The Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) at Kelowna General Hospital opens its doors at 5:45 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2015. The first surgery gets underway at 7 a.m.

“We want people to know that when the IHSC opens, noth-ing changes for emergency care,” says Sharon Cook, exec-

utive director of Acute Services. “Anyone requiring emergency care should still come to the emergency department at the hospital.”

People requiring non-emergency care, should call their family doctor, visit a walk-in clinic, or call the BC NurseLine at 811.

What will be different? If there are patients in the Cardiac Services Intensive Care Unit (CSICU), they will be moved to the new CSICU in the IHSC on Sunday, September 27. If you have a family member in the CSICU, the hospital will ensure you are able to visit them in the new unit.

Beginning on September 28, people who have scheduled surgery will check-in for that surgery at the Surgical Services Reception desk located on the first floor of the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre.

Access to Surgical Services Reception is through the new Rose Avenue entrance located in the IHSC directly across from the Clinical Academic Campus, or through the Centennial Building’s main lobby. Volunteers will be on hand to help people find their way in the new building.

What to expect on opening day:

Our community should take great pride in that. Together we’re improv-ing and saving lives.”

KGH staff and donors celebrate the success-ful campaign wrap-up at a reception event in the hospital’s new court-yard. When the IHSC opens later this month, it will house 15 operat-

ing rooms for 12 surgi-cal specialties, includ-ing the most technical and advanced compo-nent, the Hybrid Operat-ing Room. Considered a game-changer in health-care, the Hybrid OR creates unprecedent-ed opportunities for in-novation in surgical ap-proaches and procedures that physicians could only dream of in the past. Be a Lifesaver – a campaign to raise $12 million for the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre has been successfully completed. The KGH Foundation announced the final total at $12,140,503.

$3 million dollar LIFESAVER

The original artist rendering of the IHSC showed only three floors, but the building was completed with a fourth floor where the perinatal department will move next spring.

the KGH campus, the Interior Heart & Surgical Cen-tre. Two of its 15 state-of-the-art operating rooms are purpose-built cardiac (open heart) surgical rooms. The largest and most advanced is the Hybrid OR.

At a cost of $4 million, the Hybrid OR combines traditional surgery with advanced minimally invasive procedures where small incisions under the guidance of sophisticated 3D live diagnostic imaging are made, allowing vascular and cardiac surgeons to combine traditional and modern surgical procedures once un-imaginable.

While cardiac surgery deals with the arteries of the heart, vascular surgery treats arteries throughout the rest of the body. Both the cardiac and vascular pro-grams have teams of four surgeons who provide care for the Interior Health region and its 740,000 patients from Williams Lake to Osoyoos, Merritt to Cranbrook and all the communities in between.

Two of the leading causes of death—heart attack and stroke—can be the direct result of an arterial sys-tem that has been slowly and progressively compro-mised by years of deterioration. In the Hybrid OR, the cardiac and vascular surgical teams will work togeth-er, simultaneously repairing life threatening problems when every second counts.

“Having a Hybrid OR means we will be able to treat very complicated elective, emergency and trauma pa-tients at KGH, saving many lives with world class techniques, right here at home,” says Dr. Pasenau, head of Vascular Surgery at Kelowna General Hos-pital. “We have a very busy vascular program, and the Hybrid OR will provide us with an equivalent pro-gram when compared to Vancouver and Victoria. That will have a huge impact on patient care within the Interior of BC.”

Be a Lifesaver’s goal was to ensure the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre opened fully outfitted with the crit-ical state-of-the-art equipment and support it needs to improve and save lives. Mission accomplished.

The largest gift in the KGH Foundation’s history came from an anonymous donor

who believes in the work of the hospital’s exceptional surgical teams and their need for the most advanced equipment to save lives.

When donated, the $3-million gift placed the $12-million Be a Lifesaver Capital Campaign signifi-cantly over its halfway mark. In fact, the single gift accounted for three quarters of the funds needed to equip the most advanced operating room in BC’s Inte-rior, the Hybrid OR.

“This gift is truly transformational and we are very grateful for the community’s belief and trust in our role to support world class health care here in the Okanagan” says Doug Rankmore, CEO of the KGH Foundation. “Equipment needed in the Hybrid OR will not be provided through government funding, but we are confident the community will provide the support to make this significant advancement a reality.”

Rankmore’s confidence was well-placed as the fi-nal total fundraised was more than $100,000 over the goal.

The quest for a Hybrid OR at Kelowna General Hos-pital could only come about with a new building on

31-year-old Kelowna realtor

was living the Okanagan dream,

building his home and business,

raising two children with his

lovely wife, Krista. Life couldn’t

have been better—until a stroke

nearly stole it.

