A high volume of sales in the Al-berni Valley and on Vancouver Island this summer is expected to continue into the fall season, says the Van-couver Island Real Estate Board in a press release.

Single family home sales in the Port Alberni West Coast region were up 60 per cent year over year in August, according to statistics from VIREB.

That increase is in part from continuing low interest rates, as well as affordable prices in the Alberni Valley. The price for a benchmark home in Port Alberni was $192,000 in August, a slight decrease from the same time last year.

VIREB president Jason Finlayson con rms that realtors were busier than usual in June, July and August but the market remains balanced overall.

“We’ve had a stronger summer

compared to other years, but our market didn’t see the feverish activ-ity experienced on the Lower Main-land,” says Finlayson. “And, despite steadily declining inventory through the board area … Sellers still need to price their home correctly for buyers

to bite.”VIREB also released its 2014 Buy-

er Pro le this summer for Vancouver Island. The average home in Port Alberni had three bedrooms, two bathrooms.

Based on surveys with home buyers in 2014, about 60 per cent of those who bought a home the Port Alberni-West Coast region either live here or have returned to live in the area. Most (89%) planned to make their new purchase home, 69 per cent bought their home for their retirement.

Everyone wants a home with a view and 70 per cent of buyers in the region ranked a mountain view as the top site characteristic. An ocean view (18 per cent ) and waterfront were second and third respectively.
