Who do you confide in and share the details of your life? Who knows your song and is willingly to sing it back to you when you have forgotten it and desperately need to hear it? FROM THE DESK OF THE DEACON …

While on my recent silent, directed retreat, I was encouraged by my spiritual director to renew my ac-quaintance with some of the Desert Fathers and Mothers, to drink in the wisdom they poured out and to find refreshment there for my soul. I’d like to share with you a sample of some of the stories told by these early Christians. These mystics left the worldly life to dwell (often alone) in the desert in order to be better able to hear and know the will of God. When people would travel to seek their wisdom, they would often teach by telling stories.

A certain old man dwelt in the desert, and his cell was far from water, about seven miles. Once when he was going to draw water, he flagged and said to himself, “What need is there for me to endure this toil? I shall come and live near the water.” And saying this, he turned about and saw one following him and counting his footprints: and he questioned him, saying, “Who art thou?” And the other said, “I am an angel of the Lord, and I am sent to count thy footprints and give thee thy reward.” And when he heard him, the old man’s heart was stout, and himself more ready, and he set his cell still farther from that water.

That story readily sends a message to me that sometimes we need to keep on keeping on in our work as disciples of Christ. When we think we’ve given our all, maybe we need to give more. When we think we’ve done our best, maybe we can do a bit better. When we think we’ve prayed hard enough, maybe we need to get back on our knees. There’s always more work to be done; there will always be more mouths to feed, more hands to hold, more oppression to fight. The call to serve is never-ending and there is no short and easy route to getting the work done.

September ushers in the fall season and the restart of some of our regular church programs. What an excellent time for each of us to re-commit to the programs and ministries of our church as well as to edu-cational opportunities afforded during the Sunday School hour or programs like All in the Family. Maybe Sep-tember would be a good time to “set our cells” closer to the church and farther from the things that would keep us away from its ministries!

But what if a renewed effort to be faithful, hardworking disciples is just too difficult, too draining? The Desert Fathers spoke to that issue as well:

It was said of Abba (Father) Marcarius the Egyptian that one day when he was going up from Scetis to the river with a load of baskets, he sat down, overcome with weariness and began to say to himself, “My God, you know very well that I cannot go any farther,” and immediately he found himself at the river.

We may not all have ready access to the wisdom of the Dessert Fathers and Mothers, but we all have access to the hymns of our faith. In the lyrics to one of my favorites, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” these words of encouragement have many times given me the “oomph” I needed to keep on keeping on:

Strength for today, and bright hope for tomorrow. Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me.

On the journey with you,

Elizabeth

Light and Life MUSIC AND WORSHIP IN SEPTEMBER

Sunday, September 2

On this first Sunday in September, we offer to God our selves, our heart and soul and mind and strength, that God’s will might be done as we work towards a world in which all God’s children are bound in love.

We also offer a “joyful noise”! This in the form of anthem “Praise His Holy Name”, a song which has become a favorite through the years with both choir and congregation.

Sunday, September 9th

(Remember, worship returns to 10:45 a.m.)

We are fortunate to have guest guitarist John Vaughan providing much of the service music for us on this communion Sunday. Mr. Vaughan, a long-time Clarksburg resident, has been with us through the years on several occasions —- for Summer Vespers and Winter Advent noontime services.

On Sept. 9, Mr. Vaughan will offer a wonderful vari-ety of acoustic guitar selections for our prelude, our offertory and music for distribution of the elements.

Sunday, September 16th

The Chancel Choir will sing a great and lively set-ting of Psalm 118, “This Is the Day The Lord Has Made”

Composed by Marty Haugen, the anthem calls us to thanksgiving for God’s power, God’s mercy, God’s love. Our response? Let us rejoice and be glad!”

Clarinetist Joel Rhodes will be with us again this day, joined by our new pianist, Elizabeth Etnoyer! Joel’s playing is always amazing, matched only by his willingness to share his talents with us in worship.

Sunday, September 23

Remember Simon and Garfunkle? Even if not, you may remember one of their hit songs from the late 1960’s, “Bridge Over Troubled Water”.

On this fourth Sunday in September, Rev. Sale uses the imagery of a “bridge” connecting us as current church members to visitors as the basis for his sermon, and the worship service that day. And you will hear the song as sung by Don Gardner.

Also on that day, the Chancel Choir will sing an arrangement of a song composed 30 years ago by Marty Haugen, “Gather Us in”

Gather us in and hold us forever

Gather us in and make us your own

Call to us now, and we shall awaken

We shall arise at the call of our name.

Sunday, September 30

As a “fifth Sunday”, this will be one of our Fellowship Worship services, held downstairs in our dining hall, and preceded by a 9:45 covered-dish brunch.

