“Changed for Good”As I write, we have recently seen rioting in anumber of our towns and cities. In theaftermath, one commentator pointed thefinger of blame at “the Church” for not doingenough within their communities. Whilst thisis clearly not the root of the problem, perhapsthese events should prompt us to consider therelationship between Church and community. We live selfish and materialistic age and, as the Church – Christ’s bodyon Earth – we are called to be counter-cultural. In Matthew 16:25, Jesussaid, “Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses hislife for me will find it.” What on earth does this strange, contradictorystatement mean and how is it relevant to our situation? When I was at school, a teacher asked my class a question: “What do youwant to do with your life?” the answers fell into two groups. Roughlyhalf the class simply wanted to be happy and the other half wanted to dosomething to make the world a better place. Again, two seeminglycontradictory responses - one selfish and the other selfless. However,n o w, having watched my classmates, as well as my friends, my familyand my work colleagues, I’ve realised that they aren’t contradictoryanswers – they are one and the same.S i m i l a r l y, Jesus was attempting to explain to his disciples why they mustchoose to follow his path. This is the only way to life. Really, we allknow this. We only have to look around at the history of a worldgoverned by different definitions of power, and we see that the rulers arereplaced by other rulers, that the governors die, just like the governed. Noone can get their own way by force all the time. God’s life is the only realand lasting life that there is, and he wishes to share it with us. T h edisciples eventually got the point of what Jesus was saying, and thanks tothem and succeeding generations of Christians, we have a communitythat will help us to imitate Jesus. To help in bringing this into our own villages, Andy recently asked asmany people as possible to complete a questionnaire. He received anexcellent number of responses, most of which were very positive,

referring to a very general sense of new life and a promising future. Anumber of people commented about us being a welcoming church, whichis relaxed and inclusive, with a growing sense of cohesion. It was alsohighlighted that there is lots going on and broad participation isencouraged. Importantly, given the current issues, there is an appreciationof the provision and priority given to Children’s and youth work.Of the needs going forward, one with huge relevance to the comment inmy opening paragraph is the need for us, as a Church, to have more of anoutward focus on our community. To demonstrate faith in action. To meetpeople where they are.To discern what we do about this and the other themes arising from thequestionnaire, the Parish will be having an “Awayday” on Saturday 8thOctober to produce an action plan to assist us in becoming a Church, whichimitates Jesus in the Icknield Way villages. (See item in Notes on page 21)This afternoon, I took my family to see the musical “Wicked” in theWest-End. In the show, the first thing you notice about the maincharacter, Elphaba (who becomes known as “The Wicked Witch of theWest”) is her skin colour – an unconventional shade of green. Somewhatstubborn, she is a strong character of high moral standing and is notafraid to stand up for what she believes is right and rise above any tauntsshe may receive. Elphaba is a naturally good judge of character and has acaring nature, revealed through her love of animals and the support shegives to her sister Nessarose, a wheelchair user. She is “different” tothose around her and her ways are selfless and counter-cultural (and notwicked at all!!), which is why she is marginalised. However, towards theend of the story, one of the other characters who has got to know hersings “because I knew you, I have been changed for good”.Having a relationship with Jesus Christ changes our lives “for good”. TheChurch, as the hands and feet of Jesus on Earth is also called to changethings “for good”. This is what the commentator was calling for in ournation, and this is what we are seeking to do in this Parish, so that ourcommunities are “changed for good”.With every blessing,

Jonathan

Flying Bomb (Doodlebug!!)Judith Dakin, one of thedaughters of the Rev Clarke,Rector of Heydon Church duringWWII, writes of her experiencesas a child whilst living at HeydonPlace. Judith still comes back tovisit us in Heydon with herhusband. She much enjoyed living in the area and recalls many happymemories of those days.On a winters night in January (I can't remember the date!) my two sisters,Sheila and Bridget and myself were sitting near the all night burner (can'tremember the proper name) playing rummy when suddenly there was aflash of lighting and the glass on the windows broke and came in. Werealized it was a flying bomb. Sheila immediately reacted by rushing outof the house without a coat to go down to the Chambers house who livedon the Chrishall road (I can't remember the name of the road) I think shethought that they might have been hit by the bomb, we just did not knowwhere it had landed whether on the house or in the garden. My motherwas not with us in the sitting room so we were not sure if she was alrightand visa versa she was not sure if we were alright. After what seemed along time to me we linked up. I think because I was youngest it affected me more than anyone else and

