One of the great thingsabout home shows ishow they can inspire youto want to make im-provements to yourhome. Sometimes, how-ever, the enthusiasm andinspiration can fade afteryou make your wayhome. AltaOne FederalCredit Union will haveyour back at this year’sHome and Leisure Showwith an onsite specialist

available throughout theevent to help make yourdreams a reality.

“We have a number ofdifferent products thatcan help people withhome improvementplans,” said AltaOneMortgage Loan OfficerConnor Gowin. “We tryto be flexible with peopleand want to be a resourcefor them.”

Whether it’s makingrepairs, upgrading yourhome or adding featuressuch as a pool or solar

power, AltaOne has op-tions to help. Gowin saidAltaOne recognizes thatthe process of getting aloan can sometimes beintimidating and is oneof the reasons it’ll haverepresentation at theshow.

“It’s great if people areable to meet me in amore relaxed environ-ment,” he said. “Even ifthey don’t move forwardwith their plans rightaway, they’ll have a faceto go along with the

name when they eventu-ally move forward withthose plans.”

Gowin said he’d be ableto answer any questionsregarding the varioustypes of loan productsand the process of ob-taining those loans. Ifyou dream of the home,AltaOne will try to makeyour dream come true.

“I’ll be available to con-sult with existing mem-bers and meet newclients and prospectivemembers,” he said. “If it involves any type of

home improvementproduct, we have theloan product that canhelp.”

As your neighbor andfriend, Gowin said Al-taOne is available to helpyou reach your dream ofhome ownership. Whenyou obtain a home loanfrom AltaOne FederalCredit Union, you willhave peace of mindknowing your mortgagesare solid and strong.

“If you have any ques-tions at all, come on outand talk to me,” he said.

Purchase, refinanceand construction loansare some of the standardchoices, but there areother options.

If you are in the marketfor credit, a home equityplan might be right foryou. You can tap intoyour home’s equity to ob-tain much-needed fundsfor major expenses suchas education, remodel-

ing or vacations. Beforemaking a decision, how-ever, you should weighcarefully the costs of ahome equity line againstthe benefits. Shop for thecredit terms that bestmeet your borrowingneeds without posing un-due financial risks.

Every morning, BCCorbin rocks local air-waves, mixing in an eclec-tic mix of music withcommentary, local news, and friendly banter fromtime to time.

His purpose: give lis-teners a laugh as theyslog on to work, provid-ing another perk along-side their morning coffeethrough “BC in the Morn-ing,” running from 6-9a.m. every weekday on92.7 Qlite.

“When you come towork, you’re supposed tobe happy and smiling —‘Hey, George, Frank,’ orwhatever — that getsyour day started off,”Corbin said. “After 9:00or so, whatever happensto your day, I can’t controlthat. But I can control, from six to nine, howyour day is going to be.”

Behind-the-scenes, themorning show comesfrom Adelman Broad-casting’s small-but-mighty studio on BalsamStreet. Home to five dif-ferent radio stations —92.7 Qlite, Kickin’ Coun-try 87.7, Nash Icon 98.5,KLOA 1240AM (CBSSports Radio), and KoolGold 1360AM — the fo-cus is on Qlite during theearly morning. Through-out the day, three em-ployees control the sta-tion’s nuts and bolts:Corbin, Alexis Zubia, andVinnie Hernandez.

Corbin is not only thelone talent in the station, but he is also the loneengineer. While speak-ing with his listeners, hisarms move fluidly, whether it is searchingfor the next sound effector loading up the nextpromo spot. At times, itlooks like he has three orfour arms with how fasthe goes.

Despite all of the move-ment and hubbub in theback studio, a smile re-

mains pasted on Corbin’sface.

“I’m here for the pleas-ure and the listening,” hesaid, “and sometimes forthe educational part ofit too.”

That includes Corbin’sfavorite segment: TheImpossible Question. Each morning, Corbinprovides a question thatmakes the listeners think.(“You can’t just useGoogle or Wikipedia forthese,” he said.) Listenerscall in and provide theirguesses. If incorrect, theygotta hang up and tryagain. If correct, thenthey receive a prize ofthat day.

But when it comes tothe Impossible Question,it’s more than just theprize.

“They didn’t care aboutthe prize; they just want-ed to see if they couldbeat the DJ,” Corbin said.“That was the whole keything behind it. It wasbasically a verbal chal-lenge, and people caughton to it. That’s why theImpossible Question hasbeen running as long as ithas because people catchon to things and theyknow.”

Beginnings“BC in the Morning”

started from an idea yearsago, that stemmed fromCorbin’s outgoing nature.

