9AM – Holy Mass (English) followed by “Dozynki” celebration

READING I: Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 READING II: James 3:16 – 4:3

GOSPEL: Mark 9:30-37

CITY OF CHICAGO mandates that masks must be worn, regardless of vaccination status, at all indoor settings.

Dożynki (harvest celebration) is considered to be one of Poland’s most revered traditions. For 1,000 years in Poland, the tenant farmers presented the lord and the lady of the manor with gifts and garlands of wheat and wild flowers as part of a joyous fall celebration of the harvest. Throughout Poland’s history much importance was placed on the harvest because it represents the fruits of the farmers’ labors, as well as their ability to sustain themselves throughout the winter months. In gratitude, the “starosta” or lord of the Manor shares food, drink and music with his tenants. Dożynki reminds us today of our inherent connection to the land and to nature itself. Without the land, both in the past and present, there is no bread or life and indeed, no cause for celebration.

PARISH NEWS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

EDUCATION AND YOUTH COMMISSION Polish National Union of America Fraternal and Benefit Society

1006 Pittston Avenue Scranton, PA 18505 website: www.pnu.org Email address: [email protected] Summer 2021

Dear Friends: As we approach summer it is that time for our annual PNU Education and Youth Commission appeal for your prayerful support of our stipend program. This annual program of our commission benefits our PNU college students who meet the requirements. Although we are coming to the end of the Covid 19 pandemic, we decided in place of our annual raffle we are again issuing an appeal letter for donations to help support this important fraternal effort. The three great cardinal virtues are faith, hope and love. Charity as an act of genuine heart-felt love is so closely related that it is sometimes employed in the sense of love and is regarded as one of the three great virtues. Charity in its various implications and forms of action must hold a high place in the life of every Christian. The members of the Education and Youth Commission of the Polish National Union of America ask you to prayerfully consider giving a gift that will be used, appreciated and always remembered by our younger members going to college or schools of higher learning. Over the past years, thousands of deserving students have received stipends from our Commission. For the 2020-2021 school year 25 students received stipends. On behalf of these grateful recipients, we thank you for taking to heart the words: “And now faith, hope, and charity abide, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.” 1 Corinthians 13:13 Please make your charitable donation to the PNU Education and Youth Commission and send it to the above address. May God bless you; your family and we again thank you for your prayerful consideration of this appeal.

Fraternally Yours in Christ, Mary Ann Stankowski, Chairperson Most Rev. Anthony Mikovsky, Prime Bishop of the PNCC Martin Wachna Jr., Chief Executive Officer of the PNU Very Rev. Robert Nemkovich Jr., Vice-Chairperson Carol Mikovsky, Secretary

OPENING HYMN: (Please stand)

“We Gather Together”

3

CONFITEOR (Please kneel)

Almighty Father, You know my deepest secrets. I confess that

I have, through my own fault, sinned against Your holy laws

striking the breast, and continuing

in my thoughts, in my words and in what I have done or failed

to do. I sincerely regret my sins and I am truly sorry for

offending You. I ask, Father, that in Your mercy You pardon

my sins. I promise to change my way of living so that through

a deeper holiness I may better serve You throughout the rest of

my life. I ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, all the saints and you,

my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

4

ENTRANCE HYMN: (Please be seated) “All Creatures Of Our God And King”

5

ENTRANCE VERSE (Please be seated)

V. Yet I, like a trusting lamb led to slaughter, had not realized that they were hatching plots against me.

R. But You, O Lord of hosts, O just Judge, searcher of mind and heart, let me witness the vengeance You take on them, for to You I have entrusted my cause!

V. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

R. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

C: Lord have mercy. R: Lord have mercy.

C: Christ have mercy. R: Christ have mercy.

C: Lord have mercy. R: Lord have mercy.

GLORY (Please stand)

READING I: Wisdom 2:12, 17-20 (Please be seated)

A reading from the Book of Wisdom:

The wicked say: Let us beset the just one, because he is obnoxious to us; he sets himself against our doings, reproaches us for transgressions of the law and charges us with violations of our training. Let us see whether his words be true; let us find out what will happen to him. For if the just one be the son of God, God will defend him and deliver him from the hand of his foes. With revilement and torture let us put the just one to the test that we may have proof of his gentleness and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a shameful death; for according to his own words, God will take care of him.

L: This is the Word of the Lord. R: Thanks be to God.

RESONSPORIAL PSALM:

8

READING II: James 3:16 – 4:3I (Please be seated)

A reading from the Letter from James:

Beloved: Where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there is disorder and every foul practice. But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace for those who cultivate peace. Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? You covet but do not possess. You kill and envy, but you cannot obtain; you fight and wage war. You do not possess because you do not ask. You ask but do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

Lector: This is the word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God.

ALLELUIA (Please stand)

9

GOSPEL: Mark 9:30-37 (Remain standing)

Celebrant: The Lord be with you. Response: And also with you.

Celebrant: A reading from the Holy + Gospel according to Mark: Response: Glory be to You Lord.

Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it. He was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.” But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him. They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they remained silent. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”

Celebrant: This is the Gospel of the Lord. Response: Praise be to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

10

HYMN TO THE HOLY SPIRIT (Please kneel)

11

PROFESSION OF FAITH (Nicene Creed) (Please stand)

I believe in One God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, of one being with the Father.

Through Him all things were made. For us and for our salvation He came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit, He was born of the Virgin Mary

here genuflect

AND BECAME MAN.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried.

On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son, He is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

12

GENERAL INTERCESSIONS (Please stand) The Celebrant introduces the intercessions:

C: The Lord is close to all who call, so we ask for help in our needs:

Then the Lector begins by saying:

L: For all who follow the Christian way, that they may learn to rejoice in God’s boundless generosity. (Pause for silent prayer) R: Lord, hear us. L: For this community, that all may feel welcome here, newcomers and longtime worshippers alike. (Pause for silent prayer) R: Lord, hear us. L: For workers and those who employ others, that industrial peace may result from the rights of all being respected. (Pause for silent prayer) R: Lord, hear us. L: For those who cannot find work, that their needs may not be forgotten. (Pause for silent prayer) R: Lord, hear us. L: For all the sick, particularly those coming to the end of their earthly life, that they may experience comfort on the journey to their Father’s house. (Pause for silent prayer) R: Lord, hear us. L: For those who gone before us in faith, especially all deceased members of the Polish National Union, that the Lord’s generosity may assure them of a place in the kingdom. (Pause for silent prayer) R: Lord, hear us.

The Celebrant will now offer the concluding prayer.
