UMUFC 2009Overview

• Since 1994 significant reductions in PM & NOx

• True 2010 emission standard 0.2 g NOx and 0.01g PM.

• EPA 2010 not expected to be moved out

“Implementing the emission rules for heavy-duty engines is going smoothly [and] will be a reality in 2010. We’re on track.”

- Dale Kemery EPA Spokesperson

• Currently no additional EPA emissions regulations after 2010

UMUFC 20092010 Fact vs. Fiction

SCR will add 400 lbs to the truck

• SCR will add 217 lbs to an M2-106

including 6 gallons of DEF

• Cummins ISB is 325 lbs lighter than

Competitors EPA07 7.6L

• EPA10 Cummins ISB with SCR will

still be lighter than Competitors 7.6L

with Extreme EGR

Something to Consider – how much weight will the second turbo, stainless intercooler, and larger cooling system add to an Extreme EGR vehicle?

Page 18: Sep 15, 2009 UMUFC Mike Finney, Vocational Sales Manager- Utilities

Daimler Trucks North America

UMUFC 20092010 Fact vs. Fiction

Without DEF the vehicle will not run

Under no circumstances will the engine be shutdown due to running the vehicle out of DEF or putting the improper fluid in the DEF tankWhen the DEF tank is empty, after extensive driver notification and inducement “…the vehicle will be limited to 5 mph with inducement notification”

DEF is corrosive, hazardous, and unsafe to handle

Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)

• Hazards Identification “Urea Solution is not Flammable”

• First Aid Measures“Wash area thoroughly with soap and water”

• Fire Fighting Measures“Urea solution is not flammable”

• Transportation Information“Urea solution is not listed by any US or Canadian transportation authority as a hazardous material…”

UMUFC 2009DEF Fact vs. Fiction

DEF is useless in the cold because it freezes at 12°F

DEF will

start to

freeze at 12°F

Engine coolant is used to thaw DEF in tank. System

will function until DEF begins to flow

EPA Requires DEF flow within 70 minutes – Detroit Diesel testing has proven DEF flow within EPA requirements

UMUFC 2009DEF Fact vs. Fiction

DEF will cost between $17 and $34 per gallon

$15.50 per Gallon

DEF pricing is dependant on packaging size

Worst Case:Pass Car Dealership

Gallon

Most Frequent Scenario:

Fleet Terminal 275 Gallon IBC

$2.61 per Gallon

$719.60/275 = $2.61/gallon

$7.75*2 = $15.50/gallon

Page 27: Sep 15, 2009 UMUFC Mike Finney, Vocational Sales Manager- Utilities

Daimler Trucks North America

UMUFC 20092010 Fact vs. Fiction

Consumption of DEF offsets fuel savings

EGR 2007 EGR 2010

Example – Utility Truck with PTO operation Fuel consumption at high idle = 1.2 gallons/hourAssume PTO operation 6 hours per day, 240 days per year = 1,440 gallons

per year5,000 miles / 7 mpg = 714 gallons diesel fuel per yearDEF usage @ 2% of fuel consumption = 43 gallons of DEF / year43 gallons / 6 gallon tank (average size) = ~8 DEF fill-ups / yearDiesel cost ~$6,500DEF cost ~$108Diesel cost savings due to fuel economy increase ~ $350

DEF fill-up every 7 weeks with 6 gallon tank

DEF fill-up every 3.5 months with 13 gallon tank

Every 50 gallons of

fuel =

1 gallon of DEF

UMUFC 2009DEF Fact or Fiction?

SCR is a marooned technology and fleets don’t want

it

Fleets testing Medium Duty 2010 Engines with SCR are pleased with the performance.

• “Our technicians had no reliability issue and servicing the engine was transparent”

• “. . . our customer experienced a remarkable 10% improvement (fuel economy) with the Cummins engine over their existing units”

• “There was very good performance, and no issues with availability of diesel exhaust fluid . . . The consumption rate of DEF was as good as advertised, 2% of the fuel consumption level. ”

• “This new engine delivers on what has been promised: cleaner air, meeting new emissions standards, and less NOx with better fuel economy.”

SCR places burden of compliance on Customer

Fill DEF Here

• SCR is a long term solution that

increases Fuel Economy by up to 5%

over EPA’07 engines, removing the

burden from the customers’ pocket

book

• Customers can fill their DEF tank

while they pump diesel, or size the

tank to be filled at scheduled

maintenance intervals

Proponents of Extreme EGR have spent a small fortune to convince the market that its In-cylinder system is superior to SCR. This information will provide the “whole story” in factual terms related to Diesel Exhaust Fluid use in 2010.

Benefits of natural gas as a fuel• Cleaner burning than diesel (5% to 23% lower GHG)

• Abundant supply in North America-Foreign Oil Not Required!

• Renewable fuel – LFG (landfill gas) to LNG• Can be less expensive to operate than diesel• Latest NG technology engines available---ONE OF THE

FIRST TO REALLY WORK!Fleet/Vehicle Benefits

• Fleet standardization to 2010 emissions now

• No additional emissions control devices in 2010- Maintenance free 3-way catalyst- No DPF regeneration needed

• Component packaging remains unchanged in 2010

Natural Gas Fleet Report

• 330 units produced; 280 delivered, last 50 to POLB Clean Truck Program

• After initial fueling issues resolved, units have been running very well.• Fuel economy is excellent, ranging from 5.2 to 6.0 MPG• Drayage tractors still idle at a 50% rate. Need driver training and

better Port flow.• Driver concern: “We need another fuel tank to eliminate daily fueling”.

When Anaheim Street station opens that will diminish that concern somewhat.
