Quarter 2 Newsletter 2018

This summer our Peacemakers Club decided they wanted to try and adopt a wild animal from the World Wildlife Fund. Much to the kids’ chagrin, they found out that does not mean they get to keep a tiger or elephant at the Club. After staff member Carissa explained how helpful symbolically adopting an animal is, the kids decided it was still a good idea. To raise the money to adopt the animal, our Peacemakers are planting fl owers and herbs that they will sell closer to the end of the summer once grown. They also decided to make some bird seed ornaments to sell. We will keep everyone updated on social media when those are available so make sure to keep an eye out if you are interested in helping our Peacemakers reach their goal. The most diffi cult part of the process may be choosing which animal to adopt from a list of 140 cute animals.

Lemonade Stand is a program where members learn how to run a business, more specifi cally a lemonade stand. They also learn fi nancial literacy, and job & career readiness. Each summer our members pick a non-profi t in Huntington to donate their proceeds to. This summer, the Cadet group chose the Huntington County Humane Society and the Junior group chose McKenzie’s Hope. They hope to have a speaker from each organization come in to talk more about all the services they provide. To prepare for selling their lemonade, the members have been making signs for their business and practicing making change. The Lemonade Stand will be open each Friday afternoon if you ever have a sweet tooth for some lemonade.

Heritage Day Parade Fun!

Our Keystone members were able to attend the annual Keystone Conference this year in Atlanta, Georgia. We had ten members attend and two of our members wrote to tell us about their experience.

“The Keystone Conference in Atlanta was a once in a lifetime experience. I was given the opportunity to take a class to see if I was ready for college. In this session they showed me good social skills, fi nancial skills and how to get scholarships. I am very thankful I got the opportunity to go on this trip!” -Charlie A

“I was excited to attend the National Keystone Conference in Atlanta Georgia because of the sessions. My favorite session was the Smart Girls Expo. The Expo was very empowering to me, especially because it changed my perspective about being a girl and what I can do in modern day society. The message they presented to us Smart Girls, was about our self-image and how you can do whatever you want if you put your mind to it. The speakers really opened up on how I can do the things I want if I work for it. During the session we could do a variety of activities. The Smart Girls Expo was a fabulous example of how young woman can change their self-image through the smallest ways. I walked in thinking “Oh how cool, and I’m going to have fun in here” but walked out thinking ‘I am a young beautiful lady who can do whatever she puts her mind to.’ The opportunity that I had to go to this con-ference was incredible. They changed my perspective about myself in an hour, how amazing is that!” -Gabby M.
