REFLECTING WITH THE PASTOR

THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 2ND

THE NORMAL HOURS OF 8:30AM TO 4:30PM

WILL RESUME TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 3RD.

“OBSERVING HIM CAREFULLY…”

Today the Pharisees are observing Jesus carefully. They weren’t interested in understanding His message and becoming His disciples. They were opposed to His message of love for all, compassion for all, the Kingdom of God was for all. They wanted to find something, anything they could use to justify condemning Him. Unfortunately, our society, leaders, families, and fellow parishioners, co-workers, neighbors etc. do the same thing. We only want to see, lift up and point out what is wrong with someone. Once we label a person and point out “their fault” we feel justified in cutting them out of our lives or only seeing that part of the person. We are not open to seeing anything else… changing our minds… admitting we are wrong.

Human pride is at work. The ego jumps to the front of the line and demands to have all its needs met. I… You… are the center of the universe. Or so we think. We are the Pharisees! Whether we like it or not. Jesus knows the game and offers us some practical wisdom which adds up to, ”Don’t embarrass yourself. Don’t sit at the head of the table, thinking you’re the most important person in the room, only to be publicly escorted to a lower seat.” This is just common etiquette. Once Jesus has softened up the crowd… they’re shaking their heads in agreement… He hits them with the real point: Don’t always invite your in-group against whom you are always measuring yourself, but measure yourself against the less fortunate. In essence… let your heart, your charity, your compassion and your assistance move beyond the people who can pay you back. God’s mercy, love, peace, justice and compassion rains on everyone. Everyone may not accept it or want it… but it is offered freely.

Who is hungry that you can feed? Who is treated with disrespect that you can lift up? Who is gossiped about or put down that you can encourage? Who do you try to control instead of equip to improve their lives and restore their dignity? Who do you judge as inferior instead of seeing them as a child of God?

We all have a place at the banquet table of God. We all have a dignity that no one can take away from us. We all can listen to different voices and opinions in order to grow in our own knowledge of what God is really asking of us.

Yes, observe Jesus carefully. Then when you have discovered how He loves and treats everyone the same…observe your own actions. When people observe you… will they see Jesus?

HELP NEEDED FOR SUNDAY COMMUNION AT CHESTERWOOD

We need two to four more volunteers to help with Sunday Communion at the Chesterwood Retirement Community. It is a wonderful ministry serving the elderly in our parish. The commitment is one Sunday, every six weeks. There are 9:30am services each Sunday held at two different buildings on the campus. Volunteers are needed from 9:00-10:30am for transporting some of the residents between their rooms and the Chesterwood chapel, assisting with the service, distributing communion and returning some of the residents back to their rooms. If you feel called to this wonderful ministry or would like more information, please contact Jim & Chris Cartledge at [email protected] or 513-728-1709.

HERE WE GO STEELERS! HERE WE GO!

Yes, I know it is strange to cheer for the Steelers in Bengals country. Since my roots go back to Pittsburgh, I, for better or worse, follow the Steelers and support them. For the past several years, I have invited other Steelers fans to help me put a basket together for St. Susanna Festival. I always donate two tickets for the Bengals/Steelers game in Paul Brown Stadium. If any Steelers fans at St. Susanna would like to donate an item for the basket this year, that would be fantastic. Please begin dropping off your donation to the parish office. Make sure you identify the object for the Steelersbasket and mark it to the attention of Fr. Bob. Thank you in advance for sharing your spirit and enthusiasm for the Steelers.

SAVE THE DATE!

“Journey: Where to? A Refugee Camp Simulation Experience” at St. Susanna Parish, Saturday, October 19th Volunteers needed from 7:45am - Noon, lunch is provided

This active, hands-on educational opportunity allows a glimpse of the obstacles faced by refugees fleeing from places like Bhutan, Burundi, Eritrea, Syria, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

We are looking for adults willing to come and help us as VOLUNTEERS. Will you join us? You will be assigned a role to play in the Refugee Camp during the simulation. The roles include tasks like border patrol, registering refugee families, and distributing food and water. Detailed instructions will be shared via email prior to the simulation. Volunteering is an excellent opportunity to learn about the refugee experience. You need no special knowledge or skills … just a willingness to enter into your role with enthusiasm! Register to VOLUNTEER online at: www.stsusanna.org/ourglobalfamily.

Registration for participants will be available in September. Stay tuned! Questions? Contact Cabrina Attal at [email protected] or Mary Jo Burns at [email protected].

SLEEPING MATS FOR THE HOMELESS Tuesday, September 18th at 6:30pm in the St. Susanna Cafeteria.

Learn how to make sleeping mats for the homeless - no experience needed! Before you throw away that plastic grocery bag, consider this: It could be helping the homeless get a better night’s sleep. Join fellow parishioners in learning how to make “plarn” (plastic yarn) and crochet it into a sleeping mat. The advantage of using plarn is that it keeps individuals off the ground, which can be cold and damp. Plarn also provides for additional comfort.

IMMIGRATION REFORM LETTER CAMPAIGN

Archbishop Schnurr is encouraging the parishes in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati to address some of the recent immigration issues facing our country. He is asking parishioners to reach out to their elected officials to make changes to our broken immigration system. You can find sample letters here: www.catholiccincinnati.org/ministries-offices/catholic-social-action/calendar-events. The contact information for your elected officials can be found here: www.catholiccincinnati.org/ministries-offices/catholic-social-action/find-your-elected-officials.

Parishioners can also pick up copies to sign. Letters are located in the Gathering Space and on the table next to the elevators. Along with the letters are marked bins for completed letters to be placed in. Please have letters returned by September 11th. The goal is to have the letters arrive close to when Congress returns from their summer recess.

My son, conduct your affairs with humility, and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.

Sirach 3:17

should strive for, the greatness he offers us. Humility makes us capable of true and lasting greatness—just look at Christ.

—Fr. Mark Haydu, LC

For ReflectionHow well do I know myself—both my strengths and weaknesses?

Do I see everything as a gift and respond with humility?

September 1, 2019Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time (C)Sir 3:17–18, 20, 28–29Heb 12:18–19, 22–24aLk 14:1, 7–14

The Power of Humility

Humility isn’t a popular virtue! In fact, among the Greeks

and the Romans it wasn’t considered a virtue at all. In a sixth-century bc list of 147 wise maxims, humility isn’t even mentioned. For the ancient Greek or Roman, obtaining and defending honor was more a goal than humility ever could be.

Yet the Jewish faith values humility, as seen in Old Testament texts like the one we read today. The humble strength of conducting affairs quietly and justly makes you more loved—more so than someone who gives many gifts. Parents should reflect on this.

As Christians following a Savior who was great through his service, humility is not only recommended but becomes the ideal. Let the first be last. Let the greatest be the servant. Humility is simply living the truth of who you are. You are both great and insignificant. We can and should use all our knowledge and strength to sow the fields of creation, as in this painting. But only God gives growth.

Humility is favored by true self-knowledge. We are creatures and not the Creator. We don’t make the rules of life or define right and wrong. We discover, accept, and love these laws. A healthy awareness of our limitations doesn’t enslave us. It sets us free. A humble knowledge of the truth is empowering.

We are amazingly talented people, each uniquely loved and gifted by God. Each of us can achieve, and
