Well, August was a good month for us. We had a Chapter Fund Raiser cooking chickens and it turned out

very well. Then we had our Fun Day on the 25th of August at Natchez Trace State Park at the Recreation Lodge

at Cub Lake. We had over 100 Wingers to show up. From all the comments that I have heard, everyone had a

Great Time. Some said they would like to see it there again next year.

I was almost late for the event (Fun Day) myself. My brother Jeff said he would call me when he got up

himself and was headed to Natchez Trace but he forgot to call. My alarm didn’t go off and I woke up at 7:30

and I should have been there at 7:30 getting things set up. Well, it’s about an hour and half drive pulling that

trailer, which really put me behind. But, when I did get there, Chapter Members were standing there ready and

willing to help with the set up. It didn’t take us any time to get it all set up for those expected Wingers to ar-

rive. I can’t THANK THEM ENOUGH; they are the BEST MEMBERS a Chapter could want!!!

We even had a couple of Wingers from Florida to show up at Fun Day. What a coincident, they were Stuart

& Cheryl Willis from FL2-N, 850 miles. They were just passing through and found out we were having our Fun Day and came to it. They ended up winning one of the 50/50 drawings, which made it good for them, $80 plus

dollars would buy a lot of fuel for their bike. We were glad they came and they really enjoyed themselves. Had

another couple that is in our Chapter that had forgotten about Fun Day and they decided to take a ride on

Saturday. David & Mary Scates rode to Natchez Trace and saw the signs we had put out and came on to Fun

Day.

We had three new members to show up, Fred & Kitty Westenberger, Garey Woodard and Tom Duncan that I

had sent letters to about Fun Day. We have never met them before. They were assigned to Chapter TN-N but

have never come to a meeting. So I invited them and they showed up. As a matter of fact, they were at our Sep-

tember meeting at the Old Country Store.

We were honored to have some of the District Staff to come. Richard & Becky Griffin, DD, Alan & Glenda

Keough, ACD, Jim Lester, Webmaster, and Reginald and Kim Seymour, DMEC. I would like to THANK all the

Chapters that supported us this year, Chapter K, Chapter Y, Chapter Z, Chapter H, Chapter Q, Chapter W2,

Chapter L and Chapter A. We were honored that all of you came and we hope to put on a better Fun Day next

year. After Fun Day, we all went to Chapter K’s meeting at Dickson, TN.

We now have a New MEC, Sandy (Biker Chick) Hayes and she is sporting a new Trike. She thinks she is on

top of the world now. Not much riding since she has to learn how to ride it, but she gets to look at it a lot. We

also have a New Chapter Educator, Shannon & Karen Seaton. They decided to step up and show their support.

Shannon does some education for Medical Center EMS already, which is where I work. So I get to see him all

the time. He and his family, Karen (wife) and children Jacob and Hayley have become new

members of Chapter TN-N.

Look for the pictures and names of the winners of the Bike Show, 50/50 drawing, Horse

Shoe Contest, Corn Toss Contest. They will be posted throughout the newsletter. Next month

we are hosting a TRC class, Oct 20th. Meet at the Old Country Store at 8:00am for class and

then we will go to the riding course lot. For information on this, you can contact me at 731-676

-9917. So

Until then,

Ride Safe, Ride Often, Have Fun

3

Hello everybody, I hope this finds all of you well. I was glad to see all of you at the last meeting, had a great

time, looking forward to next month. I have been teaching Debbie how to ride the trike, she is doing very well. I got

on behind her last week and let her drive. I would talk to her through the intercom and explain to her what to do

as we drove along. We drove about fifty miles, and did not have any trouble. She has a little trouble shifting; she

wants to go up a gear instead of going down a gear. Now I need to get her to study the motorcycle manual and go

take her test.

I am sure most of you have seen the movie about the kids going to prison and getting Scared Straight, well I

have been teaching Sandy to drive as well. She has been driving in the yard up and down the driveway and does

pretty well. She finally figured out that it is easier to take off in first gear rather than in second. She would take off and it looked like she was riding a bull. She rode in the yard for about a week and decided she was ready for the

highway. Now I am Scared Straight. Well we put on the helmets, hooked up the intercoms and prepared to leave. I

put Debbie on my Trike, showed her how to talk on the CB and let her follow us. You talk about double trouble.

