    SENTENCE PATTERNS: SIMPLE, COMPOUND AND COMPLEX

    SENTENCES

    A. What is a sentence?

    SENTENCE A group of words that contains - a subject- a verb- a comp ete thought- an independent c ause- ends with a punctuation

    Ever) sentence must have at east one subject and one verb. Subjects and verbsare the most important parts of a sentence.

    Some sentences must have other parts in order to e8press a comp ete thought. The subject of a sentence is always e8pressed e8cept in interjection.

    SENTENCE PATTERNS: SIMPLE, COMPOUND AND COMPLEX

    A sentence is a group of words which contains a subject and a verb and which e8presses a

    comp ete idea. The subject te s who or what the sentence is about. The verb te s who orwhat the sentence is about. The verb te s what the subject is doing or what is being doneto the subject.

    COMPOUND SENTENCES

    A compound sentence is a sentence that has two independent c auses. An !n$epen$ent*"ause is a group of words which has a subject and a verb and which is ab e to stand a oneas a sentence. When two independent c auses are joined tog her to form one sentence acompound sentence is created.

    To create a compound sentence join two independent c auses with a comma and a coordinatingconjunction. There are seven coordinating conjunctions!

    Note!When there are two comp ete sentences in a compound sentence each has eGua weightin terms of the ideas being presented. That is )ou ma) want to in% sentences into acompound to show that their ideas are eGua ) important.

    COMPLEX SENTENCES

    A *omp"e senten*e is a sentence made up of two t)pes of c auses! !n$epen$ent and$epen$ent *"auses . The word !n$epen$ent means 4not under contro of others freeseparate.5 Therefore an !n$epen$ent *"ause !s one that !s *apa)"e o# )e!n- asenten*e . oo% at the fo owing e8amp es!

    A $epen$ent *"ause is the opposite of an independent c ause. A $epen$ent *"ause*annot stan$ a"one )e*ause !t !s not a *omp"ete senten*e . As the word 4dependent5suggests it is something 4needing support or he p from another.5 A dependent c ause mustdepend on an independent c ause in order to ma%e its meaning comp ete.     A dependent c ause a wa)s begins with a su)or$!nat!n- *on.un*t!on . The subordinatingconjunction is what causes the c ause to become an dependent c ause. The moment asubordinating conjunction is p aced at the beginning of a c ause that c ause can no ongerstand a one it no onger e8presses a comp ete c ear idea.     'n the first sentence the comma appeared after the word hungr). 'n the second sentenceafter we moved the c auses around the word hungr) became the ast word of the sentence.'f we were to p ace the comma in the second sentence it shou d be p aced after the wordhungr) just i%e it was in the first sentence. #owever we *annot do so because a sentencecannot end with a comma it must end with a period.     Fina ) there is one more thing )ou must consider when )ou are creating a comp e8sentence. @ou must carefu ) se ect the subordinating conjunction. @ou must thin% of themeaning )ou want )our comp e8 sentence to bring across. The wrong subordinating

    conjunction ma) change the meaning )ou intended. Stud) the fo owing.

    The first sentence sa)s that the dinner was great because E aine a good coo% hadprepared it. As )ou can see )ou must becarefu when choosing the subordinating conjunction. @ou must be sure to se ect theconjunction which best gives the meaning )ou intend.

    Compoun$/Comp"e Senten*es0

    A compound-comp e8 sentence has the characteristics of )oth the *ompoun$ senten*e 3two or more c auses6 an$ the *omp"e senten*e 3at east one dependent orsubordinate c ause6.

    Even though government aid finally came, many people had already been reduced to poverty, and others had been forced to move.

    NBTE! a c ause must contain a stated subject and at east one verb. An 'ndependent c ause must a so e8press a comp ete thought and be ab e to stand a one.
