The cream of Australia's show jumpers and riders will be competing at this year's Royal Melbourne Show on most days. But horses are only one of the many attrac-tions involving the animal world.

Visit the large pavilions around the Showg rounds to in-spect the world class exhibitions of cattle, dogs, cats, birds and poultry etc. There are also rabbits, 15 varieties of cavies and donkeys.

More than 16 breeds of horses and ponies are featured this year. There are more than 20 breeds of beef and dual purpose cattle, and five breeds of dairy cattle. The sheep industry provides no less than 18 breeds.

You will also find there are four breeds of dairy goats and Angora goats, and five breeds of pigs. But the largest variety can be seen in the canine world where more than 130 breeds of dogs are represented, along with 69 varieties of cats.

SPEEDWAY SIDECARS

Speedway sidecar racing is more than 50 years old in Australia, but not the way the spectacular Walker Brothers ride. They will take to the Royal Melbourne Show arena to present an exhibition of skill and dar-ing in the form of a series of scratch and handicap races.

This is the "hottest" speedway family in the Com-monwealth with the brothers — Ken, Robert, Jamie and Clint, and father Jack — providing action worth going miles to see. It is also one of the most dangerous forms of speedway.

The Walker Brothers will compete in the main arena on Friday, September 17 at 7.45 p.m., on Saturday, September 18 at 8.30 p.m., and on Sunday, September 19 at 7.20 p.m.

THE FLYING GOLLANS

— presented by Woolworths When it comes to trick riding on horseback, the

Gollan Brothers are Australia's best, and certainly the most spectacular with horses. Don't miss seeing their act this year, which they will present on eight occasions.

Ian Gollan (pictured left demonstrating his superb skill), will be joined by brother Jock with an incredible repertoire of tricks that will include the famous "double under the belly ride".

There's no trick photography with any of these stunts like you may see in some movies. This Is sheer talent and daring, which places the boys in world class when it comes to trick riding with horses.

The Flying Gollans can be seen on Friday, September 17 at 7.00 p.m., Saturday 18th at 1.30 p.m., Sunday 19th at 4.45., Tuesday 21st from 3.15 p.m., Wednesday 22nd at 2.10 p.m., Thursday 23rd at 2.00 p.m., Friday 24th at 3.30 p.m., and Saturday 25th at 2.15 p.m.

Pony Rides Pony rides for the children can be had each day of

the Royal Melbourne Show from the rear of the Pig Pavilion. Lovely ponies, and an ideal way of introduc-ing children to horse riding, for a charge of only 50c.

THE FLYING LOTAHS — presented by Manchester Unity

The Lotahs have been In circuses and shows for more than 35 years, but three of the family will present a first for Australia at this year's Royal Melbourne when the beautiful Ella, Sue and Beverley will present the first all-female combined sway pole, ring and trapeze act In this country.

Ella opens the display with many of her great tricks on the trapeze while suspended from the 100 ft. Clarke crane Jlb high above the arena. And above her Is Sue performing her breath-taking performance.

The thrilling climax arrives when Bev Joins the team, with Ella climbing to the top of the sway pole some 130 feet above the ground. It's an act you will not want to miss.

The lovely Ella Is pictured here with her feet on the ground. She says she still gets butterflies before each big act. Only a year or so ago she did fall after equip-ment failure during a motorcycle high-wire act, and was sidelined for four months.

At right Is Sue, who will also be part of this special attraction at this year's Royal Melbourne.

The Flying Lotahs can be seen on Friday, September 17 at 2.10 and 8.45 p.m., Saturday 18th at 7.00 p.m., Sunday 19th at 5.15 p.m., Tuesday 21st at 8.00 p.m., Wednesday 22nd at 3.15 p.m. and 9.00 p.m., Thursday 23rd at 3.45 p.m., Friday 24th at 3.15 p.m., and Saturday 25th at 3.20 p.m.

Is it a bit early to call Omega DeVille Design a classic?

Usually the term "classic" would refer to something quite a few years old.

However, the new Omega De Ville Design quartz could be an exception.

It has timeless style that's rather uncommon amongst watches these days.

To create it, Omega crafted a superb watchcase and matched it to a perfectly integrated bracelet.

Bush Turkey - live Free live entertainment will be provided by well

known colonial music bands in a series of live con-certs presented by the CBC Bank on Saturday, September 18; Sunday, September 19; Thursday, September 23; and Saturday, September 25.

The times for the Bush Turkey get-together for most days are - 10.30 to 11.30 a.m., noon to 1.00 p.m., 1.30 to 2.30 p.m., and 3.00 to 4.00 p.m. This rollicking entertainment is free and lots of fun. Don't forget, it's on the AMP Lawn.

Comic Characters For the young (and the young at heart), the all time

comic favorite "Snoopy" will be making his first ap-pearance at a Royal Melbourne Show, by courtesy of Pepin's Showgrounds Pharmacy.

"Snoopy" can be seen on the AMP Lawn each day, along with his friends the "Smurfs", 3KZ Koala, and some clowns, including the Paddle Pop Lion. It's great fun, and it's all free.

There will be three shows featuring "Snoopy" and his friends daily. These will be at 11.30 a.m. to noon, 1.00 to 1.30 p.m., and 2.30 to 3.00 p.m. Remember the venue, the AMP Lawn.

Live Broadcasts of "Rave" Show The popular teen show of "Rave" on ABC radio will

go to air live from the Royal Melbourne Show on Friday afternoon, September 17, direct from the AMP Lawn.

