- Process design – translate screening technologies to robust process control.
- Material properties – investigate matter on extreme length scales.
- Have the lab moved to the field - off-odor
Sensoring (Multiplexed) in process design & investigating matter

Sensoring (Multiplexed) in process design & investigating matter – “off-odor”
The challenge of sensors in complex “off-odor” systems – we need a step forward
One of the major applications of Sarlink thermoplasticvulcanisate (TPV) is as wine corc skin for synthetic winecorcs. Advantages of synthetic wine corcs over natural corcsare the absence of bio-contaminations, which may affect thequality of the wine, and the lower costs. The market ofsynthetic wine corcs is growing with double digits per year, which makes it very interesting one. In the last year anincreasing number of smell complaints has been reported byNomacorc, one of the leading synthetic wine corcs producersand purchaser of Sarlink TPV, and by Nomacorc customers.
As a result, in Feb. 2006 a DSM/Nomacorc crash team hasbeen formed to address the smell problem. The Sarlink grouphas tried to restore the damaged relationship with Nomacorcand has started a series of experimental investigations toimprove the smell of Sarlink TPV. Amongst others, a seriesof experimental design experiments (DOE) were performed.By varying the TPV formulation and the extruder and de-smelling conditions a set of samples was produced, whichwere tested by Nomacorc. It seems that a solution of thesmell problem has been found and a 20-ton de-smelled lothas been produced half May.
