APPEAL FOR UNWANTED

KNITTING WOOL. If you have any unwanted knitting wool

(any colour) that you would like to donate

to help raise funds for Cancer Research

please call Mrs Hoff on 01302 842389.

Local collections can be arranged.

THANKYOU

Many thanks to everyone who helped with, or

attended and supported our Annual Garden

Party on 14th July.

Thankyou to all the stallholders, and to many

friends for helping to set everything up, and for

clearing away afterwards.

The day was most enjoyable and well attended

despite the threat of bad weather forcing our

decision to hold the event in Church.

(After much anxiety, and sleepless nights

watching every weather forecast; most of which

predicted heavy rain for mid afternoon Saturday,

the fateful decision was eventually taken late

Friday afternoon to once again hold the event in

Church).

Many people commented that they enjoyed

sitting in our beautiful Church and listening to

the Band, and Schools etc, and that they found

the atmosphere to be very friendly, though at

times slightly crowded!

The amount taken on the day was £2,474.01,

leaving an expected profit of £2,146.78 to go

towards General Church Funds, a magnificent

figure, and one raised entirely within 3 hours!

Thankyou to all those who donated prizes, and

items for the stalls. The final total is entirely due

to the kindness and generosity of so many of

our local (and some not so local) people.

A good days work, helping to ensure our church

will still be here in the foreseeable future.

P.S. Looking forwards to a less stressful and

SUNNY event next year!!

Once again THANKYOU!

NORTH EAST DONCASTER

CITIZENS ADVICE BUREAU

Advice column

Q. My children are starting at a new school this September and since the recession our

finances have been squeezed almost to breaking point already. Is there any help

available for things like buying school uniforms?

A. Citizens Advice’s Adding Up campaign was set up to challenge schools to help

families by following these simple recession-busting tips:

1. If you feel your child’s school isn’t doing enough to keep costs down, raise the issue with the

school management team. Draw their attention to the Schools Admissions Code, and keep copies

of all correspondence.

2. If you’re not happy with the response, approach the school’s governing body. They should have a

complaints procedure in place which will deal with issues such as complaints about uniform policies.

3. You can also raise the issue with the Schools Admissions Forum in your area. Your local

authority should be able to give you details.

4. If your school has an exclusive contract with a uniform supplier which prevents you from buying

‘off the peg’ items at a cheaper rate, ask them to review this.

5. If they refuse to change this policy then they may be subject to enforcement action by the Office

of Fair Trading: www.oft.gov.uk

6. If you are concerned that excessive school costs are affecting your decision to send your child to

a particular school then you can object to the Schools Adjudicator: www.schoolsadjudicator.gov.uk

7. Suggestions you can make to your child’s school for how to keep costs fair and low could include:

Making sure uniform is available from a range of outlets

Providing sew-on or iron-on badges that can be put on plain clothing Encourage second hand uniform sales or swap schemes

Providing budgets for the year in September so parents can plan ahead

Being transparent about which contributions are voluntary

8. If you are really struggling with buying school uniform or PE kit for your child(ren), apply to your

local authority for a School Uniform Grant.

9. If you have difficulties with any of the above steps your local Citizens Advice Bureau can help.

Many bureaux are already trying to influence the work of local Schools Admissions Forums as part

of our Adding Up campaign.

Go for Gold.

Further cementing our Twinning, Hatfield/Merksplas 2 of the teachers from Belgium and

their husbands were guest of ours for a short period, during which Mrs Helen Acton,

headmistress, of Hatfield Woodhouse primary invited the 5 of us down to her school to

view the show, "Go for Gold" the theme was the Olympics past and present,

concentrating mainly on the past ! Predominantly the show featured Year 6, but there

were contributions from both Year 5 and 3. The show was probably one of the best that I

have seen from such an age group and was carried throughout with superb clarity and

professionalism and at times it was very humorous! The Belgium guests were certainly

impressed, but let them tell you in their own words via a email that I received on their

return to Merksplas .

Lucky Belgians we were!

We were privileged to be witnesses to a beautiful show, mostly brought by the children of

Year 6. We were astonished about the fact that everything went so fluently, so disciplined

and so self-employed!

All the actors played their role very well ! Everyone knew quite good what they had to say

and what they had to do. We think that they have practiced a lot and they have practiced

good! We even think that England will have a new Daniel Radcliffe or Kate Winslet in a

couple of years, raised in Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School..

But not only the children of Year 6 have overwhelmed us, we also enjoyed listening to the

singers as much as seeing the acting. They all sang so lively, clear and beautiful. We loved

the songs ! Again we were impressed about the discipline and the responsibility the

children took.