“My grandpa used totell me as a kid, ‘Son, youtalk a lot. You oughta bea preacher.’ And I knew Iwas not going to be that;it was not in my forte,”Corbin said. “I enjoy in-teracting. I like comingup with funny things andbeing a stand-up comedi-an back in the day.”

A former firefighter inNorthern California,Corbin got into radioabout 35 years ago. Aftermoving to the HighDesert and residing inthe Indian Wells Valleyfor a few years, as Corbinput it, Ridgecrest wasready for the “next gener-ation of radio.” The mis-

sion was to give Ridge-crest that big-city feel ofhaving its own home-grown morning radioprogram — or any pro-gram, for that matter.

The program first airedin 2002 and has beenrunning since. The onlynoticeable difference inthe show, other than itssegments, is the prepara-tion time.

“It’s still the sameamount of work,” Corbinsaid, “but I just shrink itdown.”

Corbin commutes fromCalifornia City each day, arriving in Ridgecrest by5 a.m. In the hour beforethe show begins, he setsup his music catalog andgathers the local and na-tional news. After 9 a.m.,Corbin sets his catalog ofmusic for the rest of theday, carrying the stationuntil 6 a.m. the next day.

“I’m doing somethingeven between songs,” hesaid. “I’m doing news orchecking this or that, ormaking sure I’m alwaysprepping for the next

break when I turn on thenext microphone.”

As soon as three yearsago, Corbin used to beon the radio seven days aweek.

“I loved it. My wife, onthe other hand, didn’tparticularly enjoy it,” hesaid with a laugh. “I lovedoing what I do. I love it.”

The Home andLeisure Show

92.7 Qlite will be airinglive from the Home andLeisure Show on Satur-day from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Itwill feature giveaways, such as Knott’s BerryFarm tickets and T-shirts.

“One of the things Iwant to do is be able tointeract with the peoplecoming up to our booth,”Corbin said. “There arenew businesses that arein town, so this gives mean opportunity to comeup to them … and basical-ly be able to do an on-the-spot interview rightthere.”

Corbin also plans forthis to be an educational

opportunity for the town,to learn more about theradio station and how itserves the community.

“We have been aroundfor a very, very long time, and we’ve helped thecommunity a lot,” Corbinsaid. “A lot of people don’tunderstand that. So thisis our chance to show youwhat we can do.”

The future of radioAs for the future of ra-

dio in Ridgecrest, Corbinlisted off some things thathe would like to see in thestation: more women inradio and to grow as thecity grows. He mentionedPinney Pool and the casi-no debate in town as mo-ments when the radio, asa media entity, steppedup to the role of airingboth sides of the issue …or, at least, try to.

“Pro and con — bring iton,” he said. “Becausethat’s what makes what Icall a good line of com-munication. There are al-ways people who are go-ing to be against some-

thing and people who aregoing to be for it. So, ifyou get both sides of thestory, then you can makeup your mind on whichway you want to go withit.”

While radio is still alegacy medium, keepingcurrent with what is go-ing on is the surefire wayto remain relevant.

“My ear’s to theground,” Corbin said. “Ispend a lot of time read-ing the newspaper — thatkeeps me with what’s go-ing on with who. Unfor-tunately, a lot of peopledon’t like listening to thenews, but I have to be-cause what goes on withnews determines how myshow is going to be like.”

But the biggest thingwith radio: remember,it’s just entertainment.

“Whether it be a hip-hop show, the show I do,it’s still entertaining,”Corbin said. “So, the con-tent that you hear, youhave to determine anddecipher how you want toreceive it.”

Bernie’s Landscaping to present a sneak peek of its showroom

Bernie’s Landscapingwill be giving attendeesat the Home and LeisureShow a sneak peek ofwhat’s to come: a brilliantshowroom.

“We’re going to havesome real nice landscapeboulders, a shade struc-ture to show what kind ofshade structures we cando in the yard, some syn-thetic turf, live plants, andsome giveaways,” saidowner Bernie Mondragon.

This year’s display, Mon-dragon said, will be biggerand better than last year, which he credits due tomore preparation.

“I’ve put more time intoputting together this dis-play,” he said. “I’ve talkedto a few of my vendors, and they’re all going tohelp out and give me somestuff to show off.”

That includes turf sam-ples, rock samples, andpictures of recent work.Stamped concrete hasbeen the most popularproject, such as for walk-ways or patio areas.

“It’s basically concretewith a stamp, so it’s tex-tured, it’s colored — differ-ent than just plain con-crete,” Mondragon said.

