Music & Mornings Many factors determine the amount of music a Country station plays in morning drive. The competitive situation, spot load, caliber of air talent and even a change in morning shows are among them. Most recently, PPM ratings have led a number of programmers to increase the amount of music heard between 6-10am. For purposes of this week’s study, we looked at a variety of market situations to see how many songs were played in morning drive on a Wednesday for the last 12 months (excluding December 2009). As always, all airplay information comes from our friends at Mediabase 24/7.

Stand Alone PPM Markets KKGO/Los Angeles has added a couple of songs per hour in the last three months. It averaged about 12 songs between 6-9am up until about three months ago when it bumped to 14-15 songs in that time frame. Its 9am hour has stayed steady at 14 tunes throughout the last year. WUSN/Chicago has been stable in its morning airplay. was hearing Tim performing ‘Live Like You’re Dying’ backed by the 90-piece orchestra,” KPLX (The Wolf) PD/afternooner Mark Phillips tells Country Aircheck. “He performed for an hour with his band to a near sold out crowd (the stadium was configured for about 45,000 people, I think). It was the culmination of a very classy evening to celebrate Super Bowl XLV coming to North Texas.” Adds KSCS’ Chris Huff, “Tim came onstage surrounded by the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders and a shower of fireworks. He didn’t perform his normal full set, but he certainly packed as much as he could into a 45-minute set. At one point, Tim threw souvenir footballs into the crowd from the stage [and] there is no doubt throwing a ball is in his genes. His perfect spirals easily made their way from the stage at the center of the field, well into the seats beyond the sidelines. It’s too bad the Cowboys didn’t perform as well Sunday night as Tim did two nights before!”

Marconi Small Market Station nominee WCNL-AM/Newport, NH GM/PD Steven Smith discusses his most important songs, artists or concerts: 1. Travis Tritt/I’m Gonna Be Somebody; Bad Company/Shooting Star: To me, these are the exact same songs. Both are great storytelling songs that follow the progression of the character. 2. Garth Brooks, April ‘97, Worcester, MA:

Garth was in his prime; he owned the audience. From lights “lifting off” the stage to Garth entering from the middle of a piano, flying around above the crowd, and the drummer playing upside down, ala Tommy Lee. The most amazing concert I’ve ever seen.3. Counting Crows, This Desert Life: This is the only album I’ve found that has evolved lyrically as I’ve grown. It’s been in my car for almost a decade, off and on. As I grow older and wiser, and the more I listen, the more life lessons I pick up. 4. Counting Crows/Anna Begins: Easily my favorite song of all time. I’ve heard it a million times, and sung it out of tune each time. Never a radio hit, this is a gem off the Counting Crows’ first album. 5. Rick Dees and Dick Bartley: Growing up, I didn’t have cable TV, but I had a radio. There was one spot in my parents’ kitchen where I could get a radio station out of Boston that played Dick Bartley’s Solid Gold Saturday Night. I loved listening to Dees. He was funny, quick and played the best new music. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: Pink Floyd’s Dark Side Of The Moon. I don’t like progressive rock, plus I’ve been told that I “have to listen to it,” which makes me care even less.• An “important” piece of music you just don’t get: “Stairway To Heaven.” There are so many Led Zeppelin songs that are 10 times better.• An album you played or listened to incessantly: Barenaked Ladies’ Gordon. It makes me laugh every time. I never get sick of this album, and it brings back good college memories.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Loudon Wainwright III’s “Dead Skunk.” I found this song a couple years ago. It wasn’t a big hit, but I play it on my station. People seem to love it.

Here is the final group of Spring 2010 diary Arbitron ratings. With a few exceptions, only stations achieving at least a 1.0 share are included. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet, a “^” designates Country stations in the same market owned by a single operator and a “t” indicates a tie. A “NA” indicates a subscriber-only market, where rankings are not available, or a station programming another format during that ratings period. Client-exclusive ratings are embargoed from publication.

Music & Mornings (continued from page 1) Over the last year it has averaged six songs in the 6am and 7am hours and 13 songs in the 9am hour. It appears to have made an adjustment in the 8am hour, adding an extra two-three songs when compared to the latter part of ‘09.

Competitive PPM Markets Atlanta: Perennial Country leader WKHX has slightly increased the number of morning drive songs over the last year. It has gone from seven songs to eight in the 6am and 7am hours and from eight to nine in the 8am hour. It appears to have gone up from 12 to about 14 songs per hour in the 9am time frame. Competitor WUBL has also made a slight adjustment. It averaged

one-two songs an hour more than WKHX in mornings late last year and when ‘KHX added a song or two per hour, so did the Bull. A year ago, it aired eight or so songs in each of the first three morning drive hours. It looks like new clocks kicked in after the first of the year, with nine-ten songs airing per hour in that time frame. Its 9am hour has remained steady at 14-15 songs over the last year. Seattle: KMPS added two-four songs an hour following the Dec. 2009 departure of longtime morning personality Ichabod. From an average of seven tunes an hour in the 6am-8am hours a year ago, it now plays nine-10 songs each hour. KMPS has put the pedal to the metal in the 9am hour, leaping from 11-12 songs an hour with Ichabod to 18-19 songs an hour now. Crosstown, KKWF increased the number of songs it plays in morning drive following KMPS’ morning changes. A year ago, the Wolf played two-three songs an hour between 6-9am and bumped to 10-11 songs at 9am. Since Jan. 2010, KKWF has moved to five-six songs an hour between 6-9am and jumped to 16-17 songs an hour at 9am. Portland: KUPL also made a change in a long-running morning show, but kept its musical load relatively steady despite the changes. Wake-up personality Lee Rogers left last Dec. after 15 years. He regularly played seven-eight songs per hour from 6-9am and 15-16 after 9am. The new morning show now averages about one song per hour more 6am-9am. After 9am, however, KUPL is up to 18-19 songs an hour. Crosstown, KWJJ played seven-eight songs an hour a year ago and appears to have added about a song an hour over the first three hours of morning drive. It has always been in the 17-18 songs a 9am.

Pre-Currency PPM Markets WMIL/Milwaukee: There is more music per hour now than there was a year ago. Last fall, WMIL’s award-winning morning show averaged eight songs in the 6am, 7am and 8am hours. In June of this year, that number was pushed to nine-10. The 9am slot increased from 12 to 14. WWKA/Orlando: K92 also made some changes of late. Last fall, it played six songs an hour, like clockwork, in the first three hours of morning drive before bumping to 14 tunes an hour. Somewhere between Aug. 11 and Sept. 1 this year new clocks were put in that now have WWKA playing eight songs an hour for the first three hours and 15 songs an hour after 9am. WQDR/Raleigh: No changes here with PPM close to currency, as WQDR has maintained a steady diet of eight-nine songs an hour between 6am-9am. However, it appears to have added a couple songs an hour after 9am, increasing from 11 to 13.
