Overview of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
It is an exciting time to be a part of the Dana-
Farber Cancer Institute community. Dana-
Farber scientists and researchers are expanding
their efforts in a variety of impactful areas,
including cancer immunology, genomics, and
chemical biology. Their teams are advancing
therapies that could break new ground in
cancer medicine and improve patient
outcomes. With Laurie H. Glimcher, MD, a
world-renowned immunologist, at the helm of
the organization, Dana-Farber is poised to
solve some of cancer’s most perplexing problems and reduce the burden of this disease on cancer patients
and their families.
DANA-FARBER CANCER INSTITUTE BACKGROUNDER | 2
Dana-Farber is renowned for its unique, equal commitment to leading-edge research and top-quality
patient care. This dual mission originated with founder Sidney Farber, MD, who pledged to bring his
research discoveries from the laboratory bench straight to his patients in the clinic, and to treat the whole
patient, not just their disease. Philanthropic funds that support basic science research play a major role in
Dana-Farber’s work. For example, a recent gift of $2.3M has established a research fund and fellowship in
cancer chemistry and biology aimed at fighting the most drug-resistant cancers.
As an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, the Institute also provides training for new generations of
physicians and scientists; designs programs that promote public health, particularly among high-risk and
underserved populations; and disseminates innovative
patient therapies and scientific discoveries to its target
community across the United States and throughout
the world.

Development Overview
The Development Office is 270 colleagues strong and has been led by Sue Paresky and her visionary
leadership since 1997. Dana-Farber’s Development team is passionate, driven, committed, and has the
respect and full partnership of its internationally renowned physicians and faculty. Together with trustees,
donors, and the community at large, they are leveraging their many talents to change the way cancer is
treated and prevented.
In a recent survey titled Philanthropy 400, which ranked the nation’s 400 largest charitable organizations,
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute ranked 2nd among all cancer-related organizations, 5th among all hospitals and
medical centers, and 6th in Massachusetts.
Dana-Farber concluded the largest capital campaign in its history in October 2010. Mission Possible: The
Dana-Farber Campaign to Conquer Cancer raised $1.18B, making Dana-Farber the first hospital in New
England to launch and complete a $1B capital campaign. The campaign met its $1B financial goal one year
early. The secret to this success is the mission-driven, results-oriented culture led by Sue Paresky and her
senior leadership team.

Barrett J. Rollins, MD, Ph.D.
Chief Scientific Officer
Linde Family Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School
Barrett J. Rollins, MD, Ph.D., is Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Dana-Farber Cancer
Institute and the Linde Family Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.
In his role as CSO, Dr. Rollins is charged with fostering collaboration among
investigators and helping them obtain the resources they need to keep Dana-
Farber at the forefront of cancer research.
DANA-FARBER CANCER INSTITUTE BACKGROUNDER | 6
Dr. Rollins’ research investigates the effects of inflammation on the development and progression of cancer.
His laboratory helped identify the molecular signals that direct the movement and activation of white blood
cells during inflammatory responses. His group discovered that some of these same signals stimulate cancer
growth, suggesting that they could be targets for novel cancer treatments. Most recently, his laboratory
described the first genetic abnormality in a rare childhood cancer called Langerhans cell histiocytosis, and
his group is using this discovery to develop new treatments for this disease.
A graduate of Amherst College, Dr. Rollins earned his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy at Case
Western Reserve University. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel
Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Rollins came to Dana-Farber in 1983 as a clinical fellow in medical oncology,
and was named Dana-Farber’s first CSO in 2004.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute History and Overview
In 1947, Sidney Farber, MD, founded the Children's Cancer Research Foundation, dedicated to providing
compassionate, state-of-the-art treatment to children with cancer while developing cancer preventatives,
treatments, and cures of the future.
The Foundation officially expanded its programs to include patients of all ages in 1969, and in 1974 became
known as the Sidney Farber Cancer Center in honor of its founder. The long-term support of the Charles A.
Dana Foundation was acknowledged by incorporating the Institute under its present name in 1983.
Today, the Institute employs over 4,500 people
supporting more than 450,000 patient visits a year, is
involved in some 900 clinical trials, and is
internationally renowned for its blending of research
and clinical excellence. The Institute's expertise in these
two aspects of the fight against cancer uniquely
positions it to develop and test the next generation of
cancer therapies in both the laboratory and the clinic.
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a principal teaching
affiliate of Harvard Medical School, a federally designated Center for AIDS Research, and a founding
member of the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, a federally designated comprehensive cancer center.

prevention, detection, and control throughout New
England, and maintains joint programs with other
Boston institutions affiliated with Harvard Medical
School and the Partners Health Care System, including
Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston Children's
Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Dana-Farber is supported by the National Cancer
Institute, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious
Diseases, and the generous support of numerous
foundations and individuals who contribute to the Institute's individual research and clinic programs or to
the Jimmy Fund, the principal charity of the Institute, named for one of its child patients.
Dana-Farber is New England's top-ranked cancer
hospital in the U.S. News & World Report 2016-17 Best

been ranked #1 or #2 for pediatric cancer care nine times
since 2008 by U.S. News & World Report. In an affirmation
of worldwide respect for the impact of Dana-Farber
research, 19 basic scientists and clinical investigators at the
Institute have been listed among "the world's most
influential scientific minds."
