NOVA NEWSLETTEROFTHEVANCOUVERCENTRERASC VOLUME2012ISSUE5SEPTEMBEROCTOBER2012 FRIDAY NOV. 16 SFU HARBOUR CTR Dr. Sara Seager, Professor of Plan- etary Science & Physics at MIT. NOTE DATE CHANGE! Room TBA (see Meetup for details). SEPTEMBER 13 UBC Dr. Harvey Richer of UBC: Exploring Ancient Star Clusters with the Hubble Space Telescope. See map on page 4. My Telescope Upgrade Project by Steve Coleopy I had always had an interest in astronomy, since I was quite young, and I had bought a cheap refractor telescope from a friend of mine in high school. I got a lot of years of enjoyable use out of the telescope, looking at the moon, planets, double stars, star clusters, etc. However, I want to do more serious observing and some photography now. at telescope had a very cheap mount, and 1-inch eyepieces, and as the standard eyepieces are 1 ¼ inches, upgrading it didn’t seem feasible. I ended up giving it to a co-worker who is just developing an interest in astronomy. Some years ago, I was given a telescope by some friends. ey had bought it from the National Geographic magazine for their daughter to use, but it sat in their house not getting used for a number of reasons. ese friends knew of my interest in astronomy, so they offered it to me. e telescope is a Newtonian reflector, with a 114 mm (4 ½ inch) primary mirror and a 900 mm focal length. e telescope had an inexpensive alt-azimuth mount and plastic parts (see photo 1 below). e telescope would likely have sold for somewhere around the $100.00 mark, so I knew the quality would not be very high, but at least as good as the refractor used to have (and easier to upgrade). e mount was very flimsy, and I found it very frustrating trying to find and follow celestial objects using this mount. I had heard the quality of the mass-produced mirrors coming out of China (where the telescope was manufactured) when this telescope was made is quite acceptable, so I figured I would try to upgrade parts of the telescope until I could afford to purchase a better quality one. My first upgrade was to obtain a better mount, and preferably an equatorial mount. I had never used one, but the equatorial mount always sounded like it was easier to follow objects as they moved across the night sky. I decided I wanted to try making one, so I did some on- line research and found a set of plans for a German equatorial mount, made mostly of wood. I downloaded the plans and built the mount (see OCTOBER 11 BCIT Chris Lewicki, CEO of Planetary Re- sources: Space Rocks into Space Re- sources. Room TBA (see Meetup for details).