Doug McLeod will be talking to showtime person-alities, along with young showgoers, and introducing top bands. It's an entertainment special, and also provides showgoers with a rare opportunity of experiencing what goes on behind the scenes for a top radio program.

Job Centre The Commonwealth Employment Service has had

outstanding success with its previous involvement with the Royal Melbourne Show - last year filling more than 700 positions for the Show, many of these placed within three hours notice.

This year the C.E.S. office is located in McGregor Street, directly behind the Plummer Avenue National Bank. Exhibitors still interested in employing extra staff should contact the Job Centre on 376 6274, or the Moonee Ponds office on 370 1211.

We've re-invented the nianola. We've not only re-invented it,

Yamaha's advanced micro-computer technology has moved the pianola into the 21st century.

Even if you've never played a note in your life, the new Yamaha PC 100 keyboard will let loose the Liberace in you in less time than it takes to read this advertisement.

You'll actually be making music in moments without lessons — the keyboard helps you to learn as you play.

The Playcard System does it for you.

ThTe PC 100 keyboard incorporates the unique Yamaha Playcard System. You can programme the keyboard to play anything in the Playcard library from the classics to contemporary.

Just slip in a card and make music.

Simply slide in the special Playcard music sheet, press a button and the keyboard plays the entire piece for you just like an old fashioned pianola — but that's where the similarity ends.

It shows you which note to Now that you've got an idea of

the melody, its' your turn. Individual key lights show you which notes to play. Naturally you'll be a little hesitant at first, so the tempo slows down to your pace. As you become more adept, the tempo increases accordingly.

It even helps you practise. if you cant get a phrase right,

you can make the PC 100 automatically repeat the trouble spot so you can practise.

Soon you'll get the hang of the melody and you can try playing it in tempo, with or without the key lights — and it's only taken moments.

Features you wouldn't expect for the price.

Besides the Playcard System, you can choose from ten authentic instrument 'voices' from piccolo to piano and ten popular rhythms —features you'd expect on a $5,000 organ. ...

1,07

You can even connect the PC 100 direct to your stereo system for a full sized organ sound.

Chance your arm and try your hand.

The new Yamaha PC 100 with Playcard System will have anyone making music in moments, and then for many years to come.

But the only way you'll appreciate all the features of this brilliant and unique instrument, or indeed any one of Yamaha's amazing 'Little Wonder'9 organs, is to try your hand at'

FIREWORKS DISPLAY TO REMEMBER A fireworks display with a difference describes the

spectacular attraction lined up for you during this year's Royal Melbourne Show, as the Howard family will take you back in time to the gangster era of old Chicago. Suddenly, there's a scream of police sirens and the familiar crackle of gunfire as the "goodies" and the "baddies" shoot it out.

There have been four generations of the Howard family involved in organised displays of fireworks since great-grandfather Howard founded the family business in 1922 in New South Wales.

Since then they have been commissioned to ex-hibit their flair and color at some of the major events

around the world, including Disneyland (USA), Royal visits, Melbourne Moomba, and Australia's major shows. The name of Howard is today well known in-ternationally and linked with spectacular fireworks with a difference. Pictured here is one of their color-ful displays. But just wait until you see what they have in store for patrons to the Royal Melbourne Show this year. This remarkable display of fireworks can be seen on Friday, September 17 at 8.15 p.m., Saturday 18th at 9.15 p.m., Tuesday 21st at 8.30 p.m., Wednesday 22nd at 8.30 p.m., Thursday 23rd at 8.00 p.m., and Saturday 25th at 9.30 p.m.

GREATEST LIVESTOCK PARADE IN THE WORLD

Many a visitor from overseas attending a Royal Melbourne Show has been heard to claim that this must surely be the greatest parade of livestock to be seen anywhere in the world.

FARM MACHINERY The display of farm machinery at the Show this year

features a diversity of equipment and is the largest gathered for some years.

It includes: Massey Ferguson, Kubota and Iseki tractors, Celli rotary hoes, Edlif slashers and tillers, Ryan agri-ploughs, Clough plough and irrigation equipment, water pumps, motor vehicles of all sizes and makes, and many other wondrous sights.

There is also the Royal Melbourne Show's dearest show bag on display. Its value — $10,000. Now, what's a show bag got to do with farm machinery? That's for us to know, and you to find out!

Tourist Project Show patrons will see a most ambitious and ex-

citing tourist project in a display concerning the $30 million Woodleigh Heights Development, which is Victoria's third time share resort. Time sharing is one of the fastest growing leisure and holiday concepts in the world today, and is based on joint ownership without worries of maintenance and taxes. The display is in the Trade Pavilion, Lennon Avenue.

THE CARS THAT FLY — presented by

Bill Patterson Holden

One of the most popular attractions at Royal Melbourne Shows has been the Marlboro Holden Precision Driving Team with the flying ramp jumps, handbrake spins, formation driving, spectacular crossovers, and even driving to music.

The Melbourne arena allows the team to perform at their best because the wide track and long straights enable speeds up to 80 kilometres in tight formation. This year's act will be highlighted by team leaot)r Lloyd Robertson when he "pilots" his Commodore over 40 feet between ramps, while Murray Coote, Dennis Brown and new team member Dave Shannon, crossover beneath the flying car.

When the team is not performing in the main arena, the cars that "fly" can be seen on display in the area near the woodchop section, along the Epsom Road fence. They will arrive at the Show on September 17, remaining there for the duration of the Royal Melbourne.