March 24, 2014 began in typ-

ical fashion, with a workout at the lo-cal gym. Lucas and Krista checked five-year-old Cohen and three-year-old Ava into the facility’s daycare and headed to the weight room, where things quickly went awry.

“I was unreasonably agitated,” Lucas recalls. “I was mad at people, up-set with the equipment. When a popular song came on, I tried to show my wife the YouTube video and couldn’t re-

member my phone’s pass code. And I’m on my phone hundreds of times a day.”

When his speech be-came slurred and he started bumping into things, he knew some-thing was gravely wrong.

“I thought of stroke,” Krista admits, “but there was no way. Lucas is young. He doesn’t smoke. He’s fit.”

Rushed to Kelowna General Hospital, Lucas was quickly assessed in the Emergency Depart-ment before receiving a CT, then an MRI scan of his brain. When bleed-ing was confirmed, an angiogram determined the source of stroke: an

AVM, or arteriovenous malformation.

Caused by an abnor-mal connection between arteries and veins, an AVM can strike anyone, but if caught and treated quickly, has a good prog-nosis.

Thanks to the Rota-ry Club of Kelowna’s generous donation of $100,000 to the Be a Life-Saver Campaign in sup-port of the Interior Heart and Surgical Center, KGH recently acquired a state-of-the-art Stryker Nav-igational System. The equipment changed the course of Lucas’ treat-ment and contributed to his near miraculous re-covery.

Neurosurgeon and chief of surgery Dr. Gary Goplen, explains how it works. “This de-vice tracks our opera-tive instruments as we move them, and shows us in real time exactly how close we are to the boundaries of tumors, blood vessels, and critical structures. We can map the shortest route to our target with utmost preci-sion. Incisions are small-er, approaches are exact, and safety is enhanced.”

Funds for the equip-ment were raised through the Rotary Club’s 22nd annual Sysco Pro-Am Charity Golf Tourna-ment. The event brings top amateur golfers and

professionals together to compete for cash prizes and raise money for local charities. Sponsors in-clude Sysco Kelowna and Fortis BC among others.

Tournament chairman Bill Redmond proudly proclaimed 100 per cent of sponsorship ends up in the hands of worthwhile charities. “We thought this was a piece of equip-ment that was much needed,” he says of the Stryker system that al-lows people like Lucas to remain in their home-town while receiving life-saving treatment.

“The familiarity made all the difference,” Lucas says. “My family came to see me everyday. My dad

and sister were amazing. Krista’s cooking was so comforting. I walked Ab-bott Street during my re-habilitation.”

“I don’t know how we would’ve managed if Lu-cas couldn’t be treated in Kelowna,” Krista agrees. “We’re so grateful!”

“I didn’t get the photo-graphic memory I asked for,” Lucas jokes, “But being in the hospital, you have a lot of time to think. You ask yourself, ‘Why did I get so lucky?’”

A little luck and a lot of love from generous organizations like Ro-tary Kelowna, allow the KGH Foundation to an-swer with the best possi-ble care.

Green buildings create a healthier work and patient environment. They also reduce waste, conserve ener-gy, decrease water consumption, and drive innova-tion.

Some of the environmental highlights of the IHSC include:

• New gardens for the enjoyment of patients, their families and hospital staff. The gardens use water efficient landscaping that include drought-tolerant plantings

• The use of low emitting materials in adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, etc. to support high quali-ty indoor air

• Light pollution reduction in the interior and exte-rior lighting

• 96 per cent of all construction waste was diverted from the landfill.

Other LEED Gold certified buildings at Kelowna General Hospital include the Clinical Academic Cam-pus (2010), the Centennial Building (2012), and the Dr. Walter Anderson Building (2012).

therefore, is not an act, but a habit.- Aristotle

Betty and Werner Fink, KGH open heart surgery patientsTwo healthy hearts thanks to award winning cardiac program.

For Betty and Werner Fink,

2014 proved to be a miraculous and life changing year. Mar-ried 55 years and longstanding res-idents of Kelow-na, the couple main-tained a healthy and active lifestyle. They also took care to be educated on the signs of heart attack and stroke, should the unthinkable oc-cur. So when Werner experienced nau-sea and loss of con-sciousness while working on some plumbing at home, Betty called the am-bulance immediate-ly. Within 10 days, he was home recov-ering from successful open heart surgery, a lifesaving operation performed at Kelow-na General Hospital.

