The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Anne Gayman, Evergreen Heights Elementary School principal, for her outstanding service on Monday, September 26, at 7 P.M. in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
In her eight years as principal of Evergreen Heights Elementary School, Anne Gayman has helped initiate a strong sense of community among teachers, students and families. ―We all work together and support each other,‖ says Anne.
Anne‘s instructional leadership among staff has led to a healthy, transparent environment. On PLC Mondays, every grade level team meets in the library to review data, ask questions and make instructional decisions. According to Anne, ―This time allows our staff to be able to ask questions like, ‗How did you teach that skill?‘ It has opened the door for us to collaborate and work together to increase student achievement.‖
Evergreen Heights staff also attends an annual summer retreat. This summer‘s retreat focused on the seven strategies of assessment. The SIP leadership team selects the topic and helps plan the overnight event.
The hard work has paid off. MSP state test scores show that Evergreen Heights‘ overall 3rd grade reading scores rank
25th out of more than 1,000 schools in Washington State. Evergreen Heights 3rd and 5th graders outperformed the state average in both reading and math. Additionally, Evergreen Heights met AYP in all cells in both reading and mathematics in 2010-11 and are no longer in school improvement.

Prior to joining the Evergreen Heights staff, Anne worked as an assistant principal in South Kitsap and as a reading specialist and special education teacher in Bremerton. She has bachelor‘s degrees in elementary education and special education, a master‘s degree in curriculum and instruction, and a principal certification.

October 29 Golf Tournament to Benefit Tucker Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund
On Saturday, October 29, the Auburn High School (AHS) DECA Chapter, a student leadership organization for marketing and business students, is hosting a 9-hole golf tournament at Riverbend Golf Complex in Kent, Washington. All proceeds will go to the Tucker Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Registration starts at 8:00 a.m. Play begins at 9:00 a.m.
Pre-registration is also available at www.auburn.wednet.edu/ahs. Access the online registration by clicking on the October 29 calendar listing for the ―Tucker Memorial Golf Tourney.‖ Same-day registration is also available at 8:00 a.m. at the Riverbend Golf Complex. The cost for an adult is $100, and the student price is $50 with ASB. T-shirts will
be included for those who pre-register online; golf equipment will be provided for those who want to participate but don‘t have equipment.
The weekend before school started this year, Auburn lost a great friend, Tucker Johnson. The Tucker Johnson
Memorial Fund was established by Auburn DECA to provide scholarship funds to honor Tucker‘s outstanding character. Tucker‘s favorite sport was golf, so a golf tournament seemed to be a perfect way to raise money for the scholarship fund.
The scholarships will benefit students in his graduating class of 2012, who demonstrate outstanding character, and half of the proceeds will benefit Tucker‘s sister, McKinley, to assist with college expenses.
Auburn DECA is still seeking hole sponsors for the event. To be a sponsor or for more information, contact Lori Jacobs, AHS DECA advisor, at (253) 931-4880 or [email protected].

Alpac Elementary and Pioneer Elementary Honored as 2011 Schools of Distinction
Continuous improvement in student achievement led to a special honor for Alpac Elementary and Pioneer Elementary in the Auburn School District, along with 97 other schools across the state.
Alpac and Pioneer received the 2011 School of Distinction Award from The Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE),
the Association of Educational Service Districts (AESD), the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP), Phi Delta Kappa-Washington Chapter (PDK-WA), Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA), Washington State ASCD and Washington State School Directors‘ Association (WSSDA).
This represents the 5th annual School of Distinction award recognition in Washington State. Each regional Educational Service District will be hosting an award ceremony to recognize School of Distinction award winners.
Specifics of the methodology used to determine 2011 winners:
The 2011 performance, as with the previous five years, is translated into a ―Reading/Math Level
Index‖ and must meet the minimum threshold: at or above the state median for the grade band.
Unlike previous years where enough longitudinal data only existed in grades 4, 7 and 10, we now
have longitudinal data from 2006-2011 in all grades.
Three grade bands are used for calculation: 3, 4, and 5 for elementary schools, 6, 7 and 8 for
middle or junior high schools and 10 for high schools. A school must have data in two of three
grades to be considered for that band.
The final data point was calculated using the Measures of Student Progress (3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th
and 8th grade) and High School Proficiency Exam (10th grade) from spring 2011.
Using data from 2006-2011, provides six data points which identifies five improvement steps.
A Reading/Math Level Index is calculated for all grades in band... e.g. a K-8 school would be
eligible in both elementary and middle/junior high bands.
A school must have data in at least three of six years to be considered, one of which must be 2011.
"Improvement" is defined as the slope of linear trend over the five years.
The number of schools comprising 5% is based on the number of schools at each grade band with 2011 data.
Greg Lobdell, Co-founder and President of CEE noted, ―even though the diversity and context of the communities served by each of these schools across our state are vastly different, the hard work represented by this award is the same and the students are the real winners.‖

The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Wendy Dietzman, a fifth grade student at
Pioneer Elementary School, for being an outstanding student on Monday, November 28, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.

Teachers can count on Wendy to effectively guide small group activities and to speak up to correct issues
in the classroom and throughout the school. According to Wendy‘s second grade teacher, Mrs. Lee, ―Wendy always does the right thing even when no one is looking.‖

Auburn School Board to Honor Auburn Riverside High School ELL Teacher
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Jackie De Haven, Auburn Riverside High
School ELL teacher, for her outstanding service on Monday, November 28, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Jackie De Haven, an English Language Learner (ELL) teacher at Auburn Riverside High School, is committed to serving the needs of Auburn students who speak English as their second language.
Jackie‘s primary responsibility is to ensure each student receives the necessary support and instruction to
acquire English language skills so they can be successful in their mainstream classes. Students are
instructed in reading, writing, oral and acquisition skills. According to Jackie, ―Teaching our students English allows them access to school culture and learning.‖
Last school year Jackie helped 35 percent of her ELL students transition out of the program—one of the
highest exit rates in the district. Jackie motivates her students through interactive classroom activities including sing-a-longs, word art and photo bingo.
Jackie is a bilingual Spanish speaker. At age 13 she moved with her family to Mexico City from a rural
Ohio farm and had to learn another language quickly. Jackie learned from immersion just like her current
students. ―I can easily relate to my students who emigrate from other countries and are introduced to a new language and culture,‖ says Jackie.
Jackie has dedicated 11 years to Auburn School District‘s ELL program. She worked as an ELL teacher at
Olympic and Mt. Baker Middle Schools and then as an instructional coach for the Department of Student
Learning before accepting the teaching position at Auburn Riverside.
Jackie graduated cum laude from Southwestern University and earned her teaching credential from the University of Alaska Southeast.
Jackie has two sons—both graduates of Auburn Riverside High School and Washington State University.
She spends most of her free time managing a dive charter business in Commencement Bay. She holds a
U.S. Coast Guard Captain‘s License, which allows her to operate as boat captain on her 41-foot trawler
yacht. Her boat is also her house, so she is never far from the water.
According to Jackie, ―I am grateful to work with such wonderful teams both in the schoolhouse and on the waterway.‖

