The smell of warm French toast with scrambled eggs and fried potatoes, eating at a very unique location with a spectacular view, and most importantly, hanging out with your friends and fellow classmates is all what Senior Breakfast at Doral Academy is about. The Class of 2018 were anticipating this “Around the World” themed breakfast on January 19th at the Rusty Pelican. The salon was filled with excitement as the senior class got to celebrate all of their achievements so far in High School. From beginning to end, the atmosphere was filled with great music and even better company to share the moment with.

From a grand buffet that served every-thing from French toast, bacon, scram-bled eggs and muffins, to endless hours of dancing and entertaining party games, each Firebird found themselves wrapped up in different activities that promoted

unity among the Class of 2018. Dance offs and toilet paper dress making were only some of the games that allowed seniors the chance of winning a free gradbash or prom ticket, all thanks to the class sponsor, Janet Sardina. “It was a lot fun and the food was amazing” said Kathryn Pupo. Marilyn Tenoco expressed her morning at senior breakfast “the view was spectacular and had a lot of fun hanging out with my closest friend.”They also had a photo booth filled with decorative props which was at the seniors disposal to capture their unfor-gettable morning as memories. The seniors were also given custom cups that matched this year’s theme. The overall event was an unforgettable one, marked for the books.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

The first Valentine’s Day gift on this list is for mothers, heart kitchen towels. To make this gift you will need craft paint in colors of your choice (towels shown embrace the gold and bright pink trend with a bit of black), letter stencils, stencil pouncer (the one pictured is from a set of six or seven different sizes) or styrofoam headed paint-brush, double-sided tape, plain white kitchen towels made of cotton or linen, and polka dot stencil and painters tape (optional). 1. Wash and dry your towels, then press to make sure they’re nice and flat. Lay out your

towel.2. Take your letter sten-cils and arrange them on your towel as desired. Then created your heart stencil by folding a piece of heavy paper in half and cutting the shape.3. Load your stencil pouncer or brush with paint. Dab some of the paint off on a piece of cardboard. Begin to dab the pouncer or brush over your stencil. Let the first coat dry and add another for more saturated hues.4. Once paint is dry care-fully remove your stencil. Wash again on delicate setting without other clothes or items, then re-press. The second Valentine’s Day gift on the list is for fathers, pop popcorn card. To make this ador-able item you will need white card stock, copy pa-per or any paper of your

choosing, red permanent marker, an envelope, mod podge and a printable pop popcorn design. 1. Fold one sheet of card stock copy paper horizon-tally in half. 2. Print the printable pop popcorn design. Then spread mod podge of the paper and place the print design on the paper and spread some mod podge on top.3. Write the saying with the marker. The third Valentine’s Day gift on the list is for friends, butterfly treats. You will need a clear plas-tic bag, any type of candy, a colorful clothespin, googly eyes, pipe cleaners and glue. 1) Fill a snack bag 1/2 way with the m&m’s, tuck the zipper part under to hide it and tie it with the pipe cleaner to secure it.

2) Place your clothespin around the bag and pipe cleaner.3) Glue on googly eyes and shape the antennas however you would like. The fourth Valentine’s Day gift on the list is for girlfriends, love cactus. To make this simple item you will need a pink or white pail, a popsicle stick, glue stick, pebbles, a cactus and a cute sign.1) Put the cactus in the pail and add the pebbles on top of the soil.2) Print out a design and glue it to the popsicle stick.3) Once the glue dries, place the popsicle stick into the dirt.

Valentine’s is a day to ex-press your love and com-passion for others. What better way to show this admiration than through simply heart-warming gifts. This holiday evokes stress as we try to find the most meaningful and af-fordable gift for someone we hold highly. This list of gifts is adorable and easy-to-make, perfect for moth- ers, fathers, friends and lovers.

The fifth Valentine’s Day gift on the list is for boyfriends, Cupid arrow brownies. You will need brownie mix, toothpicks, a printable arrow design and a glue stick.1) Bake the brownies following the directions given on the box.2)Cut the brownies into heart shapes.3) Glue the printable arrows to the toothpicks.4) Stick the tooth picks on top of the brownies and enjoy.