“The unexpected comes; that’s what life

is,” says Werner. “We’re so fortunate to have the hospital here.”`

In 2012, KGH imple-mented a Cardiac Sur-gery Program, launch-ing open heart surgeries in B.C.’s Interior. With-out the program, patients would be transported to the closest facility, either Vancouver or Calgary. And in November 2014, the program’s direc-tors, Dr. Guy Fradet and Dr. Carol Laberge, re-ceived the 2015 Leader-ship Quality Award from the BC Patient Safety and Quality Council.

Sharon Cook, health service administrator at-tributes the award to the program’s month-ly Cardiac Surgery Pro-gram Report Card track-ing outcomes against na-tional benchmarks. “This process has promoted teamwork, engaged staff, supported a greater vi-sion and created trust amongst team members. Guy and Carol’s leader-ship has…encouraged a culture of continuous im-provement and motivat-ed their team to provide a high quality of care.”

Werner Fink’s open heart surgery is one of over 1,000 complet-ed since the program’s launch in 2012. It was fortunate he did not have to travel for the opera-tion, but in Betty’s case, it was lifesaving.

A short six months af-ter Werner’s surgery, Betty was gardening at home alone when she felt an intense pain in her jaw. She remembered jaw pain as a possible warn-ing sign and immediately called 911. She was suf-fering internal bleeding from an aortic aneurism and required emergency open heart surgery to re-pair the damage. Thanks to KGH’s Cardiac Pro-gram, Betty did not have to be transported to Van-couver and was in sur-gery within 15 minutes of arrival.

Werner was called in when Betty was in sur-gery and remembers the report from the surgeon, Dr. Fradet. “He said ‘Not too many survive this, but I think I saved her’. He’s the best. A real hu-manitarian, a skilled sur-geon.”

Dr. Fradet remained on hand for Betty’s en-tire recovery. When she returned home, nurses called daily to check in. Betty has no memory of the day and all that her body endured, but feels so appreciative of the care she received.

She laughs as she ges-tures to the seven-inch scar in her chest. “I have such respect for the heart. It’s always working and never gets a break! It’s a miracle organ.”1979 Windsor Rd. | 250-860-2277

Dr. Guy FradetMedical doctors often give us a new lease

on life. A surgery or medical treatment can

bring about change in our lives that can be

euphoric, breaking down walls that previously

restricted our hopes and dreams.

When the Inte-rior Heart &

Surgical Centre is of-ficially opened on September 28, that same life changing event will be the ex-perience for Dr. Guy Fradet.

Fradet is a renown cardiac surgeon and medical director of Inte-rior Health Cardiac Sci-ence program.

“It’s the first time in my 30 years of medical practice that I will have the opportunity to work in a state-of-the-art fa-cility such as this. It’s very exciting for us to have this opportunity,” he said.

Fradet said the idea of developing a heart sur-gical centre in Kelow-na, so patients didn’t have to make the trip to Vancouver for surgery, has been discussed for many years.

“The views expressed about that go back to the 1980s so there is a lot of satisfaction now to see this facility be-coming a reality,” Fra-det said.

From a surgery per-spective, Fradet calls the new addition to Kelowna General Hos-pital a game-changer in health care for the Cen-tral Okanagan and the Interior Health region, both because of the ca-pacity for heart surgery but also because of the modern surgical tech-niques that can be ad-opted at the centre.

“The building has been designed with pa-tient care needs as the first priority,” he said. “Some of the design features are a little bit unusual for services compared to more tra-ditional medical build-ings, but it has been de-signed with the best in-terests of the patients and the staff who work here in mind.”

He cites one exam-ple of the of the ster-ile cleaning facilities being located on the third floor rather than at ground level, so that space can be better uti-lized for patient admis-sion and registration.

“From the colours that have been chosen for the interior to how the equipment location and medical care structure has been set up, it has been an amazing ex-perience to help create this facility and be able to offer our patients the best care possible.”

The actual heart car-diac surgery program was initiated back in

2012, but with the sur-gical centre up and run-ning the number of sur-geries will likely be at 12 to 13 a week at the outset.

As well, he said the cardiac surgery program will also work with Inte-rior Health to help pro-mote an ongoing stron-ger public awareness with regards to living a healthy heart lifestyle, echoing the comments made by Kelowna-Lake Country MLA Norm Letnick at a recent cer-emony to mark a com-pletion of a stage in the centre construction ear-lier this year, saying once the facility is com-plete, “I honestly hope nobody will ever have to use it.”

