The final Key Attribute of the recently revised strategic plan focuses on the financial sustainability of the Chamber. With the drastic change in economy over a

year ago, it became apparent that the Board should have a renewed focus on this. Times have become very different than they were five years ago when the previous strategic plan was developed; goals regarding the financial direction and future needed to be revisited under the current set of circumstances.

As with many of our members, the Chamber recognized the need to evaluate all programs and offerings to ensure diverse and reliable revenue streams, while offering members quality programs and services that are responsive to your needs. To that end the breakfast programs were streamlined, the annual Business Expo has been discontinued and changes are in store for the 2012 Winter’s Palette.

We heard what you were saying—your time and money is in high demand and you need to allocate it where you will get the biggest return on investment. Relevant topics for breakfast program will include things to help your professional development and growth of your business. You told us the Expo was not an efficient use of your time, and that you wanted some new excitement in an old favorite—the Winter’s Palette.

These changes have allowed staff time to be utilized to serve you better, too! The purchase of our new membership management software streamlines internal processes and offers us the opportunity to customize correspondence to members; provide excellent tracking of referrals for your business and better direct potential clients to your business through the searchable online membership directory.

What hasn’t changed is our ongoing dedication to providing and promoting business opportunities and connections that promote and enhance county-wide economic and civic well-being.

Additionally, the Chamber partners with other organizations to provide additional opportunities for members in selecting merchant card services, health insurance and ancillary products, as well as options for purchasing more cost effective energy. Not only do these programs add value to your membership, but they provide additional revenue to the Chamber.

Over the past three months, I have provided updates on Chamber activity as they related to the four Key Attributes of the Strategic Plan, all of which are a result of member input. As we move forward in accomplishing the goals set forth, please take a moment and share with us your thoughts on any changes that have been made, or to let us know what changes you feel should be considered. Your needs are what drive the programs and benefits offered to all members of the Chamber. Thank you for your input and involvement!

discount Program roll outby Deb Adamik, President & CEO, Main Street Gettysburg

The Gettysburg Convention & Visitors Bureau and its partner, International Event Partners, are inviting Adams County and the regional business community to a merchandise show on Thursday, September 8, to preview the official merchandise for the 150th anniversary commemoration of the Civil War and Gettysburg Address.

The CVB has been working with IEP in creating and trademarking the official 150th logo, as well as developing merchandise for the commemoration.

At this event, the businesses can get their first look at the new merchandise and purchase items at wholesale. Items include clothing, souvenirs and household items. The show will be held 5-7pm at the Gettysburg Hotel’s Ballroom. Refreshments will be served. For more information or to register, please contact Stacey Fox at 717.338.1052 or [email protected].

Main Street Gettysburg was the catalyst in working with the Gettysburg College, GARMA, the Gettysburg Convention and Visitors Bureau, Adams County Transit and several businesses in town to create a Town and Gown Committee. Currently chaired by Maggie Baldwin from the College, they have been proactively brainstorming ways to promote the town and its many sites, restaurants and shops to connect students, parents, and visitors to the Gettysburg College campus. Through websites, written communications and special promotional activities the college has been informing its extensive college community about the wonderful goods and services offered just blocks away in downtown Gettysburg.

Through this partnership, a Gettysburg College student, Rachel Wynn, who is also a Main Street Gettysburg intern spearheaded the effort to create a discount program for Gettysburg College students and parents. Downtown businesses have signed up to provide their own unique discount to College students and parents. There are currently 37 businesses offering discounts and it is growing in popularity. Students and parents just have to show their ID to receive the discount. This exciting new program is set to roll out on Friday, September 2 during GARMA’s First Friday. The theme for this special First Friday is “Fall Frolic and Welcome Gettysburg College Students.”

There will be a table set up at the College in the Event Activities Center from 6–8pm letting the students know what will be going on that evening. The table will have prize coupons, fliers, trolley maps, and future First Friday dates.

This collaborative effort sets the stage for new and returning students and parents to establish relationships with their business neighbors, as well as present opportunities for businesses to have sustained business through the off-tourist season. This is just another example of how working together can create great ideas that improve our community.

The Gettysburg Outdoor Antique Show returns to the streets of Downtown Gettysburg on Saturday, September 24th. This one day event transforms Gettysburg into a unique antique paradise for both buyers and sellers, radiating in all four directions out from Lincoln Square. Over 125 dealers from 13 states are expected to exhibit their best wares between 7am-4pm, rain or shine. This large gathering of exhibitors will feature antiques and collectibles from

across historic Americana from the primitive frontier to the nouveau antiques of your youth. Period furniture, depression glass, art-deco, toys, early mechanicals, commercial art, china, kitchenware, and many collectible items of everyday life of the past 300 years will be available for you to see. You could find the bargain of the day strolling the streets of Downtown Gettysburg this Fall.

The event is sponsored by the Gettysburg Area Retail Merchants’ Association (GARMA) to help promote shopping in Downtown Gettysburg and to help raise funds for the various projects the group supports. GARMA is instrumental in decorating the streets of Gettysburg for the holidays, attracting shoppers to the area, supporting the general well being of the business climate in and around Gettysburg, and participating in joint partnerships with many area non-profit and governmental organizations like Main Street Gettysburg, the Gettysburg Adams Chamber of Commerce, the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, and more.

Do you have a business that could benefit from exhibiting at this Show? Please contact Show Director John Angstadt at [email protected] . The Gettysburg Outdoor Antique Show will return for its 45th year in May and September of 2012, so plan now to participate.

Gettysburg National Military Park maintenance employees were cutting through a fallen oak tree on Culp’s Hill when the chain saw hit bullets. The discovery was made on August 4, 2011, as maintenance employees cut a fallen oak tree that was resting on a boulder next to the Joshua Palmer marker on the east slope of Culp’s Hill summit. Two sections

of the tree trunk where the bullets were discovered have been moved to the park’s museum collections storage facility. As a relic of the Battle of Gettysburg, the tree sections with bullets will be treated to remove insects and mold and then added to the museum collections at Gettysburg National Military Park.