For our opinion, the children who made part of the show........ "THEY HAVE EARNED

THE GOLD" !

Well that is praise indeed ! Excellent show and credit to all the school teachers and pupils

that were involved !

G. Harper.

ANIMAL CARE FOR THE FUTURE

15th -22nd September Rabbits are now the third most common pet but unfortunately many people are unaware of how to properly care for these active sociable animals. Evolution will be taking part in the national RAW in

September offering free consultations to promote bunny well being. HUTCHES Whether your rabbit lives indoor or outdoor hutches should be large enough to allow the rabbit to take several hops, and tall enough so they can stretch up on their hind legs. All rabbits need regular exercise to ensure good health. FEEDING Many of the problems we see originate from poor diet. Access to fresh water, lots of good hay and small amounts of good quality dry food such as Burgess Rabbit Excel is extremely important. Green foods such as food such as grass, carrot and swede should also be given daily but avoid fattening foods such as fruit and rabbit muesli type mixes. During RAW we will be offering money off vouchers for any Burgess Excel rabbit food bought in practice. GENERAL HEALTH You should check your rabbit at least once a week, paying particular attention to their teeth. During warmer weather it is important to check daily their back-end daily to ensure that the fur is not soiled otherwise rabbits become susceptible to flystrike. If your pet is prone to soft faeces it is always advisable to have them checked by a vet to make sure there are no underlying problems. VACCINATIONS Myxomatosis. We regularly treat animals infected with this disease which causes extreme suffering and is nearly always fatal! Biting insects such as mosquitoes and fleas spread this deadly virus, so any rabbit can catch it whether they live outdoors or in your home. It is always distressing to see animals affected by myxomatosis, especially when it can be easily prevented by routine vaccination. VHD. This is a viral disease that may be spread through the air. It causes sudden death and has no obvious symptoms, but can be protected against by routine vaccination. We now offer a combined annual vaccination that protects rabbits against both diseases. NEUTERING As is the case with cats and dogs, these routine operations will often mean that an individual rabbit is friendlier towards their owner and with female rabbits removes the considerable risk of uterine cancer and unwanted pregnancy. In nearly every case when rabbits are kept together they are more likely to be sociable if they have been spayed (females) and castrated (males).

and arts and crafts.

Jenny Haughan, Manager at Hatfield

Our First Year as Travis St Lawrence Primary School.

Our first year as a new school and what a year it has been! Each month the reporters

have brought you news of all the exciting activities and events; these have included Get

Your Grown Up Gardening, Whole School Sports’ Day, Science Fair and Open Gardens.

In addition, we have become a Sustrans bike- it school, experiencing bike-it breakfasts in

the bleakest of winter mornings!

Throughout the year, all the children have had the opportunity to participate in exciting

trips, some to the beach at Filey, others to hunt out the lions at Yorkshire Wildlife Park,

whilst others stepped back in time to work as a Victorian. In years 4, 5 and 6, many

children took part in a residential, either in Derbyshire (Years 4/5) or Kingswood (Year

6).

Also as a Church School, we joined in the celebrations of 200 years of church education.

On other occasions, we were extremely proud that this year the school achieved the

‘outstanding’ award for community gardening from ‘Yorkshire in Bloom’ and also the

status of being Parent Partnership school. Pause for breath!

Mrs Gibson concluded our first year by writing to parents to inform them of our

achievements and, in particular, to celebrate the academic results of the Year 6 children.

“Much has been achieved during this year and solid foundations have been laid for the

school’s future.

I am delighted to tell you that the end of year results were excellent with very significant

improvement from the previous Manor School results. 100% of the children achieved

Level 4 and above in English with 39% achieving Level 5. In Maths, 92% achieved Level 4

and above and 40% achieved Level 5. 92% of children achieved the key measure of Level 4

and above in both English and Maths. This is a 23% improvement on the previous year’s

results”…. “Key Stage One children again achieved highly and the school’s high standards

in Key Stage One were maintained”.

I’m sure you’ll agree this year has been a wonderful start and we look forward to

welcoming the next academic year with all the adventures and challenges it brings.

Hatfield Woodhouse Primary School News

August 2012

Hello there!

School is so quiet I can hear the hum of the computer server… there are no children here at all,

this being the middle of the summer holidays. For this reason it has been left to me to write the

article for this month’s Arrow to keep you all up-to-date with what has been happening at Hatfield

Woodhouse Primary School.