Doral’s Rom-Com Recommendations

Valentine’s Day is coming up and what better way to cel-ebrate than to be snuggling up with your Valentine to a good romantic movie. Instead of tear-jerkers, here is a list of roman-tic comedies suggest-ed by Doral Academy students that they feel are the best for laugh-ing out loud with your significant other.

Juan Laguado said his favorite rom-com had to be Crazy, Stupid, Love. This movie re-volves around Cal (Steve Carell) whose perfect life falls apart when his wife Emily (Julianne Moore) has been unfaithful and wants a divorce. To get back into the dating game Cal has the help of self-styled player Jacob (Ryan Gosling) to be a hit with the ladies. When asked why this was his favorite, he responded, “It’s funny, cute and has Ryan Gos-ling!”

Another laugh-out-loud rom-com Laila Garcia had to say is 50 First Dates. She explained it was her favorite because “It’s super cute and Adam Sandler and Drew Bar-rymore have to be two of the funniest actors.” Henry (Adam Sandler) a playboy finally wants to settle down with Lucy (Drew Barrymore). But having a relationship with her becomes a bit diffi-cult when he realizes she suffers from short-term memory loss and every morning he must redo their first date. Sofia Racciatti loves How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days “because it shows how love is un-expected.” Matthew Mc-Conaughey stars in this

flick as Benjamin Barry, a ladies man who to win a big campaign bets that he can make a woman fall in love with him. While Kate Hudson as Andie Anderson, a columnist is writing an article on how to “lose a guy in ten days.” Their plans back-fire when they actually do fall in love.

Even Daniel Rojas who “usually does not watch rom-coms” says his go-to for Valentine’s Day has to be Silver Linings Playbook. This comedy romance drama has Pat, played by Bradley Coo-per, just released from a mental institution and liv-ing with his parents again. He plans on rebuilding his life to reunite with his wife who cheated on him. His plan is altered when he meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence) as she makes a deal with him to help him contact his wife if he is her dance partner for a dance competition. Their issues eventually make them fall in love with each other.

Rey Tamayo finds Mr. and Mrs. Smith his favorite because he says, “It’s very ironic because a couple trying to kill each other is a couple in love.” This movie with Holly-wood couple Brad Pitt

and Angelina Jolie has them as one in a mundane marriage. But what they do not know is each of them is an assassin work-ing for a different agency. When their assignment is to kill each other, their marriage is explosively reignited.Lastly, Cindy Alvarez and Bianca Roa both agreed in The Back-up Plan being their favorite. Jennifer Lopez is Zoe, a woman tired of waiting for Mr. Right who de-cides to go to the sperm bank to get pregnant. Although on the same day after her appointment she ends up meeting Stan (Alex O’Loughlin). After realizing her unexpected behavior is because of her pregnancy he decides to commit to their relation-

ship. But as her due date approaches they realize they are not as compat-ible as they seem. Roa said she loved how “she planned on not having a happy ending, but she did.”This list of rom-coms will be sure to make your Valentine’s Day enjoyable and hilari-ous.

Fifty Shades FreedThe dramatic romance franchise of Fifty Shades released its fi-nal chapter this February 9th. Fifty Shades Freed bittersweetly wraps the series by following the events of Fifty Shades Darker, Christian and Ana are now mar-ried. However, Ana’s life will be threatened when her former boss, Jack Hyde, swears revenge for be-ing fired from SIP. Elena also re-turns to haunt the happy couple, attempting to make their lives troublesome. Despite all this angst, the book to film phenome-non will definitely have a happy ending. Language Arts instructor Carolina Rudman said, “I’m very excited to see how Christian and Ana’s married life will turn out. Valentine’s Day will definitely be one for the girls to hit the the-atre.” Speaking for all us Fifty Shades fans, we can all agree on the fact that we are more than ready to finally fall in love with this last chapter of Ana and her Fifty’s new life together.

Love, SimonLove, Simon is based on a nov-el by Becky Albertalli, the film introduces a seventeen year old boy who is trying to figure out how to tell his friends and fam-ily that he is gay. As the film goes on, he falls in love with an anonymous online user and he eventually works on finding out who this classmate is. Following these events, Simon’s life chang-es drastically, fans of the book are quite excited that this movie is coming out. Christopher Cepeda said, “It’s not very common for a movie to touch base on this type of subject and that’s important and meaningful to some.” The film tries to portray how being gay is not a problem and could actually lead to new, beautiful beginnings.