We started out and all was going fine, Sandy was following my directions pretty well. We came to a stop sign,

turned left and were off again, looked in the review mirror, no Debbie. We turned around and went back to find

her and she was sitting still at the stop sign. She said “It will not go. There is an orange light on the dash that says

OD.” I told her that you cannot take off in Overdrive. She got it going again, and from there we were smooth sail-

ing. We drove about fifty miles through the back roads and man the weather was nice. On the way back home, I

made them drive through the city of Parsons and go through the only red light we have. Both did an excellent job.

I think they have got it under control.

With all of this said, let me leave you with what I call a really good friend,

Ride A Lot, Be Safe, Have Fun

Our Motto...

"Safety is for Life"

Our Mission...

" To Save Lives Through Quality, World Class Education"

Here are a few notes about the purpose of the GWRRA Rider Education Program:

The GWRRA Rider Education Program (REP) is intended to make the motorcycle environment safer by reducing

injuries and fatalities and increasing motorcyclist skills and awareness. The REP does not propose to have all the

answers. However, our close-working relationship with the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF), as well as addi-

tional GWRRA programs and studies, has provided a wealth of information for use in establishing a comprehen-

sive Rider Education Program. Through Commitment, Education and Application, we can reduce our accident

rate significantly. Listed below are several benefits of a fully implemented GWRRA Rider Education Program at the

Chapter level:

Increased rider knowledge

Increased rider safety skills

Prevention of accidents

Reduced injuries

Reduced fatalities

Improved general public image of motorcyclists

Enhanced enjoyment of motorcycle riding

The motorcycle community is already realizing many positive benefits from the GWRRA Rider Education Program.

Through the efforts of the Rider Education Officers and participation of the membership and others, we will reach

our goal of establishing the safest motorcycle environment possible.

Level I: Safety by Commitment - The first big step to success

Level I of the Rider Education Program is also referred to as Safe Miles. It represents the commitment of the Rider

and/or the Co-Rider to practice safe motorcycle operation whenever they operate their motorcycle.

Safety is a state of mind which can only be attained through total commitment. Every successful accomplishment

begins with a commitment to reach the intended objective. This is true of the Rider Education Program and in-

cludes a promise to learn for the sake of Rider, Co-Rider, friends and family, and others on the road.

Though there is no mileage requirement to enter Level I, the commitment to safe riding is tracked by the number

of accident free miles since joining GWRRA. Accident free miles are accumulated in 5,000 mile increments and

may be updated at yearly intervals. Requirement: Verbal commitment to ride safely at all times. No cost to sign up. Patches available at $6.00 per participant Receive: "Safe Miles" patch, Rider (or Co-rider) Rocker, and mileage

pin. (Taken from http://gwrra.org/regional/ridered/levelsprogram.html).

At the next chapter meeting we will check everyone’s status for the Level 1 Commitment.

Happy September Everyone! That means Fall weather and Fall rides. This year is rolling by so fast and

soon winter will be upon us. Fall is Kimberly favorite time of year; it's not too hot and too cold...just right.

Hopefully we can get a few more rides in.

We got a chance to attend the Wings Across Tennessee gathering at St. Jude to turn in our donations.

This was a great day and a great feeling to be among so many giving people coming together for a such won-

derful cause. It has been said that every little bit counts. This rang to be true because we got to hear from a

St. Jude patient that got to be a co-rider on a Goldwing on his trip to Memphis. He and his family shared

their testimony with us which was truly a blessing. Keep up the great work everyone and let's exceed our financial donation for next year.

Below was taken from District Newsletter

It has been an “Awesome” summer of travel for us and now it’s time for us to put in some work! We have made our first chapter visit as District MECP. After attending Chapter N fun-tastic fun day, we drove to Chapter K’s gathering in Dickson, TN. We received wonderful hospitality from Chapter Directors Larry and Sandra Tatum, dined on a delicious meal, and continued to have great fellowship and fun.

