SET Plans‘For Year 10 students’


SET PLAN

• The Senior Education and Training Plan (SET Plan) is a flexible and co-ordinated agreement between the school, students and parents.

• The SET Plan outlines a pathway through the senior years of schooling and is based on abilities, ambitions and interests of the student.

• The SET Plan is mandated by the Qld. Government.


SET PLAN• A SET Plan is being currently completed by the students in

Year 10 as part of the APPS program

• Students will need to review and refine their SET Plans in partnership with their parents in readiness for fruitful discussions at SET Plans interview.

• SET Plans interviews for Year 10 are being held on 15th & 16th August, this will be in conjunction with subject selections.

‘What is an ATAR?’


ATAR

• The ATAR has become the major entry requirement for University access for school students.

• Upon meeting the requirements for an ATAR students will be awarded a rank between 40 – 99.95 upon exit of Year 12.

• QTAC assigns the ATAR after receiving grades from QCAA and applies Inter-subject Scaling.

‘The minimum requirement to gain access to the ATAR pathway is C grade in Year 10 English’


ATAR Eligibility


How do I obtain the ATAR?

• ATAR is calculated from five (5) best General subjects

• Minimum requirements for ATAR is four (4) General subjects and one (1) applied or one (1) Certificate III courses.

• General subjects have more academic rigour than Applied and Certificate III course.

• ALL General subjects require students to sit an External Exam.

• To receive an ATAR, students must pass (‘C’ letter grade) English, Literature or Essential English.


Precluded Subjects and Subject Combinations?

• Only General English subjects (English or Literature) can be included OR Essential English

It is not possible to include both English & Essential English in the calculation of the ATAR

• Only General Mathematics subjects can be included OR Essential Mathematics

It is not possible to include both Mathematical Methods & Essential Mathematics in the calculation of the ATAR


What is Inter-subject scaling?

• Conducted by QTAC in order to assign the ATAR

Scaling is necessary so the students results in different subjects can be compared fairly

General v Applied v Vocational Education


What is a General Subject?

• A requirement of obtaining an ATAR

• 5 general or 4 general +1 applied or certificate

• Each general subject will have an external exam

• 1500 – 2500 word assignments

• Exams 2hrs and 1000 words

• Academic rigour

‘The minimum requirement to access general subjects is a C grade in Year 10 English’


What is an Applied Subject?

• Only one applied subject will contribute to ATAR

• There is no External Exam

• Assessment of 800- 1000 words

• Exams up to 90 mins.

• Less academic rigour than general subjects


What is Vocational Education?

• Nationally recognised qualifications students are assessed as either competent of not-competent

• Only one Certificate 3 or above will contribute to ATAR

• Delivered internally and externally through TAFE and other Registered Training Organisations (RTO).

• Funding available to complete.

• Can be gained through School Based Apprenticeship or Traineeship (SAT)

PATHWAY OPTIONS

• Multiple options available to students not wanting to achieve an ATAR

• Includes Certificate courses of study not provided here at The Gap SHS (TAFE, SVETE, and other training providers RTO).

• Distance Education

• School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SAT)


Certificate Courses

• Small scope provided internally.

• Brisbane Northwest Trade training & TAFE @ Schools are other major providers

• Need to be organised, motivated and independent student.

• Certificate 3 or above will contribute to ATAR as well as QCE points.

• Assessed as competent or not- competent


Certificate Courses

• A variety of course duration depending on the training organisation

• Typically a Certificate II course is 6 – 12 months

• Certificate III – up to 18 months

• Certificate IV & Diploma up to 2 years.


Brisbane Northwest Trade Training Centre

• Partner school, with priority access given to our students

• Local at Mitchelton SHS

• More focused to high school students

• Semester 1 & 2 intakes

• Scope is increasing and includes (automotive, health, electrotechnology, business, engineering in 2019)


School Based Apprenticeship & Traineeship

• School based apprenticeships and traineeships are advertised regularly

• Student applies and gain position with employer

• Head of Senior School can assist in putting the agreement together through a preferred training organisation.

• Student will gain a Certificate 3 qualification and also be paid for their work (minimum 7 hours a week) and typically last for 12 months


Government Funding

• Based on the Priority Skills List

• Government will provide funding (partial or full) for students to complete Certificate Courses (primarily Cert 2) whilst at school. This is called VETIS.

• Funding also available to employer for providing training to a School-based apprentice or trainee (SAT).

• Cannot access VETIS funding for two courses.

• If more than one certificate course is desired ‘fee for service’ will be need to be paid.


Distance Education


Distance Education

• Available to students to access a greater scope of subjects unable to be offered here

• Includes General, Applied and Vocational Education

• Providers are Brisbane School of Distance Education & Cairns School of Distance Education

• Students are required to be independent learners, scheduling of timetable and assessment is conducted by the provider, and may clash with school program here.

• Application through Senior School Head of Department


Selecting Subjects


SUBJECT SELECTIONS

• In Year 9 students will enter selections in online portal during Week 4

• Year 10 students will enter selections as part of SET Plan/ Subject Selection interview (August 15th & 16th 2019)

• Senior Course Guide contains all information regarding offerings in the Senior School (Year 10 -12)

SUBJECT CHANGES

• With current information available subject changes will be highly problematic in Year 11 & 12.

• At this point in time our current stance is that students in Year 11 will have their final opportunity to change subjects at the end of Term 3.

• Alignment with all syllabuses delivered in our scope.

• The reason is the manner in which syllabuses are delivered and credits towards QCE are assigned.

• There will be some exceptions that will be handled on a case by case basis.

• Students in Year 10 will have more flexibility to move subjects at the beginning of the semester.

• Contains all relevant information pertaining to course offerings, course readiness and prerequisites as well as sample course programs.

• Students in Year 9 and 10 need to be familiar with this guide and course requirements.

• There is no specific Year 10 course guide.


COURSE SELECTION GUIDELINES for students moving into Year 10

• English, Mathematics & Applied Positive Psychology are compulsory

• Four (4) Elective subjects will be studied.

• Course readiness is highly recommended.

• More operational information to be forwarded.


COURSE SELECTION GUIDELINES for students moving into Year 11

• An English course and a Mathematics course are compulsory

• Applied Positive Psychology will also be studied (no selection required).

• Six (6) subjects will be studied, plus APP

• Course prerequisites will be applied.

• Selections to be finalised at SET Plan/ Subject Selection interview (15th & 16th August)