Sherlock GnomesGnomeo & Juliet was a diverting enough bit of fun family ‘toon action when it premiered in 2011. And since then, word has been out about the sequel in the works. It’s finally on its way this year, and the first trailer for the film, Sherlock Gnomes, is now out. Our very own Firebird Ariana Larro-sa said, “I am very excited to watch this movie, I loved the first one so I’m sure I’m going to love this one.” This time around, the story finds Gnomeo and Juliet still happily coupled up. No need to spoil more but let’s just say it’s a very lov-ey dovey movie, which is perfect since Valentine’s Day is here.

A classic Italian dish that combines all the flavors of Rome in a few simple ingredients. With so few ingredients it’s practical and easy to make for any amateur cook. IngredientsKosher salt6 oz. pasta (such as egg tagliolini, bucatini, or spaghetti)3 Tbsp. unsalted butter, cubed, divided1 tsp. freshly cracked black pepper3/4 cup finely grated Gra-na Padano or Parmesan

1/3 cup finely grated PecorinoRecipe PreparationBring 3 quarts water to a boil in a 5-qt. pot. Season with salt; add pasta and cook, stirring occasional-ly, until about 2 minutes before tender. Drain, reserving 3/4 cup pasta cooking water.Meanwhile, melt 2 Tbsp. butter in a large heavy skillet over medium heat. Add pepper and cook, swirling pan, until toast-ed, about 1 minute.Add 1/2 cup reserved pasta water to skillet and bring to a simmer. Add pasta and remaining butter. Reduce heat to low and add Grana Padano, stirring and tossing with tongs until melted. Re-move pan from heat; add Pecorino, stirring and tossing until cheese melts, sauce coats the pasta, and pasta is al dente. (Add more pasta water if sauce seems dry.) Transfer pasta to warm bowls and serve.

Veal Saltimbocca Another simple recipe from Rome, the recipe literally means “veal jump-in-your-mouth.” it’s not a bad description, thin cutlets of veal topped with prosciutto and sage provide a deeply satisfy-ing flavor combination. Ingredients8 veal cutlets (about 1 pound; 450g)Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper8 large, thin slices pro-sciutto (about 1/4 pound; 115g)1 bunch fresh sage, divid-ed (about 1/4 ounce; 7g)Cornstarch, for dredging (about 1/2 cup)3 tablespoons (45ml) extra-virgin olive oil, divided2 tablespoons (30g) un-salted butter1/3 cup (80ml) dry white wineFresh juice from 1 lemon, to taste1 teaspoon soy sauce (5ml), preferably usuku-chi (light soy sauce) (optional; see note)Recipe PreparationArrange cutlets on a work surface, cover with a sheet or two of plastic wrap, and pound each with a meat pounder or the bottom of a small heavy saucepan or skillet until no more than 1/4-

immediately. Transfer to a clean platter. Lower heat at any time while cook-ing the cutlets to prevent burning.Add remaining one table-spoon olive oil to the skil-let. Add remaining four veal cutlets and repeat as in Step 5, then transfer to the platter.Lower heat to medi-um-low and add butter and a few sprigs of sage to the skillet and cook until butter is melted. Add white wine. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring and scraping up any browned bits, then continue to cook, stirring and swirling constantly, until sauce is emulsified and slightly thickened (exact time can vary significantly depending on your skillet size and burner power; increase the heat at any time if it seems to be taking too long, or lower the heat if it’s reducing too quickly).Season with salt and pepper, then stir in one teaspoon of lemon juice. Taste and add another tea-spoon (or more) of lemon juice, if desired. Stir in soy sauce, if using. If the sauce breaks at any point, whisk in a tablespoon or two of water to bring it back together. Discard sage sprigs. Pour sauce all over veal cutlets and serve right away.