my temperature shot up, I also had a minor cut under my left eye. Icannot remember much after that only that later my parents had got acamp bed to put me on to sleep and they put beds under the stairs forSheila and Bridget. My father and Mother for the next two nights sleptin the armchairs. It was half an hour after the bomb landed that the Air raid Wardensarrived. In those days they were able to track the flying bombs but thisone had stopped making a noise quite a distance away so they lost it, sothat was why it took them time. They were very caring. I don'tremember much else about it , I think I soon recovered and I was dueback at boarding school. I was glad to get away. Because my father wasnot a farmer and although we kept cows, pigs and chickens as well asgrowing sugar beat , we were not allowed to have the glass put back.Instead we had some blackout material put over the windows, Iremember in the summer we brought it down halfway during the day asit was so hot.I did not realize at the time the way it had affected me, but I rememberwhen I was at school being terrified by a thunder storm, it was not thenoise but the lighting. It took me a very long time to get over it, becauseI remember when we were living in Shrewsbury when our boys were intheir teens I was still scared of the lighting!!!! It’s strange.Heydon has always been a special place for me as I used to wander allover the place and spend a lot of time in the wood behind 'Picotts'. Ipretended that it was a house and divided it up in my mind as to wherethe kitchen was etc. I still come back once a year and go to the KingWilliam for lunch with my husband Stan and then we have tea with LilyNegus and remember past times. My other lovely memory was of goingto a house where a lady played a harp, and I would sit on the floor andlisten to her.

A Trip to the Undertakers!Last month, following a visit from Nigel, the Area Manager for CecilNewlings Funeral Directors, I was invited to attend a workshop at theirRoyston branch. My nosiness got the better of me and, on a Wednesdayafternoon, three others and me arrived at the undertakers for a guided tour.As Nigel explained, it is a profession shrouded in mystery and sometimesfear for lots of people, but I can safely say it was a very informative, interesting and light-hearted look at what goes on behind the scenes. The presentation gave us information on the various forms and regulationsthat are required following a death (and there are many) and how theundertakers deal with very different communities and religions and theirvarious requirements. Nigel explained how important it is to be aware of thetraditions of each community but that everyone is very keen to help him andalways show him as much respect as he shows them.He went on to tell us many other interesting facts, including how thedeceased are always transported feet first – from leaving the place they havepassed away in, to entering and leaving the church. The only exception isthe clergy, who travel everywhere headfirst. This way, during their ownfuneral service, they are facing the congregation! After the presentation, we were shown the ‘coffin show room’. This causeda bit of giggling, but was interesting and I was surprised at the selection, although I’m pleased to say that nothing in particular caught my eye! Manypeople nowadays lean towards the ‘green’ option and have a cardboardcoffin, although these are almost twice the price of a wooden one andextremely heavy! Nigel showed us how the coffins were put together andthe various colours and handles that were available. Moving on from thecoffins, we were shown the Chapel of Rest, which was a very peaceful room, the mortuary, an extremely interesting room (perhaps not everyone’s cup oftea!) and the funeral cars.I thoroughly enjoyed the tour and although being an undertaker is not a jobthat would suit everyone it is an essential service carried out, certainly inthis case, by caring professionals with the utmost respect. So, if you are dying to see what goes on at the undertakers, give Nigel acall. He holds around 12 workshops a year and is very happy to show thatthere is nothing very mysterious involved in being a Funeral [email protected] Erica Debnam

The Summer that was 2011Little Chishill Open GardensThe open garden held on 19 June at Little Chishill Manor in aid of St Nicholas Church and supportingEast Anglia Air Ambulance, raised£2,400. We were fortunate with the weatherand everyone enjoyed themselves. The committee would like to thankall those whose generosity and hard work made the day such a success.

St Mark’s WeekendOn the 18th and 19th of June a gang of lively youngsters from theParish spent the weekend at St Mark’s College in Audley End. With thehelp of Theresa and Jonathan Lowe, Amy Debnam, Debbie Caviel andthe wonderful staff at Audley End everyone had a fantastic timerounded off by an amazing service, run by the children, in the restoredchapel at St Mark’s with a barbeque in one of its beautiful courtyards. One of the participants said “the best bits were: the assault course, theservice, the film, the music, my friends, the archery, thetrampolining…”

Summer Celebrations at St. NicholasSpread over three days during the first weekend of July. On Fridaynight we had great fun at the village rounders match including playersfrom the Friday evening church youth group.During Saturday the 'Treasure Hunt' walk was won by a visiting family.