Eventually, the displayat the Home and LeisureShow will wind up, on alarger scale, at Bernie’sLandscaping’s main store-front on Upjohn Avenue. The Graaf Street locationstill exists, but will most-ly be used for operationalpurposes, while the Up-john spot provides aninviting atmosphere for

customers. Currently, theshowroom is a “work inprogress,” but is expectedto pick up this year.

“I’m hoping to get theshowroom completedwithin the next couple ofmonths after the HomeShow,” Mondragon said.“There are a lot of peoplewho like to come in andtalk about their ideas.”

Mondragon, himself, takes a hands-on ap-proach to the business, even including having anemergency number thatconnects to his cell phonefor egregious circum-stances.

“I’ve learned over theyears that I have to havethe right people and trustthem to do the job right,”Mondragon said. Threemornings a week, he isout with his crew, whetherit is laying turf down orbringing material; thoseafternoons, he is meetingwith customers and doingestimates. The other twodays, he is facilitating thework for his crew.

“Just physically beingthere with them so theycan see that I’m not just aguy sitting in the officemaking money off ofthem,” he said.

As spring kicks off, so domany landscaping proj-ects, mostly planting. “Wedo it year-round, butthere’s something aboutspring where everybodywants new plants, newtrees.”

Education — especiallywhen it comes to land-scaping in the MojaveDesert — is a crucial partof this. A few customerswho may not have beenraised in Ridgecrestwouldn’t understand the

harsh conditions summerbrings to certain plants.

“That’s where my ex-pertise comes into play,”Mondragon said. “Wehave a lot of people whoare moving to the area towork on base or other dif-ferent industries in town… so they bring their ownideas and plants that theywant to plant. I try to ed-ucate the customer.”

Alongside education is aguarantee: “If I plant atree, and it dies in twomonths, I’ll go ahead andreplace it.”

Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping, or desertlandscaping, has pickedup steam in the communi-

ty — but mostly for main-tenance reasons ratherthan cutting down on wa-ter.

“People who have themoney for it will pay tokeep a green lawn,” Mon-dragon said. “It’s mostlythe maintenance. Synthet-ic turf is maintenance-free; you just have to blowit off every one or twoweeks.”

But that does not meanit’s just a “set it and forgetit” deal. Xeriscaping, al-though not as much astraditional landscaping, has its maintenance needs.

“A lot of people thinkthat xeriscaping the yardmeans ‘zero,’ ” Mondragonsaid, holding his hand up

to signal the number zero.“Plants still need to betrimmed and pruned. Ifyou live in a neighbor-hood and a neighbor has500 pine trees, the pineneedles are going to blowinto your yard.”

Mondragon said that hewould see customers in-stall xeriscaping, but thelack of follow-up mainte-nance would cause theyard to resemble a jungle.

“A few of those cus-tomers, I would start of-fering a free cleanup,”Mondragon said, “andthen I would talk to themand tell them that eventhough it’s xeriscape, youstill have to maintain it.The maintenance will

check for irrigation —make sure everything isworking properly — we’lltrim the plants accord-ingly, and just basicallypick up debris that mightnot even be from youryard. It could be from theneighbor’s yard or theneighborhood.”

Mondragon, who is alsoa member of the Ridge-crest Chamber of Com-merce board of directors, gave a positive economicoutlook for the area.

“I think the economy intown is doing really well,”he said. “We have a lot ofnew people coming in,and I predict good busi-ness — for all the con-tractors, not just me.”

Offset sinks

Pros: The term “offset sinks” really refersto two different sink styles: 1) a doublebowl, with one full-size and one smallerbowl or 2) a sink whose drain is locatednear the edge or directly under the faucet, rather than smack in the middle. An offsetdouble-bowl sink gives the advantages ofa traditional double bowl, with a slimmerprofile, while an offset drain makes formore usable space on the sink bottom, aswell as in the cabinet below (because thedrainpipe is further back than the norm).

Cons: An offset-drain sink often emptiesa bit more slowly than the standard. Theplumbing is harder to reach, complicatinginstallation and repair.

Double-bowl sinks

Pros: Double-bowl sinks are the long-time favorite of American homeowners.A divided kitchen sink offers the con-venience of separate bowls for variouschores — think washing, rinsing, anddrip-drying — while bringing statement-making color to your kitchen. With adouble-bowl sink, you can also use oneside for food prep, as you soak dirty potsin the other. And if you’re planning to replace onlyyour sink, chances are a double bowl will

be the best fit for the opening in yourcounter.

