Semifinalists (left to right) Deepak Kumar, Apshara Ravichandran, Krish Shah, Sameena Khan, Jacob Wise, Paavani Reddy, Ethan Fitz and Michelle Ad- amczyk will move on to compete for about 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million. They are among 1.5 million students from 22,000 high schools across the country who took the PSAT in their junior year. Less than 1% of high school se- niors make it to the semifinalist round. Striking Out BlindnessThe Wylie familly is holding a Bowling for Vision event to raise money for genetic research into blindness. Allan, a Holly Lane 2nd grader, was born with GUCY2D, a gene mutation that affects his vision. His brother Jacob is a 5th grader at Parkside. Bowling for Vision will be held Oct. 20 at Bay Lanes in Bay Village. Time slots are 1-3pm or 3-5pm. Cost is $20/person for two games and shoe rental. Westlake’s HUGS For SEAN Team Westlake’s HUGS FOR SEAN team recently participated in the Sept. 22 Cleveland Autism Speaks Walk Now for Autism. The team raised more than $2,000 to fund research and raise awareness for autism. Sean is a 6th grader at Parkside. Free Webinar on Literary Reference CenterINFOhio will introduce the Literary Reference Center, a free resource that provides biographical information on thousands of worldwide authors throughout history, as well as summaries and analyses of their major works via a webinar on Oct. 3 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Participants will learn tips for making the most of the essays, e-books, curriculum correlations and re-search guides available. INFOhio webinars are archived for later viewing, providing educators another option to earn certificates of attendance for CEU credit by answering questions afterward. Selected videos will be show-cased during Ohio’s Annual Statewide Education Conference Oct. 28-29 in Columbus. Videos must be 55 seconds in length and emailed to [email protected] by Friday, Oct. 11. Levy Information Night You are invited to attend an informational night on Issue 88 - Westlake Schools’ 5.4-mill operating levy on the Nov. 5 ballot - Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7pm at Porter Public Li-brary. Citizens for Westlake Schools Campaign Chair Cris Kennedy and Superinten-dent Dr. Daniel J. Keenan Jr. will present facts about the levy and take questions.
