Bolder 5-Year Direction Timeline Do You Have Opinions on Our Work Zones? MoDoT Seeks Public Input on Work Zones

The prime construction season may be winding down, but the Missouri Department of Trans-

portation has several construction zones, and we want your opinion on them.

The department wants traveler feed-back on construction work zones on state highways with the goal of making them safer and better. A customer sur-vey, available on MoDOT’s Web site at www.modot.org/kc, allows you to pro-vide feedback on specific work zones through which you have traveled.

Did you have enough warning that you were approaching construction work? Were the signs understandable and easy to see?

Work zone visibility and traffic flow are two important factors in evaluating work zones. The public offers feedback on advanced warning, speed limit, timeliness and safety. Surveys are used to improve current and future work zones to make them more efficient for drivers while maintaining high levels of safety to protect both workers and drivers.

Ribbon Cuttings and Events Around the District

This week’s events featured finished a Safe & Sound Bridge, a new interchange and a bridge in the

heart of downtown Kansas City.

As with any event MoDOT hosts, employ-ees are always welcome to attend. Visit our website at www.modot.org/kc and click on “News and Information” for a link to the public meetings scheduled for the coming weeks.

Nearly 100 participants turned out Tuesday, Sept. 6, to cut the ribbon dedicating the new Broadway Overpass over I-670 in the Downtown Loop. The new bridge features wider side-walks, attractive pedestrian barriers on each side and additional room below the bridge, thanks to the use of low-profile beams.

Left to right, Cass County South Commissioner Bill Cook joins MoDOT Construction Technician Jerry Howard, Senior Construction Inspector EJ Dunkeson, Dustin Akrre with general contrac-tor Chester Bross Construction and County Public Works Director Chuck McCulloh to cut the ribbon on the Route Z bridge over Clear Creek north of Garden City on September 7.

MoDOT, state, county and city officials cel-ebrated with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Sept. 8 for a more than $10 million project to build a full diamond interchange at Route 9 and Briarcliff Parkway. MoDOT partnered with the Briarcliff Development Company and the City of Kansas City to widen Briarcliff Parkway to four lanes, add a new on-ramp from Briarcliff Parkway to access northbound Route 9, and a new off-ramp from south-bound Route 9 to access Briarcliff Parkway.

KC KUDOS:

“We just wanted to write and thank you both (Gina Myles and Nancy Powell) for the tour of your facil-

ity (Kansas City Scout) yesterday. Wow, what a massive amount of information to monitor! We had no idea of the mag-nitude of your operation, but certainly now have a greater understanding of the important service you provide. Thanks again! --Mercedes-Benz Club of America

EAEC Corner: Profiles

The KC Employee Advisory Exten-sion Council (EAEC) has been active for more than three years

and serves KC District employees. The council’s goal is to foster and enhance a positive work environment for all em-ployees by assisting management and employees with cultural diversity, policy review, and communication issues.

Take advantage of this avenue to stay informed about our district. You can contact the various members or submit a concern or question through the intranet or through a paper form that can be lo-cated in each work unit. All concerns are anonymous and confidential throughout the process.

The EAEC Corner introduces you to the members of the council.

Name, title and position on the EAEC. Jamale Wilcox, Senior Crew Worker, Asst. Secretary

What areas of the district do you repre-sent on the council? I represent Johnson County.

Why did you volunteer and what do you hope to accomplish while serving on the EAEC? I volunteered to try and make a difference within MoDOT, and help other employees get answers to questions about issues they were not understand-ing.

What’s the best part of serving on the team? Working with the other people on the team. There is a vast amount of knowledge and diversity that is on the EAEC panel that helps all the employees here at MoDOT. What is one employee issue you hold near and dear to your heart? Snow. Every year we get a ton of questions, and confusion in this area. I feel this is a real area of concern that needs a better approach. We all know it is coming at the end of the year, we should be better prepared for it.

More than half of all electrocutions are caused by contact with overhead lines. When working in an elevated position nearoverhead lines, avoid locations where you (and any conductive object you hold) could contact an unguarded or uninsulatedline. Vehicle operators should also pay at-tention to overhead wiring. Dump trucks, bucket trucks and cranes can lift and make contact with overhead lines. Overhead power lines can carry very high voltages, but there are safety work practices you can follow to stay out of danger:• Beforeyoubegintowork, surveythe

jobsitecarefully.Lookforoverheadpowerlines.Keepinmindthatbranchesmayhidepowerlines.

• Alwaysassumeoverheadlinesareenergized,bare,anddangerous,nomatterwhattheymaylooklike.