Last but not least thank you, congratulations and welcome Sandy Hayes (Chapter TN-N) and Kimberly/Robert Burleson (Chapter TN-T). These members have stepped up to become their chapter’s Membership Enhance-ment Co-ordinators. We would like to thank you for taking on this task of fun. We want you to know we are here for you and just a phone call or email away!

Don’t forget the District Picnic. This is our first one and the District Team has planned an excellent time for you. We are expecting to see all of your smiling faces on September 29th.

6

Well let me see—we have had a lot going on since the August newsletter. I thought I would share all the fun we

had by adding summaries of the events.

On August 18, I attended the Medic First Aid Class held in Cool Springs and taught by Jim and Mary Cobb. I

need to get that patch, along with all my GWRRA patches, and get them added to my vest. Now that I have my

trike, I look forward to wearing the vest with all the patches. You are right Tony, I do think I am on top of the world!!

August 25th was Chapter N’s Fun Day. What a great time was had by all. I had a lot of fun taking pictures and

capturing memories. I am told we had over 100 participants. Thanks to all of you in TN-N for the team spirit

you showed. A total of 22 of our members participated in Fun Day. Everyone found a task and the event when

forward without a glitch.

We had our last of three fund raisers for St. Jude on September 8th. On this day we collected over $1200. Seems

that people have a real heart for the children of St. Jude. You hear all kinds of stories. And there is always at

least 1 person who has had or was currently having treatment at St. Jude. No greater pride than to know we are

helping to save lives. Eighteen of us had fun while helping the children of St. Jude.

We had our monthly meeting on September as well. After we had completed our day collecting for St. Jude, we

traveled to Old Country Store for our meeting. We had a great turn out for the meeting with a total of 26 mem-bers present. I had a game ready for the group and had hidden a peel and stick dot on the front of one of the

chairs. Teo was the lucky winner and took away the $5 gift card for Subway.

And then the greatest day we had all been waiting for, Wings Across Tennessee. James and I were the first two

who arrived at the meeting point where we waited for the other Wingers to arrive. Bill and Shirley Mullins,

Oliver and Gattie, Reginald and Kim and Al joined us at various stages of the ride. I was a little worried at first

because there were not many bikes by 10:00, but when the officers blocked traffic and routed us to the Interstate,

we had a rainbow of colors of bikes—approximately 40.

Now what we have to look forward too. Let’s show them Chapter N is one seriously FUN chapter:

September 29, District Picnic Gladeville Community, Mt. Juliet: October 4, Dinner Ride, Neil’s BBQ, Dyers-

burg: October 6, Monthly Gathering, Old Country Store: October 11-14, Biloxi Mississippi Rally: October 20,

BUSY MONTH Yes, September has been a busy month. We moved our gathering to

the 2nd Sat, because of Labor Day. The 2nd Sat. of Sept. was also our Collection Day for St. Jude at Wal-Mart South in Jackson. The weather was much better for this collection

day. Last time we almost melted down. Check out the pictures on our website, you will see that Chapter N has FUN no matter what they are doing, even working for a very seri-ous cause. Someone forgot to tell Jeff Douglas that the bucket was for collecting money

not keeping the sun off his head.

After the St. Jude collection, everyone headed for the Old Country Store for our regu-

lar monthly gathering.

Our Dinner Ride on the 13th took us to the Rock-a-Billy Café in Selmer, TN. It was

CRUSIN Night and several folks had 50’s and 60’s cars on display. We laughed and en-joyed our meal. Everyone wants Don and Janet to have the next Dinner Ride as on their yacht. All of you who missed this trip missed a barrel of fun. It’s always a great time

when you get Janet talking about the boat, the big boat.

The 3rdSat. was Wings Across Tennessee week end. GWRRA members started in East

Tennessee and rode to Memphis, picking up more riders as they crossed the state. The annual ride is to deliver the money collected during the year. The ride starts on Friday morning and ends at the St. Jude Hospital at noon on Saturday. Chapter N joined the

ride on Sat. morning. Avery and I didn’t get to make the trip this year, but 6 of our mem-

bers did. Our Chapter was proud to take $6,500.00 this year.

