As the priest looked around the aircraft, it became obvious that many of the passengers were becoming apprehensive. Later the voice on the intercom said, "We are sorry that we are unable to serve the meal at this time. The turbulence is still ahead of us." And then the storm broke. The ominous cracks of thunder could be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightning lit up the darkening skies, and within moments that great plane was like a cork tossed around on a celestial ocean. One moment the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air; the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash. The priest confessed that he shared the discomfort and fear of those around him. He said, "As I looked around the plane, I could see that nearly all the passengers were upset and alarmed. Some were praying. The future seemed ominous and many were wondering if they would make it through the storm." "Then, I suddenly saw a little girl. Apparently the storm meant nothing to her. She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat; she was reading a book and everything within her small world was calm and orderly. Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would read again;then she would straighten her legs, but worry and fear were not in her world.” "When the plane was being buffeted by the terrible storm, when it lurched this way and that, as it rose and fell with frightening severity, when all the adults were scared half to death, that marvelous child was completely composed and unafraid." The priest could hardly believe his eyes. It was not surprising that when the plane finally reached its destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, our priest lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such a long time. Having commented about the storm and the behavior of the plane, he asked why she had not been afraid. The child replied, "Cause my Daddy's the pilot, and he's taking me home." …… There are many kinds of storms that buffet us. Physical, mental, financial, domestic, and many other storms can easily and quickly darken our skies and throw our plane into apparently uncontrollable movement. We have all known such times, and let us be honest and confess, it is much easier to be at rest when our feet are on the ground than when we are being tossed about a darkened sky. TRUST GOD

A priest had been on a long flight between church conferences. The first warning of the approaching problems came when the sign on the airplane flashed on: Fasten Your Seat Belts. Then, after a while,

a calm voice said, "We shall not be serving the beverages at this time as we are expecting a little turbulence. Please be sure your seat belt is fastened."

As the priest looked around the aircraft, it became obvious that many of the passengers were becoming apprehensive. Later the voice on the intercom said, "We are sorry that we are unable to serve the meal

at this time. The turbulence is still ahead of us."

And then the storm broke.

The ominous cracks of thunder could be heard even above the roar of the engines. Lightning lit up the darkening skies, and within moments that great plane was like a cork tossed around on a celestial ocean. One moment

the airplane was lifted on terrific currents of air; the next, it dropped as if it were about to crash. The priest confessed that he shared the discomfort and fear of those around him. He said, "As I looked around the plane, I could see that nearly all the passengers were upset and alarmed. Some were praying. The future

seemed ominous and many were wondering if they would make it through the storm."

"Then, I suddenly saw a little girl. Apparently the storm meant nothing to her. She had tucked her feet beneath her as she sat on her seat; she was reading a book and everything within her small world was calm and orderly.

Sometimes she closed her eyes, then she would read again;then she would straighten her legs, but worry and fear were not in her world.”

"When the plane was being buffeted by the terrible storm, when it lurched this way and that, as it rose and fell

with frightening severity, when all the adults were scared half to death, that marvelous child was completely composed and unafraid."

The priest could hardly believe his eyes. It was not surprising that when the plane finally reached its

destination and all the passengers were hurrying to disembark, our priest lingered to speak to the girl whom he had watched for such a long time.

Having commented about the storm and the behavior of the plane, he asked why she had not been afraid.

The child replied, "Cause my Daddy's the pilot, and he's taking me home."……

There are many kinds of storms that buffet us. Physical, mental, financial, domestic, and many other storms can easily and quickly darken our skies and throw our plane into apparently uncontrollable movement. We have all known such times, and let us be honest and confess, it is much easier to be at rest when our feet are on the

ground than when we are being tossed about a darkened sky.

Let us remember: Our Father is the Pilot. He is in control and taking us home. Don't worry! Trust our pilot.

