Sensorineural Hearing Loss

Sensorineural hearing loss is due to damage, disorder, or dysfunction of the sensory organ of the inner ear and/or the hearing nerve. Often

called sensory loss, nerve loss, nerve deafness, and cochlear loss, this

type of loss will embody either one or both components: sensory and

neural. Neural loss alone, however, is rightfully termed – retrocochlear

hearing loss.

Damage to the inner ear may be due to

the natural aging process, ototoxic

medication use, excessive noise exposure, birth defects, diseases, and

inherited disorders. This type of loss is

characteristic of complaints of “hearing,

but not understanding”, feeling as

though others mumble or speak too quickly, having great difficulty with children and women’s voices, and

perhaps most commonly, having excessive difficulty listening in noisy

backgrounds. Many are frustrated by the hearing loss, and may not

recognize they even have a hearing impairment at first. Family

members and friends may notice the issues first since the person is frequently asking for repetition, nodding in agreement but

understanding, and placing the blame on others for misunderstandings

(e.g. “they always mumble; why don’t they speak up”).

Typically sensorineural loss is not reversible or pharmaceutically

treatable. In order to improve the loudness and clarity of sound,

hearing aids are often the choice treatment. The style and size needed

will be determined by the severity of the loss, the patient’s lifestyle

and desires. With today’s advanced digital hearing aid technology, amplification can be finely tuned and programmed to the individual’s

specific needs. Everyday listening experiences can be greatly

enhanced. While sensorineural hearing loss cannot be restored to

normal hearing, your hearing healthcare professional can help you improve your daily hearing life!!!