The Marlboro Holden Team can be seen in 11 per-formances, from Friday, September 17 at 3.15 and 9.10 p.m., Saturday 18 at 3.30 and 7.40 p.m., Sunday 19 at 4.00 p.m., Tuesday 21 at 9.00 p.m., Wednesday 22 at 9.20 p.m., Thursday 23 from 10.15 p.m., Friday 24 at 2.00 p.m. and Saturday 25 at 3.40 and 8.30 p.m.

THE TOYOTA HI-FLIER

The Toyota Hi-Flier will be appearing regularly at the Royal Melbourne Show on Friday, September 17 at 6.00 p.m. Saturday 18th at 9.00 p.m. Sunday 19th at 4.30 p.m. Tuesday 21st at 9.30 p.m. Wednesday 22nd at 8.10 p.m. Thursday 23rd at 8.30 p.m. Friday 24th at 9.30 p.m., and on the final day at 3.10 p.m.

FLAT TRACKING

Chris Kelly, holder of both an Australian and Victorian champion-ship, will be one of 30 top riders from Melbourne's Hartwell Motor-cycle Club that will provide a series of two and three-wheel super cycle demonstrations this year.

Hartwell this year is celebrating 50 years as a club and a major force in motorbike events, with the boys all fired up to provide a spectacle that will take beating when it comes to fast and furious action. Chris Kel-ly will head a star-studded line-up, supported by the experienced Paul Keam, Rod Macreadle and Craig Stafford.

The flat tracking demonstrations can be seen in the main arena on Thursday, September 23 at 9.45 p.m., Friday 24th at 9.00 p.m., and Saturday 25th at 9.00 p.m.

Most feature attractions at major shows are based on special talents that have been developed by members of families associated with the circus, or based on incredible daring and brought to a state of perfection through many long hours of specialised training.

When Greg Glascott became interested in hurdling when still a schoolboy, little did he realise what the future held for his incredible talents in this field. Instead of going on to represent Australia at some Olympic or Commonwealth Games, Greg found he had amazing talents for hurdling higher and further than other successful competitors in this field.

When word of his skill began to spread it resulted in a challenge being made that he could not hurdle over the bonnet of a car. With this accomplished, his adventurous spirit sought further conquests and before long he was amazing people with his ability to hurdle the highest point of a vehicle. And so was born the incredible "Toyota Hi-Flier" who will hold you spellbound with his ability.

But don't attempt to try this feat yourself unless your insurance policy is fully paid up to date, or without an ambulance standing by. Just one slip or misplaced foot could lead to serious injuries, not to mention the mess it could make of your car.

ABC RADIO CELEBRATES 50th BIRTHDAY

The ABC takes up residence in the Show Studio in McGregor Street to help celebrate a half century of broadcasting.

A number of popular Radio One afternoon programs will be broadcast live from the Royal Melbourne Show along with the ABC "Country Hour". The studio complex has large win-dows to enable you all to have a good view of your favorite ABC per-sonalities at work.

A large range of books, records and tapes can also be purchased from just outside the studio at the Showgrounds branch of the ABC "Shop". Regular listeners to the ABC will not want to miss a visit to the ABC studio in McGregor Street.

One of the all time great favorites on ABC Radio was "Blue Hills", Gwen Meridith's long running serial which stretched from 1949 to 1976. And here were the original cast pictured during the very first episode on February 28, 1949. From left they are John Nugent Hayward, Madeleine Howell, Nigel Lovell, Queenie Ashton, Patricia Crocker and Morris Unicombe.

FLORAL ART FREE LESSONS

Horticulture entries in recent years have increased so well that this section of the Royal Melbourne Show is now eagerly sought after by the public. The exhibi-tion of floral art is truly magnificent, as each year seems to create new standards.

This year the Horticulture has been relocated in what was the Pigeon Pavilion, in Lennon Avenue, next to the Animal Nursery. The finer points of floral art are demonstrated by members of the Australian Academy of Floral Art each day in the Epsom Road meeting room, opposite the Dog Pavilion.

Mr. Geoff McMahon, principal of the Academy, has scheduled a series of free lessons for country visitors to the Show. These will be conducted four times each day and will cater for about 25 people in each session.

Aboriginal Craft The Australian Government's Department of

Aboriginal Affairs is staging a superb display of early tools fashioned by Aboriginals, some dating back many thousands of years. Don't miss this fascinating exhibition in the Show's Trade Pavilion, Lennon Avenue.

ATHLETES IN WOOL The Australian Wool Corporation has supplied the

major components for the uniform Australian team members will wear at the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. And because of this key role with the Games, the Corporation has chosen for its theme at the Royal Melbourne Show — "Wool at the Com-monwealth Games".

The Corporation invited some of Australia's top designers and fabric manufacturers to create a col-lection with color and vitality — a collection with ap-peal to the young and the active. What you see in the wool parades exemplifies the versatility of wool for spring.

More than 2000 metres of "Celsius 30" (a lightweight woolrich fabric) was supplied for the blazers, trousers and skirts for the Games, with 500 striped ties being created by the AWC to match the sunny blue, yellow, green and white color schemes. The uniforms were designed and made by Fletcher Jones.

The parades will be held each day of the Show from Friday, September 17 with the exhibitions on the hour from 11.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m., apart from a later start of noon on September 17,19 and 24.

There are more than 130 breeds of dogs represented at this year's Royal Melbourne Show. So, is it any wonder the dog judg-ing area will be one of the busiest throughout the Show? 3KZ and DAIRY INDUSTRY'S ROYAL SHOW TALENT QUEST

YEAR OF THE DOG

According to Chinese custom, 1982 is the "Year of the Dog". In recognition of the loyal contribution the dog has made to the life of man down through the years, the RASV — in association with the Royal Australian Air Force, Guide Dog Associa-tion, and numerous dog clubs affiliated with the Kennel Control Council — are presen-ting free lunchtime demonstrations of dogs on the Woodchop Lawn.

