UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND AT R.R.H.S.

Last Thursday several members of our Equity Group had the extreme honour of meeting José Ramos-Horta from Timor-Leste at Southern Cross University. Mr Ramos-Horta is a Nobel Peace Prize winner and human rights activist who received an Honorary Doctorate on the day. This visit was one of only two events Mr Ramos-Horta at-tended whilst in Australia, therefore it was a privilege for our students to meet such a global eminent. José Ramos-Horta had an excellent sense of humour and spoke elo-quently about the strength of Australia and its cultural sta-bility. He also noted that he was barracking for us in the World Cup soccer! This opportunity came about through Janelle Saffin’s admiration of the recent Human Rights Forum organised by the Equity Group, and the ongoing passion of our students in the area of social justice.

Future Farmers’ Safety Day

Year 9 students attended a farmers’ safety day at Casino where they

participated in various activities on chemical safety, motorbike safety,

electrical and hearing protection and mental health. They also learnt

the basics of farming and how to be safe with all types of

machinery on the farm.

From the Principal Lismore Sister City Exchange Three students from Richmond River High will travel to Japan in the September holidays to stay with Japanese families and attend school in Japan. Japanese students will be attending school on Thursday 22

nd

July and Wednesday 4th August whilst

staying with their Australian host families. We hope that all our students will help to make these students feel special and very welcome at our school and we also hope that an increasing number of students take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Lismore City Council with our Sister City in Japan. We will be commencing the teaching of Japanese in 2011 as part of our LOTE program and students will be given a taste of both French and Japanese from the beginning of next year. Thanks to Mr Maxted who has been involved in extra study this year in preparation for beginning Japanese teaching next year.

Closed to out of zone enrolments for Year 7, 2011 Unfortunately we have had to set a ceiling for enrolments over the next few years to ensure that we can accommodate all our students successfully in our school. This is a great sadness for us as we know there are many talented, creative and successful students who wish to attend Richmond River High and we would love to have them. We have at present rejected all out of zone enrolments for Year 7 in 2011 except those who have a sibling attending the school. If you believe that you have additional information to present in favour of your application to Richmond River or you believe we have not clearly understood your application you may wish to address these concerns to the Principal of Richmond River High School and all additional information will be assessed by a panel. Please be aware that panel decisions can only be based on the clearly identified criteria outlined in our enrolment policy and the Out of Zone enrolment policy for the DET.

Formal Assembly Thank you to all parents who attended the awards ceremony for their children or to watch their students perform in the musical items today. The formal assembly also provided a fantastic opportunity for Mr Ryan to say farewell to the students of Richmond River and for the SRC to recognise Mr Ryan’s achievements over his nine year stay at RRHS. Thank you to our Mayor Jenny Dowell for her keynote address

and her ongoing support of public education. I am so proud of all the award winners and the students who have improved their performance or maintained their high level of student achievement.

Lantern Parade Thank you to all students who participated in the Lantern Parade last Saturday night. We had a very large group of dancers, lantern carriers and merry makers take part in this wonderful community event. Thank you to all our students for their vitality and sense of fun and enthusiasm at being involved.

KIC Dinner The KIC dinner was a huge success, not only for the awards presented to Richmond River High School students but because of the atmosphere on the night and the support from the audience for all Richmond River High School nominees. I felt so proud to be part of a community group that was so warm, supportive and keen to celebrate the achievements of others. Connor Anderson, won an award for his work with Lismore City Council in developing the Nimbin Skate Park. Kellie Mitchell won the section – Against all Odds. Kellie was awarded this for her resilience and never give up attitude. Twoey Jones was awarded a $3,000 scholarship from Success Martial Arts, Daniel Bow a 3 months membership to Success Martial Arts and Aidan Zeladonni a 3 Months Membership to Success Martial Arts. Alicia Harper, one of our ex-students won the ‘Against all Odds’ in the senior section. A journalist from Prime TV rang the school to congratulate the students on their attitude and behaviour and an ABC journalist spoke to me about the special atmosphere that surrounds RRHS. We have excellent students and teachers at our school and the KIC award night is a fabulous way to continue to highlight what is so good about our students and that our future is in safe hands. Thank you for the support from all families for our school and for your wonderful children. Congratulations to all nominees. SRC Casual Day We held a Casual Day yesterday to raise money for one of our families who lost everything in a house fire last week. The students raised $645 towards the Devine family replacing some of their items. Thank you to all students for participating and supporting a local family in need. Mrs D Williamson Acting Principal

From the Deputy Principal NAIDOC Week Activities NAIDOC Week falls during the school holidays and Lismore, as we have previously published, has some exciting events planned. There are free buses organised from Casino, Kyogle and Nimbin for activities organised in Lismore next week – see the local paper for bus times. Richmond River High School student art work completed in Art classes will be on display at venues around Lismore. Events for NAIDOC week that are happening at Richmond River HS include an Art Competition coordinated by Ms Bouveret and the CAPA Department and a performance by the BAMA – BALAS on Wednesday 28 July (cost $4 payable to the front office). Bringing Equipment for School Many students are arriving to school with little or no equipment. It is a requirement of all students to bring the necessary books and writing equipment for every timetabled lesson for the day – one book for all classes is not acceptable. Could parents please check what books/pens etc. students are bringing to school and use some time during the holidays to make sure they do have the right equipment. Congratulations Special congratulations to the many students who continually do the right thing each and every day. This is acknowledging the students who wear correct uniform, attend all classes, hand their work in on time and follow our PBL expectations of respectful, responsible, honest and safe at all times. At times you probably don’t think we notice you doing the right thing but I wish to assure you and your parents we do – and we appreciate it. Well done. Mrs G Masters Acting Deputy Principal

Congratulations to Fiona Rourke of Year 11 who has been accepted into the Honeywell Engineering Summer

School to be conducted at the University of New South Wales,

Sydney during December.

YEAR 7 PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS Thursday 22/7/10

Dear Parents/Carers You are warmly invited to attend Parent/Teacher interviews on Thursday July 22, from 3.45pm until 6.15pm in the Multi Purpose Unit (MPU). This afternoon is of vital importance to all Parents/Carers of Year 7 students as we aim to support your student in achieving improved learning outcomes and results in their studies. During the interviews you will also have the opportunity to inform the teachers about matters at home that may affect your student’s progress. Please bring your son/daughter with you along with a copy of their half yearly reports and invitation. We also ask that you write in the spaces next to the subjects, the names of the teachers with whom you seek an interview. In the right hand column you can list any concerns that you wish to discuss, or record ideas raised during the interviews that will help you to support your student at home. Mr Hensley, the Year 7 Deputy Principal, and Mrs Williamson, the Acting Principal, will be available to provide you with addi-tional information and to guide you in the right direction for inter-views which should be restricted to between 5 and 10 minutes. Should you require additional interview time we are happy to organise this through the front office at a future convenient time.

P & C Donations The PDHPE Department would like to thank the P & C for their dona-tion which helped purchase sporting and gymnastics equipment for the school. Items purchased were 3 Old Town Rockport canoes, team singlets, a floor tumbling strip and a gymnastics landing mat.
