Product Design Studio 2011 Fixed Freestyle Frameset Design

TRANSCRIPT

Feared BikesEst. 2011

Background Its exciting to be able to learn tricks on an object that was never used for tricks before. The fixed gear drivetrain makes the learning curve for freestyle fixed gear way higher than most action sports. - Mike Schmitt

Design the ‘ultimate’ fixed gear freestyle frameset for the serious rider. Brief:

The sport’s still way young and most people, myself included, are still trying to figure out the basics. - Antonyo Wothe

“So, what is Fixed Gear Freestyle?”

Unlike other bikes, the fixed gear bicycle can not coast.

Meeting riders’ requests

In order to design a bike for the serious rider, I had to learn what was important to those riders. Research is how I validate my design.

The Challenge:- My research yielded that the riders wanted a frame that was:

- smaller

- stiffer

- lighter

- not too small to ride distances on

- All riders were opposed to drastic changes and heavy styling.

- The most important facor is that the frame is comfortable and

durable.

- The second most important factor is that the geometry, or

silhouette, of the frame looks good.

In summary: LOTS of constraints to work with

Looking at my bike gets me wanting to ride. Every time I walk past it in my house I pick it up and hold the bars and sit on it.- Steven Jensen

Infernal heat treatment - Each frame is heat treat treated, a process which draws the carbon to

the outer walls of the steel tubing making for a more rigid, durable structure.

Featherlight tubing - By downsizing the outer diameter of the tubing, thanks to the new profile, strength was able to be achieved while saving weight!

Wishbone stays - Wishbone seat and chain stays make for a durable, rigid rear triangle, as well as maximizing tire clearance without crimping the chain stays.

Bomb-proof - With the new tubing established to deliver maximum strength, it boasts a yield strength nearly 5 times that of conventional tubing.

Lifeline Paint - Stress indication paint changes color when its substraight is bent, or stressed to the point of distorition, noting any potentially dangerous damage.

I’ve always been drawn to the more unconventional sports. The fixed gear bike is beautiful, and the adrenaline of freestyle riding is gratifying. - Me (will gibbons)
