President’sreport

Hi,Communication.Whenone’scomputer‘electronics’letyoudown,onethenrealiseshowdependantweareonthismechanism,intoday’ssociety.I’mnow‘online’-thankgoodnessforawarranty!BestWishestoyouallforthe2011Year. We are still in a cautious/ tight times ahead. It’s a MUST we SUPPORT each other in our line of business. If you have your own Business - PLEASE FORWARD your communication details for our “LURE NEWS” usage to all our Club Members to consider their SUPPORT. This will be - Free of charge :- Email : [email protected]

Now focusing on fishing - the major purpose of our Club; please be cau-tious at the Taieri River Bar - chang-es each week; due to the weather patterns. The Salmon in our Dunedin Harbour is reaping dividends - numerous catches reported by young and old, both ‘on the water’ and ‘off the the wharves’ either at Port Chambers or the Dunedin City Wharf. Best Wishes to our Club Teams that have entered the ‘Nationals’ on both the Dunedin Coast and our Haast West Coast. Hope the weather is favourable to our teams this Year. Those that fish from our Smaills Beach; we have “key” access on the Club Tractor and a spare in the Club. The Dunedin City Council have issued keys; compliments of the Mathieson Family; for our Club Member direct access to the beach. It’s sad loss to our Club in having a friend and a ‘colourful’ member like Jerry Cook passing away - Our Club sympathies, prayers and thoughts go out to the families.

Thanks for those that donate ‘time’ and needs to the Club e.g John Miller & Warren Mathieson in repair-ing the Conservatory back wall and Alan Duncan in donating numerous beer handles. Our first Club Event for the 2011 Year - SUMMER SIZZLE ; proved to be a huge success. Thanks to our new Social Manager Mark Lundin and his Team for staging a tremen-dous event. It’s not very often where you experience the band’s first song, where the dance floor is full. Experts in the Music World, that attended, were amazed with the Band’s skills. YES the Club ‘rocked’ like never before. At this event we introduced the ef-fpos facility - due to the success; we are keeping for ongoing usage. Welcome to new members:- Craig Foster, Alan Duncan, Peter Innes-Jones, Kim Garrett, Dave Wil-son, Kate Bardwell, Dan Cockroft, Don Cuttance, Cameron Holmes, Barry Lewis & Family, Phil White & Family - Enjoy and make the Most of what the Club Offers.

New Scales have been purchased in updating our Club needs @ our base; Haast location and for other fishing events in our district lakes and rivers. A reminder to all - When using our Bar facilities - PLEASE CLEAR UP AFTER YOU ! Take PRIDE in the premises. Thanks to those that sup-port the Club Bar. Our Committee have various events ahead; some ‘posted’ on the Club Notice Board - Take Note & keep the dates Free. AS ALWAYS keep those LINES TIGHT ! Cheers, Brett

LURE FEBRUARY 2011

Club .22 Gun Shoot - A Great Club event - Well organized by Club Chief Weigh Master, Russell Moylan, & the Dunedin Smallbore Club. Our Club thanks must also go to Nick Hutton, the official scorer for the afternoon.Attendance was ‘high’ and enjoyed by all. Our Club Foundation Member, Ron Johnston, said he couldn’t see the targets but registered higher scores than most; while Russell seemed to target the roof on a few occasions !! The “Sharp Shooter” of the Mathieson Family is Leanne ( fantastic scores ), followed by sons James & William. Next time Warren you have to shoot a troublesome possum on the farm; perhaps leave the task to Leanne or your boys !!!!Murray Muir hasn’t been to a Club Shoot for a few years, as Lynne showed him how to shoot high scores on the pre-vious occasions - nothing has changed - Lynne is still the Muir Family “Sharp Shooter” !! Perhaps Murray, take Lynne out Duck Shooting this season !! Brett Bensemann, Nathan Pitcher & Kate Bardwell, after ‘poor’ practice scores; redeemed themselves when the final scores mattered; while Grant Hutton, Warren Joyce, Phil Seque, Peter Innes-Jones, Kris Seque & Susan Evans were producing consistent good scores. Smallbore ‘open sight’ shooting was Ian Reeves forte while the his ‘Tele sight’ Shooting was ‘off’ - therefore letting others gain the ‘spoils’ !

Results: Smallbore ‘open sight’ Men Women JuniorIan Reeves -90.1 Pts Leanne Mathieson - 96.4 Pts James Mathieson - 66.1 PtsGrant Hutton -89 Pts Lynne Muir - 83Pts William Mathieson - 21 PtsWarren Joyce - 87.1 Pts Susan Evans - 79 PtsPhil Seque - 85.1 Pts Peter Innes-Jones - 82.1 Pts Smallbore ‘Tele sight’ Men Women JuniorPhil Seque - 81 Pts Leanne Mathieson - 75.1 Pts James Mathieson - 29 PtsPeter Innes-Jones - 74 Pts Lynne Muir - 62 Pts William Mathieson - 22 PtsGrant Hutton - 71.1 Pts Susan Evans - 36 PtsWarren Joyce - 69.1 PtsRon Johnston - 60 Pts Next Year - It’s ALL ON !!

Big Mako - Light Line. From the Bay of Islands “Eldorado” tournament - is news of a mako shark weighing 324 kg caught. The fight lasted 5 1/2 Hrs. 5 kg short of the current world record, and a new ‘NZ record’ clam for a Mako caught on a 10 kg line - a tremendous effort ! TV Fishing sensation Matt Watson has another ‘first’ to ‘crow’ about on television. Fishing from the ves-sel ‘Cova Rose’, they went out for a Broadbill drift off the Greymouth coast. They soon landed a 205 kg Broadbill; believed to be the first recreationally caught Broadbill for the West Coast of South Island.

NZ anglers are Singing the Blues !!There seems to be a good number of these ocean speeders out wide, from Waihau Bay. Tukukaka have weighed 6 Blue Marlin over 227 kg ( 500 lbs ) in the last week, with two over 300 kg. Invitation.Broken Bay GFC ( Sydney ), is run-ning it’s 50th Anniversary Tourna-ment on 18th - 20th March. They extend an invitation to all major NZ Game Fishing Club Members to join them in their celebrations. They have outstanding facilities and can ar-range boat charters & accommoda-tion for anglers. GROPER SAMPLING

Involves The University of Otago & NIWA. Main aim is to improve Groper Production in Aquaculture – Comparing wild and captive fish.Samples are needed from wild caught Groper. These most important samples are weight, length & blood. Blood sampling needs to be taken as soon as the fish comes out of the wa-ter, so that it would not clot, rendering it use-less for the analysis. Blood samples also need to be kept on ice ( not frozen; just refriger-ated ).Weigh & Measure the Groper at any time of day. Also they would like to take some gonad sam-ples before the fish are gutted. Again these samples to be kept on Ice. Tubes for the blood, measuring boards or tapes and scales will be provided For the 6 – 8 Month analysis the number of Groper samples needed is 40 to 100. A full report will be presented to our members at completion of analysis. In fact an evening is being planned, with various speakers of inter-est. To encourage people and a contribution to our Club; The University of Otago & NIWA are will-ing to pay $20 per fish. Therefore it is only fair that this amount is split 50/50 - $10 to the boat & $10 to the Club. If you are interested/able to help, and or need more information; please contact Brett Ben-s e m a n n , 4 5 5 7 5 9 2 o r [email protected]
