In a perfect world all business owners want to run a successful website which has high search engine rankings as well as plenty of qualified visitors hitting on their website

every day! Search engine optimization or SEO as it is commonly referred is an extremely powerful tool that is fast becoming the most lucrative marketing medium in modern day business. While the overall complexities of SEO can be overwhelming and

sometimes time consuming if you’re not an SEO expert, these 5 simple steps are easy, DIY do-it-yourself search engine optimization improvements that you can make to your website within minutes without needing to hire an SEO consultant.

1. Create unique page titles – Avoid

duplicate page titles

As seen in the picture, page titles are what is seen at the very top of your internet

browser and it’s also what people see when they find your page in the search engine rankings in Google. For the search engines, it is the first thing they look towards when

deciding what your page represents and what they expect to find once they continue combing over the information on that page. Avoid having exactly the same duplicate page titles on every page of your website. It will be of great value to the SEO for your

website, if you think carefully about each page on your website and what exact topic or information that page will be delivering. Then formulate a page title that will be captivating for people to read, and make sure the keywords you place in your page

titles are ones that people are typing into the search engines when trying to find the information you are displaying on that page. Step 2 explains more about keyword research.

2. Research your keywords

In short, keywords as they are commonly known are the specific words that people type into the search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing when they are looking for

websites and pages with the information they have requested. DO NOT assume that you know what people are typing into the search engines to find your products and

services. A very simple example; Bill the fireman is building a website for his local fire department. He is totally convinced that people are typing “fire house” into the search

engines when in fact the majority are typing in “fire station”. There are many tools readily available for free to help you with keyword research. Try the - Google Keyword Research Tool . If you are comfortable that you know your keywords for each page

then place those in your page titles, Meta description, Meta Keywords and most importantly in the content you write on your pages. This sends a clear signal to the search engines when they are looking for what your pages represent. Step 3 explains

your meta descriptions & meta keywords.

3. Complete your meta descriptions & meta keywords on each page

This may be the most confusing task for a DIY SEO project, and you may just need to

consult your website company or SEO firm about this one! In the search engine results, after the clickable link or page title as we have described comes the meta description. The meta description is a more details summary that you can place in your coding

which Google uses to better help people understand what your page is about. The more precise the information you put in this section the better chance you have of people visiting this page, it’s your sales pitch moment. Use the keywords you have researched

glossed up with some enticing words is best suited. Meta keywords, are the words you have researched from the previous step 2. With each page you create, you should have carefully chosen the most accurate keywords that people are using and you place these

right below the meta description in your page coding. Yes, it’s a minor back end detail but it sure helps when Google is determining which page is most suited to the #1 position in its search engines!

4. Interlinking all your pages

There are two main reason why interlinking your website pages is beneficial. Firstly it drastically helps Google to navigate it’s way around all the pages of your website when

it sees links pointing to other pages in your website while looking at one particular page. Secondly, if you have a page in your website that is ranking well or has a great page rank you can spread the power around by using these pages as ammo to link to

another page within your website. Spreading the love as we call it. When the search engines visit your website and record the cross page links they will give you credit and also a boost in the search rankings for putting links out to other relevant pages in your

website that will be of interest to the visitor.

5.Outbound Links to other credible website pages

While you certainly wouldn’t post an outbound link to your most fierce competitor, but you should definitely consider placing outbound links on your pages to credible, reliable pages on other websites. Let’s say that you are a building company that is trying to

make people aware of the pitfalls within the building industry. You might consider placing an outbound link to the relevant government department that discusses the

building codes for your particular area. This is a great example of linking out to a credible yet non competitive source page. While to some people these 5 simple do it yourself SEO tips may seem very easy and

achievable, you would be amazed at how many clients our business has come across who have already embarked on some kind of SEO for their website and still have not undertaken the advice listed in this article. If you found this article to be informative