PASTOR’S MESSAGE

This Tuesday, Pope Francis will land in the United States and visit Philadelphia, Washington, D.C. and New York. It seems clear from his statements concerning his intentions that he is interested in delivering a message of mercy, hope and joy. He hopes to share the inner peace that comes from a relationship with Jesus Christ and to invite believer and non-believer to work together on behalf of the poor and marginalized. He travels in the tradition of Saint John Paul II the great missionary Pope of the Twentieth Century and his concerns mirror many of his predecessor’s: world peace, justice and human rights, moral and ethical uprightness and commitment, political freedom and solidarity with all humankind and all of creation. Pope Francis will make a special plea that Roman Catholicism, as one of the world's great faiths, model mercy, hospitality and the loving welcome of an ever-caring and forgiving God. He will challenge Catholics to first and always speak words of compassion and mercy before we speak of anything else. A good example of this truth is the way that Jesus greeted and converted Zacchaeus, the tax collector. He did not first tell him to change his sinful life but instead invited himself to dinner with Zacchaeus. "I see in you potential to be a just man. I am going to have dinner tonight with you." This unconditional love that he received led Zacchaeus to renounce his past sins and change his life and business practices. I believe that Pope Francis wants us to place things in their proper order: first is the experience of love and mercy, then the conversion.

Another emphasis of Pope Francis will undoubtedly be the dangers of a capitalistic system that operates without a conscience. The profit motivation that drives capitalism has always needed the presence of laws to protect from excesses. The Christian hope as regards any economic system is that all will have a place and that to some degree all will benefit from the way that we organize our economic affairs. In the Christian worldview the lives and the well-being of all members of the society are important. A simple way of putting this is that any economy exists for human beings, and not for itself. There is also a potential for conflict between the Christian vision of the importance of community, of the social contract and the social fabric and that which is often portrayed as a rugged and uncompromising American individualism. Saint John Paul II used the term "solidarity" to describe the goal of human community. We are to foster a real human solidarity where all can live with dignity and opportunity. Because we are "one in Christ" our affairs must strive to forge a unity of mutual respect and reverence. Pope Francis will be reminding us of this most important truth.

Much has been made of the fact that Pope Francis is the first Pope from Latin America. I believe that there is truth in that observation, however, I believe he also has an inclusive worldview that especially reverences the parts of the world that might not be economically or politically very significant. He is no more limited in perspective as an Argentine than Pope Benedict was by being a German or Saint John Paul II was being a Pole. He is,

also, well aware that the Roman Catholic Church has shifted dramatically in it demographics. Today 70% of the world's Catholics live in the Southern Hemisphere while only 30% live in Europe and North America. Sensitivity to this fact means that sometimes Pope Francis will appear less concerned with the 30%, (what we think, our take on world events etc.), than we would like. I am convinced; however, that his genuine love and compassion for all people especially those who are suffering knows no geographical boundaries. He is a Pope of Mercy for all peoples. Thus he will visit prisoners, statesmen and stateswomen, inner-city schoolchildren, seminarians, bishops, and countless other Catholic people and all people of good will.

What originally has brought Pope Francis to our country and especially to Philadelphia is the World Conference on the Family. He is incredibly concerned about the state of the family, or better, of all families, their well-being and betterment. The institution of the family is the basic building block of social life so its health and its challenges demand our attention and commitment. I am sure that many new ideas will emerge from this Conference that will help our church to more effectively use the gifts and strengths of families as we seek to be of assistance to them in their need. What will happen in Washington D.C. with his meetings there and with his addressing the United Nations in New York, only a prophet can foresee. What will be true, however, is that an incredibly charismatic and fascinating Vicar of Christ will bless our country with a vision of hope, mercy and community that will resonate with the hearts of millions. Although he has been embraced enthusiastically everywhere because of his warmth and approachability, his humility and servant leadership will remain his most important gift to us.

OUR PILGRIMHOLY FATHER

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MULTICULTURAL MINISTRY

Tessie O'Dea, Director of the Family Ministry and I, Director of the International Ministry are on our way to the World Encounter of Families to be held in Philadelphia this fall. Our expectations are high and we hope to return with a lot of good ideas to share with all of you in our Saint Joan of Arc Parish.

Between the two of us, we have had the privilege of bringing ten children into the world, now all happy adults. Forming our children in virtue has been a key factor that has contributed to their happiness in their adult lives.