On Saturday Evening we had an amazing Barn Dance, to live music, inThe Great Barn at Elmdonbury. We are very grateful to Robert Smith forallowing us to use such a splendid venue for village events.Sunday afternoon saw a very popular 'Strawberry Cream Tea' in thechurchyard. The weekend was rounded off by an open air 'Songs ofPraise’, created from choices of favourite hymns suggested and

The front cover of the summeredition of the ‘Web,’ set me tothinking and reminiscing. There areso many opportunities in this area, especially in the summer, to enjoysport. Tennis, cricket, swimming andof course golf. I have often declinedkind invitations from neighbours andfriends to accompany them, as aguest, for a round of golf. Why do Idecline? Well, although I feel certainI am missing out - mainly because Iam a lifelong sport incompetent.Chris and Tom my two sons seemedinstantly adept at any sport that cametheir way, the latter gained his highestG.C.S.E. achievement in sports. Allthe members of my family, exceptme, swim like fishes. Indeed, oncemy children, when still toddlers, progressed beyond bobbing around ina rubber ring – I was out of theirleague. In fact I have attempted golf justonce. I was still at school and havingcompleted ‘A’ levels had some timeavailable before the end of the

summer term in 1964. The head ofsixth form at my London schoolarranged for us to go for a morning’sinstruction at Rose Hill Golf course. The morning was fine and my sixthform colleagues were obviouslyenjoying the activity. However, nomatter how I attended to instruction, altered my stance, modified my grip,or addressed the ball – I was quiteunable to hit it. Gradually the turfround my ‘T’ began to resemble theSomme in miniature. But then – for whatever reason – Idid hit the ball with a glorious, resounding thwack! All would havebeen well, had it been going in theright direction. The ball described anelegant trajectory, rising steadily atabout mach two – to ricochet off theback of the instructor’s head. Thedeflection sent it soaring skywards.I was banned from any further part inthe proceedings – and as for me – Ihave never again raised a golf bat inearnest. John Mills

Christian Aid Week 2011Please forgive this late butnonetheless heartfelt thank you toeveryone who gave so generouslytot the door-to-door collection inMay.This year there were collections inStrethall, Heydon and DuddenhoeEnd. Altogether we raised £716.33,which is an amazing result fromjust three tiny villages. An extra thank you for filling intax forms as this does addconsiderably to the total. Probablythe biggest thanks should go to the

collectors; Jane Duffus, Liz Stottand Sue Perks. It is always a hugejoy to be able to send money thatwill help to improve the lives ofsome of the world’s poorestpeople-often through smallschemes like bringing clean waterto a village where previously thewomen have had to walk a longway carrying pots or tin cans ontheir heads or shoulders.Carolyn Hughes

resurrection?” “Is the Bible reallythe word of God?” “Isn’t faith just apsychological crutch?” “David iscelebrated as Israel’s greatest king, but had wives and concubines. Isn’tthat hypocritical?” “Why does Godallow suffering?” “Isn’t the biblejust a bunch of made up stories?”Or maybe you want to know, “Howcan I become a bishop?” Bishop Stephen boldly asked atThaxted church in February, afterhis visit to this parish, “What wouldyou rather have? Things to do and not to do with a smartphone in church

I equipped myself with a smartphone earlier this year – an iPhone 4 for thetechnophiles. It’s wonderful. Among the Apps I put onto it are the EnglishStandard Version translation of the bible and the King James Version. This isreally handy, as my iPhone is with me most of the time (in fact Sarah says weare umbilically connected). So if you see me using my iPhone in church, please don’t assume I have lost interest in the service and am texting a friendor reading The Ugley Vicar’s blog. There are also search engines in the Apps. So if you want to know where itsays “seek ye first the Kingdom of God” or what the answer was to thequestion “But who do you say that I am?” you can put the words into thesearch engine and be taken to the passage. If you can’t remember whether itsays “seek and ye shall find” or “ask and ye shall find”, put them into thesearch engine and find. The KJV App which I have also lists the books of the bible alphabetically aswell as in the order they appear in the bible. So if you can’t rememberwhether The Song of Solomon is before the Psalms or after Ecclesiastes, youcan save yourself the embarrassment of having to ask. You can highlightpassages, and make notes. I used my iPhone at the London Men’s Conventionin May to take notes of the talks as there wasn’t enough light where I wassitting. When someone refers to a bible passage by its reference, you can lookit up straightaway – no more fumbling with the pages when the person leadingthe service reminds us that Romans 5 verse 1 is foundational. So I thought ashort list of things to do and not to do with one's smartphone during the servicemight be handy.