Got to stop writing for something more important. Avery has the trike out and is ready to ride to Shiloh National Military Park. The eagles are back. They nest in the

same tree every winter. Eagles mate for life and use the same nest year after year. It is interesting to watch the giant birds fly to the river, catch a fish and bring it back to the nest. In the Spring, the pair will raise 1 or 2 babies. Your Chapter should plan a ride to

watch the eagles, plus there are lots of other things to do in the area. Shiloh is home to

the World Famous Catfish Hotel,(see their ad in this newsletter).

We are all looking forward to the District Picnic on Sept. 29th. See you there….

8

It is official—-I am no longer dreamin’. If you have been hearing strange noises the last couple of weeks, it was

me. I can’t stop giggling. I go by the garage and say “It’s really mine.” When you get to see it up close, you will

understand why I felt the need to come up with a more descriptive name for myself. And I chose “Lady Eagle”

over “Biker Chick”. And now you must hear the ...Rest of the story.

The date was September 3, 2012, it seems like forever now. I had taken a week’s vacation and had my iPad at

our river hide-a-way. I found a really cool forum page for Gold Wing owners (or wanna be-me) and began to see

that there would be lots of opportunities to find my perfect bike/trike. Any color and any year was there, but I

quickly learned that if I bought the bike and then added the conversion kit, I would pay as much as a new 2012

trike. So I turned my efforts to looking for trikes. After a full week of looking at trikes all over the United States

and knowing that I would not travel to faraway lands to buy my trike, I sent an email to Tony and asked him to let

other chapters know I was in the market to purchase my trike.

In just 2 short days, Tony was calling to let us know that someone would be contacting me about a trike that

was for sale. I made contact on Friday, September 7th and learned from the wife, about the trike. I told Eldon the description; she said it was a Hannigan, was gold, her asking price and that I had told her we would drive to look

at it on Saturday. But because she had another person planning to look at it as well, Eldon told me to call her

back and let her know that I would buy the trike. Yep, you heard it right—sight unseen I called her back and told

her I wanted it and that I would come the next day and pay her and would pick it up on Saturday.

With final arrangements for funds and check in hand, we finally left for New Market, Alabama at about 2:00

and arrived on the premises about 5:30. And when we walked into that huge farm garage, “I knew”, I was going to

love this trike. On August 3, we had traveled to Hannigan Trike in Murray Kentucky to tour the premises and

learn all about how Hannigan Trike kits are made. On the showroom floor that day, was a 2006 Gold Trike with a

beautiful pin stripe. And I fell in love with it. It was one of those things that you know when you see it—this is

the one. Just one problem—it was not for sale. This trike in Alabama was not a Hannigan but it was a 2006 Gold

trike with beautiful pin stripe and looked almost identical to the one on the showroom floor. The only problem I

had was that I had never driven anything that was a manual shift but Eldon came with Debbie and me and kindly

agreed to hook up the Hannigan trailer to the GL1800 Gold bike with the Champion conversion kit and bring it

home. We pulled onto the property at midnight and just barely missed that storm—thanks Tony.

Then came the stress. After church on Sunday, Eldon drove me to the middle school and made me take over as

rider. Mental note to self “do not hold the gas so tight while you are going over speed bumps” because the trike

speeds out of control when it bounces over the hump. Of course I yelled for Eldon to help. And was he consider-

ate----NOOOOO. He told me “Don’t call for me because I cannot help you from back here. And NEVER let go of

the handle bars.” After church the next Sunday I decided I might as well go for it. So I turned on the trike and

sat for a while as I tried to remember what to do. I tried to start it but it would not start. Ah ha—that clutch thing. Gotta’ use that to get it to start. Finally in the driveway and now up one from neutral. Let out clutch

slowly while giving gas quickly. Wow! Out of the gate way too fast. Yep!! Dead again. Try again. Yep! Dead

again. Had a hard talk with self. “You can do this”. Up the hill I go. Frightened to death because I felt it was

going way too fast. Two more evenings after work just like this. Then while sitting in the garage trying to remem-

ber why it would not start this time—I learned that if I went all the way to the bottom of the gears, the first gear

was not Neutral. Imagine my surprise when now it went right up that hill and not dead once. Well except the one

time I forgot to pull in the clutch when I stopped. People—it has not been a pretty sight! I was tempted to ask

my director at work, who is a doctor, if he would write me a prescription for valium.

