ST. MARY’S NEW WEBSITE
Saint Mary’s launched our new website last week. Go to: stmarysmelrose.org and have a look. We plan to personalize it with photos and current information as we move forward. ParishSoft, our online giving program provider, is phasing out the present platform and moving to a new one. This re-quires all online givers to re-submit their donation information. Our thanks to the online givers who have already trans-ferred their donation to the new platform. If you are a current online giver and did not receive a letter regarding the new online giving program, please call the rectory. We always welcome new online givers! It’s a great help to both the parish and a convenience for you. No checks to write, no fishing for cash (which most of us don’t carry much any more) and no envelopes to remember to bring to Mass. If you do not currently use the online giving program and would like to do so, please click on the “new and improved” online giving link on the website. It will walk you through the process. Any questions at all, please call Marge at the rec-tory (781-665-0152, ext. 10). More on online giving in the weeks to come! Thank you!
Please pray for those who are ill and especially for

INTERESTED IN BECOMING A CATHOLIC? Part 6
Period of Purification and Enlightenment The third stage is the period of purification and enlighten-ment. It coincides with the season of Lent. It is a time of re-flection, prayer, and spiritual direction rather than a time of catechetical instruction. This period is intended to enlighten the minds and hearts of the elect with a deeper personal knowledge of Christ. During this time, the elect and candi-dates enter into a period of intense spiritual preparation and prayer which includes the three public celebrations of the scrutinies (for catechumens) and is marked by the presenta-tions of the Creed and the Lord's Prayer. The Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion are celebrated at the beginning of this stage. A Lenten retreat is offered as final preparations are made for the celebration of the sacra-ments. This period ends with the celebration of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. (Note: only the elect are baptized. All receive the sacrament of Confir-mation and are welcomed at the Eucharistic table. Once a person has received the sacraments of initiation he or she becomes a “neophyte,” which means “beginner” or “novice.”) Third Step: Celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation At the Easter Vigil, the catechumen receives the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy Eucharist and is a fully initiated member of the Catholic Church and will live out his or her response to God as a member of this faith community. Period of Mystagogy The fourth stage is the period of post baptismal catechesis or mystagogy. At this time, the newly initiated explore their experience of being fully initiated through participation with all the faithful at Sunday Eucharist and through catechesis. Emphasis is placed on the study of the Gospel, the reception of Eucharist, and actively living a life of charity, service, and love. The period lasts through the Easter season. During this time the deeper meaning of the sacraments, the Chris-tian life and prayer is examined. It is a time of growth when one’s understanding of the faith matures so that he or she can participate more fully in the Mass and in the life of the Church. On a different level, mystagogy is a lifelong process, one that all Christians are engaged in, as we all work to deepen our sense of what it means to live the Christian life.
If you are even a little bit interested in becoming a Catholic, please give Fr Shawn a call at the rectory
at 781 665 0152.
Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings for September 29, 2019
Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading Amos 6:1a, 4-7 Responsorial Psalm Psalm 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 Second Reading First Timothy 6:11-16 Gospel Luke 16:19-31
The Rich Man in today’s gospel never noticed Lazarus. In-stead, he accepted him as part of the landscape thinking it perfectly natural and inevitable that Lazarus should lie in pain and hunger while he lived luxuriously. The sin of the Rich Man was that he looked on the world's suffering and need but felt no compassion or pity in his heart. This para-ble challenges us to reflect on our own complacency and reasons for ignoring the sufferings of others. Only with Christ can we overcome such feelings and respond as his disciple!
Readings for October 6, 2019
Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 Responsorial Psalm Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9 Second Reading Second Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14 Gospel Luke 17:5-10
In today’s second reading, St. Paul reminds us of our re-sponsibility as disciples saying, “Stir into a flame the gift of God that you have…” When we feel that we do not have the courage to speak about Christ to others, Paul also re-minds us that “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love…” When the disciples were wor-ried about their mission they turned to Jesus and asked for an increase of faith. How about us? Will we take God’s word to heart and share it with courage?

Have You Ever Wondered “Who is the Deacon & Am I One to be Called?” If you are single or a sacramentally married, faith filled Catholic man, who loves the Church, would love to serve Christ and the Church as a minister of Charity, Word and Sacrament, you may discern God’s possible call to the Per-manent Diaconate. St. Maria Goretti Parish is hosting Session 1 of a 3 session Permanent Diaconate Inquirers Program September 30, 2019 at 7pm. The following 2 ses-sions will be held at the Pastoral Center, 66 Brooks Drive, Braintree, Tuesday, November 5 at 7pm and Saturday, No-vember 16, 9am-2pm. This is a half day Discernment Re-treat. Lunch will be provided. If you are married, you are strongly encouraged to attend all 3 events with your wife. This first session will discuss “Who is the deacon”, and address any questions you may have regarding the role and work of the deacon in the Church and community. The Diaconate Formation Program is 4 years in length and is open to single and married men who will be between the ages of 35-65 at the time of ordination.
St. Maria Goretti Parish is located at 112 Chestnut Street, Lynnfield, MA

instrumentalists!
It is wonderful to be here at St. Mary Parish!
We welcome back our current music ministers and in-vite new members to join our Music Ministry. Music Ministry provides beauty, joy, comfort, inspiration and musical prayer for our liturgies and various parish cele-brations. It helps us to worship together in a way that can be moving and powerful. We are grateful for the time, talent and commitment so generously given by our members. If you would like to learn more about music and would like to sing or play an instrument at Mass, please join us!

Father Joseph A. Connolly, SVD. We recently learned of the death of Father Joseph A. Con-nolly, SVD. Father Joe was a 1946 graduate of St. Mary’s School. After grammar school, Father entered the Society of the Divine Word in Techny, IL. He spent many years as a missionary in Ghana and when he returned to the States, he was assigned to the Miramar Retreat Center in Duxbury, MA where he fulfilled his priestly service until declining health these later years forced him into retirement. Our prayers are with his family.

SAFETY REMINDER!
Our first concern is always for the safety of the children. The area around the school is con-gested during morning drop-off and afternoon pick up despite the staggered schedules. Re-
gardless of where you park your car, please be sure to use the crosswalks. Remind your children to look both ways before crossing any street, and to wait for drivers to stop before crossing any street. Students and parents must use the crosswalks when dropping off or picking up students. Please do not stop your car in the middle of the street to drop off your child. This is an extremely dan-gerous habit that puts children at risk.
If you are driving, remember that Melrose has a 25 mph speed limit across the city. And most school zones have a limit of 20 mph. Please drive carefully.
