Senior Infants Work Plan May 18th – 22nd
Dear Parents/Guardians,
I will set some work from the books. I will continue also to offer other work. Talking is a huge part of learning. Talk about the signs of summer in the garden/outside. Encourage children in
asking and answering questions. The work is set out over the whole week. Please do as much as your child is comfortable with. All the work is on these pages, these can be printed off or written out on blank paper. Some of the work, can be
pointed at on the screen, if that suits best. As always I wish to stress the importance of play time. If you child is playing away by themselves or with their
siblings, that is fantastic. Don’t forget I can be contacted by email at [email protected]

English Poem of the Week:
Five Little Bees 1 little bee flew and flew,
He met a friend and that made 2. 2 little bees, busy as could be,
Along came another and that made 3. 3 little bees, wanted one more,
Found one soon and that made 4. 4 little bees, going to the hive,
Saw their brother and that made 5. 5 little bees working every hour,
Buzz away, bees and find another flower.
Child reading: Do this every day please – It’s the most important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds - Phonics Group 4 of our letter sounds:
ai j oa ie ee or
Day 1: (Check these sounds every day – Mon to Fri)
Ø Print out these sounds or write them out on a piece of paper. – This week - the red ones in detail. Ø Ask your child to say each sound
******** Remember when two tough guys (vowels) come together the first one is shouting out his name so the second one stays quiet …… Ai ………….Ee. ***********
Ø Word lists to call out – use the words in the boxes below.
Day 1:
Ø Concentrate on the “j” word list. Ø Get your child to write the words out on a piece of paper and draw the pictures that match them. Ø Check the words every day.
Day 2:
Ø See below – Work on our “ai” sound.
Day 3:
Ø See below – Work on our “ee” sound.
Extra Challenge:
Ø In your copy - Write out some of the words in the wordlist. If it will help they can draw a matching picture. Ø Some children can copy the words in the list. Ø Some children can listen to the parent read out the words for them to write without looking at the word.
Day 1:
Word List (Group 4 “j”):
jam jet jar jog job jug
Ø Ask your child to wobble like a jelly on a plate while saying their “j” sound (if unsure, please check YouTube)
Questions:
After saying the question – say the “j” sound to help them start the word.
Ø I put this on my bread? The jam is stored in this? Ø We fly in the sky on this? We do this in P.E., faster than a walk, but slower than a run? Ø We go to work, that’s our…..? We put juice in this to share?
Talking Time:
Talking Time: Questions: Firstly ask your child to look at the pictures and talk about them. What do they see? Can they describe the people? etc.
Ø What is everyone in the picture doing? SLEEPING Ø Which one do you think is most like you? Why? Ø Can you put names (for fun) on everyone in the pictures? Ø Who do you think will sleep for the shortest amount of time? Why? Ø Who do you think will sleep for the longest amount of time? Why? Ø Which age do we need the most sleep (young or old?)? Why? Ø Why do you think we need to sleep? Ø What would happen to your body/brain if you didn’t get enough sleep? Ø What do we do in our sleep? (dream) Ø Can you remember any good dream you had? What happened? Ø Challenge – Draw a picture of your dream, no matter how crazy it was!!!!!!!!!!

SESE Day 1: History idea – The life of my Grandparents (other family member) • Children could ask questions to find out about when their grandparents were born and what they were like growing
up. (another family member or friend could be chosen instead). • Find out how events in a child’s life (e.g. special occasions) are linked to his/her grandparents. • What was life like for children growing up in their grandparent’s time? • Discuss games they played, clothes they wore, who they played with and where, foods they ate. • Encourage the children to ask their own questions of their family member.
Science/Art idea – Make Cloud Dough
• Recipe 1 – Plain Flour and Oil (will be more like play dough) Choose a cup/mug - then add one cupful of the flour to a bowl, slowly add ½ a cupful of oil to it mixing slowly, you may not need to add in all the oil. • Recipe 2 – Cornflour and hair conditioner/baby lotion (will be a softer dough) Choose a cup/mug – then add one cupful of the cornflour to a bowl, slowly add ½ a cupful of hair conditioner or baby lotion. Mix it slowly. If it feels dry after use, you can add more conditioner to soften it. Tips: 1. Add a few drops of food colouring to your dough, make sure to mix it with a spoon first so as not to stain your fingers!!! 2. Store your cloud dough in an airtight bag or lunch box, make sure it’s sealed well and it will keep for a few weeks.
SESE Day 2:
Ø Read up on bees on the internet. Ø Read the facts below. Ø When you’re in your garden or on a walk, watch out for bees, count them and look for different ones.

Storytime
When Do Hippos Play?
by Daniel Errico
By the African river, know as the Nile
The sun fell away and it rested a while
The rhinos had braved all the smouldering heat
They lay down to sleep as they wiped off their feet
The elephants marched to their elephant beds
And gently they rested their elephant heads
The hippos went bathing in cool, shallow pools
Thinking the rhinos and elephants were fools
Slowly the hippos sank into the river
The water so cold that it gave them a shiver
(Hippos can't swim, like you might think
They also can't float, they could easily sink)
Underwater, they fell to the soft river bed
On darkish green plants with a smidgen of red
They strolled on the bottom, then bounced up for air
They did it for hours, without any care
The fish followed closely, and wove in an out
Under their belly, and up to their snout
Each of the hippos came up to the shore
To feed on the grass by the river once more
They dried off their bodies by shaking and stomping
And took bites of grass, chewing and chomping
With night fading fast, they were full from the feast
The sun returned back, rising up from the east
The hippos crept off to collapse for the day
While rhinos and elephants got up to play
Enjoying the warmth of the sun and its light
Never knowing the story of hippos at night
The End
Questions about the story:
Ø Name the animals you heard in the story? Ø Which animal is the main character of the story? Ø How would you describe a hippo to someone who had never seen one before? Ø When (time) does the story mostly take place? Ø Why do you think hippos like to keep busy at night-time? Ø Can you name any other animals who come out at night (are nocturnal)? Ø What do hippos eat? Ø Can hippos swim? Why do you think not? Ø How are hippos able to walk along the bottom of the water? Ø Would you like to be a hippo? Why/Why not? Ø Why do you think the hippos don’t do all this in day-time? Ø Why did the hippos think the elephants and rhinos were silly? Ø Where in the world do you think this story is set in? Ø Can you name any other animals from Africa? Ø Can you name the animal who is called the king? Why do you think lions are called kings? Ø What is a baby hippo called? ***Clue it’s the same name as a baby cow!***
Thanks to all my pupils for their hard work. I hope you are enjoying learning at home and remembering to try your best. Do what you can and always think of how hard you would work in the class for Miss Price and Lorraine.
Be kind to your family and enjoy this unusual but special time at home.
Parents/Guardians - any questions on the work or if you would like to share anything the children have been working on, please contact me by email – [email protected] .
Be safe,
Ms. Price
