LATE SUMMER AT SSLC

SCHOOL

SUPPLY

DRIVE

Ends Sunday,

September 9.

RETURNING TO 2 SERVICES SEPTEMBER 9

After much discussion and prayer, our Church Council and Pastor

Daryl have decided to return to TWO worship services on

Sundays, beginning on Sunday, September 9. Worship times will

be 8 am and 10 am, with Kingdom Kids at 9 am.

Blessing of the Backpacks

All students who will be (or already are) back at school on September 9th are invited to

bring their backpack and/or book bag to worship for a special blessing to worship at 8 a.m. or

10 a.m. In addition to blessing students, the SSLC congregation will also bless educators at both services.

Sunday School and Breakfast Club will also begin on Sept. 9 – at 9 a.m.!

This is not a coincidence, it is a happy two-for-one! Please consider registering your student by clicking on the link

at the top of the www.sslcmn.org webpage.

Commissioning of

SSLC Christian

Education Leaders

At the 8 and 10 a.m. services on

September 9, the congregation will

publically commission the men and

women who will work as Christian

educators and small group leaders at

SSLC in Kingdom Kids, The Breakfast

Club and the Confirmation Program this

year. This list includes: Carla Griffin,

Sheri Haus, Shelley Peterson,

Olivia Mateyka, Hanna Uecker, Isabel

Swanson, Grace Kampa, Kaitlyn Uecker,

Hanna Klimmek, Erica Klimmek, Madi

Temple, Amanda Bergsten, Hailey

Uecker, Denise Fowler, Christine

Bistodeau, Roberta Bistodeau, Johanna

Galles, Michelle Prokott, Julie Jarvi,

Cheri Hendricks, Karla Zerwas, Kris

Mateyka, Rochelle Ament, Faith

Pozorski, Amity Felton, Stacy Baldry,

Paulii Temple, Angela Spinler, Tonya

Ricker, Janelle Uecker, David Darsow,

Wendy Reisem and Kim Kampa. We

praise God for the work that they will do

in your vineyard and we ask that you

bless them with a spirit of boldness in

sharing the good news of Jesus Christ!

Couple’s Communication

Seminar 2.0

‘Seven Habits of Highly Effective

Couples’ is a Covey Institute Course that is taught

around the world as a means of bolstering families

and improving marriages. People will pay upwards

of $1,000 to attend these as weekend seminars –

but you have the opportunity of participating in

one of these for the cost of the materials – plus

food.

Pastor Thul is a certified Steven Covey instructor

and has led this training more than 15 times over

the past four years to married soldiers and their

spouses and he wants to share it with couples at

SSLC this fall. It is twice as long as the Prep

Course, so rather than attempt to string together

seven Sunday evenings, the plan is to offer one

session per month until complete – with a session

on the following Sunday after the 10 a.m. worship

service for any couple that missed the previous

lesson/date night or would find it more convenient

to attend then for whatever reason. Materials for

the seminar will be $65 and meals will be on a pay

-as-you-go basis (more information to follow on

restaurant and training location schedule). The

training nights will be: 9/23, 10/21, 11/18, 12/3,

THREADS OF HOPE

AND KINDNESS

We are looking for donations of WORKING

sewing machines (with instruction book) for

our group.

flannel for baby blankets, or any offering to purchase

fabric. Our group meets during the school year on

looking for people to cover the Altar Guild duties for the

10 am worship services on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays of

BIBLE 101

Starting Sept. 16 , at 9:10 am, for 5 weeks,

Pastor Angela will be offering a six-session

seminar titled “Bible 101.”

It will allow people (members or prospective members) to

see and hear what they may have missed/forgotten from

their own church or confirmation experiences. Individuals

who are not baptized or have fallen far away from faith or

really never had much in terms of Christian education

are encouraged to participate in this before becoming

members.

NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION

Membership isn’t required to

participate in the life of South Santiago Lutheran,

including worship, communion, confirmation,

Kingdom Kids or most other activities. That said,

membership does move many people toward feeling

like SSLC is their church and that they have a role to

play in this strange and unique Family of God.

Individuals who are looking to transfer or simply start

again after a period of inactivity from this or another

congregation are received as official members of

SSLC by attending a new member orientation and

affirming the basic tenets of our faith in Jesus Christ

(the same ones that are used at baptism and

confirmation). Our next SSLC orientation will be

Sunday, Sept 30, at 11:30 a.m. and includes lunch.

Women’s Ministry will be meeting on

Sunday, September 23 at 9:15 am.

All women of SSLC are welcome and

Invited to join us.

Please bring your ideas of projects, events, and

social activities. We will brainstorm ideas and plan for

the fall craft fair and Thanksgiving offering.