The program for these displays between 12.30 and 2.00 p.m. is: Thursday, September 16 — Obedience by West Highland White Terrier Club. Friday — Kelpies working sheep. Saturday — Rottweillers and Mini Charrootts. Sunday — Obedience by Ger-man Shepherds. Monday — Guide Dogs for the blind. Tuesday — RAAF guard dogs. Wednesday — Guide Dogs for the blind. Thursday — RAAF guard dogs. Friday —Obedience by Collie Club. Saturday — Obe-dience by German Shepherds.

Don't forget the special salute to "man's best friend" in a mass Obedience demonstration under lights in the main arena on Saturday, September 25, between 6.00 and 6.30 p.m.

Radio 3KZ and the Dairy Industry have combined with the RASV to present the first Royal Melbourne Show Talent Quest. It's a light-hearted affair for all the family where everyone can have the chance at do-ing what they do best.

More than $3000 in cash has been made available by the Dairy Industry for prizes to heat winners, along with runners-up, encouragement awards, and of course the eventual winner, who will collect $1000, with $500 to the runner-up.

Comperes from 3KZ will conduct the heats in Cen-tre Point, Degraves Street, each night from Friday, September 17, through to the following Friday. The

heat winners will return on Saturday night to contest the final. Just fancy, collecting a rich reward for doing something you like.

The nightly prizes are well worth trying for as they are $100 for first, $50 for second, plus $25 encourage-ment awards. If you feel too bashful to hop in and have a go yourself, then support your friends or the other artists by visiting Centre Point during this great family entertainment in the evenings.

Rubella Shots Free rubella immunisation can be obtained during

the Royal Melbourne Show at the Deafness Founda-tion Caravan, corner of McCracken Avenue and Skene Street, each day apart from Sunday, September 19. The hours of this program are bet-ween 11.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m.

The picture of this old Holden will probably bring back a flood of memories for many, as the Holden played a key role in Australia's post-war progress.

Brothers Alec and David Hughes, and David's son Robert have recognised this nostalgic link with Australia by putting together a collection of these cars.

What started out as a hobby in 1968 has led to the best collection of Hoidens you will now see anywhere. The range covers 20 years of Australia's "own car", from this 1948 FX, which could then be purchased new for about $1200 (it's $10,000 for a Com-modore these days), to a 1967 "new look" HR.

See this remarkable collection of Australia's con-temporary motoring history by visiting the display in Lobb Street.

DISCOUNT TICKETS FOR SHOW RIDES

The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria — in agreement with Amusement Operators — have set a minimum and maximum price for show rides — and will offer a discount on the bulk purchase of "ride" tickets.

The minimum price will be 30 cents, and the max-imum price 60 cents for a ride for all children, or $1.20 maximum for an adult. Prices will graduate between the minimum and maximum In 30-cent multiples.

It is of special interest for families to note that dis-count tickets can be purchased. Sheets of 20 30-cent ride coupons are produced by the RASV and sold for $5, a saving of $1 on an individual basis.

The sheets of discounted tickets are available at turnstile entrances to the Showgrounds, the RASV In-formation Booths, and also at the ticket boxes for each amusement.

The "Clan Bands" display on the two Saturdays of the Royal Melbourne, is presented by James Hardie Industries Ltd. It consists of 12 of Victoria's best pipe bands combining under the leadership of senior drum major Bob Semple. The sight of these outstan-ding bands together is quite awesome.

Included in the ranks of this magnificent spectacle

are two Ladies' Pipe Bands — the Southern (who are pictured here), and St. Andrew's. Both these bands have done extremely well at recent Australian Pipe Band Championships. Don't miss the James Hardie Industries Massed Highland Band display at 8.00 p.m. on Saturday, September 18, and a week later on September 25 at 8.00 p.m.

A DISPLAY THAT TOOK A MILLION

YEARS A fascinating different display this year which took

a "million years to create" is mounted in the Hall of Manufacturers by Stone Art Industries, importers of marble and onyx.

The century old skills of creating an incredible range of products from marble can be seen, with show visitors likely to marvel at the expertise of these craftsmen who can reduce a hill of marble into table lamps, bookends, wine goblets etc., etc.

The marbleware is crafted from natural marble found at Hua-Lien, on the Island of Taiwan. It's an island even smaller than Tasmania. The craft is per-formed by natives who it is believed initially moved there from the Philippines, but who now live in the mountains of the eastern coast of Taiwan.

Remember, this display which is well worth inspec-ting, can be found in the Hall of Manufacturers.

Show riders and horses of varying ability can find suitable events for their standard at the Royal Melbourne Show. But the feature jumping events attract Australia's best jumpers and riders where only the very best on their day can carry off the rich plums.

A total of $6000 in prizemoney will be won in Divi-sion 1 and Division 2 events this year. Heading the im-pressive bill in Division 1 is "The Age Prince of Wales Cup", and the "ANZ Bank Grand Prix". Both are worth $1000 each, and you can expect the competition to be demanding and exciting.

Supporting these "classics" are the "Carlton and United Breweries Stakes" of $750 and the "Myer Em-porium One Round Stakes" also worth $750.

Division 2 also promises keen competition with the "Highpoint Shopping Centre Stakes" of $400, the "Hotel Southern Cross" of $350, the "Joseph Lyddy" of $350, along with "The Telmin", and "The Pure Pak" also carrying prizemoney of $350. While the prizemoney is important, the prestige of winning at a Royal Melbourne is the spur that drives competitors on.

