The Grateful LivingRock-n-roll groups and race horses havetwo things in common sweat and weirdnames. You may remember the unusualname of one such rock band The GratefulDead. I praise God that believers are thegrateful living and no longer dead in
trespasses and sins. My heart is so full ofgratitude for our alive-in-Christ churchfamily and particularly our sta who pulledo the biggest surprise of my ministry. I wastotally shocked to walk into the services
and to be given a huge birthday surprise and celebrationof my forty years of pastoral ministry. I have never seen somany people keep such a secret for so long! Our GovernmentIntelligent Agencies could learn a lot from you. Thanks youfor your labor of love.
I say with Paul, I will not presume to speak of anythingexcept what Christ has accomplished through mein thepower of the Spiritand thus I aspire to preach the gospel(Romans 15:18-20). One of my prayers has been that Janetand I can serve the Lord through His church for many moreyears. I have no interest in retiring but rather in rering. I donot want to slow down but to pick up the pace, look up to theLord, watch out for the devil, and get on with the business ofgrowing disciples, reaching the lost, and nish out my race (2
Timothy 4:7).
I am so grateful for the hundreds of cards telling yourtestimonies of Gods grace. I love you and am privileged toserve the Lord together. I am particularly grateful for yourlove for my children and grandchildren and for how you havemodeled scriptural unity and harmony. Please keep prayingfor us.
Christian living equals laboring, as in visitation-evangelism,
the daily discipline of the quiet time, faithful working in ourBible & Life Groups, and other service. May we say, I laboraccording to His working which works in me mightily(Colossians 1:29). God will energize you to nd His will, tofollow His direction, and to fulll His purposes, as you reportfor duty daily and are not weary in well doing (Galatians 6:9).
If you were able to be in the Saturday and Sunday worshipservices last week during the celebration, you heard polaropposites in Dr. Ken Whitten and Mr. Chuck Colson. Youheard the pastor of one of our nations greatest churcheswith a down-home, southern accent as well as the brilliantMassachusetts lawyer-politician-convict-reformer-apologist.God uses all kinds. As the old preacher said, he has even hita straight lick with this crooked stick (me, that is). I hope thatyou can identify with me in this statement: I am not all that Ishould be, but neither am I what I was, or what I will be whenI see Christ. Thanks, Lord.

Systematic TheologyDigging DeeperA Theology Class for Women
Begins Thursday, September 9
After a wonderful semester of the study Systematic
Theology by almost 50 women this past winter,
we shall resume our study this fall. Using the same
textbook, The Moody Handbook of Theology
by Dr. Paul Enns, we will complete our study as we
explore other important categories of theological
study including:
* Biblical theology (the study of Christian theology dealing systematically with
the historical progress of the self-revelation of God in the Bible);
* Historical theology (the study of Christian theology as it has unfolded through
the centuries);
* Dogmatic theology (the study of Christian theology as it deals with doctrinal
truth of Scripture in a systematic way, and more particularly with that truth as it
is confessed by the Church);
* Contemporary theology (the study of Christian theology as seen in current
theological thought and movements).
Even if you were not present for the rst unit of Systematic Theology study, you
are welcome to attend this class, which will be taught by Janet Wicker and Vina
Sterrett. There is a requirement for personal study and faithfulness to
attendance of each class which will begin September 9th and conclude on
November 18th, at 6:30 p.m. in room WC117. Each class lasts two hours and the
textbook is available at our FBCN Lighthouse Bookstore.
To conrm your participation in this class, please contact
Sandy at 596-8600 x261 or email [email protected].

Scripture Study by Janet Wicker
Join us this fall as we read the book and study the scriptures aboutan issue that affects every woman, regardless of her profession,credentials, possessions, or attributes. The issue of insecurity hasbecome epidemic among women, but it is not incurable. This journeyto authentic security will cause us to identify the lies from the worldserroneous belief system that have infected and paralyzed us as weallow the truth of God to scream louder to our souls in liberation.
Each week you will be given chapter assignments to read in thebook along with scripture study and directed prayer times. When we
join with other women each week in small table discussion, we willwork through the issues and focus on Gods Word together in studyand prayer, followed by group study and teaching led by ourSenior Pastors wife, Janet Wicker.

will get us through all the hard spots, all our
decisions, all our roles, all our times we cant
hold open our eyelids, and the times were
bursting with joy. Gods hand guides us as we guide our children!
