“A Man of Issachar”Knowledge has a volitional as well as anintellectual aspect. In other words, we mustnot only know right but do what is right. As wecontinue to be “salt” and “light” in this culture,we must “overcome evil with good” (Romans12:21). As we “cling to what is good” (Romans
12:9), we must also “do good” (Psalm 37:3). Soevangelical Christians are not a “religious right”but those who do righteousness. This is notbased on a sense of moral superiority but deep
humility and being like the men of Issachar who “understood thetimes, with knowledge of what Israel should do” (1 Chronicles12:32).
Our pulpit guest this weekend, Dr. Richard Land, is such a
man. We welcome him again and are grateful that for over twodecades he has served as President of our Southern Baptist Ethicsand Religious Liberty Commission. I can still remember whenSouthern Baptists had drifted to the left concerning the greatmoral and ethical challenges of our times. I was embarrassedthat we had not spoken out and taken a stand on the issue of abortion, religious pluralism, euthanasia, and many other issues. However, with the “Conservative Resurgence” in 1979, ourtrustees and Baptists messengers changed the direction of all of
our institutions, and elected Dr. Land. We prophetically begansharing with our nation how we can recover the values of ourforefathers and, most importantly, our Heavenly Father.
Dr. Land has represented evangelicals before Congress, USPresidents, and served as Commissioner of the U.S. Commissionon International Religious Freedom. He reminds us that theissue is not being a red or a blue stater. In his book, The DividedStates of America, he recalls us to pay the price for a third “Great
Awakening” by repentance of sin, turning from “the currenterosion of our values and the coarsening of our culture,” andrestoring our moral, ethical, and civil “guardrails.”
Richard reminds us that we must zealously protect not only “thefreedom of worship” but also the “freedom of religion.” He recallsGeorge Washington’s letter to a Jewish Synagogue in 1790 thatour rights to worship are not just a matter of “toleration,” as it wasin Europe, but a basic and fundamental right in this new nation
which could not be taken away. Eternal vigilance can keep usgrateful and faithful in preserving liberty and honoring God.
Hear Dr. Land with an open mind and heart. Gain a new“understanding of the times” as a citizen. Pray, vote, and getinvolved. Come to the Sunday evening time of dialogue withthis great spokesman who has not only a degree from Princetonbut also a Doctorate of Philosophy from Oxford. “To arms!”