Blessed is he who has learned to laugh at himself for he shall never cease to

be entertained. - John Boswell

9

But now you have seen Eldon’s article and I guess it wasn’t too bad. Yep, except for the few times I forgot to

use the clutch at takeoff and when I needed to start the trike again. But the good news is “I know I can do this.”

And I am really jazzed.

ALL OF THE GEAR ALL OF THE TIME

RIDE OFTEN, BE SAFE, HAVE FUN!!!!

What are brothers for? After

Eldon gave the trike a test

drive before we left New Mar-

ket, he insisted that if I just

felt I had to have a Hanni-

gan, then he would sell me his trike and buy this one.

NOT!

Some one told me that if I got someone who was patient to

help me learn, it would not

take long. And I think I

said, you mean not Eldon.

But really—he has been

great. I can do this!!

Yes, it is really mine!!!

A quilt consisting of a segment representing each

of the Chapters and Districts within Region N is

currently under construction by a few of our fine

members from Virginia. A 10” by 10” cloth panel

has been requested from each of our Chapters. The

segments should be no larger than 10” by 10”, with the display panel being no larger than 8” by 8”.

This will leave a 1” border around all four sides of

the panel, so that it may be sewn into the quilt.

The panels will then be used to fabricate a two

sided quilt, which will be awarded based on one

ticket drawn at the 2012 Virginia Rally In the Val-

News From District

Educator’s Ramblings Sept 2012—Jim Cobb chapter G (taken from District Newsletter)

Every month I sit at the computer and try to decide what to write about that will mean something to everyone

who reads my ramblings. Sometimes I succeed with a little tidbit that almost makes sense, at least to me. Some-

times I don’t even make sense to myself. Other times I search the internet looking for tips that I can pass on to

the members that may affect how they ride and react to things they encounter on the road.

Here is a sampling of what I discovered on Progressive Insurance’s website. These apply not only to the bike

rider but also to the auto driver as well.

Tips for sharing the road

Because bikes are considerably smaller than other vehicles, it’s important that everyone on the road take a

few precautions in order to share the road safely. Here are a few tips to help you:

Behind the handlebars

Suit up. Choose a helmet—the most important piece of safety equipment—that meets Department of Trans-

portation standards. And, wear other protective gear, like a suit or jacket, face shield, goggles, boots and

gloves.

Ride sensibly. Know your personal limits and ride at a pace that’s comfortable for you (and within the speed

limit).

Build new skills— To help strengthen your riding skills, consider enrolling in motorcycle training courses, like

the GWRRA ARC or TRC. These are available around the state and at very attractive rates compared to some

of the private companies that are giving classes.

Behind the wheel

Be aware of others. Stay a safe distance (about three seconds) behind bikes and other vehicles and, always

use turn signals. It communicates your intentions to everyone on the road—and it’s the law.

Limit distractions. Don’t use your mobile phone and avoid other distractions, like eating or personal groom-

ing. Secure loose cargo. Securely fasten any luggage, bicycles, skis and other cargo you might transport on

the outside of your car. And, don’t throw anything out of the window.

Now let me share with you something that happened to us this past Saturday night as we were on our way

home from Huntsville. We were coming through a light in Winchester. We had a green light. There was a car

coming toward us and turning to their right. All of a sudden from our right came a car running the red light.

They hit the car we were meeting as it made it’s turn to the right. Thankfully no one was injured and there was

slight damage to either car. If we had only been a couple of seconds earlier, we would have been the car hit.