Auburn School Board to Honor Terminal Park Elementary ELL Paraeducator
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Irina Carnino, ELL paraeducator at Terminal
Park Elementary School, for her outstanding service on Monday, December 12, at 7 p.m. in the board
room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Irina Carnino helps meet the needs of Auburn students who speak English as their second language.
―My primary role is to help students learn how to read, write, speak and understand English,‖ says Irina.
Developing academic language proficiency can take up to 5-7 years of instruction; therefore, the program
must reach out to students where they‘re at. ―Every student enters the program with different levels of
learning and different life experiences,‖ remarks Irina, ―so we try to find the right instruction and approach for each child.‖
Eight years ago, Irina moved to the United States from Russia. Irina had to learn the English language
quickly, so she easily relates to her students who emigrate from other countries and must learn a new
language and culture. Irina helps ease the transition for students by reaching out to their families. ―I find
that when families understand the educational system it helps their children learn the language more quickly and feel more comfortable at school,‖ says Irina.
Irina has been an ELL paraeducator for seven years and also works as an interpreter for the school
district. She has a bachelor‘s degree and master‘s degree with endorsements in history, social studies and
ELL, and a Washington State teaching certificate. In Russia, Irina taught history and social studies. Her goal is to become an ELL teacher.
―It‘s the whole-team approach I value the most,‖ says Irina. ―We are working together as teachers, specialists and paraeducators to help all kids succeed.‖
Irina lives in Auburn with her husband and never misses an opportunity to try something new. Recently
she and her husband hunted for mushrooms in Mt. Rainier National Park.

drives for Dick Scobee and Pioneer Elementary Schools. The Auburn cafés collected boxes of pencils, paper, notebooks, backpacks and more for students in need.
Additionally, Starbucks and its employees have dedicated countless volunteer hours to the beautification
of its local schools. On October 1, Auburn-area cafés selected Pioneer Elementary as a recipient of a
community service project. Starbucks managers and employees led a volunteer beautification effort to
weed, prune and plant on campus, help construct a gravel exercise trail, and paint classroom doors and
walkways.
According to Pioneer‘s Principal Debra Gary, ―Starbucks went above and beyond…we had great results.‖
Auburn School District would like to specifically thank Starbucks District Manager Matt Robinson and the following Auburn-area store managers:

Auburn School Board Approves Critical Replacement Levy and Auburn High Modernization and Reconstruction Bond Packages
The Auburn School Board approved an Educational Programs and Operations Replacement Levy package
and Auburn High School Modernization and Reconstruction Bond package at its November 28 business
meeting. The election will be held February 14, 2011.
The four-year replacement levy is essential to maintain current educational programs and services for all
children including small class size, instructional programs, special education, athletics and activities,
transportation, and maintenance and custodial services. This replacement levy is not a new tax. It replaces the expiring 2008 levy and is required to maintain current instructional programs and services.
The modernization and reconstruction bond will fund critical improvements at Auburn High School while
keeping school taxes level. The aging building is in disrepair and is no longer cost-effective to operate and
maintain. It fails to meet many of the school district‘s facility standards. The modernized and reconstructed Auburn High School will:
be built at its current location in phases so students can safely remain on campus during the
project
improve heating, cooling and ventilation
include seismic upgrades
have a new front entry on East Main Street
be under one roof with two points of entry
increase student safety
have off-street bus loading areas
provide new classrooms and building technology
increase on-site parking from 300 to 600 stalls
include a large student commons and new synthetic turf baseball and softball fields
improve access for the disabled
include large parking lot adjacent to PAC, pool and main gym directly across from Auburn Memorial Stadium
The combined passage of Proposition 1 Educational Programs and Operations Replacement Levy and
Proposition 2 Auburn High School Modernization and Reconstruction Bond will result in level school taxes for the average homeowner in Auburn.

Auburn Riverside High School Students Compete at 24-Hour Game Creation Contest
Eight Auburn Riverside High School (ARHS) students joined brainpower to develop an innovative video game in one day during HACK, a 24-hour game creation contest sponsored by StudentRND.
Over 60 high school and college students formed 7 teams to build cool and innovative games. The ARHS
team created a video game centered on zombies. Most zombie-themed video games on the market focus
on you, as a human, fighting the hordes of zombies. So the team decided to create a game where you are
a zombie fighting humans.
The video game boasted three levels of game play all built within a 3-D environment. The first level was a
maze that you had to escape in 60 seconds; the second level was a car chase where you had to avoid
obstacles; and because of a major computer crash the third and final level never reached full implementation.
The ARHS team consisted of three audio designers, two artists and two programmers. During the grueling
24 hours, the team faced server crashes, sleep deprivation and strict time limits, yet completed the project and presented to a panel of judges.
StudentRND inspires students to learn more about science and technology by offering hands-on opportunities for students to explore, learn and create.

Auburn School District Announces the 2011-2012 Classified School Employees of the Year
Auburn School District has selected the 2011-12 Classified School Employees of the Year:
Bernie Botz, Washington Elementary School lead custodian
Toni Dudley, Auburn Riverside High School computer lab III specialist and building technology
coordinator Mary Shabel, Auburn Riverside High School office manager
The Auburn School Board will recognize Botz, Dudley and Shabel on Monday, February 27, at 7 p.m. in the
board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building. The trio also will be entered into the ESD
regional competition. Each region will select a winner to move on to the state-level competition. The state
winner will be declared the 2012 Washington State Classified School Employee of the Year.
Bernie Botz: Washington Elementary’s Renaissance Man
Bernie Botz was nominated by Washington Elementary School principal Pauline Thomas and is in his 21st year as Washington‘s daytime lead custodian.
Bernie manages the school‘s janitorial duties, from sprucing up the grounds to cleaning classrooms to
stocking the workroom. Teachers count on Bernie for just about anything. Mrs. Hohnstein-Combs recalls
when one of her student‘s lost a tooth: ―I called Bernie at home and he made a special trip back to the
school to look for the tooth. He even called me to report that it had been found and was put in a bag for the student on my desk.‖
Bernie also advises the student-led Green Team and recycling program. Last year Washington Elementary
was named one of the first Washington State Certified Green Schools for reducing its solid waste by over
50 percent.
Bernie‘s strong work ethic permeates the schoolhouse. ―Bernie is a great role model and positively
interacts with the students every day,‖ says Principal Thomas. Bernie attributes his professional success to
practicing patience. ―You have to have patience to be good at your job,‖ remarks Bernie. ―Kids are always
learning and will make mistakes, but as long as you have patience you can help them grow and learn from their mistakes.‖
Bernie has participated on the district‘s interview team for administrators. He is an assistant supervisor for
custodial equipment training classes, the site leader for the school‘s Rapid Responder Emergency Preparedness Team, and a member of the Coordinated School Health Team.
He has been a PTA Reflections Art Judge, a Cub/Boy Scout Leader, a Comcast work day leader and