Special attention will also be focussed on the teams section with the "National Bank International and Interstate" event worth $1000.

Wine Waiters' Race Some of Melbourne's best known restaurants will

be represented in the Wine Waiters' Race over an "obstacle" course where the major prize is a cellar of McWilliams Wines valued at $500.

Two heats will be held on Monday, September 20 at 11.00 a.m., and Tuesday, September 21 at 11.00 a.m. These will be on the AMP Lawn, Plummer Avenue. The final will also be there on Show Day, Thursday, September 23 at noon.

"Hold that Tiger", and star Richmond footballer Barry Rowlings does better than that, he takes hold of the two Tiger cubs — "Tinka" and "Dinky" in the Animal Nursery. Barry is a fast and tough Tiger himself, but with a little more bottle feeding, these two youngsters may not be so cuddly.

NEW ARRIVALS AT

"NATIONAL BANK

ANIMAL NURSERY" There are some very special new arrivals to be

found in the National Bank Animal Nursery this year, where the Tiger cubs "Tinka" and "Dinky" are assured star billing, especially when it is time for them to be bottle fed.

You may also see "Biff" the young Water Buffalo, and a real little character in young "Abdul" the Camel. But there are many other cute and cud-dlesome youngsters to be seen such as lambs, foals and calves, and some rare and wonderful birds.

Of course, not all of the attractions there are likely to make you want to take them home. How about the snakes and other reptiles? You can see these from close up though they are safely kept away from the public by reliable measures.

The kids will love a visit to the Animal Nursery, and what a wonderful way it is to help educate them to the ways of the animal world. The Nursery can be found in Lennon Avenue.

seen in the new Lennon Avenue Aquarium, will be the chance for visitors there to do a spot of fishing with the opportunity of winning a Gold Fish. Seen at right are a few hopefuls trying their luck.

With each ticket purchased for the Aquarium, a fishing permit is issued allowing the holder to borrow a rod and net, and go fishing for Gold Fish in the huge tank there. If you have the skill to collect a Gold Fish, the successful angler is given a ticket which when presented just before leaving the Show entitles you to take home your Gold Fish.

If all this sounds a little "fishy" to you, then check it out for yourself by visiting the Aquarium in Lennon Avenue and inspect the varied and fascinating display of tropical fish, and take time off for a little bit of fishing — you just might be able to strike "gold".

Oil Exploration The Australian Petroleum Exploration Association

has a display in the Trade Pavilion, Lennon Avenue, entitled "Exploring for Oil". It illustrates the pro-blems associated with this complex and important development in Australia's progress.

GLOBE OF DEATH MAKES

COMEBACK The Globe of Death returns to the

Royal Melbourne Show after an absence of almost 15 years, with many of today's young showgoers having never tasted the thrill of this dangerous and daring act.

The internationally acclaimed motorcycle stunt riding brothers, Jim-my and Roberto Constanos, perform this breathtaking act where just the slightest slip or miscalculation could mean death or serious injury.

The brothers loop the loop inside this huge $25,000 metal globe at what seems to be break-neck speed with little or no margin for error.

Jimmy is 25 and Roberto 23. They have been associated with show business throughout their lives hav-ing been born into a circus. Selecting a career inside the Globe of Death is one of the most lethal decisions any circus performers could make. See them in Smith Street, near Merrett Avenue.

HERALDIC SHIELDS

GAINING A NEW

LEASE OF LIFE In a world still reeling under the impact of the

technological age, the ancient days of Heraldic Shields and symbols have gained a new lease of life. A display of this ancient art which had its origin in the 11th century can be seen at the Royal Melbourne Show.

Knights who rode into battles are believed to have been among the first to display this family identity in the form of a crest or a shield. Few people in those days could read or write, but they could understand the pictorial language of the shield.

A growing interest in history has created a demand for reproductions of Heraldic Shields, leading to a revival of the skills that artists and metal workers so long ago brought into use.

VICTORIA POLICE EXHIBITION FOR 1982 A simulated rescue scene on a stretch of rugged

coastline highlights this year's Victoria Police Exhibi-tion. It involves the Water Police's latest acquisition, the 27 ft. Savage Sierra as it manoeuvres close to shore, while members of the Police Search and Rescue Squad winch a stretcher slowly up the cliff face. Overhead the Police helicopter hovers like a merciful angel.

This graphic scene highlights the vital function of the Police Operations Department, and the internal communications network which links all emergency services. Other features in the special display will in-clude Police Dogs, Police and the Ethnic Community, a section on domestic security that takes in doors,

lighting and the questions posed most by the elderly, while the traffic department will demonstrate the use of radar, the breathalyzer and digetector. This display is in Smith Street.

Out on the main arena the Victoria Mounted Police will stage a musical ride that includes new routines not shown before at the Royal Melbourne Show. These new and old manoeuvres are performed to the accompaniment of the Victoria Police Brass Band. These will be on Saturday, September 18 at 7.20 p.m., Sunday 19th at 3.35 p.m., Tuesday 21st from 2.00 p.m., Thursday 23rd at 3.15 p.m., and Friday 24th at 7.40 p.m.

One of these can't drain Victorids power supply.

One million can. It's very easy for a person to believe that a small domestic

appliance has no effect in the efficient allocation of Victoria's power supply.

It's also easy to believe that industry and commerce is where real power savings can and should be made.

But, contrary to these beliefs, when you add up the State's domestic users, they come to over 3 million people.

