Fall Prevention

on January 4, 2012

On January 4, Jennifer Edge presented a program on “Fall Prevention”. The title of her presentation was “What You Can Do to Increase Your Safety at Home and in the Community.”

Jennifer provided statistics on falls:

1. Across the nation, one third of older adults experience a fall every year. In 2005, 15,800 people died of fall-related injuries.

2. Over 65, you are 2X as likely to fall.

3. Over 75, you are 3X as likely to fall.

4. Over 85, you are 4X as likely to fall.

Jennifer’s recommendations are:

1. Regular exercise

2. Annual vision checks

3. Proper lighting, especially at night

4. Regular review of medications

5. De-Clutter (i.e., move things out of walkways and stairways, clear off kitchen counter)

6. Don’t rush

7. Clean up spills right away

8. Be cautious about floor surfaces that were waxed and shiny

9. Use grab bars in tubs, showers, and near toilet

10. Wear well-fitting shoes or slippers with non-skid soles

Jennifer is a Geriatric Care Manager with ElderLink, a cooperative program of Inova Health System, Fairfax Area Agency on Aging, and the Alzheimer’s Association, National Capital Area. She is also Program Coordinator of the Independent Living Project.

The Independent Living Project is a program presented by the Area Agency on Aging.

1. A free community outreach program to help older adults remain independent in their own homes.

2. A comprehensive program which includes exercise classes, educational seminars, and home visits.

3. Provide some safety equipment to participants who had home visits.

4. Appropriate referrals to community services, if needed

5. Follow-up calls, if needed

Sunshine Committee News

By Carolyn Willis

Myrtle Harper, age 82, of Alexandria, VA, passed away January 3, 2012. Myrtle was born on April 14, 1929 and grew up in Richmond, VA with five sisters and four brothers. She attended Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind. Myrtle’s life was forever changed when she was introduced to John Harper by Charles Dawson. They got married on August 27, 1966. They enjoyed traveling extensively. They visited England, Spain, Denmark and France during one of the Deaf Olympics in the 1970s arranged by Reuben Altizer. Myrtle gradually lost her sight and eventfully became blind around 1975. She was known for her independence. She went to Helen Keller School for the Deaf/Blind in Rochester, NY where she learned to read Braille, cook, and knit. She did almost anything by herself. She

was a bright and wonderful lady. She is survived by her husband, John Harper, and two of her siblings, Frank and Charlie Joyce. A scholarship fund was set up to honor Myrtle L. Harper in assistance of deaf-blind individuals. For those of you who are interested, please make checks payable to Deaf Interfaith with Memo line for Myrtle's Fund. Mail to Deaf-Blind Camp of Maryland, c/o Toby Witte-Dix, 911 Regina Drive, Baltimore, MD 21227.

For those of you who remember:

Wava Hambel, 95, Olathe, Kansas, passed away, Sunday January 8, 2012. She was born December 16, 1916 in Ruthven, Iowa. According to Elaine Shaffer, Wava was one of the founders of Happy Hands. Even after she moved away, she kept up membership in Happy Hands for many years. Wava’s family suggests memorial contributions to Olathe Deaf Club, 221 S. Chestnut Street, Olathe KS 66061.

Bonnie Teer Lee Burney, age 84, of Pleasant Grove, AL, passed away January 15, 2012. She attended Alabama School for the Deaf and Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. She was retired from the Washington Post newspaper at the end of her 25th year of employment in 1995 and moved to Alabama. She is survived by her husband, of 49 years, Charles W. Burney. Donations may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church for the Deaf, 3794 Crosshaven Drive, Birmingham AL 35223.

Updates:

On Wednesday, January 4, 2012, Thayer Dow accidently slipped and fell down when her cane hit the paper on the floor injuring her left arm. Thankfully there were no broken bones, but the fall caused tennis elbow which is a common name used for acute tendonitis in the tendon fibers that attach the forearm muscle to the elbow. She had to use slings on her arm for two weeks. She’s up and around and was able to resume playing cards at NVRC on January 19.

LeRoy Christian was admitted to the hospital with various issues several weeks ago. He has returned home and is resting. Send up prayers for him.

We have good news about John Harper. Bill Center saw John at his home and is doing well. John is able to get around, using either a walker or cane. Bless Bill as he has been taking John out for grocery shopping and ran some errands for him. Also John is getting his meals on wheels every workday.

No-Fuss French Toast (from Rachel Billings, Holland Michigan)

After a holiday party, I always have some leftover eggnog, which is delicious but very rich. Fortunately, it works perfectly for making French toast – just dip sliced bread in the eggnog instead of batter and fry as usual.

Oatmeal Spice Cookies

Serves: 3 dozen

1 cup shortening

1 cup white sugar

1 cup brown sugar

2 eggs

1 cup raisins

3 cups oatmeal

2 ½ cups flour

1 ½ Tablespoon each soda, salt, cinnamon

Dash nutmeg, clove

1 Tablespoon vanilla

Cream – Mix well. Dry – Mix well. Combine both. Mix well.

Spoon walnut size – roll in hand palm before put on sheet.

Flatten them.

Bake at 375 degrees for 12 minutes. Chill at least one hour or day.

HH UPDATES: Since July 2011, Happy Hands has undergone quite a number of changes. There are more people involved in making these changes. Many of these changes lie in our eHappy Hands newsletter. You will see that a calendar of events has been expanded to include other organizational activities. Pictures of recipes are now included. At our first Wednesday get-togethers, we have prizes. We also have “trivia” and some games. At our meeting on January 23, we covered these following items and decided on several things: 1. Complaints re: Closed Captioning on Cable TV and Area TV Station (handouts will be distributed at the

February 1st meeting; URLs will be included in the February issue of the Happy Hands newsletter). 2. Membership Form — Receipts should be given to members (new and renewal). Robert Whitworth will

work on Excel database. 3. Activities — March: Who Wears the Most Green, April: Easter Hat contest and Best Decorated Easter

Tie, and May: Election (new officers will take over after picnic in June). 4. Food — February: Rose Otterman will bring Chili, March: Beef Stew, April: undecided, May: Hawaiian,

and June: Picnic 5. Sunshine — Carolyn would like to be informed of any deaths, illness, etc. 6. Membership Dues — We decided to leave alone the issue of a different rate for out-of-towners. 7. Donations in memory of those who passed away? - We voted that that HH would not make any

donations. We will continue name plates for the plaque and send sympathy cards to families. 8. NVAD Survey — Kenny & her committee will develop a Happy Hands survey. Action items for you to vote on at the February 1st get-together at 11:30 AM sharp are #6 and #7. Although the Fine Tuners have acted on these two items, it is necessary for the membership to approve. OF IMPORTANCE, TOO.....There is a website about the 2013 Baltimore DSA convention: http://www.dsa2013baltimore.org/. It also includes information that 800 people have registered.