Bernie is a University of Washington graduate with a bachelor‘s degree in art. He sang for the UW Jazz
Choir and Seattle All Men‘s Choir. Bernie also oil paints and writes poetry. His favorite painting is Monet‘s
On the Bank of the Seine, which he painted and gifted to his youngest sister. Bernie has written dozens of
poems for families who have struggled with difficulties in pregnancy and childbirth. Bernie‘s epileptic condition, which developed when he was 15 months old, has helped him relate to others and respect life.
Bernie lives in Auburn with his wife, a first grade teacher at Lakeland Hills Elementary. Bernie‘s son is
pursuing a law degree at the University of Washington and his daughter is a senior at Seattle Pacific
University.
Toni Dudley: Auburn Riverside’s Team Player
Toni Dudley was nominated by Auburn Riverside High School principal Dave Halford. Toni is in her 17th year at Auburn Riverside and currently serves as the Ravens‘ go-to technology guru.
Whether assisting teachers with computer questions, entering work orders or tracking inventory, Toni is
the primary liaison between the schoolhouse and the district‘s IT department. Like technology, Toni‘s
technical skills grow and change with the times. When Toni first started at Auburn Riverside, students
used floppy disks and there was no such thing as an ―S‖ drive. Today she manages the latest technology
and recently redeveloped the school‘s website. Since the launch of the new website, traffic has increased
significantly and people have viewed the site from 60 different countries.
Toni‘s can-do attitude is admired by students and staff alike. ―I like to work alongside people,‖ says Toni.
―It‘s important to jump in and complete tasks together.‖ According to Principal Halford, ―Toni is always
willing to take on new challenges. She is a team player who strives to do her best to make Auburn
Riverside be the best it can be. Since the school first opened, Toni has had numerous roles and left a
positive memorable impression wherever she worked. Toni is a one-of-a-kind employee.‖
Toni is a member of the School Improvement Team and the LAP testing coordinator for MAPs. She also
was the Ravens‘ cheer coach for 13 years. Toni attends technology classes and is always learning new ideas to apply in her position.
Outside of the schoolhouse, Toni volunteers with the Buckley Eagles where she teaches members how to
access the Internet and check their e-mail or facebook pages. She also has volunteered for Toys for Tots,
Auburn Food Bank, Veterans Memorial Fund, Auburn Riverside‘s cheerleading scholarship committee, and school supply drives.
Prior to working for the district, Toni managed a $15 million women‘s clothing division at the Bon Marche.
She decided to leave her position to spend more time with her two sons, who are both graduates of
Enumclaw High School.
Currently Toni is pursuing three associate‘s degrees in Administration, Business Education Administration and Legal Administration. She also works part-time as a legal assistant.
Mary Shabel: Auburn Riverside’s First Impression
Mary Shabel was nominated by Auburn Riverside High School principal Dave Halford. Mary is in her 17th
year as Auburn Riverside‘s office manager and has dedicated 24 years of service to the district.
Mary oversees the daily operations of the main office—often referred to as ―ground zero.‖ Her duties
include managing payroll, substitutes, office staff, scheduling and more. Mary ensures everything runs
smoothly and does so with a kind word and warm smile. ―I think of our office as a customer service environment, where we treat people how we like to be treated,‖ says Mary.
Mary goes out of her way to welcome students, parents and staff to Auburn Riverside. Every person who
enters the office is greeted as someone special and receives undivided attention. According to Mary, ―It‘s
my desire to make everyone feel valued and to address their concerns in a timely manner.‖ Mary is the centerpiece and leader of an office environment that is extremely efficient, yet very inviting.
Mary has been at Auburn Riverside since the school opened in 1995. According to Principal Halford, ―Ms.
Shabel‘s ability to adapt to different work environments, staff changes, educational trends and diverse
personalities is unsurpassed. Ms. Shabel was on the ground floor of opening a large, comprehensive high
school, and her skills, energy and patience helped establish an efficient foundation that exists today in
every office.‖ Prior to accepting the position at Auburn Riverside, she worked in the front office at Cascade under Ken Seng, Bruce Phillips and Don Lapinski.
Mary graduated from Petersons Business College in Seattle and participates in continuing education
classes at Green River Community College and various AAEOP conferences and workshops. She has volunteered on the AAEOP scholarship, banquet and negotiations committees.
Mary resides in Auburn and enjoys golfing, reading, exercising, movies, and especially time with her family. She has four children and three grandchildren.

Auburn Teachers and Students Receive Classroom Funding
More than 150 teachers in Auburn School District received classroom tools and resources they needed
thanks to a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Through $10 DonorsChoose.org gift cards
distributed at Starbucks stores throughout the county this past fall, community members and the Gates
Foundation funded these classroom projects—ranging from basic school supplies to books to digital technology. Over 20,875 students will benefit from these new educational resources.
―Teachers have one of the most difficult and important jobs in the world. We support teachers so they
have what they need to ensure all students are learning and continue their education beyond high school
so they can find a job to support themselves and their families,‖ said David Bley, director of the Gates Foundation‘s Pacific Northwest work.
Most of the DonorsChoose.org gift cards were applied to projects within the Road Map Project, a civic
initiative aimed at driving major improvements in education results in the low-income communities of
South Seattle and South King County. The Road Map Project‘s goal is to double the number of students in that region who are on track to graduate from college or earn a career credential by 2020.
―I want to thank the people of King County for their generosity to help support teachers in our region,‖
said Mary Jean Ryan, Executive Director of the Community Center for Education Results, the organization
that staffs the Road Map Project. ―These dollars will go to schools in communities where the need is
greatest and help prepare students to compete in an increasingly skilled workforce.‖

The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Debbie Leighton, executive director of human
resources, for her outstanding service on Monday, February 27, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James
P. Fugate Administration Building.
Debbie Leighton oversees the district‘s HR operations, which include hiring, applicant testing, substitute
placement, state reporting, budgeting, staffing, investigations, discipline and bargaining. The work day is
never quite long enough for all the responsibilities; yet, Debbie motivates her team and gets the work
done.
―Some days are stressful,‖ says Debbie, ―but I love my job. I am a people person and I want our staff
members to be happy and know they can get their questions answered.‖ Debbie helps employees find
resources that will help them professionally and personally, from certification requirements to financial
assistance. ―Hiring quality people is important, but it‘s just as important to take care of our employees
after the hiring process is over,‖ remarks Debbie.
Debbie has committed 33 years to the district and attributes her growth to setting goals, working hard
and listening to her mentors. Debbie began her career typing course catalogs and parent newsletters while
she was still a student at Auburn High School. Early on she set a goal to become the superintendent‘s
secretary. ―Once I met that goal, it gave me the opportunity to dream bigger and set new goals,‖ says
Debbie. Debbie eventually was promoted to supervisor of personnel, then coordinator of human resources, followed by director of human resources, and finally executive director of human resources.