And that accounts for nearly half of Victoria power consumption.

So real savings can be made in the home, too. At the SEC, we're

planning to meet Victoria's MI/

CHAMPIONSHIP WOODCHOPPING

The chips will really fly when the "big guns" of the axe world come together for the Championship Woodchopping when more than $14,000 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs.

The $1400 "Marathon" will highlight the program, which is conducted in Australia's finest indoor wood-chop arena, the Boral Pavilion. Other events include the "BHP Thousand World Series". This is actually three events with each carrying prizes of more than $1500.

Last year Gary Hewitt finally became the man to topple the great Martin O'Toole in winning the Marathon Underhand title. Can he hold on to his title, or will O'Toole or some other up-and-coming axeman take it?

Other events Include the "Stihl Chain Saw Underhand 350mm Handicap" of $550, the "Mc-Culloch Chain Saw Underhand 300m Handicap" for $475, the "Glenrobyn Enterprises Standing Block 325mm" of $400, the "Wales Bank Australasian Stan-ding Block 400mm Championship" of $350, and the "Tait Timber Australian Hard Hitting 300mm Cham-pionship" for $500 in prizes.

The history of trains in Australia is now 130 years old. If you did not know that, then perhaps you might know where to find the biggest little train in Australia this month? That's much easier, as Ken Coleman will be appearing at the Royal Melbourne Show with his miniature train rides.

It's not just the kids who love to watch these magnificently constructed engines and carriages in action. It's something all the family can enjoy. With today's accent on motor vehicles, not all children get to ride in a train. So, make the most of your opportunities at the Show by allowing those "young at heart" to ride the Col-eman's miniature train.

NEW AMUSEMENT Wittingslow Amusements have for many years

been entertaining Royal Melbourne Show crowds with a wide range of "rides" and other amusements. This year (if you're game) take a ride on the new "Enterprise". For 40 people seated in 20 gondolas, the world revolves like mad.

The ride begins with a gentle but powerful rotation of the wheel. As the peripheral speed increases the gondolas swing outwards under the centrifugal force which presses you firmly into your seat. Little by little the huge swivel arm and wheel climbs to a vertical position.

The climax arrives when the wheel is vertical and you go through a series of huge loops. If you like plenty of thrills in your entertainment, then look for the Enterprise on the corner of Merrett Avenue and Skene Street (opposite the Railway).

Wonder Horses The famous Alcheringa Wonder Horses will per-

form each night of the Show in the Dugdale Sale Ring (except Thursday, September 16). These well trained and beautiful horses are well worth seeing in action. The Dugdale Sale Ring is in Straughton Parade. There will be a small admission fee.

ATHLETICS CAN BE FUN

For the first time at the Royal Melbourne Show the Victorian Little Athletic Association and the Victorian Athletic Association are presenting demonstrations and coaching hints each day between 10.00 a.m, and noon, from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m., and again between 6.00 p.m. and 8.00 p.m.

Top senior and junior athletic champions will be present. So, join in and learn a few tips from those who already enjoy so much from athletics. You will find them on the Epsom Road side of the Showgrounds, not far from the Woodchopping.

ARTS AND CRAFTS NOW THE BIGGEST The Royal Melbourne Show now has the largest

competitive Arts and Crafts display in Australia with entries totalling more than 5500. This year the display is presented by Coles and can be seen in the P. B. Ronald Pavilion, Plummer Avenue; the No. 2 Arts and Crafts Pavilion, behind the Cummings Grandstand; and the William Angliss Arts Centre.

New sections and classes this year include —handcrafted porcelain dolls, art in wool (wool pic-tures, murals etc.), millinery and quilting.

The excellent number of entries and the quality in the overall standard, makes an inspection of the Coles Arts and Crafts display a must. It also reflects the growing interest for city and country folk alike in this form of art whether it be the traditional or the con-temporary "cottage crafts".

Arts and Crafts can mean many things to many peo-ple, such as paintings, using all manner of materials. Why not take in the various displays? You will find some wonderful exhibits.

HORSES DISPLAY THEIR VERSATILITY

Horses always take an important role at any agricultural show, and when it is a Royal Melbourne Show, then you can be assured the finest of the equine world will come together seeking the prestige that goes with winning at this time honored venue.

Campdrafting One of the most exciting events associated with

horse riding competition is the action of watching working horses competing at Campdrafting, where rider and horse pit their wits against steer and the clock.

Australia's best known stock riders are all here in Melbourne for the 1982 CRA Campdrafting Competi-tion, with the heats conducted during the Show to decide the finalists. The aim of Campdrafting is to "cut" a steer from a yarded mob, then drive it around a pegged obstacle course and back to the yard in the shortest possible time. It's rugged, but it's great fun to watch.

The Campdrafting is on Saturday, September 18 at 6.00 p.m., Sunday 19th from 5.30 p.m., Wednesday 22nd at 6.00 p.m., Thursday 23rd at 4.15 p.m., and Friday 24th at 8.00 p.m.

Tentpegging is one of the most spectacular of all equine sports. And at the Royal Melbourne Show this month there are five sessions to decide the ARC In-dustries Ltd. Australian Gold Cup Championship.

Garryowen The "Garryowen" is the most demanding and

prestigious event for horsewomen in Australia. Not only did "Picasso" put his best foot forward in help-ing Mrs. Vicki Ward win the event last year, but the horse also put his head forward for the camera as well.

Mrs. Ward became the 47th winner of Australia's premier equestrienne turnout. The 48th will be judg-ed this year on the morning of Tuesday, September 21, when more than 60 hopefuls strive for the coveted award, which was introduced to commemorate the bravery of Mrs. Violet Murrell, who perished in a stable fire when trying to save her favorite mount "Garryowen".

