IN MEMORIUM

2014 was another big year for us and will go down as a year of transition. The Rochester City Council got us off to a great start on March 17, 2014 to fund the additional $2.3M for the Senior Center addition to the Recreation Center renovation. Throughout the year your representatives met with the design team and city planners from Park and Rec to flesh out the new center. Sometime in 2016 we hope to be enjoying our new space, complete with a warm water pool, a healthy living center, space and amenities designed with seniors in mind, and so much more. Many thanks go to the members of the Senior Center Steering Committee who have worked these past two years with the architects and design firm that brought forth the plans for this project. We are now moving into the capital campaign phase of the project with the Excelsior Bay Group, an outside consultant, to identify opportunities at the new center for individuals as well as organizations to donate to the project. We need to raise over $2 million to make this a hospitable and exciting venture. Early interviews confirm that each of us will need to contribute as our center competes with at least nine other capital campaigns in the community. I can tell you that we are also pursuing a vendor to run our new café, and that it will be part of our destination. As the year came to a close we also ended our fund-raising with Flamingo Bingo. The partnership with the Elks Lodge and renovation of their banquet hall space just did not work out. Our longtime board member and manager of bingo, Deb Nusbaum brought vigor and resource to this activity for more than five years. Her contribution to the endeavor allowed your Senior Center and its Foundation to enjoy over $100,000 per year in gambling revenue. This was the largest bingo operation in the state but took a tremendous amount of human effort to sustain an activity that no longer garnered great appeal or community support. My three years as president of the Senior Center also ended in January with a smooth transition to Bruce Swanson. Unfortunately, Bruce’s life ended abruptly on February 25, 2015 having spent part of that afternoon at the Senior Center helping to plan your future.

FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

Bruce Lane Swanson, age 71, died unexpectedly on February 25th, 2015 at his home in Rochester. A highly respected CPA, Bruce volunteered his time and skills to many local non-profit organizations, including the Rochester Senior Center, where he served on the board since 2011, serving as treasurer, and as a member of both the Finance and Nominating committees. He was recently elected board president for 2015.

Outside of work, Bruce was an avid sportsman who enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, hiking, and camping.

We thank Bruce for his years of service to the Senior Center. He will be missed.
