XII. Sensorimotor Aspects
A. Sensory Awareness/Processing
1. Does the craft stimulate the visual system? How?
- Yes. The client uses visual sense to identify tools and materials, and determining
the patterns to be drawn and cut, lay-outing and cutting leather, and distancing ofthe stitches on the leather.
2. Is the auditory system stimulated by this craft? How?- No.
3. Does the craft process stimulate the olfactory system? How?
- No.
4. Does the gustatory system receive stimulation? How?- No.
5. What tactile involvement is required?
- The client must be able to distinguish the rough texture of the back side of theleather material from the smooth leathery feel of the actual leather. The client
must also be aware of the feel of the pointed tip of the needle to avoid beingpricked.
6. Is proprioception/kinesthesia/orientation of the body in space involved in this
activity? How?- Yes, proprioception is necessary to inform the client of the distance he/she is
away from the table, from the tools and materials to be used, and in determiningproper sitting position. Kinesthesia on the other hand is used by the client to know
which body or hand positions are necessary and appropriate to draw patterns, cutthe leather, and in sewing it. Awareness of the orientation of the body in space is
particularly needed during sewing so as for the client to be aware of his/herhands location behind or under the leather material, to avoid having it pricked
during sewing.
7. Does the craft involve vestibular/equilibrium stimulation? How?- Yes, vestibular balance is required by the client to maintain comfortable, if not
proper, sitting position, and in moving around the work area.
8. Is temperature awareness necessary in order to do this activity? When?- No.
B. Sensory Perceptual Skills
1. Is stereognosis, knowing by feel, necessary during this process? When?
- Yes, aside from awareness of body orientation in space, stereognosis also helpsthe client in determining whether the area about to be pierced by the needle is

near the fingers or not, thus aiding him/her in avoiding injury. Stereognosis is alsoessential at times in which drawing of the pattern, tracing and eventually cutting
of the leather requires focus and the patient needs to grab tools without actuallylooking at them.
2. Is awareness of body scheme or position of the body in space essential in thisactivity? When?- Yes, the client must be aware of body parts moving in relation to others so as to
be coordinated and produce acceptable, if not proper, stitches during sewing, aswell as manipulating the leather material on one hand and using scissors at the
other while cutting.
3. Does the patient need to discriminate the right from the left side in this craft? When?
- Yes, right/left discrimination is necessary for the client when creating patterns ofpouches, being able to cut along those patterns, and to be able to put together those of
the same sides of the leather while stitching.
4. Is it necessary to be able to distinguish whether forms, shapes and space are thesame? When?
- Yes, when distinguishing the exact fitting together of patterns to be used, andeventually the actual leather materials to be used. The client must be able to trace the
edges of identical patterns to be able to stitch them together properly.
5. Will it be necessary for the patient to distinguish a figure or object from itsbackground?
- Yes, the client is needed to be able to distinguish the needle from the tablesurface, as well as be aware of the stitches and holes on the leather to determine the
distances of stitches during sewing.
6. Will the patient be required to use depth perception to do this task? Explain.- Yes, depth perception is necessary for the client to know just how far the leather
and the needle and thread are from each other, and from him/her, during sewing, aswell as the distance of the scissors from the pattern, and the leather, as well as from
his/her body, during cutting.