Competitors are awarded points for conformation, soundness and manners of the horse; and for equip-ment, saddlery, costume and riding ability.

Tentpegging The thunder of hooves, the flashing reflection of

light on cold metal-tipped lances, and the roar of an excited crowd. That's thrilling and spectacular Tent-pegging. And the Royal Melbourne Show provides you with the best competition in Australia with the ARC Industries Ltd. Gold Cup.

Only the best ever make It to the Australian Gold Cup Championship, and only the best rider and horse on the day will help his team take off the coveted trophy. ARC Industries Ltd. invite you to witness the four heats and final during the Show.

The heats will be on Friday, September 17 at 6.30 p.m., Sunday 19th at 1.00 p.m., Wednesday 22nd at 6.30 p.m. and Thursday 23rd at 9.00 p.m. The big final of the championship will be staged on Saturday 25th from 7.00 p.m., followed by the presentation.

The action in Tentpegging is fast and furious, as each horseman attempts to aim and "carry" his target on the end of the lance while galloping at top speed. Just listen for the roar of the crowd when the Judge's flags signal a "carry".

R.A.S.V. EDUCATIONAL DISPLAYS

Delighted over the outstanding success of its pilot program last year of "Learning About Livestock", the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria has moved swiftly in arranging an even bigger educational pro-gram to operate throughout this year's Royal Melbourne Show.

More than 11,000 people participated in the pro-gram last year over the four days. A large percentage of these were school children. For many of them it was their first real taste of life on a farm. A substantial Increase in numbers seems likely this year with the educational program being expanded to every day of the Show.

RASV Director, Mr. J. B. Parry, said the Royal Melbourne Show was the ideal vehicle to use in arousing the curiosity of school students in farm animals and farm products as it could provide a stimulus towards a more extended study and understanding of the "signif icance of agriculture and the role being played today by the man-on-the-land.

Each day of this year's Show (apart from Tuesday, September 21), alternating demonstrations featuring "Milking and Calf Judging" and "A Year on a Beef Farm" will be held throughout the day in the Dugdale Sale Ring, corner of Degraves Street and McCaw Avenue. Adults will find it just as absorbing as the younger members of the family.

Other demonstrations of sheep and wool produc-tion and shearing will also be held throughout each day, while demonstrations of spinning and weaving will be given on certain days.

Included in the RASV Educational Displays will be a special exhibition in the Pig Pavilion involving pens of sow and litter, porkers and baconers etc. Breeders will operate a roster system to allow for at least one experienced man in this field to be present to answer questions for a two-hour period each day.

One of the problems urban families have in relating to farm animals can be their fear towards the larger variety. With few exceptions, such fear is unfounded. Seen here is a young man with complete faith in the family's bull as he found it a warm and soft spot to cuddle up to fora quick nap.

RASV WORKSHEETS FOR STUDENTS

Principals of Melbourne metropolitan schools who have been sent samples of these educational worksheets have been lavish in their praise for the skilful manner in presenting the drawings and the questions and puzzles.

These worksheets are available on request from the RASV. Primary school students visiting the 1982 Royal Melbourne Show are advised to secure these worksheets and make full use of them when they visit the special demonstrations arranged for the program of "Learning About Livestock".

Children of many urban families rarely get the chance to learn about livestock in a way that may often be second nature for the boy or girl brought up in country areas. For example, what is the difference between a wool sheep and one bred for meat? What are the characteristics of beef cattle and dairy cattle? And how do pork and bacon pigs differ?

To help answer these and other questions about livestock, the RASV has launched its special project of "Learning About Livestock". These worksheets should be taken with you when visiting the sheep demonstrations in the Daken Machinery Pavilion, the cattle demonstrations in the nearby Dugdale Sale Ring, and the Pig exhibition in the Pig Pavilion.

Learning About Livestock

The full details and timetables on this special educational feature of this year's Royal Melbourne Show appear on the previous page. For any queries concerning the livestock program, please contact Mr. R. M. Stickney at the RASV Administration Office.

FLEECE COMPETITIONS

The Fleece Competitions at the Royal Melbourne Show have been conducted since 1955, and for the past 25 of these years sponsored by the CBA Bank.

The three competitions are: Victoria Fleece, District Fleece, and the Australasian Lambs Wool. Fleeces in all three sections are on display for the duration of the Show in the Sheep Pavilion.

The judging was carried out on September 8 by John Mcl. Schmidt (chief judge), Ian Cr ;eron, N. L. Crisp and Brian Muir, while in the Lambs Wool section the judges were Vin Tyquin and Ken Woodfull.

Australia has long been producing the best fleeces in the world, and the standard of this year's competitions was right up with the very best of the traditions set by the Royal Melbourne Show.

Worksheets in the form of a Sheep Track, Cattle Track and a Pig Track have been printed by the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria for distribution to schools and students as part of its 1982 program of "Learning About Livestock".

Each of these special pamphlets was designed to make learning about all facets of cattle, sheep and pigs not only informative, but an interesting and en-joying challenge for the young student.

AUSTRALIAN SHEARING CHAMPIONSHIPS More than $4000 in prizemoney will be won at the

1982 Australian Shearing Championships at the Royal Melbourne Show when the fastest shearers in the land do battle in Centenary Hall.

The four events are — the "Panacur" Australian Strong Wool Championship of $1100, the "CUB" Senior Shearing Championship worth $660, the

"Sunbeam" Victorian Shearing Championship of $1160, and the "Power Farming Magazine" Invitation Teams title worth $800.