Crepes Suzette

Credit for inventing crepes Suzette is claimed by French restaurateur Henri Charpentier. In 1894, at age 14 and while an assistant waiter, accidentally set a sauce aflame when serving dessert to the Prince of Wales. Once the fire sub-sided, the sauce was so delicious that the prince asked that the dish be named for a young girl in his entourage, Suzette. Ingredients

Crepes2 large eggs3/4 cup all-purpose flour1/2 cup milk1/8 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon sugar1/3 cup cold water1 tablespoon canola oil1 tablespoon melted unsalted butter, plus more butter for the skillet

Orange Butter6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened, plus more for buttering1/4 cup plus 2 table-spoons sugar, plus more for sprinkling1 tablespoon finely grated orange zest1/3 cup fresh orange juice

Courtesy of nyt.com

1/4 cup Grand Marnier2 tablespoons Cognac

Recipe PreparationIn a medium bowl, whisk together the eggs, flour, milk, salt and sugar until smooth; the batter will be thick. Whisk in the water, oil and melted butter. Heat a 6-inch crêpe pan or nonstick skillet and rub with a little butter. Add 2 tablespoons of the batter and tilt the skillet to distribute the batter evenly, pouring any excess batter back into the bowl. Cook over moderately high heat until the edges of the crêpe curl up and start to brown, 45 seconds. Flip the crêpe and cook for 10 seconds longer, until a few brown spots appear on the bottom. Tap the crêpe out onto a baking sheet . Repeat with the remaining batter to make 12 crêpes, buttering the skillet a few times as necessary. In a mini food processor, blend the 6 tablespoons of butter with 1/4 cup of the sugar and the orange zest. With the machine on, gradually add the orange juice until incorporated. Preheat the broiler. Butter a large rimmed baking sheet and sprinkle light-ly with sugar. Place 2 rounded teaspoons of the orange butter in the center of each crêpe. Fold the

crêpes in half and in half again to form triangles; arrange on the prepared baking sheet, pointing them in the same direc-tion and overlapping slightly. Sprinkle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar and broil on the

middle shelf of the oven until they be-gin to caramelize, about 2 minutes. Using a long spat-ula, transfer the crêpes to a heat-proof platter.

Mousse Au Citron (Lemon Mousse) This rich, silky mousse brightened with tangy lemons makes an elegant end to a meal. Ingredients8 eggs, 4 whole and 4 separated into yolks and whites1¼ cup sugar, separated½ tablespoon salt4 lemons, juiced and zested1 cup heavy cream1 tablespoon vanilla extract DirectionsWhisk 4 whole eggs, and 4 yolks with 1 cup sugar in a sauce pot. inch thick throughout. Season lightly on one side only with salt and pepper.Flip veal cutlets so that the salted side is down. Pick eight of the the larg-est sage leaves from your bunch and lay one in the center of each cutlet. If the sage leaves are small, use two per cutlet.Lay a slice of prosciut-to on top of each cutlet, sandwiching the sage leaves flat between them. Using two wooden tooth-picks per cutlet, fasten the prosciutto to the cutlets (the easiest way to do this is to push the toothpicks down through the prosciutto and just into the veal, then back up through the prosciutto again, much like fasten-ing them together with a safety pin).Pour about 1/2 cup of cornstarch into a wide, shallow bowl. Dredge the underside of each prosciutto-topped cutlet in the cornstarch, shaking off the excess. In a large skillet or sauté pan, heat two tablespoons olive oil over high heat until shimmering. Add four of the cutlets, pro-sciutto-side up, and cook, swirling the pan occasion-ally, until the cutlets are lightly browned on the bottom and the last traces of pink are visible on top at the edges. Using a thin metal spatula, flip all of the cutlets prosciutto-side down, then flip them back

Gyudon (Beef and Rice Bowl)

If ramen is like the hamburger of Japan, gyudon—steamed rice topped with beef and onions simmered in sake and soy sauce—is its hot dog: a quick, easy meal that’s equally at home at the food court or on your kitchen table.Ingredients1 small onion, slivered (about 4 ounces; 120g)1/2 cup (120ml) dashi1/4 cup (60ml) dry sake2 tablespoons (30ml) soy sauce1 tablespoon (12g) sugar, plus more to taste1/2 pound (225g) thinly shaved beef ribeye or chuck steak1 teaspoon (5ml) grated

fresh gingerSaltTo Serve:2 cups cooked white rice2 poached eggs (optional)Sliced scallionsDirectionsCombine onion, dashi, sake, soy sauce and sugar in a medium saucepan or saucier and bring to

a simmer over medium heat. Cook, stirring oc-casionally until onion is softened, about 5 minutes.Add beef and cook, stir-ring until beef is cooked through and liquid has reduced down to an intensely flavored broth, about 5 minutes. Stir in ginger and simmer for 1 minute longer. Adjust seasoning with salt and sugar to taste.Divide rice between 2 to 3 bowls and top with beef and sauce mixture. Garnish each bowl with a poached egg (if using), sliced scallions, be-ni-shoga, and togarashi. Serve immediately.