A special treat for us this day is the “premiere” performance of a delightful song entitled “Consider the Lilies”, composed by Michael Bedford. Soloist is soprano Sarah Smith. This simple waltz-time tune captures the gentle imagery of delicate flowers and tiny birds, with the reminder that if these small elements of God’s creation are beloved by the Creator, then we, too, are cherished.

“Bind Us

Together,

Lord….

Bind Us

Together

In Love.”

STEPHEN MINISTRY - CARING MOMENTS Some more thoughts on Stephen Ministry from Dr. John Ortberg, contemporary Christian author and Senior Pastor of the Menlo Park Presbyterian mega-Church in the Bay area of California:

A lot of people receiving care from Menlo Park’s Stephen Ministers are unchurched people. “One of the primary dynamics we’ve identified in our church area is isolated living. Many people have moved here from somewhere else and are pretty much on their own - without family or a support system”.

“This actually becomes a big opportunity for the church to really be the church - to be a family for folks who are lonely, search-ing spiritually, or in pain. But a church can’t be a support system if it isn’t equipped to help people during these moments. At Menlo Park, Stephen Ministry has helped us to equip people, so when somebody is in pain, we’re able to say, ‘Here’s some-one who can come alongside you and love you’. I think we’re living in an age where this kind of need is increasing dramati-cally.”

“Robert Putnam, author of ‘Bowling Alone’, has written a lot about the loss of social capital. That sense of connectedness through family, service organizations, and community involvement has been on the decline in our culture for a long time - and the decline continues.”

“That means people have an even greater need for a place to connect - a community where they can be part of a family. I think Stephen Ministry has really been helpful for us in meeting that need. I like to remind our congregation that we’ve got quiet heroes in our midst who are doing amazing ministry. That’s a cool thing for the whole congregation.”

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

If you or someone you know might benefit from having a Stephen Minister to walk with you through a time of trouble or dis-couragement or have questions about this ministry, please contact Cheryl Moorhead, Referrals Coordinator or Reverend Baker at 304-623-3397.

Light and Life The Cup of Our Life

Author Joyce Rupp has shown how an ordinary open cup - chipped, broken or blemished--can become a sacred vessel, a teacher in prayer. Do I have your attention? Wow! The introduction to her book certainly had mine when I first read it. Rupp will take us on a journey where the cup will connect us with life, draw us closer to God, and show us how the cup is a symbol of life with its emptiness, its fullness, its brokenness and all its blessings. If you are interested in taking this journey with a few companions, please join us in September for a study group. The study will begin on Wednesday, September 12th, and meet every Wednesday from 9:30 until 11:00 a.m. The first meeting will be a “get to know everyone” meeting and a time to distribute study materials. If you are interested in being part of this study/prayer group, please contact me. I am looking forward to hearing from everyone! Chrissane Quance 304-476-4564

When parents trust in a loving, giving God, that trust shows — especially in tough financial times. Let's set a good example for our children by being "content," regardless of our bank balance. When your family has more "month than money," try these contentment-garnering activities. Instead of window-shopping at the mall, clean out your closets and toy chests. You'll be reminded of just how God has blessed you, and you can donate outgrown clothing and toys to charity. If money is really tight, have a yard sale; but remember to tithe the profits. If you decide to cut up your credit cards, do so in the presence of your children, and explain why you are doing it in simple language. Let them know that it is important to take control of expenses instead of being controlled by expenses. Instead of going to the theater, pop some popcorn and watch home movies in your living room. Chil-dren love watching themselves on tape, and this trip down memory lane is another blessing reminder. If movies are not available, thumb through photo albums. The pictures will stir questions from the chil-dren about events in the past. It is a time when you can tell the important family stories because the children ask to hear them. Forgo dining at a restaurant, and have a picnic at the park. The fresh air and natural surroundings will be another blessing reminder. Be creative and include your entire family in planning activities to draw you closer together as a family and closer to God. Questions for Discussion • Do we need money to have fun?

• What is contentment?

• What family activities cost little or nothing, but are really great? ♦ If God is always with us, do we ever really need to worry about money?

ATTENTION SHOPPERS! THOSE WHO LOVE TO SHOP! CHRISTMAS SHOPPING IN THE SUMMER! This past Christmas we enjoyed watching 40 of our Feed My Sheep guests as they received a free Christmas tote with gifts included. It was all free to FUMC through World Vision - but we will not be receiving free stuff this year. It was such a joy to watch the excitement on the faces of our FMS attendees as their name was called for their gift. These are adults but their excitement was child-like. Since we no longer receive items from World Vision...Would you shoppers help us find free or inexpensive gifts? Examples of items you might look for, purchase and donate: big totes, T-shirts, socks, gloves, note pads, pens, jewelry, deodorants, shampoo, knickknacks, etc. Use your imagination - these items could be from the beach or a thrift shop. The items need to be new. When you have shopped, bring your items to the church and we will store them. For details, see Nancy Ferber, Rita Looker, Cheryl Moorhead or Anita Burns.