Our final week of term was full of highs and lows!

We were really pleased when local celebrity Tamsin Hobbs

(South Yorkshire’s Perfect Miss) came to school to present

tickets to go to Olympics events to Amy from Year 3 and

William from Year 4. Amy and William won the tickets in a

draw containing all the names of pupils with good attendance

at school this year. Amy and her family will be going to the

football at Old Trafford whilst William will be going to the

Paralympics Athletics in London. We congratulate them both

on winning their tickets and hope they have a wonderful

time. It will be amazing for them to look back in years to

come and say ‘I was at the 2012 Olympics!’

The bad weather during the last week of term unfortunately meant that our Sport Day had to be

cancelled for a second time. We will reschedule it for the Autumn term. However another event

which was more successfully rescheduled was our Father’s Day Picnic. The dads and granddads of

children in Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage joined their children for an afternoon of energetic

sporting and playground activities. We were delighted that South Yorkshire’s Perfect Miss -Tamsin

Hobbs, was also able to attend. The ice-cream van and a final football match between the dads, with

the children cheering them on, made the afternoon really special.

We said ‘Good-bye’ to our Year 6 class in a final assembly on Thursday where they showcased their

talents for us for the very last time. We were moved to tears by Jasmine and Molly’s gymnastic

dance routine and clapped along to Harry playing his drums for us. The children shared their

memories of their time at Hatfield Woodhouse and told us what they were looking forwards to at their new secondary schools.

I can’t wait for the new term here to begin. We will be welcoming both new teachers and pupils to

our happy school. There are lots of new and exciting experiences waiting for them to share …but

I’ll let our new reporters tell you more about those in September.

Enjoy what’s left of the summer!

Yours,

Helen Acton, Principal

Dunsville WI visit

The Black Country Museum Each year instead of its usual monthly meeting the

group takes the opportunity to get out and about in

August.

The destination of the trip is decided upon by

members and then arranged on their behalf by the

committee; it is always popular, with places being

allocated to members first and then family and

friends.

So, for 2012, WI members along with family and

friends enjoyed a great day out at The Black

Country Museum in Dudley.

After all the rain that we have had recently we set

out with hope in our hearts for a fine day and were

not disappointed as the sun shone for us all day long.

Time flew by as everyone explored the many

different aspects of this huge outdoor Museum.

The most popular attractions proved to be the many

shops and houses that had everyone saying “we had

one of those” or for the younger members “I

remember my granny having that”, a canal boat trip

through long dark narrow tunnels, traditional fish

and chips served on paper with no polystyrene

cartons in sight, lessons in the

schoolroom with the scary teacher and

the fairground, though no one dared to

venture on to the cake walk, and of

course the good old pub with real ale.

We now look forward to getting back

together as a whole group in September

so we can continue with our busy

calendar of meetings and events.

Hatfield Flyer Children’s Page Feature

Childcare Funding for 3 Year Olds

When your child turns 3 years of age they are entitled to a free nursery place in the term following their 3rd birthday. The government funds all local authorities to ensure that a free part time pre-school place is available to all families who have 3 and 4 year old children. This is called the Free Early Years Provision (FEYP). Small World Day Nursery is a registered provider of the FEYP and has been providing an excellent free early years education to 100’s of children since 2004. The nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which helps young children reach its early learning goals. The grant will allow a child to attend for 3 hours each day, 5 days a week, during term time. Due to the fact that Small World nursery is a private provider the FEYP can be accessed flexibly such as 5 hours a day for 3 days each week.

The FEYP is provided in the preschool facility at Small World Day

Nursery, in great hall of the original

barn at Townend Farm. There is

extensive equipment, activities and

toys to encourage the children’s

development through play. Politeness

and good manners are encouraged in

all children. Records are kept of

development in areas such as

personal and social development,

communication, language and literacy,

mathematics, knowledge and

understanding of the world, physical

and creative development.

For more information on this

please contact Small World Day

Nursery on 01302 844485.

Howzat! ‘The Difference’ is retiring! As a young lad growing up in a big family the summer holidays were understandably a time of great

fun and frolic. During those long hot days (they always were when we were kids I am sure) it would

be no surprise to mum and dad not to see much of their offspring as we enjoyed exploring the

countryside and getting up to all kinds of mischief. There was also an unwritten understanding that if we could join our friends for tea and get a free feed then this was classed as an added bonus. Don’t

get me wrong, the Wright clan were far from feral beasts, roaming the streets of Woodhouse

looking for free nosh, but passing up a genuine offer would be downright rude.