Auburn School Board to Honor 2011-12 Classified School Employees of the Year
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Bernie Botz, Toni Dudley and Mary Shabel for
being selected the 2011-12 Classified School Employees of the Year on Monday, February 27, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Bernie Botz: Washington Elementary School Lead Custodian
Bernie Botz was nominated by Washington Elementary School principal Pauline Thomas and is in his 21st year as Washington‘s daytime lead custodian.
Bernie manages the school‘s janitorial duties, from sprucing up the grounds to cleaning classrooms to
stocking the workroom. Teachers count on Bernie for just about anything. Mrs. Hohnstein-Combs recalls
when one of her student‘s lost a tooth: ―I called Bernie at home and he made a special trip back to the
school to look for the tooth. He even called me to report that it had been found and was put in a bag for
the student on my desk.‖
Bernie also advises the student-led Green Team and recycling program. Last year Washington Elementary
was named one of the first Washington State Certified Green Schools for reducing its solid waste by over 50 percent.
He is an assistant supervisor for
custodial equipment training classes, the site leader for the school‘s Rapid Responder Emergency
Preparedness Team, and a member of the Coordinated School Health Team.
He has been a PTA Reflections Art Judge, a Cub/Boy Scout Leader, a Comcast work day leader and
volunteer, and a member of the Bonnie Olson Scholarship Committee. Bernie also served on the Auburn Good Ol‘ Days Committee and has taught flag etiquette to fifth grade students for over 15 years.
Bernie is a University of Washington graduate with a bachelor‘s degree in art. He sang for the UW Jazz
Choir and Seattle All Men‘s Choir. Bernie also oil paints and writes poetry. His favorite painting is Monet‘s On the Bank of the Seine, which he painted and gifted to his youngest sister. Bernie has written dozens of
poems for families who have struggled with difficulties in pregnancy and childbirth. Bernie‘s epileptic
condition, which developed when he was 15 months old, has helped him relate to others and respect life.
Bernie lives in Auburn with his wife, a first grade teacher at Lakeland Hills Elementary. Bernie‘s son is
pursuing a law degree at the University of Washington and his daughter is a senior at Seattle Pacific University.
Toni Dudley: Auburn Riverside High School Computer Lab III Specialist and Building
Technology Coordinator
Since the launch of the new website, traffic has increased significantly and people have viewed the site from 60 different countries.
Since the school first opened, Toni has had numerous roles and left a positive memorable impression wherever she worked.
She also has volunteered for Toys for Tots,
Auburn Food Bank, Veterans Memorial Fund, Auburn Riverside‘s cheerleading scholarship committee, and
school supply drives.
Prior to working for the district, Toni managed a $15 million women‘s clothing division at the Bon Marche.
She decided to leave her position to spend more time with her two sons, who are both graduates of
Enumclaw High School.
Currently Toni is pursuing three associate‘s degrees in Administration, Business Education Administration
and Legal Administration. She also works part-time as a legal assistant.
Mary Shabel: Auburn Riverside High School Office Manager
The trio also will be entered into the ESD regional competition. Each region will select a winner to move on
to the state-level competition. The state winner will be declared the 2012 Washington State Classified
School Employee of the Year.

Mt. Baker Middle School Students
Win 2012 School of the Future
Design Competition
On February 2, Mt. Baker Middle School
students—James Baldwin, Kylie Covara,
Jordan Harrison, Conner Hofman,
Adrian Hollingsworth, Madalyn Horine,
Josh Leitner and Aislinn Suelflow—won
first place in the 2012 School of the
Future Design Competition sponsored
by the Council of Educational Facility
Planners International (CEFPI). They
will represent the State of Washington
during the regional competition on
February 23 at NAC Architecture in
Seattle.
Mt. Baker's architecture team shows off their award-winning model that captured first place in the
2012 School of the Future Design Competition.
The team designed, planned and created a prototype of a school for the future situated on a building site
that Auburn School District currently owns for a future building project. According to Mt. Baker teacher
Bruce Jacobs, and project adviser, ―The students took off with the project. After a lot of research and
investigation, the students created a final product that was structurally sound and environmentally
conscious. The building blends with the landscape and even utilizes the site‘s wetlands for a ‗Science on
Wheels‘ curriculum.‖ The team was also mentored by Jesse Kingsley, a University of Washington architecture graduate student.
The schoolhouse boasts geothermal electricity, light tubes and skylights, pedestrian sky bridge, performing arts center, two-story gymnasium, green wall and rooftop garden.
The team designed a paved path from the schoolhouse to the wetlands and a footbridge into the wetlands so it can be accessed for hands-on, outdoor science education.
All classrooms follow a curvature along the southeast side of the building to maximize the use of natural
lighting and to provide an unobstructed view of Mt. Rainier.
Additionally, the lower gymnasium, cafeteria, performing arts center and commons are all located
together to increase community engagement.
The team presented their project to a jury for review. Their visual aids included 3-D model of the school,
PowerPoint presentation, display board and site map.
The annual competition, open to middle school students, challenges student teams to design their schools
to enhance learning, conserve resources, be environmentally responsive and engage the surrounding
community. The opportunity allows students to develop math, science, language, communication and
leadership skills through the process of design. The multi-disciplinary solution requires students to follow a
planning process from the concept phase to completion of the project, with thorough documentation.

Deirdre also volunteers on the DIBELS assessment team; prepares classroom materials for teachers; helps
students with special classroom projects; and organizes Hazelwood‘s annual food drive. In fact, Hazelwood has won the annual all-schools food drive three years in a row at the elementary level.

Auburn School Board to Honor Auburn Mountainview High School Business Education Teacher
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Patty Eckelman, Auburn Mountainview High
School (AMHS) business education teacher, for her outstanding service on Monday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Patty Eckelman‘s business education classes at AMHS provide students invaluable technical and leadership
skills. From accounting and business math, to work-based learning and the Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) certification program, students acquire real-world employability skills for life beyond high school.
According to Patty, ―My goal is to give students learning opportunities and skills that prepare them for college, work and other post-secondary opportunities.‖
In fact, this year Auburn Mountainview has been recognized by State Superintendent of Public Instruction
Randy Dorn for having the #1 student pass rate for Microsoft Office Specialist Certification and the fourth
largest number of certifications in Washington State. This semester, the business education lab has moved
to Office 2010 due to Microsoft‘s partnership with OSPI. It is the only computer lab in the district to be running Office 2010.
―This is the only industry-level certification that validates the computer skills needed to get the most out
of Microsoft Office applications,‖ says Patty. ―It is designed for industry, not high school students, so the
certification really grabs your attention on job applications, scholarships and resumes.‖ A number of
Patty‘s students have scored in the high 900s and one student has scored a perfect 1,000. With some of
the best scores in the country, these students may be invited to represent the United States in the 2012
Worldwide Competition on Microsoft Office in Las Vegas next July. Additionally, every year Patty takes students to the Microsoft campus to share with them career and networking opportunities.
Patty stresses professionalism in all her classes and commits herself to lead by example. ―Every day I put
my best foot forward no matter what‘s going on in my life, and I tell my students to do the same.‖ Patty
invites guest speakers such as lawyers, judges and police officers to impart similar messages. Students
also learn the importance of citizenship. This year Patty‘s students donated 172 pairs of jeans to homeless
teens through Aeropostale‘s Teens for Jeans program. Additionally, students donated over $1,000 to aid in the Haiti relief effort.
Patty is in her 21st year of teaching. The daughter of a banker and family and consumer science/business
education teacher, Patty followed in her parents‘ footsteps. She earned a business education degree from
University of Montana and master‘s degree in educational technology through City University. Patty taught
her first year at Liberty Bell High School in Twisp before accepting the business education position at
Auburn Riverside High School. Seven years ago Patty moved to Auburn Mountainview to help open up the
new business education program. Patty is a lifelong learner. She participates in continuing education courses to stay current with new technology.