Cons: Each individual bowl in a double-bowl sink may not be wide or deepenough for tasks like cleaning large pansor bathing your baby.A great alternative is to purchase a dou-ble-bowl sink with a divide feature; thislow-divider sink style still allows home-owners separation, yet provides room forlarger items within the sink.

Single-bowl sinks

Pros: Single-bowl sinks allow you to soakand wash large items such as Dutch ovensand baking sheets with ease. Althoughthese sinks may be used in any kitchen, they are especially appropriate for a smallkitchen remodel, where every inch ofcounter space is precious.

Cons: Single bowls are spacious and deep;

however, they don’t allow for separation— of dirty from clean dishes or food prepfrom cleanup, to name just two examples— and aren’t for every homeowner whenit comes to kitchen sinks.

Farmhouse sinks

Pros: Though farmhouse sinks (alsoknown as apron front sinks) are tradi-tionally made of fireclay or cast iron, manufacturers have begun producingstainless steel and quartz farmhousesinks, too. This means homeowners nowhave a variety of materials and state-ment-making color choices to match theirpersonal design style. Fireclay farmhousesinks offer timeless appeal with long-lasting durability and shine.

Cons: Due to their size and weight, farm-house sinks are more complex to installthan undermount or top mount sinks; besure to find a contractor who’s experi-enced with this style.Homeowners may worry that specificfarmhouse trends will fade in and out offashion quickly. However, you can findfarmhouse sinks that allow you flexibilityto change the color and material of yoursink face in minutes.

Island-prep sinks

Pros: Installing an island-prep sink isgreat when you spend a lot of time in thekitchen.Prep sinks streamline your kitchen routine— ideal during a holiday cooking rush, when you need extra space for dinnerparty preparation, or simply to store andprep cocktails or other drinks. They can also add a designer touch, inmaterials like quartz luxe and copper.

Cons: Island sink installation is an extraexpense and gobbles up countertop “realestate.” Go this route only if you foreseethat you will actually end up using theprep sink.

HOME IMPROVE-MENT

Easy front door fixesto add curb appeal

According to DIYNet-work.com a bright newcoat of paint and an eye-catching door knob canpunch up the design ofthe front of your house. Acan of exterior paint willcost you no more than$30 a gallon and paintingyour front door can addsome needed brightness ifyou pick a bold color thatmakes your house stickout. Meanwhile, you haveendless options and priceranges for a new doorknob. Try one with cam-eras or numerical codes,or if you’re seeking a low-tech option, just updatethe color from a dated, too shiny color to a dark,oil-rubbed metal.

REAL ESTATE

Follow the 28/36 ruleto find ideal mortgage

Not sure how muchhome you can afford? Ac-cording to realtor.com,one way to figure this outis to follow the 28/36rule.

The “28” in the ratiorefers to your monthlyhousing payment (yourmortgage plus home in-surance and property tax-es). The total of whichshouldn’t be more than28% of your gross (beforetaxes) monthly income. For example, if your grossmonthly income is$5,000, you would multi-ply that by 0.28 (28 per-cent), which equals$1,400. That number isthe recommended maxi-mum amount yourmonthly housing pay-ment should be.

The “36” refers to yourdebt-to-income ratio. This ratio compares your

debt to your income. Thisratio should be “no morethan 36 percent. Expertswarn that going past thisthreshold is a risky as youcould end up with a housethat, over time, drives youeven deeper into debt asyou pay for maintenanceand repairs.

CLEANINGMake your house smell

great with DIY potpour-ri

Sometimes makingyour house smell great isjust a matter of raidingthe spice cabinet and fruitbowl. Take for instancecleanmyspace.com’s DIYpotpourri. First you takeslices of fruit such asgrapefruit, oranges or ap-ples, add as well as vari-ous herbs — ground cin-namon or a cinnamonstick, rosemary, thyme, nutmeg. Then add to asmall saucepan alongwith a cup or so of water.Bring to a boil, then letsimmer on low for hours.Add more water as need-ed to keep the liquid fromboiling away. It can evenbe reused. After the mix-ture has cooled, pour itinto a mason jar and storeit in the fridge. Reheat onstove a few times as need-ed.

GARDENING

When to start a springgarden

Even though outdoortemperatures are low andthere may even be snowon the ground, now is agood time to plan yourspring and summer gar-den. First find the springfrost date for your area byg o i n gto www.almanac.com/gardening/frostdates/states.Then check the seedpackets for what you wantto grow. Some items, forexample tomatoes, sug-

gest you start the seedsindoors 6- 8 weeks beforethe last expected springfrost date then transplantoutside.