Becker Backpack Buddies

Backpack Buddies’ mission is to reduce

the effects of childhood hunger by

providing nutritious, easy- to- prepare meals over the

weekends to children in food-insecure homes in the

Becker area. The idea is to close the hunger gap that

currently exists and to raise awareness that this problem

really does exist in the Becker community.

We hope to accomplish this by bringing the businesses,

faith based organizations, schools and community

members together with a common goal and mission.

Currently this program reaches 215+ students in all four

Becker schools. Our goal is to ensure that we will have

this program running year after year. We cannot do this

project alone. We need help from people like you!

Can Do Canines

Can Do Canines (New Hope, Minn.) is

dedicated to enhancing the quality of

life for people with disabilities by creating mutually

beneficial partnerships with specially trained dogs.

Since 1989, Can Do Canines has provided assistance

dogs to people with disabilities, free of charge. Our

fully-trained dogs, sometimes adopted from local

animal shelters, are provided to clients with mobility

challenges, hearing loss or deafness, seizure

disorders, diabetes complicated by hypoglycemia

unawareness or children with autism.

Can Do Canines is the largest provider of assistance

dogs in Minnesota and relies on individual

contributions to support its important work. It costs

more than $25,000 to train and place an

assistance dog.

Kindergarteners to Receive

Students entering Kindergarten this fall

will be presented with Children’s

Illustrated Bibles at both services on

Sept. 9. Families are encouraged to invite the child’s

godparents to be a part of this milestone and

The Breakfast Club

SSLC has moved Christian

Education for 5th and 6th

graders to Sunday mornings from Wednesday

evenings. The 9 a.m. Sunday morning classes for

this group has been named ‘The Breakfast Club’ and

it will be wonderful – and it will include good food

(as the name suggests). Families of students who

had 5th graders in the Wednesday night program

last year have the option of sending their student to

Wednesday evenings or bringing them to Sunday

morning – or both. There is a registration link on our

webpage at www.sslcmn.org.

All students who will be (or already are) back

at school on September 9th are invited to bring

Page 6 The Messenger

In my first few weeks at SSLC, I have had the opportunity to do a lot of things for the first time as

your new pastor: leading worship with Pastor Daryl that first Sunday, making my first home visit,

meeting many of you for the first time (and perhaps a second or a third time… seriously, I

apologize for my horrible memory when it comes to names and faces!). Of course, many of these

things are things I’ve done before in other contexts, but there is something about starting over

somewhere new. You have experiences that you may have had a dozen times before, but they still feel fresh.

They are laced with excitement and anticipation and nervousness and maybe a little bit of fear. When you start

something new, the future seems wide open with possibilities, which can be all at once thrilling and terrifying.

This coming program year gives all of us at SSLC the chance to start fresh. There will be a good number of little

changes as well as a few big ones. Pastor Daryl has already enumerated those coming changes in his message in

this very newsletter. As you read through them, perhaps you are filled with excitement at the new ways we are

seeking to be in relationship with God as individuals and as one church body. Or perhaps you have some

hesitation, wondering what these new initiatives will look like. Whatever you’re feeling, know that each

challenging us, and logistically, what has worked well in the past and what we can do better.

Know too that the God we follow is a God of new beginnings. God is the God who makes all things new, not just

once, but over and over again. We are each given grace and strength anew each day. Even God’s creation

reflects a God that is always on the move – the earth turns, the seasons change, the tides go in and out.

Nothing about our God is stagnant – He is always up to something in and among us.

In the next few months, we will get to see the tangible things God is starting anew at SSLC.

What is God starting anew in your life?

Each year we invite congregation members to consider partnering in prayer

with students in the youth program. Our hope is that as youth grow in faith,

and develop as leaders within the church they may feel that they are held

deeply in a community that cares for them, encourages them, and supports

them in their journey.

Here is where you come in. The congregation would like to invite you to join us

in this journey. Would you consider committing to praying for a youth this year? We have a few names

left that could use a person to pray for them, drop a note in their mailbox, and encourage them in this

journey. You could be the person that helps shape their faith journey this year. Connect with the office

for a name of a student that could use a person to pray for them.

This year is an opportunity to step boldly into new opportunities. As the congregation continues to shape

and reshape itself we are called to new places together in community. That opportunity to grow needs to

be grounded in prayer and support. This is our chance to invite others to see the work of God in their

lives in new and exciting ways. Please consider joining us on this journey.

PASTOR DARYL’S MESSAGE

***** Thul Time ***** A.B. Simpson was a Canadian Presbyterian Pastor who was called to the 13th Street Church in New York City in 1879

as senior pastor, only leave it (and the Presbyterian Church altogether) two years later. Simpson was frustrated by his

congregation’s – as well as his previous congregations’ willingness to evangelize beyond their own walls.

