Editor’s Note:

At the time of the printing of this

issue, Jules House of Blues was forced

to close its doors. Fortunately for

you the live music lover, the owners of the venue have informed us that they are currently looking for a new

roof under which to reopen. Rock on.

* * *

For future issues, the Go Guide is holding a local photo contest. This is your chance for fame and fortune (as long as your idea of fortune doesn’t include $$). Photos should showcase an RGV location, activity, etc. If your photo is selected, you will be contacted via email for follow-up information to be published in the next issue. All entries should be emailed to thegoguide@

gmail.com and should be cropped to fit in a 4.25” x 11” space.

GRAB some

Instead of a magazine of ads and so-cial status photos, the Go Guide is about providing you the information you need to enjoy our cities more. Locally owned and operated small businesses help our community, and in the GO Eat section, it is all you will find. Every restaurant here adds to the economy of the Rio Grande Valley the honest way. In addition to being locally owned, these restaurants

are each special in their own way. Take The Office Bar and Grill in McAllen, did you know that none of their food ever sees a freezer? Yep, everything is made in-house all the way down to their bread and salad dressing. Been to House Wine? Love it? Well we do too, especially their affection for locally sourced produce like vegetables from Yahweh Farms. These are the types of

GRUBbusinesses and arti-cles you will find in the Go Guide, places like Mama’s Pizzeria, using

recipes passed down from generations past and the young Cup-cake Factory, putting McAllen on the map and giving back to the community. Sounds better than franchises and big business huh? We think so too.

“INSTEAD OF A MAGAZINE OF ADS AND SOCIAL STATUS PHOTOS, THE GO GUIDE IS ABOUT PROVIDING YOU THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO ENJOY OUR CITIES MORE.”

ver find yourself curious about what bars have specials on what nights? Ever searched Facebook’s pages to see ‘events’ you’re invited to or wish you were invited to? Well the search is over: we’ve put it all together for you. The Go Guide wants to help you go out and drink and know what you’ll find when you arrive at your destination. You might have heard or been to some of the hit bars on our list, such as Empire Lounge, and experienced the high ceilings and high class atmosphere; or, you may have always heard of the legendary Sophie’s Saloon, but never been to this gem tucked away on South 10th St. Maybe you’re looking for a nice glass of wine, craft beers, or bottle service…Either way, you’ll be happy to see that we’ve listed everything out for you the easy way. Hangovers, brain fried from too much computer use, or simply a case of the lazy’s: we’ve got you covered. It’s easy to locate what is happening each day of the week, where, and how much it will cost you. Put on your party clothes and dive right in to a drink at any of these awesome hang-outs.

liveLive music is happening all

over our cities at various ven-ues and of differing genres. Don’t like the local band feel? Well that’s OK, we’ve got in-and-outside of the Valley gigs lined up for you in our GO Livesection. Check here for specif-ic listings of bands, supporting acts, cover prices, and more. If you haven’t been to places like Jules House of Blues or Fall-back Records to check out the local music scene, or attended a show booked by Tigers Blood, it’s OK, because it’s here. Not into blues or the indie scene? Well that’s OK too, in upcom-ing months we will be featur-

ing music from all genres. Have a favorite band you like to see in the Rio Grande Valley or fa-vorite venue you love but don’t see listed here? Give us your feedback and we’ll look into to getting that placed for you. We’re here for your ears.

LGBTGguide

If you didn’t know, now you know. The Rio Grande Valley has bars, clubs, and special events specifically catered to the LGBT community. We at the Go Guide think this is great, but we are still putting together a good list of information for you. In McAllen, we’ll feature places like Jackie O’s, but where else do you like to go? Let us know and we’ll let you know more in upcoming issues.

WE VALLEYYEAH,

What we like about communities the most is people practicing common ownership of the place they live. We own our cities when we spend time making them better, informing ourselves on what is going on, and sharing our experiences of this with others. In the GO Community section, we will help you do just that. We’ll inform you about big city events like Palm Fest, interactive sessions like the I&E, and fundraising and charity events like those

put on by the McAllen Junior League. We want to provide you with as much information as we can on events that are open to the public. Included in this is our dear love and appreciation for our locally run Farmer’s Markets in McAllen, Weslaco, and Mission as well as the farmers who orchestrate their own educational events. The more we embrace things that come from the Valley, the more we give back to our cities. In turn, good karma usually follows. Win win.