OmuriceOmurice is one of those delicious standby recipes that is just so darn easy to make. Even in an ingredi-ents pinch, it works with just about anything. Ingredients3 tablespoons ketchup2 tablespoons chicken stock, vegetable stock or water1 tablespoon vegetable oil6 button mushrooms chopped1/4 cup onions finely chopped1 small carrot diced1/4 cup frozen peas thawed2 cups cooked short grain Japanese rice salt and pepper to tasteFor the omelette:4 large eggs2 tablespoons water1 tablespoon vegetable oilInstructionsWhisk ketchup and stock in a bowl and set aside. In a deep skillet over medium/high heat, add oil and mushrooms. Cook for 4-5 minutes, or until the water from the mush-rooms has evaporated.Add onions, carrots and peas and cook for 3 min-utes, or until carrots are tender but still yield a soft crunch.Add rice and break it up using a plastic or wooden paddle. Mix well and add ketchup mixture. Mix well until the rice is even-ly colored. Turn the heat to the lowest temperature and season with a little

salt and pepper. Making the omelettes:In a separate mixing bowl, whisk 2 eggs and 1 tablespoon water. In a frying pan over high heat, add vegetable oil and swirl to evenly coat the bottom. When the oil is hot, add the egg mix-ture and swirl around to create a round omelette. When the omelette is mostly cooked (slightly runny top), lower the heat to low.Add half of the rice mix-ture in the center of the omelette and gently fold each side toward the cen-ter. It doesn’t have to en-tirely cover the rice, just enough that you can fold a little of the omelet over the rice. Place a plate on top of the pan (make sure it’s touching the pan, flat) and quickly flip the pan so the omelette falls onto the plate. Top with a zig zag ketchup pattern and serve.Repeat the same step for the second omurice omelette.

Ahh, Valentine’s Day: the day of young love and the excuse to get free gifts and chocolate! Well, not for us unfortunate enough to be single - oh the horror! But not to worry, as it’s 2018 and times have changed.

1. Me, Myself, and I

Whether you’re a girl or a boy or just a person, you don’t need a significant other. You can take yourself to the mov-ies, to eat ice cream, and scream at the T.V. when rom coms come on (trust me, nobody likes those).

2. Gifts

Guess what? You can also buy yourself a gift and you can splurge too! Plus, chocolate is always 40% off the day after Valentine’s, so stock up on your stash to have yourself a cheat day.

3. Grease is the Word

Unlike most relationships in life, not everyone’s love life is like Sandy and Danny. So, you’re not missing out on those terrible fights and having to lie about your gift… or a Hallmark card like Kenickie said.

4. Life Doesn’t Revolve Around Relationships

Believe it or not, relationships ar-en’t the center of the universe and don’t make the world go round. Build yourself and give yourself the love you know you deserve.

5. You

You weren’t born attached to someone (or at least I hope not), so you came into this world yourself and can keep going on that way until that certain someone comes for you. Be-lieve in yourself, treat

yourself right, and know you are worthy.

If all else fails, sit on the couch, turn the lights off and the T.V. on, grab a snack (preferably the 40% off chocolate from CVS) and watch the only movie that mat-ters… The Notebook.

LOOK ONE: GO SEXY WITH A CROPPED 2

PIECE SETIt’s always good to match on Valentine’s Day, your partner will greatly appreciate it. Like this cute grey two piece set the tank top is cropped but you’ll dress it with a high waist tight skirt. It has a sexy slit in the middle. Since the set is grey it’s al-ways great to have a pop of color like this baby pink cardigan. You finish off the look with a pair of strappy pumps to showcase your legs.

LOOK TWO: SPORT SOME

WHITE SKINNY JEANS WITH

AN OVERSIZED SWEATER

If you don’t want to go all out you can keep it sim-ple with a pair of white skinny jeans. These jeans will keep you tight and secure and show off your curves. You can match these skinny jeans with an oversized light pink sweat-er. An oversized sweater is always cute but best when you wear them out to eat and get too full. To top it off you should always match your heels with your jeans a pair of white pumps are always best.
