Linwood Senior Center“Many of us have excuses to last a lifetime. The sooner we let go of them and get on with

living, the better off we are.” ~Tim Hansel“I was looking for something to do this summer and a walk to Oregon seemed like the best thing.” (She started the walk in Independence, MO, and walked the Oregon Trail through to

Portland) ~Grandma Gatewood Dear Friends, I want to ask you a question. Who inspires you? I have several people that inspire me. Some of you know I worked for a first round draft pick for the New England Pats in the later 80’s. Ron Burton was his name, and he ran an Althletic Training Village for Young Women (& Men) athletes. When I was there my cousin, introduced me to Tim Hansel, a great writer of inspirational books. Tim worked hard to recover from an injury that the Dr’s said he may not ever walk again. “Holy Sweat” is a great read for you if you are recovering from an injury. Also, my new “hero” is Grandma Gatewood, she walked the Applachian Trail, 2,190 + miles, when she was 65 years old, with a raincoat, blanket, some food and her Ked tennis shoes. *And she did this 3 times! We are discussing her in this month’s bookclub! My other hero is our own “Starla Criser” who just finished another book titled “Life’s Twists & Turns”, in the book, one of my favorite stories is “A Quilt from the Heart.” It is about memory, grief, and new beginnings. Here is what I know, YOU can have some “new beginings” too! You just have to look around, and challenge yourself! This month, brings some fun options, from our Ice Cream Social to our Encouragement Talk, checkout what we have to do! Don’t quit! ~Cherise & Company

As you may recall, we had a Final Friday presentation at Downtown Center a few years ago about this unique couple. The Martins travelled the world photographing numerous animals and tribal people in the early 20th Century. Their filming allowed explorers, naturalist and audiences around the world some unique vision and inspired many people to pursue dreams in the natural world. Our hope is to get a little ‘wilder’ as we then head on to the Safari Zoological Park in Caney, KS which will afford us to get an up-close look at some exotic animals. Plan on having a ‘wild’ time! Cost is $95 for members and $105 for non-members. All food/snacks included in price. Date is scheduled for October 10, 2019. Payment due by September 6, 2019. *No refunds, unless someone is found to take your place.

Hello Everyone…Happy August!!! For this month since we are taking a break from parties and fellowship events, I would like to take a look back at our Random Acts of Kindness calendar; which encourages us to focus on “Responsibility” for August. Responsibility means being accountable to ourselves as well as others. Also, having the opportunity or ability to act independently and make decisions. I would like to share a cute tongue twister story titled “Who’s Job is it?” There were four people their names were EVERYBODY, SOMEBODY, NOBODY and ANYBODY. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. When Nobody did it, Somebody got mad because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have in the first place. The moral of this tongue twister story is that when you find yourself saying…”Somebody should do this or Somebody need to do that”… Remember: YOU are Somebody! Isn’t that what you’ve always wanted to be? When we are responsible to ourselves and others, we are showing kindness. Sources: (www.randomactsofkindness.org) Hopefully, I left you with something to think about for the month…as always, Be Encouraged!!! Carnesha Tucker, Center Director

Orchard Park Senior CenterGreetings Everyone!! The heat is on! Summer is here, and I would like to share some tips to keep you safe during the heat. We all know that hot weather can be dangerous. This is especially true for older adults. Every summer, nearly 200 Americans die of health problems caused by high heat and humidity. Most of these individuals happen to be age 50 or older. Hot weather is more likely to cause health problems for older adults for a variety of reasons. These reasons include aging-related physical changes in the body, chronic health conditions, and side effects of taking some medications. When the temperature climbs above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, older adults need to be proactive and take precautions. When the outside temperature is above 90 degrees, older people should keep the following tips in mind:• Stay Out of the Sun if possible. Go outside early in the morning, or when the sun starts to set. Adjusting when you go outside could mean a difference of several degrees.• Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of cool water, clear juices, and other liquids that don’t contain alcohol or caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate you.• Dress Appropriately. Whenever you can, try wearing loose, light-colored clothes (dark colored clothes absorb heat). Top it off with a lightweight, broad-brimmed hat and you are ready to go. These simple changes will help you stay cool and avoid sunburn.• Air Conditioning is your friend. Spend as much time as possible in air conditioned spaces. If you don’t have an air conditioner, go somewhere that does. Read a book at the library, walk around in indoor malls, watch a movie at the theater, or meet your friends at the senior center.

Orchard Park Senior CenterDirector’s Notes (Continued)

• Use broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher• Take tepid (not too cold or too hot) showers, baths, or sponge baths when you’re feeling warm. Don’t have the time? Then wet washcloths or towels with cool water and put them on your wrists, ankles, armpits and neck.

It’s also important to recognize when hot weather is making you sick, and when to get help. Here is a list of health problems caused by too much heat:• Dehydration- A loss of water in your body. It can be serious if not treated. Warning signs: Weakness, headache, muscle cramps, dizziness, confusion, and passing out. What to do? Call your healthcare provider or 911. Meanwhile, drink plenty of water and, if possible, sports drinks such as Gatorade, which contain important salts called electrolytes. Among other things, electrolytes play a key role in regulating your heartbeat. Your body loses electrolytes when you are dehydrated.

• Heat Stroke- A very dangerous rise in your body temperature. It can be deadly. Warning signs: A body temperature of 103 degrees Fahrenheit or higher; red, hot, and dry skin; a fast pulse; headache; dizziness; nausea or vomiting; confusion; and passing out. What to do? Call 911 immediately. Move to a cool, shady place and take off or loosen heavy clothing. If possible, wet yourself with cool water, or put cloths soaked with cool water on your wrists, ankles, armpits, and neck to lower your temperature. Try to see if you can safely swallow water or sports drinks. (If you are taking care of someone else who has heat stroke, only give them water or drinks if they are awake and can swallow).

• Heat exhaustion – A serious health problem caused by too much heat and dehydration. If not treated, it may lead to heat stroke. Warning signs: Heavy sweating or no sweating, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, paleness, cold or clammy skin, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, fast and weak pulse, fainting. What to do? Without delay, move to a cool, shady place,

and drink plenty of cool fluids. Call 911 right away if you have high blood pressure or heart problems, or if you don’t feel betterquickly after moving to the shade and drinking liquids.

• Heat Syncope – Fainting caused by high temperatures. Warning signs: Dizziness or fainting. What to do? Lie down and put your feet up, and drink plenty of water and other cool fluids.