At that time of my life I hardly a refined connoisseur of fine dining and would have happily tucked

into Ken Smith’s sausages with homemade chips and covered in Oxtail soup on six of the seven days

of the week. In short, I was a fussy eater. Now before those who know me start questioning my

honesty in this tale let me explain. One evening my best friend Dean Fowler invited me to join him

and his extended family for supper – a gesture that was warmly appreciated after a hot day playing

football and an impromptu game of hide & seek at the village hall. I sat down and marvelled at the

wondrous smells emanating from his mum’s kitchen, salivating at the thought of free scran and the

pat on the back from my dad after foraging for myself. Sitting beside Dean’s Grandmother I cracked

a few funnies, told a few tall tales and basically made myself at home, something which was always

easy at the Fowler’s as they were such generous and hospitable hosts. Dean explained that his Gran

was having her “special supper” that evening so, trying to maintain the charm offensive, I declared

that if it was good enough for Dean’s Gran then it was good enough for me. I was flying without

wings, “well done my son,” I thought to myself this dinner party chit chat was easy.

Supper was served, looking and smelling like a million dollars and I wasted no time as I tucked into

what looked like an exotic beef stew. I’d nearly finished my plate and was already thinking of

seconds as I tried to catch my host’s eye and Mmm’ed my approval. It was at this point Dean’s

churlish grin caught my eye and he explained that Cow’s heart had always been his Gran’s favourite

tea-time treat! The realisation hit me like a shot of adrenalin as I rewound through a bowl of this

cow’s heart concoction. That’s right, cow’s heart. Not it’s rump or another more refined region, its

ticker. Suddenly my cutlery felt heavy as my brain began to fight back against my tastebuds who had

been duped. I suddenly realised that scrounging your supper sometimes took you to places you

didn’t expect. I finished my plate in silence, with a little less vigour than I had started before thanking

Dean’s mum “a lovely tea” but I had to head off as it was my turn to feed the goats. I cycled home

bemused at the thought of what I had consumed and vowing that in future when attempting to

muscle in on a free tea I would check the menu. I have remained friends with Dean over the years

and recently contacted him with a favour to ask (Something that is an occupational hazard when you

are a successful businessman). I explained how this year is my final season playing for Hatfield Town

Cricket Club and that I was now involved in helping the next generation of young cricketers. Yes, I

had the cheek to ask Dean and his family to sponsor the juniors for the purchase of some club

cricket caps and he very kindly offered to help.

Pictured are the Hatfield Town CC Under 13s proudly wearing these new club caps which were

presented to them at the recent Lads v Dads match. Although I have always avoided making my

articles obvious vehicles of promotion I must state that I was so happy when Fowlers offered to

sponsor these young lads and they deserve a huge thank you.

Over the last few years I have come to realise that I am no longer able to recover after a game

quite as quickly (by Thursday) as I used to and I always vowed that I would never become an old

man ignorant to the fact that it was time to let a younger, more enthusiastic and nimble, cricketer

take my place. Therefore on September 15th 2012 I intend to play my last competitive cricket match for Hatfield Town CC. This should be at home to Rothwell from Leeds and I sincerely hope I can go

out on a high and that the sun shines. I may help out on the odd occasion but I now aim to

concentrate on helping with the junior teams, fundraise for a new pavilion and become an umpire

I am not one to crow but for a short fat bloke with no neck, over the last 30 years I have been one

hell of bowler for the HTCC. Taking over 120 wickets in the last 4 seasons in the Pontefract League,

having a bowling average of 5.1 in the 2008/09 season, a top score of 65 against Bawtry, best figures

of 9 for 23 and being part of league winning side on at least five occasions, I can look back with

pride. However, all things must come to an end and so I would now like to take this opportunity to

name my all-time top HTCC XI. Please do not be upset if you do not make it on to my list.

1) Andy Cutts (Skipper) 2) Christopher Stothard

3) Nicky Page 4) Darren Sides

5) Malc Griffin 6) Ellis Patterson

7) Steve Robins (Wk) 8) Jeff Dinsdale

9) Patrick Platt 10) Gary Mann

11) Darren Harper

Most of those listed will mean nothing to the vast majority of Arrow readers, I just wanted to have

the opportunity to pick my HTCC dream team. Special mention must go to John Severn, Alan Bar-

nes, Harry Eland, Ivor Richards and Neil Allen.