Fradet said as a doc-tor, he shares that need for people to take bet-ter heart health care of themselves, that pre-ventative measures ad-opted by people in their lifestyle choices will help alleviate growing pressure on health care budget demands.

Offering Independent and Assisted Living and Residential Care

Dr. Michael MacLeodThe best and the brightest around the world will likely take note of the opening of the Heart and Surgical Centre at Kelowna General Hospital.

Dr. Michael Mac- Leod, head of

general surgery at KGH, said a state-of-the-art medical facil-ity like the new cen-tre carries a definite ‘cool’ factor both for surgeons, specialists and university med school students.

“Recruiting new people with highly specialized skills to come to Kelow-na will certainly be en-hanced by the new sur-gical centre,” MacLeod said.

“And we all benefit from that, the patients for receiving a continu-ing higher level of care, and fellow doctors who get to share their exper-tise with each other.”

While cardiac surgery is the high profile new element that will bene-fit from the facility, Mac- Leod said the surgical centre will be of benefit for all types of surgeries.

“We have had four op-erating rooms that are now old and outdat-ed working continually for some time here now,” MacLeod said. “The new surgery centre will now include 12 ORs, with ex-pansion down the road to add another three sur-gery rooms when they

become needed.”Two of those new ORs

will dedicated to cardi-ac surgery, and anoth-er will be on stand-by for emergency C-section procedures. The rest of the rooms will be open to other types of surgery.

“They will be room shells for now but hav-ing that room for expan-sion will be important as the challenge for surgery services grows,” said Ma-cLeod, noting that while the centre is located in Kelowna, it will serve the much wider region of Southern Interior B.C.

MacLeod said the new facility will be a beautiful place for staff to work, great for the morale of both the medical staff and patients.

“To see the new equip-ment in place in a brand new modern facili-ty, that inspires confi-dence in everyone and is a great place for doctors to work,” he noted. “It will be hard, I think, to look anywhere and find a medical facility that can provide better care than what this surgical centre will be able to provide.”

Speaking of the equip-ment, bolstered by an ambitious $12-mil-lion fundraising cam-paign headed up by the Kelowna General Hospi-

tal Foundation, MacLeod said he was impressed by the dedication of the community to see that objective met.

“I can’t express any-thing but gratitude to ev-eryone who helped raise dollars for this facility. I only became head of sur-gery last year but I have attended meetings and fundraising groups and it’s been great to meet people involved in this and admire the time and dollars that have gone into this campaign,” he said.

Along with attracting specialized medical care practitioners, MacLeod noted the UBCO medi-cal school learning ex-perience will also be en-hanced by working in such a state-of-the-art facility.

“The students will have hands-on exposure to new technology and techniques for medical care rather than reading about it in books,” Mac-Leod said, noting those graduating doctors may also be more inclined to stay and work in Kelow-na because of that acces-sible medical care tech-nology.

“It’s going to be very exciting for all of us when the building is offi-cially opened,” he added.

Interior Health selected Stu-

According to IH, the company will be responsible for over-seeing renovations on the second floor of the Strathcona Building to accommodate six coronary care unit beds, plus space for two future CCU beds, as well as 34

cardiac inpatient beds and associated support spaces. KGH currently has 407 beds.

Upgrades to the me-chanical and electri-cal infrastructure in the building will also be part of the $32-million proj-ect. The renovations to the Strathcona Build-ing are part of the over-all IHSC project and the money to pay for them is included in the heart centre construction bud-get.

The second floor of the Strathcona Building is currently home to nine operating rooms that are moving to the new Inte-

rior Heart and Surgical Centre at KGH.

This move will open up space in the Strathco-na Building to create the 40 single-occupancy in-patient rooms with their own washrooms. Cur-rently these beds are lo-cated elsewhere in both the Strathcona and the Royal Buildings at KGH in a mix of four-bed, pri-vate and double-occu-pancy rooms.

The work is expected to be completed in 2017 and will be done in phases to support the new cardiac and surgical operations in the IHSC.

Siemens is proud to install the first Artis zeego in British Columbia at the Kelowna General Hospital, Interior Heart and Surgical Centre.

Artis zeego is the first multi-axis system based on robotic technology that can be positioned the way radiologists and surgeons want. With our experience of installations in operating rooms around the world – in vascular, cardiac, cardio-vascular, neuro, trauma, and orthopedics surgery – we constructed Artis zeego to overcome the limitations of conventional systems in the OR environment.

It eliminates the need to transfer patients to the OR and shortens the transition from open surgery to imaging as the C-arm moves smoothly and quickly from the park position to the table. Pre- and post-operative imaging can be performed directly in the hybrid room.
