What is Hummingbird?
"precise and fast” Biggest algorithmic change in 12 years - Huffington Post
Many parts are still the same
![Page 7: SEO Strategy and The Hummingbird Effect](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042700/554ce7d3b4c905d6488b58a8/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
What is the purpose of Hummingbird?
§ Look at your entire sentence and better understand what you want
§ Improve results accuracy
§ Improve mobile and voice search
§ Make search faster and more precise
It takes Knowledge Graph and turns Google's results into a more conversational, more semantic, and even a more sentient search solution - Huffington Post
Rather than attempting to identify the individual keywords or phrases that are found in a search query, the new Hummingbird update looks at the query as a whole. It considers the whole sentence and then looks for the most relevant results. More than this, though, it provides a more rounded list of results that give background information as well as supporting information too. - Huffington Post
Google is not preventing anonymous content from existing online, it's giving preference to verified, identified and vouched-for content. It's a tacit tiering of the internet: real-name-verified authored content and everything else. - Huffington Post

What actually changed?
The Hummingbird update can be seen as a natural progression from the Knowledge Graph. It combines Google's undoubted search capabilities with the interesting and invaluable information provide by Knowledge Graph. • Considers authority really important • Delivers users to best page on site, not
just home page, meaning pages need to be targeted and optimized
• Voice Search able to consider a whole sentence, rather than just by keyword
HUMMINGBIRD HAS NOT KILLED SEO No more pagerank updates (on hold) - Huffington Post
Google has implemented authorship associated with real names, real identities, reputation, track record, share-worthiness, popularity, true organic behavior and patterns of deep impact and authentic penetration. - Huffington Post
1. Knowledge graph is core to search 2. Conversational search
3. Panda is softening
4. Mobile Optimization
5. Stronger focus on Authorship
![Page 15: SEO Strategy and The Hummingbird Effect](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042700/554ce7d3b4c905d6488b58a8/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Knowledge Graph is Core To Search
It takes Knowledge Graph and turns Google's results into a more conversational, more semantic, and even a more sentient search solution
It attempts to identify and highlight the connections between people, places, and things and then offer insight into these connections through its results. It essentially offers much more complex and more knowledgeable responses to users; responses that you would normally associate with having come from a human rather than a search algorithm.
![Page 16: SEO Strategy and The Hummingbird Effect](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042700/554ce7d3b4c905d6488b58a8/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)
Conversational Search
It takes Knowledge Graph and turns Google's results into a more conversational, more semantic, and even a more sentient search solution
It attempts to identify and highlight the connections between people, places, and things and then offer insight into these connections through its results. It essentially offers much more complex and more knowledgeable responses to users; responses that you would normally associate with having come from a human rather than a search algorithm.
Cutts shared an example where he was searching for weather and continued on with the query without having to keep retyping “What is the weather?” because Google can recognize the user is still refining the previous search query. “Will it rain tomorrow?” in voice search will bring up the weather results for location for Las Vegas, Nevada. Then when he says “What about in Mountain View?” and Google shows weather for Mountain View, knowing that it is a refined voice query. Then “How about this weekend?” is searched and it shows Saturday weather for Mountain View.
What is the weather today? How about tomorrow? How about in Sagada?
![Page 17: SEO Strategy and The Hummingbird Effect](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042700/554ce7d3b4c905d6488b58a8/html5/thumbnails/17.jpg)
Panda Is Softening
Some sites that were previously penalized by Panda, may be un-penalized.

Mobile Optimization
You don’t have a choice. Consumers are going mobile, and Google is favoring it.
![Page 19: SEO Strategy and The Hummingbird Effect](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042700/554ce7d3b4c905d6488b58a8/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
Stronger Focus on Authorship
Sort of like an online ID badge. Google will hugely favor authentic people over anonymous spammers.
![Page 20: SEO Strategy and The Hummingbird Effect](https://reader033.vdocuments.us/reader033/viewer/2022042700/554ce7d3b4c905d6488b58a8/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
What is a typical SEO strategy
§ On-Page Optimization § Keyword Management
§ Social Media Awesomeness
§ Blog content
§ Link Marketing
§ Guest blogging
§ Paid Advertising
§ Email Marketing
§ Video Marketing
Next up, Cutts spoke about Hummingbird and he feels that a lot of the blog posts about how to rank with Hummingbird are not that relevant. The fact is, Hummingbird was out for a month and no one noticed. Hummingbird is primarily a core quality change. It doesn’t impact SEO that much, he said, despite the many blog posts claiming otherwise. - Search Engine Watch (http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2302895/Matt-Cutts-on-SEO-PageRank-Spam-the-Future-of-Google-Search-at-Pubcon-Las-Vegas)
Of most interest to some SEOs is that Google is looking at softening Panda. Those sites caught in grey areas of Panda--if they are quality sites--could see their sites start ranking again. - Search Engine Watch (http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2302895/Matt-Cutts-on-SEO-PageRank-Spam-the-Future-of-Google-Search-at-Pubcon-Las-Vegas)
Google is also looking at boosting authority through authorship. We have seen authorship becoming more and more important when it comes for search results and visibility in those results; Cutts confirmed this is the direction in which Google will continue to move. - Search Engine Watch (http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2302895/Matt-Cutts-on-SEO-PageRank-Spam-the-Future-of-Google-Search-at-Pubcon-Las-Vegas)
Rich snippets could get a revamp and they will dial back on the number of websites that will be able to display rich snippets. “More reputable websites will get rich snippets while less reputable ones will see theirs removed,” says Matt. http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2302895/Matt-Cutts-on-SEO-PageRank-Spam-the-Future-of-Google-Search-at-Pubcon-Las-Vegas
