From the ED’s desk

New van has arrived

I know winter is coming as I just put my snow tires on my car, it was early this year for me, however I now work in the “snow belt” and I have heeded the warnings of my staff!

Well, the Ford government is starting to shape what the province will look like over the next four years. So far very little has an impact on the developmental services sector; however time will tell what direc-tion his government will take this sector. We still have not been advised if Stabilization funding we received this year will be fiscal or annualized, if it is not annualized it will have far reaching repercussions on Community Living Dufferin (CLD). The Ford government is repealing much of Bill 148 and only time will tell if that has a positive or negative ef-fect on CLD.

We are moving in the direction of launching Social Enterprise(s) opportunities for the people we support. Social En-terprise is a form of business which helps people we support become their “own boss” and gives back to the commu-nity in which it operates. We have started off small taking baby steps, we have just launched our e commerce site to sell hand crafted products people we support have made. So if you have not already, go to our website commu-nitylivingdufferin.ca, click on the “SHOP” and shop to our hearts content. We will be adding additional items for sale over the next several months.

One thing that has become very evident since I started at CLD is how supportive the community is and its willing-ness to partnership with CLD. In other communities the “red tape” to get anything done goes on and on forever, to the point you forget what you wanted to partner on!

The community of Dufferin is totally different, “ask for and you shall receive” and quickly! I am pleasantly surprised by how supportive and fast people make decisions to get project(s) that ultimately help the people we support off the ground!

We are in discussions with the Town of Orangeville and the County of Dufferin on two very exciting Social Enterprise opportunities.

The Board of Directors are starting to work on CLD’s new Strategic Plan that will guide this agency for the next 3 to 4 years, exciting times!

In the recent municipal elections two of our Board members were successful in their goal to hold office in Orange-ville, Andy McIntosh was elected deputy mayor and Lisa Post was elected to a councillor position, congratulations to both of them!

On a final note, drive safely and keep warm during this most wonderful time of the year!

Earlier this month our beautiful new van arrived to much

excitement from all of us here. We thank once again the

generous donor who helped to ensure this purchase for

the people we support.

Employment Spotlight ~ Brandon Hall

Brandon Hall has been employed at Community Living Dufferin as a valued member of our janitorial team

since March of 2017.

Brandon works every Tuesday and Friday making sure the

building is clean and maintained for visitors and staff. His

duties consist of cleaning all the bathrooms (i.e.; wiping

down the toilets and counter areas, changing the garbage

and mopping the floor), he also mops the front hallways to

ensure that the building looks presentable.

In addition to being employed by CLD Brandon also works

with a private cleaning company, working once a month

cleaning four apartments. His duties consist of vacuuming,

mopping, dusting and wiping down hand rails for the ten-

ants.

Brandon likes to keep busy, and this past July and August

he worked at Dufferin Child and Family Services filling in

for their maintenance/janitorial worker. While at DCAFs

Brandon’s duties consisted of cleaning the bathrooms, dust-

ing all shelves and cubicles, vacuuming all carpeted areas

and using a floor machine to clean the floors. Brandon was

there 4 hours a day from Monday-Friday.

Brandon has also attended training sessions that we have

offered here at CLD, successfully completing First Aid and

CPR training, as well as a boundary and social media train-

ing program.

Brandon is an outstanding worker who is always ready and

willing to take on new tasks when they pop up. He works

hard from the beginning of his shift until the very end and we know that the CLD staff at the main office

appreciate his diligence in keeping the building clean and tidy.

Keep up the great work Brandon!

Michael L retired from QPAC in September and to mark the special occasion he was joined by his coworkers

and friends in the Community Room to celebrate with a delicious BBQ lunch and cake.

Since retiring, he has found shuffleboard one activity he is enjoying and is getting to be quite the competitive

player. He is also keeping active swimming, attending seniors functions at the centre, helping around the

house and going out for lunch on Friday’s. Congratulations Michael and keep enjoying retirement.

Board of Directors news

Municipal elections see two of our Board members elected

We offer our sincere congratu-

lations to two of our Board

members elected to office in the

recent Municipal election in Or-

angeville.

Deputy Mayor Andy Macintosh

and councillor Lisa Post will

join five other new council

members for the next four

years.

Congratulations to all who ran

for office in their communities.

After nine years of valued support as Treasurer on our Board Chris Mudge has

retired.

Chris’ expertise in finance was an indispensable asset. Her respectful collabo-

ration with our Finance Director Alex Rowe meant that she was able to suc-

cinctly relay information to her fellow board members and answer any ques-

tions they may have asked.

While she steps down from the board we are very grateful that she will for the

present time, remain sitting on our finance committee.

At this point in time we are looking for two individuals to join our current

Board.

If you might be interested please contact Robert Bingham or Karen Murphy-

Fritz for additional information. 519.941.8971 [email protected]

The evening of Thursday October 18th, ED Robert Bingham and

Board member Lisa Post attended the Dufferin Board of Trade

Business Excellence Awards at the Orangeville Agricultural

Centre.

CLD were nominated along with Amaranth Lions, Bethell Hos-

pice, Family Transition Place, Orangeville Police Service, Shel-

burne Christmas Hamper Program, and Streams Community

Hub for Association of the Year which recognizes a non-profit

association that has made an outstanding contribution to the

social, cultural or economic well-being of Dufferin County.

While we did not win the award it was a wonderful opportunity

for Lisa to introduce Robert to the many local business leaders

in our community.

We offer congratulations to Family Transition Place for the win.

For the past eight years we’ve been sur-

rounded by empty fields but that all changed

this year when Tire Discounter relocated

from Orangeville to become our neighbours.

For the past year (November 2017) we have

watched the busy build that sometimes

shook our building literally with awe at its

sheer size. Occupying 158,000 square feet to

the East of CLD we look forward to having

them as neighbours.

Give a Christmas

Welcome new neighbours

CLD supports people to live independently (Supported Independent Living - SIL

program).

Like everyone at Christmas, basic incomes are stretched during the holidays. For

an individual who receives a monthly Ontario Disability Support Program cheque

after paying rent, they are left with money for utilities, food, clothing, & personal

products with nothing leftover. Most must rely on the food bank to ensure nutrition is met.

During the holidays we endeavor to assist people to budget for the additional expenses that Christ-

mas brings.

Our Give a Christmas campaign brings joy to people whose need at Christmas is the greatest.

Please consider assisting us in this campaign by donating gift cards for local grocery stores, cards

from local retail stores can provide warm clothing, personal hygiene and perhaps a couple of little

extras not normally affordable.

Funscrip Gift Card order form.

CLD offers gift cards to purchase from many retailers, see over for full list.

You get the full value of the gift cards you buy, while helping us to fundraise.

We receive a donation from Funscrip valued between 2 - 10% on the purchase of these gift cards.

Cash or cheque only, payment due with order, return order form/payment to CLD to the attention
