The AbbyFest Multicultural Festival is returning for its seventh year, on Sept. 27 at the Ag-Rec Building in Abbotsford Exhibition Park (32470 Haida Drive). The free event begins at 10 a.m. with the Parade of Nations – a march that displays the flags from all the countries represented at the event – as well as a short opening ceremony. The family-friendly event closes at 6 p.m.Attendees can enjoy more than 50 booth dis-plays, a number of cultural food vendors, and
a day of cultural entertainers on both the indoor and outdoor stages.
The newest addition to this years’ AbbyFest is a beer
garden, which closes at 8 p.m. and
features live entertainment. Among the many reasons why AbbyFest was cre-ated, there is one in particular that embodies its overall purpose: to foster interaction between dif-ferent communities, in order to shape an inclusive and respectful society. Abbotsford school trustee Stan Petersen, who serves as co-chair for the event, along with Ken Peterson of the organizing committee, believes that harmony comes from understanding one another, and the strength of the community comes from its diversity. “AbbyFest provides a venue for learning, communication and collaboration, and the more that we learn

from each other and the more that we communicate and collaborate with each other, the stronger our community becomes,” Petersen said. “I am very pleased that so many people and organizations are prepared to celebrate this diversity.”Petersen hopes attendees find value in the festival and have fun in com-memorating Abbotsford as the “third most multicultural city in Canada.”This year, AbbyFest will feature cultural songs and dance presentations from the Philippines, Mexico, China, Germany and Indio-Canadian com-munities, to name a few. There will also be a presentation from the international students at University of the Fraser Valley, a dunk tank, a martial arts demonstration and much more. Activities for the kids include various craft activity booths, face painting, a bouncy castle and more. The evening will close with a performance from the Abbotsford Men’s Chorus on the inside stage. With the help of dedicated committee members and countless volun-teers, Petersen and his team anticipate another successful festival to celebrate the diversity of the community and beyond.