Moral of the story: Look out for the other guy because they aren’t looking for you. Drivers are distracted by

just about anything. Cell phones being the most prevalent ones. I don’t know if the person that ran the red light

was distracted or what. She ran it— period. She wasn’t looking for the other person nor watching what she was

doing.

The Life and Times of Nolan Nation

Hello everybody, I know I have missed some of the last meetings, but school has started and I have been

spending some time with my other Grandfather. We have been going to the river and fishing. I have not caught a

lot, but the ones we catch are sure good tasting. Since school started, I have not been able to go much because

of doing homework and stuff. I have been helping PeePaw mow the yard and I have also been riding my four-

wheeler.

Got my report card this week, and wow, I did not get grounded this time. I got a C average. That is only two

letters away from an A. Pretty good I think!! My Mom helped with my Science project; we made an edible plant

cell. I made a 105 on it.

I have been hiding and watching MeeMaw and Aunt Sandy riding the Trikes. What a sight; it looks like two

monkeys fighting a banana ‘cause it is real slick around my house.

Better go now before MeeMaw reads this. See you at the next meeting.

Getting To Know You

GWRRA TN-N

Hello, my name is Eldon Seaton. This is a great idea that will allow us to get to know more about each of our

members in Chapter N. So I will start with a little about my roots.

I was born in Victoria, Arkansas and I grew up in Luxora, Arkansas, but I now live in Parsons, Tennessee.

I work at Jackson Madison County General Hospital as an emergency room paramedic/compliance coordinator

and have worked there for 16 years.

Over the years, I have owned a Honda 750, 1985 Goldwing 1200, and 1998 Goldwing 1500 motorcycle. I cur-

rently have a 2007 Goldwing GL1800 motorcycle with a Hannigan trike conversion kit.

My favorite trip on my motorcycle was to the mountains of Gatlinburg.

I joined GWRRA in April 2010. And I have been a member of Chapter N since I first joined GWRRA. I am cur-

rently the Assistant Chapter Director (ACD).

I am married to Debbie Seaton and we have two children—Shannon Seaton and Candy Nation. Our kids are

38, and 30 years old and they live in Parsons, Tennessee. Some of our favorite hobbies other than riding mo-

torcycles include time at our getaway at the river and spending time with company.

One of my favorite memories while

in GWRRA is the time we spent at

our last Winterfest. We have a lot

of fun at these gatherings.

Meet all my family. Shannon, Hayley, Karen, Me, Debbie, Jacob and Nolan.

Olive Garden Salad Dressing

■1/2 C. mayonnaise

■1/3 C. white vinegar

■1 tsp. vegetable oil

■2 Tbsp. corn syrup

■2 Tbsp. Parmesan cheese

■2 Tbsp. Romano cheese

■1/4 tsp. garlic salt

■1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning

■1/2 tsp. parsley flakes

■1 Tbsp. lemon juice

One of the best things about the Olive Garden is their never-ending salad bowl. They sell the house dressing right

there at the restaurant, but I thought it would be easier (and more frugal) to try and duplicate the Olive Garden

salad dressing at home. A quick internet search turned up dozens of recipes, most of which were exactly like the

one above.

What’s nice about the Olive Garden salad dressing recipe is that the ingredients are readily available. In fact, you

may already have them in your refrigerator/pantry. Toss with fresh tomatoes, Vidalia onions, black olives, crou-

tons, pickled pepperoncini and freshly grated Parmesan cheese to give you a true Olive Garden restaurant experi-

ence.

A New State Law

Governor Haslam signed a bill into law on May 10, 2012 and effective July 1, 2012 any child who is a passenger

on a motorcycle must have their feet reach foot pegs.

Under the amended Tennessee Code Annotated (the State Law) Section 55-8-164 and 55-9- 303 “An operator

commits an offense who, on the streets of any municipality, roads of any county, or the highways of this state,

carries a child as a passenger on a motorcycle whose feet are not on foot pegs. Provided, the provisions of this

subsection shall not apply to persons riding in a motorcycle sidecar.”

First offense is a mandatory 50.00 fine. 10.00 of the fine will go to the state general fund, and 40.00 to the Child

Safety fund.