Auburn School Board to Honor Washington Elementary Fifth Grader as Student of the Month
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Grace Cresswell, a fifth grade student at
Washington Elementary School, for being an outstanding student on Monday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the
board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Grace Cresswell is an outstanding peer model and friend. Grace has shown tremendous academic growth
this year—excelling in math and making steady improvements in reading. At school Grace is the safety
patrol captain and has led the Walk-a-thon fundraiser the past four years. She also volunteers as a peer
model with the intermediate Structured Learning Center (SLC). Mrs. Cairney, Washington‘s SLC teacher,
says, ―Grace makes our students feel welcome during structured inclusion opportunities, but she does so
during non-structured times as well.‖ During recess Grace offers her warm smile and assistance to the
SLC students and does not hesitate to include them with her peer group. She is a role model to all
students and makes Washington a more inclusive community.
Outside of school Grace keeps herself busy. She participates in soccer and plays the piano. She enjoys
spending time at her grandparents‘ cottage, clamming, camping, running with her dad, and helping her
grandma and grandpa with the CRANA Food Project in Olympia. Every three months the trio gathers food
and donates it to local food banks. Additionally, Grace‘s family participates in an annual coat drive for local
churches and Grace and her brother use their own Christmas money to take coffee and donuts to either
the fire department or police station. Grace also handcrafts May Day baskets for all of her ―older‖ neighbors. One of her goals for 2012 is to run a 5K with her dad.

The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Rick Kain, Auburn School District print shop
lead operator, for his outstanding service on Monday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James
P. Fugate Administration Building.
For 37 years—31 of them in the Auburn School District—Rick Kain has copied, cut, folded and bound
millions of pieces of paper into teaching aids, assessments and other educational materials for district
staff. Rick operates both the district and Auburn High School print shops.
As lead operator, Rick processes and schedules all print requests, completes the jobs, and compiles
monthly reports. Every day his goal is to provide high quality educational materials to support student
learning. ―I work hard to complete jobs on time and sometimes more quickly than expected,‖ says Rick.
―My number one daily goal is to provide each staff member the best customer service possible.‖
Rick has anywhere from 3 to 300 jobs scheduled at any given time, from course catalogs to school
newsletters to quizzes. He is adept at breaking down the large volume of work into smaller, more
manageable pieces. According to Rick, ―The work is much easier to accomplish when it‘s prioritized and
organized.‖
In addition to his print shop duties, Rick volunteers on the district‘s Staff Links newsletter committee.
Rick is a 1969 graduate of Auburn High School. Afterwards, he attended Green River and Fort Steilacoom
Community Colleges. Rick also is a veteran of the United States Air Force. Rick first learned how to
operate printing equipment on the job in the Bethel School District before accepting the print shop
position in Auburn.
Rick and his wife, Barbara, live in their Bonney Lake area home that they built themselves in 1978. Rick
has four boys and enjoys sports and giving back to the community.

Co-Teaching Model Increases Student Learning in Auburn School District
Auburn School District‘s co-teaching program for new teachers is unlike any student teaching experience.
During the past two years, the district has partnered with City University to launch a co-teaching pilot
program in Auburn schools. Research shows that the co-teaching model increases student achievement,
whereas the traditional student-teacher model decreases student achievement. According to Debbie
Leighton, executive director of human resources, ―The co-teaching model not only benefits the new teacher, but also positively impacts the core teacher and more importantly student learning.‖
Student teachers typically observe core (classroom) teachers for a period of time and then assume all
teaching responsibilities independently as the core teacher steps away. Conversely, co-teachers and core
teachers work side by side in all aspects of instruction. Essentially, students have two teachers facilitating learning in the classroom. The result is students learn more.
A Closer Look
Mollie Marine is 1 of 14 co-teachers at Dick Scobee Elementary. She will graduate from City University in
June with a degree and teaching credential. She‘ll also have a full year of co-teaching experience before
she ever steps into her own classroom.
As a co-teacher, Ms. Marine partners with the core teacher to plan lessons, deliver instruction and assess
learning. The duo teaches together in the classroom, which lowers the student-to-teacher ratio. This
creates more opportunities to engage students one-on-one, provide intervention and enrichment
activities, and model cooperative learning. The co-teacher receives immediate feedback from the core
teacher while instructing students. According to Ms. Marine, ―I can bounce ideas of my core teacher and
when I have a question about how to teach a concept or what‘s the best way to engage a student, I get
an instant response.‖ Glenn Jenkins, a co-teacher at Dick Scobee in the 2010-11 school year, concurs, ―I
felt like a more effective teacher immediately with the help and support of my core teacher.‖
Beth Raines is a fourth grade teacher at Dick Scobee Elementary. She is in her 23rd year of teaching.
Currently, she serves as the primary liaison between Dick Scobee and City University for the co-teaching pilot program and has been a core teacher for two years.
As a core teacher, Ms. Raines guides co-teachers in all aspects of instruction and models the
responsibilities of a lead teacher. The core teacher also benefits from the partnership. ―Co-teachers bring
new energy into the classroom,‖ says Ms. Raines. ―Guiding new teachers and listening to their fresh new
ideas and perspectives is exciting. Collaborating with co-teachers has made me a better teacher.‖ Ms. Raines has tried new lesson plans, demonstrations and management styles thanks to her co-teachers.
Student Achievement Students have two teachers facilitating learning in the classroom with the co-teaching model. This means:
Small class size
More one-on-one support and small group instruction
More opportunities to differentiate instruction between students More opportunities to monitor student growth
Teachers understand the positive impact of co-teaching as much as students do. Ms. Raines‘ students
were asked what they thought about having two teachers working together in the classroom. Here are a
few of their responses:
Co-teachers teach us different strategies.
They were remarkable and had different personalities like humor, laughter and a little bit of nervousness.
There are two teachers and they can help us faster. If the teacher is working with somebody you can ask the co-teacher.
Teachers are not meant to work in isolation—including teachers just entering the profession. The co-
teaching model emphasizes collaboration, communication and, most importantly, increases in student
learning.