If any parents reading this article would like to run an Under 11’s cricket team next summer then I

would love to help out and make things run smoothly. Please get in touch and we can continue to

grow the junior section of the club. If anyone has won the lottery and needs an excuse to spend

some cash then I would love to help them build a new pavilion for the club. I would love nothing more than to see Hatfield with a thriving cricket club that the town can be proud of. Also congratu-

lations to Hatfield Main CC for getting to 100 years not out! I miss our derby games and hope that

one day they will return.

In the words of the great Vinny Jones “It’s been emotional”. And where else would you get to sit in

an away changing room discussing what special power you would choose if you could have one and

what cream buns would have as fingers with a group of so-called adults as the rain fell on the pavil-

ion roof. Finally, once again, my sincere thanks to my HTCC team mates

and Dean, Peter, Carol and Ryan Fowler for being good friends and for

sponsoring the club caps for our young lads, I really do appreciate it and

so do all the team.

HATFIELD WOODHOUSE AMATEUR

GARDENING SOCIETY (HWAGS)

In a different vein from the Society's usual type of meeting, a group of members

went to David Chappell's farm at Boston Park in mid July.

David took us on a tour of the farm, and told us about the environmental projects

that the farm are involved in. He took us down into the fields and showed us

how he is practising farm stewardship and the differences it is making to his land.

After the tour we went to see the rare breeds and finished off in the lovely new

tea room. The farm is now a tourist attraction with its Maize Maze (one of the

first in the country), Bale Pyramid, Mini Maze, as well as the rare breeds and

tearooms.

This was an extremely enjoyable and informative visit.

At the beginning of August we went to the second day of the Bakewell Show.

This is a very large Agricultural Show which takes place almost in the centre of

Bakewell. There was a multitude of of events going on in the two large Show

Rings, as well as many events in the marquees. Of particular interest to our

Society was the Bakewell Horticultural Society's Show, which features many

classes similar to those in our own Shows in Hatfield Woodhouse.

Despite a couple of very heavy showers in the afternoon, where everybody

suddenly found something to see in the marquees, we all enjoyed an excellent

day out.

The next BIG EVENT for the Society is the Autumn Show on Saturday 8

September at Hatfield Woodhouse Working Men's Club. The Show will be open

to the public at 2pm with the

presentation of trophies at about 3pm,

followed by the auction of unclaimed

exhibits.

But before that, we have the first

meeting of the the new season on

September 4 August, when our speaker

will be Lee Plevey of Plevey's Landscapes.

Doncaster Advanced Motorists

Dear readers,

Ice and Snow. Avoid driving in extremely wintry conditions, is any journey really worth the risk?

Only in extreme cases are motorways affected by settling snow. Usually snowploughs and gritter

lorries keep them clear. However, slip roads and hard shoulders don’t always get the same

treatment, so take extra care.

Also be aware that bridges are particularly susceptible to re-freezing and black ice.

In sub-zero conditions drive at a safe speed, allow extra braking distance and make extra smooth

steering and braking actions to avoid unsettling your vehicle.

If you have to travel in extreme conditions, ensure you have plenty of fuel, take a shovel, spare

warm clothes and other essential supplies like water to drink. In extreme winter conditions, drive as

if you are walking on eggs!

Stay in a high gear and don’t make any sudden inputs as these may cause a slide.

The left-hand lane carries most traffic, so is likely to be the most clear of snow and ice.

Stay there as much as possible. Do not put your wheels on, or try to drive through the lines of slush

and ice that collect between lanes.

Strong Winds. Cross winds and turbulence can severely unsettle your car and even change your

direction of travel. Prepare for strong, unsettling winds when you drive on to a flyover or viaduct

where protective embankments disappear. Driving past HGVs at speed has a similar effect. Be aware

of the effects of strong winds on motorcycles and other vehicles like high-sided lorries, vans and caravans. Give them a wide birth, plan your overtake away from the high risk conditions and

consider leaving the middle lane as a “buffer zone”. Take extra care when driving flat-sided vehicles

like vans, people carriers and 4x4s. Grip the steering wheel firmly and be ready to counter the

unsettling ‘deflection’ when you pass an HGV.

When changing lanes in poor weather look extra carefully in your mirrors for vehicles travelling

without lights on. As soon as conditions clear remember to turn off your fog lights. It’s an offence to

leave them on in good visibility or at night when your headlights would be adequate. Avoid over-use

of fog lights and driving lights. Their high-intensity beams may blind other road uses in clear

conditions.

Only use rear fog lights in extreme conditions as they can be dazzling and annoying. They might also

mask the fact that your brake lights have come on.

Be aware that fog lights may cancel when full-beam is used.