So he quit what was a secure position, one with stature and clout ministering to the wealthier families of the Greenwich

Village area, to bring Jesus to the streets. He preached Christ crucified to new immigrant families and was one of the

leaders of what was called the Pentecostal movement in American Religious History.

This is the time period when American Christian leaders publicly recognized the Holy Spirit as an equal part of the

Trinity and pushed for reform in how pastors preach God’s work in the world through Jesus Christ and beyond. It was a

good thing and just like most everything there were some who would take it too far. But we are better for his work,

even though Lutherans would disagree with some of his teachings.

A.B. eventually founded what was to become the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church – which currently counts

more than 2,000 congregations spread through the world (mostly in the eastern part of the United States and Canada).

The church he left in 1881 is now an apartment building.

I bring this history lesson up because Pastor Simpson has a quote that I think is applicable to us today at SSLC as we

look to starting the program year.

“One of the special marks of the Holy Ghost in the Apostolic Church was the spirit of boldness.”

Apostolic is a fancy world that means ‘messenger’ or ‘sent’ church, insomuch as Jesus commissioned His followers to

‘Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of

the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always,

to the very end of the age.”

So that’s where we are: We are called into God’s family and then further sent into the world to live the Good News of

Jesus Christ and the Grace that he shared through his incredible sacrifice once and for all.

If you read through this newsletter, you will see a crazy amount of things going on and starting in the next couple of

weeks. I’m not saying ‘Lead, Follow or Get Out of the Way’ – what I am saying is hold onto your hats and find a way

to get swept up into the work that the Holy Spirit has done, is doing and will continue to do in, with and through SSLC.

We’re baptizing and we’re teaching.

As various events and activities come close on the calendar, please consider using them as opportunities to invite

un-churched and de-churched family members and friends. Pastor Angela and I are working very hard to make worship

at South Santiago an experience that allows for people with a lot of Biblical literacy and people with little or no

Christian education to grasp the message that God has given us to share: We are called to Teach the Word and Reach

the World: We are a congregation whose core values seek changed lives through the power of the Holy Spirit by

forming and sustaining life-long personal faith in God through Jesus Christ. We’re trying to do this by engaging

people where they are and radically welcoming all to join us in mission – connecting to others in Christ within

the congregation, into the greater community and ultimately to the world beyond.

Let’s do it. Pastor Angela and I are excited to see what God has in store for us this fall!

YOUTH NEWS

Confirmation Students will

receive new Student

Study Bible

All students involved in the SSLC

Wednesday Night Confirmation program

will be blessed with a new ‘Colaborate’

Student Study Bible to be used through

their studies and we will highlight them

and write in them and get to know them

very well. This translation/version

replaces the Spark! Bible that had been

used in previous years. Students will be

presented with their Bible at worship on

Sept. 9, at 8 a.m. or 10 a.m. worship by

the congregation leaders – and

then blessed up!

Confirmation Nights to Resume September 5

SSLC will begin the 2018-2019 Confirmation Program Year on

Sept. 5 , at 6:30 p.m.

The evening will begin with a large group lesson taught by one of

the pastors while students are seated at tables in the narthex. At

approximately 7 p.m., the students will break into their small

groups for administration and discussion time with their small

group leaders. Finally, everyone in the building will come

together at 7:30 p.m. for worship in the sanctuary. Bible Verse

memorization, service project participation and Sermon notes

will be part of this year’s itinerary. It will actually be a lot more

enjoyable than that last sentence suggests. Every student will be

asked to bring an adult mentor monthly as we work through

some historical or more difficult subjects – the schedule has

been published and students will receive their handbook on that

first evening.

There is a means to register your student for confirmation using

the link on our webpage at www.sslcmn.org. If you forget or

can’t do that, feel free still join in on opening night. For more

information, please contact Pastor Thul at 651 341-3787.

WORSHIP SCHEDULE

Worship Sunday at 9:30 am

(August 5 thru Sept. 2)

Starting Sept. 9 8 am & 10 am

Office Hours Monday - Thursday 8 a.m.-2 p.m.

We are a congregation whose core values seek changed lives

through the power of the Holy Spirit by forming

and sustaining life-long personal faith in God through Christ

Jesus. We practice this by engaging in cross-

generational ministry and radical hospitality as it is

revealed by God’s Word. We do this by connecting with our

congregation, the community and the world.

PET REMEMBRANCE

& BLESSING

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7

Come join us—and bring your beloved pets—for

worship that reminds us of our true hope in Christ

Jesus to make all things new in the resurrection.

Features of the day will include…A blessing for all

pets who come with you, Treats for cats and

dogs—maybe birds and fish too?

A time of remembrance for all pets we have

lost over the past year.

Anyone who is willing to help out with making this

an extra-special day,

please contact Pastor Daryl or

Pastor Angela!