Auburn School Board to Place Critical Auburn High Modernization and Reconstruction Bond on
the November 6, 2012 Ballot
The Auburn School Board will place the Auburn High School Modernization and Reconstruction Bond for $110 million on the ballot for the November 6, 2012 election.
It is the right time for this project. School taxes will stay level if the bond passes in November. Here‘s how:
Auburn School District bond debt for schools is at an all-time low. Previous school bonds have been
paid off so when new ones go into effect the amount homeowners pay each year remains level. The district has refinanced previous bonds saving $3 million to taxpayers.
Money from the bond sale, added to $10 million from the school district‘s capital projects fund, will pay for
the project. Additionally, the state of Washington will provide $25 million matching funds for reconstruction.
The project will also:
Cost less now with construction prices at a record low—delaying the project will cost $3 million
more annually
Create jobs within our community Save $250,000 annually in energy bills
Auburn High School is in disrepair and is no longer cost-effective to operate and maintain. Critical repairs include:
leaking roofs
poor air quality and ventilation
outdated classrooms and labs
83 entrances onto Auburn High
deficient seismic structural support
outdated surveillance and intrusion detection systems
The Auburn School Board is committed to eliminate inadequacies at Auburn High School and improve the
learning environment for all of our students.

Auburn School Board to Honor Rainier Middle School Eighth Grader as Student of the Month
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Christian Rotter, an eighth grade student at
Rainier Middle School, for being an outstanding student on Tuesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. in the board room
at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Christian balances dogged determination with good sense in a manner far beyond his years. In May, Ms.
Allison‘s first period WEB leaders and Ms. Astle‘s first period Honors Language Arts class competed to
bring in the most money for the Pennies for Patients drive. As donation dollars increased, the competition
turned fierce. This included covert ops and counting coup. Even when the WEB class won the Pennies for
Patients drive by bringing in the greatest dollar amount, Christian‘s team did not gloat or boast. Instead,
under Christian‘s persistent leadership, which is grounded in always doing the right thing, the WEB class
soothed hurt feelings by creating a video project for the Honors Language Arts class. According to Ms.
Astle, ―Christian is a positive student leader. He is destined to do things greater than we can envision.‖
As a WEB leader, Christian not only helps raise funds for charitable causes, but also mentors sixth grade
students throughout the school year. He assists with the planning and delivery of lessons specially
designed for new sixth graders. He is caring and competent, and shadows several students to help them make it to and from class on time.
Christian‘s competitiveness affects his academic and athletic goals. In Futsal—five-a-side indoor soccer—
he is fast and quick, and has amazing ball-handling skills. Recently Christian broke the district track record
in the mile with a time of 4:47. He always shakes the hands of his competitors before or after races and is
a leader on the track team. His stamina, speed and sportsmanship also pay off in class. In geometry he helps other students stay on track and guides them through difficult lessons.

Auburn School Board to Honor Lake View Fourth Grade Teacher Gina Greco
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Gina Greco, fourth grade teacher at Lake View
Elementary School, for her outstanding service on Tuesday, May 29, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Gina Greco‘s fourth grade classroom at Lake View Elementary School is a learning oasis. Students can
bring pillows for their chairs and other comforts from home. ―I treat my classroom like an extension of my
family,‖ says Gina. ―I want all my students to feel comfortable in class so they are ready to learn.‖
Eleven years ago Gina began helping Lake View students succeed in the classroom and beyond. Gina and
her fellow fourth grade teachers constantly review data, ask questions and make instructional decisions in
order to increase student achievement. This year Gina participated in the Auburn Teacher Leadership
Academy (ATLA). Currently she serves as the Lake View science chair and is a principal intern at the
school. Over the years Gina has participated on the district‘s childhood fitness and nutrition ad-hoc subcommittee, facilitated an after-school cooking club, and served as the PTA teacher representative.
Every day Gina models hard work and determination to her students. In 1999 Gina was diagnosed with
Crohn‘s disease, a life-changing and, at times, painful autoimmune disorder. According to Gina, ―Crohn‘s
taught me perspective…how to overcome challenges and how to see the positive in every situation.‖
Gina‘s can-do attitude permeates her teaching. No matter the task, Gina always finds a way to get the job
done. In 2006 and 2011 Gina was recognized by students and parents as the Lake View PTA Outstanding Educator of the Year.
Gina volunteers with the Crohn‘s and Colitis Foundation and recently spoke at their annual conference.
Additionally, Gina fund raises to help send children to Camp Oasis, a summer camp for children with
Crohn‘s disease.
On May 15, Gina earned a master‘s in educational administration from Grand Canyon University. She holds a bachelor‘s degree in early childhood education.
Gina, her husband and three-year-old son live in Lake Tapps. Outside of teaching, Gina enjoys baking and
cooking and family dinners with her mom and siblings. Her Nana‘s famous Easter bread and other Italian
dishes are inspired by her Italian roots. In fact, both Gina and her husband‘s families are from the same
small village in Italy.