The "Panacur" heats are on September 16 and 17 with the final on the 18th. The teams section will be staged on September 18. The "CUB" title is on September 19, while the "Sunbeam" State title has its heats on September 23 and 24 with the final on the 25th.

Horse Exhibitions The Victorian Horse Council will mount a series of

special horse demonstrations on the Jersey Judging Lawn, adjacent to Centenary Hall, from 1.00 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. each day of the Show, except Monday and Tuesday, September 20 and 21.

The demonstrations are all free, and include the training of a Police horse, training the working horse, harnessing a team, horse shoeing and dentistry, and general horse handling.

PROJECT SUPERTOOTH

The Dairy Pavillon during the Royal Melbourne Show will be home for five good friends you should meet. "There's "Captain Carrot" —'Chewing Celery" — "Aussie Mushroom" —"Barney Bread Roll" and — "Meg the Egg".

These good friends are all members of the five food groups that provide a balanced diet for us all. They will be appearing In the Dairy Pavilion to launch . . . Project Supertooth.

This Is the fun and practical way to take care of your teeth. And while you are meeting these good friends, you can take a journey through the Plaque Tunnel and see how plaque collects on your teeth. By learning about a balanced diet, you are not only on the way to a healthy lifestyle, but also fighting your own war against plaque.

PRIMARY INDUSTRY DISPLAYS

"PLEASED TO MEET YOU . . . . . . WITH MEAT TO PLEASE YOU" That could well be the motto of the Australian Meat and Livestock Corpora-

tion at this year's Royal Melbourne Show as they are hoping to meet you In the Meat Hall, Lennon Avenue, where they are presenting a program designed to help the consumer put fun back Into buying meat.

This is where you can get in for your chop. Or, if you are playing for big stakes and don't wish to mince words by beefing about it, then steer yourself towards the top butchers there from the Meat and Allied Trades Federation who will truly be pleased to meet you with meat to please you.

There are numerous ways of putting the fun back Into buying meat and planning the proper protein diet for your family, and the trained Home Economists from the Gas and Fuel Corporation who are assisting the butchers, know all about It.

They can point out to you the pitfalls sometimes associated with meat buying, while they have good nutritional recipe Ideas with particular emphasis on the less expensive cuts.

A new addition to the Meat Hall panel of experts this year is Geraldine Dawes, from McCormick Foods Australia Pty. Ltd., who will share her expertise with you on the use of seasoning and spices.

With such good advice Just waiting for you at the Meat Hall, they are quite capable of transforming the timid cook into the adventurous — the wasteful Into the thrifty. And all through good advice, proven recipe Ideas, and good meat. It's a top team the Australian Meat and Livestock Corporation has lined up to meet you at the Royal Melbourne Show.

DAIRY FOODS The Australian Dairy Foods pavilion at this year's

Royal Melbourne Show has more than 1800 square metres of space packed with Australian dairy pro-ducts from 20 of our leading manufacturers.

It Is estimated that more than 140 tonnes of dairy food products will pass through the pavilion during the period of the Show. And all of this will be manufactured In Australia. This amount Is equal to about two months supply of dairy food products to pass through any major Australian supermarket.

Among the goodies awaiting visitors to this pavilion are more than 30 varieties of cheeses, Including Italian, Greek, Dutch and German types that are all now made right here in Australia. There will also be cheese spreads, cheese dips, butter, cream and over 30 flavours of yoghurt to be tasted.

Australia Is one of the world's great nations for pro-ducing excellent dairy products, with Victoria leading the way as this State produces more dairy products than all the other States combined. No wonder the Australian Dairy Foods is proud of Its display this year.

ift

The basis of good meat is in having quality cattle and good sheep. That's where agricultural shows play an important role in helping to upgrade these standards, with the Royal Melbourne Show being the biggest and best of them all. Just look at these magnificent Herefords winning in Melbourne. This breed has provided Australian housewives with some of their best meat for many years.

TURNING BOTTLES INTO WORKS OF ART Ex-patriate Australian, Mrs. Val Kernaghan, is now

helping many Australians develop an art of making unwanted glass bottles useful again and even a thing of beauty. This follows her incredible success in England and America.

This one-time mannequin for designer collections, turned her attention to this unusual form of art after discovering she was suffering from severe arthritis that one day seems almost certain to have her confin-ed to a wheelchair. Based on an invention she saw while in the United States, Val Kernaghan began to make beautiful pieces of work from old bottles, but she has since designed her own cutter and has published a well-illustrated booklet — "The Modern Craft of Bottle Cutting".

Mrs Kernaghan has returned to Australia after tour-ing England and North America demonstrating her amazing talents, though she is quick to point out how we all have some degree of artistic talent, and if given the opportunity, almost anybody can make glass bot-tles beautiful and useful again.

Val is pictured at right with some of her work from recycled empty bottles. The results of her ex-perience with this virtually new craft can be seen in the RASV Administration Building during the Royal Melbourne Show, where you will find her to be most informative and helpful in showihg how you too can take up this very interesting art, which is most inex-pensive.

From her interest in bottle cutting and the design-ing of her own style of cutter, Val will also show you another entirely new "do-it-yourself" craft she calls "Clock Collages". These are pictures you make yourself with the workings from watches.

The Clock Collage Kit is introduced with a hand-somely framed vintage car collection, with the outline of the cars in gold on a black and gold leaf wooden frame. They are ideal for home or office. Included is a packet of Swiss watch workings to allow you to easily make your own picture and to create your own time piece.
