. Be
sure to allow 2 weeks before deadline: one week for references to be made, and 7 work-
ing days to mail your scholarship application by the deadline posted.
The Process:
careers
PAGE 13 CLAYTON HEIGHTS SECO NDARY NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2012
“Home of the Night Riders”
After students have chosen their career and decided which post-secondary institution they plan to
attend, they can then consider the appropriate scholarships that apply to that career path.
B.C. post-secondary entrance scholarships, national scholarships and community scholarships are
advertised in 4 ways:
1. in the Scholarships reference binders in the Career Centre, Room #105
2. our in-house CH-TV
3. in this monthly newsletter, which is available online on our school website
4. posted on the wall outside the Career Centre (monthly)
As the information becomes available to us, it is updated weekly.
Please keep in mind that some of the universities will often not have their information on scholar-
ships ready until November of each year.
SD#36 District Partnership Programs Available for Students
These are partnerships between the K-12 system, the post-secondary education system and employ-
ers, designed to improve and strengthen BC’s public education system. This then eliminates barriers
of student transition from post-secondary education to the workplace.
This initiative allows secondary students to simultaneously earn their secondary school diplomas
and first year post-secondary or industry certification. Application deadline is April 2013. Please
contact Mr. Fisher with any questions.
Here is the list of District Programs available for Grade 10 and 11 students to apply for:
Secondary School Apprenticeship = SSA
For students interested in more information on the Trades and SSA – please make an appointment
to see Mr. Fisher. The SSA is a high school program that provides students over the age of 15 who
are enrolled in a secondary school in Surrey, with the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship while

Link Crew and Grade 8 orientation…a huge success!
During the last week of August, 45 senior students volunteered their time to be in school acquiring
leadership skills that would enable them to facilitate a successful orientation to 197 incoming grade
8 students.
In addition to large group activities, our leaders paired up and broke off into small groups where
they were in charge of 10 students who they led through a variety of activities.
Unlike other transition programs, Link Crew focuses on three things: Safety (feeling secure in a new
larger school setting); information sharing (get involved!) and most important is relationship build-
ing (establishing connections with peers and leaders).
Link Crew is built on the belief that students help students succeed. But the commitment by
our Leaders doesn’t end there. They are prepared to support their groups of students throughout the
first school year. Futures activities include offering support at the grade 8 BBQ, hosting the pump-
kin carving contest, hosting “Cocoa and Cram” study skills sessions and more…