Auburn School District Announces 2011-12 Teachers of the Year
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize the 2011-12 Teachers of the Year on Monday,
June 11, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James P. Fugate Administration Building.
One elementary school teacher, one middle school teacher and two high school teachers were selected at
the district level—Linda Campbell, Kanika Watkins-Gatlin, Jackie De Haven and Fred Donaldson. All four
outstanding teachers will move on to the regional competition. One teacher from each region will move on to the state competition. The state winner will move on to the 2013 national competition.
Linda Campbell
Pioneer Elementary School TOSA/Reading Specialist
Linda Campbell is the Auburn School District 2011-12 elementary school level outstanding teacher of the
year. Ms. Campbell‘s leadership and innovation produce academic gains for her students and professional growth among her colleagues.
Ms. Campbell develops targeted math instruction for students of all ability levels and across grade levels
at Pioneer. Recently Ms. Campbell developed and implemented a professional development program to
guide teachers in enhancing students‘ math skills. She collaborated with fellow teachers to prepare each
lesson in a math unit and even provided individual meeting demonstrations for teachers who were having
difficulty adapting the lessons to their student needs. Additionally, Ms. Campbell developed a mock
assessment and data collection model for district use.
Outside of the school day, Ms. Campbell provides extended learning opportunities for students before and
after school. She also participates on the Auburn Teacher Leadership Academy and the District‘s Common
Core State Standards Transition Committee. Ms. Campbell is both passionate about motivating her
students and delivering excellent instruction. According to Ms. Campbell, ―I teach with purpose,‖ says Ms.
Campbell. ―I want to do whatever I can to help kids succeed. I love my work.‖ In fact, Ms. Campbell
frequently reminds herself to slow down on her morning commute to Pioneer. ―I have to be careful not to speed on the way to school because I‘m so excited to get there,‖ says Ms. Campbell.
Ms. Campbell recently transitioned back into public education after teaching AP Social Studies and
elementary education in Seattle Christian Schools for over 10 years. She has pursued extensive
professional development opportunities including earning endorsements in English Language Arts 4-12
and Humanities Mid Level. ―I‘ve taught a range of grade levels and content areas, but there is always more to learn,‖ says Ms. Campbell. ―I am educating myself to grow and learn alongside our students.‖
Ms. Campbell‘s passion for teaching and learning is contagious. According to Pioneer Elementary Principal
Debra Gary, ―Ms. Campbell is dedicated to each student‘s advancement and well being...while we are
seeing improvement on state assessments, we also are witnessing an increased desire to learn and
approach math problem solving by our students. Throughout the school students talk about the strategies
they are using and how it helps them to solve math problems. Teachers also have concrete evidence that
they can help struggling students reach math benchmarks. This has been a tremendous confidence boost for students and staff.‖
Kanika Watkins-Gatlin
Cascade Middle School Language Arts Teacher
Kanika Watkins-Gatlin is the Auburn School District 2011-12 middle school level outstanding teacher of
the year. Ms. Watkins-Gatlin‘s mission is to reach all students that enter her classroom, whether they are advanced, at grade level or struggling. She believes all students can learn.
In the classroom, Ms. Watkins-Gatlin exposes students to a variety of literacy strategies and activities in
order to engage all student learners. According to Cascade Principal Isaiah Johnson, ―The work and
conversation in Ms. Watkins-Gatlin‘s classroom is personally engaging and meaningful. Students are actively thinking, analyzing, exploring and discussing topics in the classroom.‖
One of Ms. Watkins-Gatlin‘s most impressive traits is her ability to create a positive classroom
environment. Her facilitative approach to learning increases students‘ comprehension and vocabulary
skills, promotes student depth of understanding, and challenges students to explore the written word deeper.
Ms. Watkins-Gatlin‘s comes from a family with generations of educators. According to Ms. Watkins-Gatlin,
―My mother, father, aunts and grandmother are all teachers and administrators, and I feel their words of
wisdom in me, guiding my path. It sounds cliché but I never imagined that I would ever be recognized for something that I love to do and take great pride in.‖
Last year Ms. Watkins-Gatlin was a graduate of the Auburn Teacher Leadership Academy (ATLA).
Additionally, she is Cascade‘s Language Arts content team leader and a participant on the Washington
State Leadership Academy. Ms. Watkins-Gatlin also organizes Cascade‘s PRIDE awards, which recognize
students who model perseverance, respect, integrity, discipline and excellence.
―Being a teacher is one of the most intrinsically rewarding jobs, and that alone is a true reason why those who teach can, do and will remain in this profession,‖ says Ms. Watkins-Gatlin.
Jackie De Haven
Auburn Riverside High School ELL Teacher
Jackie De Haven is the Auburn School District 2011-12 high school level outstanding co-teacher of the
year. Ms. De Haven is committed to serving the needs of Auburn students who speak English as their second language.
Ms. De Haven encourages collaboration in the classroom to maximize learning. Students set goals, discuss
concepts and reflect on their work together. Ms. De Haven reserves time for one-on-one mentoring and instruction, and uses assessment data to drive daily instruction.
Ms. De Haven‘s primary responsibility is to ensure each student receives the necessary support and
instruction to acquire English language skills so they can be successful in their mainstream classes.
Students are instructed in reading, writing, oral and acquisition skills. According to Jackie, ―Teaching our students English allows them access to school culture and learning.‖
Last school year Jackie helped 35 percent of her ELL students transition out of the program—one of the
highest exit rates in the district. Jackie motivates her students by combining textbook assignments with
interactive classroom activities such as word art, oralpresentations, sing-a-longs and photo bingo.
Ms. De Haven teams with other language arts teachers to reflect on their teaching practices, discuss best
practices, and examine research and literature to expand their own knowledge. Additionally, Ms. De Haven
is the district‘s Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) coach at the secondary level and worked
as an instructional coach for the Department of Student Learning before accepting the teaching position at Auburn Riverside.
―All students can learn,‖ says Ms. De Haven. ―And I believe teachers make the difference.‖
Fred Donaldson
Auburn School District Automotive Technology Teacher
Fred Donaldson is the Auburn School District 2011-12 high school level outstanding co-teacher of the year. Mr. Donaldson prepares students for graduation and careers in the automotive industry.
Mr. Donaldson is the popular auto shop and small gas engines teacher for all four high schools in the
Auburn School District. He identifies the learning needs of each individual student and tailors instruction to
fit their learning needs. Mr. Donaldson relates to students and possesses instructional flexibility, developing lessons and running the shop to match the abilities of his students.
As a Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructor, Mr. Donaldson takes to heart the duty to prepare
his students for the real world of work. He runs his auto shop like a small business, and expects his
students to work and behave in a professional manner. Many of Mr. Donaldson‘s graduates populate local
auto dealerships and auto mechanic businesses, making a positive impact in the business community.
According to Mr. Donaldson, ―I take my job seriously…to prepare students for a successful future beyond
high school.‖ Mr. Donaldson leads the district‘s advisory board for automotive education, which is
comprised of master mechanics and experts in the local automotive industry. He is a Nationally Certified
Master Trainer by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and evaluates
automotive programs on high school and college campuses across the nation. The Office of
Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) frequently requests Mr. Donaldson to teach other professionals
in his field.
The Auburn School District automotive program was the second in Washington State to earn Automotive
Service Excellence (ASE) NATEF master certification. This certification indicates students receive industry-
level training. The program is also an Auto YES training program, which is a partnership between the school program and local dealerships and independents to provide students with on-the-job training.
Additionally, Mr. Donaldson secures automobiles, tools, small gas engines and cash through various grant
programs. Recently, the automotive technology program was awarded 24 new Kohler engines for the small gas engine classes. These items are excellent, real-world training aids for students.
―I‘m committed to provide students multiple pathways to graduation,‖ says Mr. Donaldson. ―We are here to see all students be successful.‖