Today, more than ever, parents feel the need to guide their children in the formation of their character and to help them develop their personality such that they will be able to discern that which is true and good from that which is false and evil. A family is not a conglomerate of individuals, a “boarding house” where people sleep, eat and get their clothing washed. It is a community of persons learning from each other, bound together in a relationship of love. In a home both parents and children must be constantly looking for the welfare of each other. Service is an essential virtue that fosters caring persons and not isolated individuals that only think of their needs disregarding others. In the family we grow in generosity which is essential to a life of service.

The pleasure of the senses is the new yardstick for measuring the quality of life, thus, justifying the greatest moral aberrations and, inevitably, leading to a progressive blurring of the true concept of person, of freedom, and of human dignity.

For Christian parents, the challenges we face today are daunting and intimidating. The forces that are arrayed against us are powerful and insidious. We cannot stand idly by, permitting degrading behaviors because everyone is “doing it”, or “saying it”, or “wearing it”, or “smoking it”, or “drinking it”. The re-evangelization of the world is at stake; the Christian family will re-evangelize the world, the only force that will oppose evil is our Church, our commitment to our beliefs and our strength as Christian families.

Children come to this world with specific physical and spiritual characteristics that are particular to each one; each person is given a specific temperament by God. In order to educate our children it helps to understand their temperaments. The work of an educator is to work with the strengths and weaknesses that each child has, as parents we should learn to discover the specific qualities of each child to help them improve but not to try to make them into someone else.

As our children develop in the virtues, they will root out the vices for which we need to build a positive and constructive environment in the home. Being clean, keeping one’s belongings in order, being cheerful, developing a sense of good taste, understanding simple elegance without ostentatious luxury, – these and other virtues such as modesty, prudence, delicacy of manners, the habit of smiling, talking without shouting, being present without making a racket are small, everyday courtesies that prepare our children for being a member of the community, experiencing love, happiness and a sense of self-worth. The formation and education of the will is key in the development of self-discipline, just as living a life of piety and devotion is key to keeping the faith. The objective is to give our children all the tools they need to be able to make the right use of their freedom. Yet we have to keep in mind that, no matter how much we work at it, how many good things we do, it will not make us good Christians. It is not a question of “doing” but a question of “being”. And to “be” we need our loving Father’s mercy. We have to be hopeful souls of our most merciful Father. We need to ask Him to make us beings and not doers. We can transmit to our children to rely on the Father’s mercy. By being merciful ourselves the children will learn of the Father’s mercifulness.

STEP 1 Gather your information about your assets, including retirement funds, bank accounts and real property.

STEP 2 Choose the type of bequest you’d like to make.1. Unrestricted bequest. This is a donation to be used for St. Joan of Arc general funds. This donation would be used where it is most needed.2. Restricted bequest. This donation specifies how the money is to be used. (This could be restricted to go into the endowment, a specific ministry, or the building fund.)A bequest can be made in a number of ways:• A specific dollar amount.• Specific assets, such as securities, real estate, or tangible property.• Retirement account assets, consisting of any benefits remaining in your retirement plan.• A residuary bequest, St. Joan of Arc receives all or a percentage of your estate after all other obligations are met.• An existing will or trust can be easily amended to include a gift to St. Joan of Arc without rewriting the entire document. Your attorney can prepare a simple document, called a codicil, which adds a new bequest while reaffirming the terms of your will. Similarly, an attorney can prepare an amendment to a revocable trust to add St. Joan of Arc.

STEP 3 Meet with your estate planning attorney. If you need to create a will or just update your existing document, you’ll want to get advice from your estate planning attorney.

An attorney can advise you as to the best way to structure your will in order to take care of your loved ones first and then your charitable interests while assuring the best tax benefits.

As a charitable, not-for-profit all bequests to St. Joan of Arc are fully deductible for estate tax purposes.

STEP 4 Contact us.We acknowledge and welcome donors into our Arc Angel Society. Members are invited to special member events and receive special mailings. (We also recognize and respect the wishes of anyone that wishes to remain anonymous.)

Please contact Wendy Horton in the Development Office at (561) 952-2838 or [email protected].