Auburn School District to Honor Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce with Community
Recognition Award
On May 18, Auburn School District will honor the Auburn Area
Chamber of Commerce at the Washington Association of
School Administrators (WASA) Community Recognition Awards
luncheon for their contributions to education.
Four years ago the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce Board
of Directors formed an Education Subcommittee in order to
improve business-oriented educational opportunities for local
schools, enhance business access to workforce-ready
employees, and provide educational opportunities for the Chamber‘s business members.
In partnership with Auburn, Enumclaw and Kent School
Districts, the Chamber sponsors the Annual High School
Career Conference. Now in its 13th year, the event matches over 300 area high school juniors and seniors
with 50 regional employers for a day of real and practice job interviews and career counseling. Students
explore career and post-secondary opportunities and practice live interview skills with companies like
Auburn Regional Medical Center, IKEA and Waste Management. Local business leaders share expert advice
on financial planning, resume building, dressing for success, and the importance of staying in school.
The Chamber also co-sponsors the Annual Middle School Career Conference for over 800 Auburn middle
school students. The event encourages 8th grade students to stay engaged in school, plan appropriate
high school courses of study, graduate from high school on time, and set goals for successes beyond high
school. Students meet with representatives from local businesses, high school programs, community and
technical colleges, four-year universities and the College-Success Foundation. Following the career conference students begin planning their high school courses of study with high school career counselors.
The Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce supports Auburn Schools through their endorsement of
educational program levies and construction bonds. Additionally, the Chamber endorses legislative candidates and school board candidates who support education for all students.
The Chamber also provides leadership training for district staff through their yearlong Leadership Institute
of South Puget Sound. The Leadership Institute has led to a number of award-winning programs including
CIS Auburn‘s Annual Clothes 4 Kids community-wide clothing drive. This massive donation event provides new and gently used clothing and shoes to students with need in the Auburn School District.
Each year, WASA Metro holds a luncheon and an awards ceremony to honor community leaders. The award is presented to a community member or group in recognition of contributions to education.

Auburn School District Refinances Bonds—Taxpayers Save
Auburn School District refinanced a portion of its outstanding bonds in order to take advantage of lower
interest rates. The recent refinancing will save the district‘s taxpayers a total of $1,429,020 during the
next 10 years. These savings go directly to taxpayers through reduced tax levies and are not available for District expenses. The savings equates to 14.39% of the present value of the bonds.
The Auburn School Board accomplished these savings by approving the issuance of $9,290,000 in
refunding bonds at the school board meeting held on March 26, 2012.
The District has been monitoring bond market conditions over the past year and recent low interest rates
allowed the District to exceed its savings target. Interest rates averaged 2.13% on the new bonds compared to 4.97% on the old debt.

The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize Debbie Olson, Pioneer Elementary School
kitchen manager, for her outstanding service on Monday, June 11, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the
James P. Fugate Administration Building.
Pioneer Elementary kitchen manager Debbie Olson manages one of the busiest school kitchens in the
district. In fact, Pioneer Elementary serves over 340 breakfasts, 450 lunches, and 480 fresh fruit and
vegetable snacks every day. ―We go through more food than our middle schools,‖ says Debbie. The
kitchen welcomes 200 cases of food a week, including deliveries of organic fruits and vegetables from local
farmers. According to Debbie, ―We try to serve as much fresh, local produce as we can through farm-to-
school partnerships.‖ These partnerships bring healthy food from local farms to school children, teach students about where food comes from, encourage healthy eating habits, and support the local economy.
Debbie not only ensures the smooth daily operations of the school‘s breakfast and lunch programs, but
she also coordinates food orders, deliveries and menus; manages kitchen staff; and oversees the USDA-
sponsored fresh fruit and vegetable snack program. Currently, only two other elementary schools in the
district operate the USDA fresh fruit and vegetable program. Each day students try healthy afternoon
snacks such as mango, pomegranate or sweet potatoes. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, Debbie and her
kitchen staff prepared a vertical tricolor of peas, jicama and red peppers to represent the flag of Mexico. ―Kids eat the variety and love it,‖ says Debbie.
Debbie began her career in Pioneer‘s kitchen 24 years ago. For a few years she split her shift between
Chinook and Pioneer. Debbie holds a Child Nutrition Certification and regularly attends professional development courses on safety and sanitation, whole foods cooking, and more.
Debbie impacts the students of Pioneer beyond the kitchen. She encourages healthy eating habits, good
manners and kindness. ―I like to listen to the students and be a positive adult role model,‖ says Debbie.
Debbie lives in Auburn with her husband and has 2 children and 6 grandchildren. On occasion Debbie
feeds her dinner guests recipes from the school kitchen. The oven roasted potatoes are a big hit at school and at home.

Auburn School Board to Honor 2011-12 Teachers of the Year
The Auburn School District Board of Directors will recognize the 2011-12 Teachers of the Year on Monday,
June 11, at 7 p.m. in the board room at the James P.
Donaldson, ―I take my job seriously…to prepare students for a successful future beyond
high school.‖
Mr. Donaldson leads the district‘s advisory board for automotive education, which is comprised of master
mechanics and experts in the local automotive industry. He is a Nationally Certified Master Trainer by the
National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) and evaluates automotive programs on
high school and college campuses across the nation. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction
(OSPI) frequently requests Mr. Donaldson to teach other professionals in his field.
Donaldson. ―We are here to see all students be successful.‖

the National Civic League based on the region‘s ambitious plan to ensure that more children are reading at grade level by the end of third grade.
Chosen from a field of more than 100 entries, Seattle and South King County‘s plan was submitted by a
community coalition that included the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Puget Sound Educational Service
District, OneAmerica, the League of Education Voters, the City of Seattle Office of Education, United Way
of King County, the South King Council of Human Services, local libraries and city governments. The community was 1 of 14 awardees selected from 32 finalists.
―We are thrilled to win the All-America City Award. It is an honor to have our region‘s ambitious plan for

AUGUST 2012:

Auburn School District to Launch New User-Friendly Websites
Auburn School District is pleased to announce the launch of new easy-to-use websites for all 22 schools
and the district office. The websites will go live on August 22.
The new online presence will improve communication between schools and families. Here are some of the exciting new features:
Real-time calendars for each school and district office
A streamlined uniform layout across all websites so information is easy to find
Critical information is in the same location on all websites—whether looking for the lunch menu,
school events, teacher web pages, or emergency closures
Information is timely and relevant with frequent updates Scrolling announcements, headlines, and upcoming events featured on each school‘s home page
The decision to update the district‘s websites was made more than a year ago and was based on feedback
from staff and community members who felt the existing websites were out-of-date, and difficult to
navigate. Work on the project began in the winter of 2011. According to IT Director Neil Vien, ―With the
launch in August comes a brand-new website that is easier to operate. Our new website provides for
consistent flow and uniformity while allowing each school the ability to remain unique.‖
Critical messages such as emergency snow closures, late starts and early dismissals will be promptly
posted across all school sites, not just the district home page. All school sites will boast a staff directory so
that parents and students can easily find teacher contact information. Additionally, at the top of all
websites is a horizontal menu named the ‗My Start‘ bar. The ‗District‘ button will always bring you back to
the main district site and school drop-down menus will take you to a specific school‘s website.
―Our goal is to provide modern, relevant websites that allow students, parents, staff and community
residents the opportunity to learn about and connect with Auburn School District,‖ says Mike Newman,
Deputy Superintendent. The new websites will keep the public informed and connected to our schools
through up-to-date news, streaming video and podcasting, surveys, photo galleries and more.
The District will continue to add new content and enhance the functionality of the website throughout the
2012-13 school year. If you have any feedback or questions, please contact
